making this morning. thank you for joining us. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we'll get to all of that in just a moment. first you have to know what to wear when you leave your house. >> a nice cool start to the morning with mostly clear skies. we'll start to see the fog returning to the coast as we go through later this morning but visibility is all clear as you head through san rafael and heading to san francisco looking good there. as we get a look at our high temperatures today it will be really nice. temperatures on par with where we should be for this time in july in oakland. 74 degrees. san jose up to 81 degrees. we'll talk about this and what's ahead as those temperatures ramp up for the weekend in a few minutes. mike starts us out with the san ma mateo bridge. i've been watching this camera intently. we've had a cal trans crew. you see it there and then a disabled box truck there and flares and cleared. the flares burnt out so a lot of change in the last ten.

as we look at the map not a lot of slowing or explanation on the chp report so i continue to scan to see what else is going on there with but so far just prepare for that distraction. the rest of the bay does move well. travel times over to the bay bridge just under 15 minutes from highway 4. back to you. thank you, mike. 5:01 now. to breaking news this morning out of the east bay. massesi massive flames. >> the fire explodes. a closer look at what's left behind. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is there with what happened. pete, we should say people are safe, right? are. >> reporter: good morning to u you, kris and sam. yes, no injuries to report following this early morning fire. the fire trucks are no longer here on the scene. the scene is for the most part cleared. that wasn't the case just hours ago.

>> everybody out! >> reporter: you can see and hear firefighters directing residents to evacuate from the six-unit apartment complex on the 1900 block of ygnacio valley road. this call came in and you can see the heavy fire coming out in that video as those flames are going during that fire. crews were able to knock out the fire fairly quickly. as i mentioned at the top of the report there were no injuries, no rescues and no one was inside of the building when crews did a check of those units. now when we did get on the scene i spoke with red cross and they said there were two families and they were able to get them motel accommodations. this fire is still under investigation. we'll continue to monitor the scene. we'll have another live update for you in the next hour. we're live in walnut creek. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, pete. not too far away from where

pete's reporting right now over in pleasant hill, more breaking news this morning. this that you're looking at now, that fire is at the black angus steak house about 2:30 this morning. fire crews put out flames at that restaurant right on main street. firefighters tell us the fire started in an electrical panel in the restaurant. they say the fire was mostly contained in the wall so the crew had to punch a hole and pull out damaged wood to extinguish it. meantime, keeping track of breaking developments happening in yosemite. this is new video of the fire within the last three and a half hours. it is the massive fire that continues to burn along highway 141. that major artery into yosemite national park which is still open. it is only 5% contained. >> reporter: along highway 140 in mayor poe is a overnight. the aerial attack was almost nonstop all day long. this could go anywhere it wants fueled by tall, dry grass and intense summer heat. debbie phillips is an evacuee. >> i'm pray iing my house is ok. >> reporter: and she's watching her home in kathy's valley. >> the landlord stayed to fight the fire. i have my clothes and pictures of my grandchildren. that's what was important. >> reporter: the fire started sunday and raced running along highway 49, now both sides of 140. hundreds of structures threatened. eight destroyed. carpets of tall, gri grass from winter rains delivering the flames to trees weakened or killed by previous years of drought and surrounding the town

away from the popular mountain winery. no structures were burned. a developing story on the peninsula this morning. we continue to push for answers into what led to a shooting in san mateo that happened around 7:30 last night on south delaware street not far from an elementary school. police say the suspect took off in a getaway car. the man shot is expected to be okay. san mateo police investigated late into the night and they say they think the suspect knew the victim rescue crews are set to continue their search for a missing boater on tomales bay. marin fire tells us the plan is to start aerial, ground, and water searches at 6:00 this morning. officials tell us boats with sonar will stay out until 2:00 in the morning looking. people in the community tell us the missing man is 70-year-old tod friend had who owns the oyster company. fire officials say the weather is slowing them down. >> we have about 30-mile-an-hour sustained wind that does create

difficulty to see. it does get difficulty to see. >> officials say friend was not wearing a life jacket at the time when he was on the water. others tell us he worked on the water daily and knew the bay well. 20 years later and a missing person's case is now solved this morning. this man, 37-year-old richard, disappeared in august of 1998. police say dna testing reveals skeletal remains are his. results are now just being released. the police chief told us what he thinks might have happened. >> he was at home and decided he needed to go for a walk and left his home, which is actually within a mile of where he was found. the autopsy did not reveal any signs of foul play.

>> they hope this discovery can bring closure to his family. a small dog snatched from a san francisco home by a coyote this week. "the chronicle" reports it happened sunday morning it in the balboa terrace part of the city. the couple had just returned when a coyote jumped out and grabbed their 13-year-old dog bella. her body was then found nearby. "the krchronicle" reporting several coyote attacks on pets around that part of san francisco over the last two years. they include the maulings of three small dogs and cats. be careful. keep your doors closed. animal control is doing daily patrols and coyotes are most active. the bay area may be getting its first major new reservoir in nearly 20 years. the mercury news reports the water district wants to buy 12,000 acres of el torro ranch

east of gilroy. the reservoir would go if in. the $800 million project would meet water needs for about hundreds of thousands of people. it would tear down an existing dam and build a new one that could be up to 300 feet tall. the paper says the last major reservoir construction was in contra costa county in 1998. it is 5:09 right now on this wednesday morning. let's take a look at the day planner for san francisco. now that the fog is back we will get some clouds throughout the morning and also some drizzle with our temperatures in the upper 50s and then reaching into the mid-60s today and it will be a very nice day to take in the sunshine and head out to some of the hiking trails or enjoy time at the park. our temperature trend goes from the mid-50s during the morning into the mid-80s. wide range in temperatures and it does quickly warm up today. and we'll talk about what's ahead with our temperature trend for today in evergreen.

wall street could be down by goldman sachs and netflix helping power the nasdaq to an eighth straight day of gains, its longest winning streak since 2015 and later on today we're going to get data on housing, earnings for morgan stanley. a recap for you the dow falling 54 points. this morning the nasdaq gaining 29 points to end it yesterday. 6344. so we're kicking off. also this morning a major media merger might be in the works. reports say the discovery communications is in talk with scripps network interactive. terms are unclear at this time but the companies have a combined value of roughly $23 billion. discovery being the owner of the discovery channel, tlc, and own network. scripps is the parent of the food network and hgtv. your new samsung phone might finally get its voice. samsung lost the galaxy s8

it does feel cooler. so especially in the north bay you need a jacket as our temperatures have been starting out in the lower 50s there, upper 50s for san jose right now as you head out the door and our high temperatures this afternoon will feel very nice and this is right where we should be this time of year seeing those high temperatures reaching low 80s in san jose with some upper 80s in spots like gilroy and then let's head to the east bay where we will be reaching into the low 90s in antioch and some upper 80s for walnut creek, in hayward and oakland, the peninsula in the low 60s and half moon bay, low 80s for palo alto and 74 degrees for san mateo. the embarcadero up to 65 degrees, very nice with some clearing and a lot of sunshine. napa reaching 81 degrees. if you're making it a beach day and maybe planning to head to santa cruz for the day, it will be cool as you head over the summit. temperatures starting out in the mid-60s and then in the upper 60s later today and then you'll

be peeling off those long sleeves. now the seven-day forecast is coming up bottom of the screen as we take a long look outside at the sierra, lucky you if you have plans to go there. the upper mountains still has snow. at squaw valley temperature will be in the upper 70s for the next few days and a quick update about hurricane fernanda a category 1. still holding on to its hurricane status but be weakening and good news. it looks like it will be heading north of hawaii so it may miss the islands there. in san francisco we're going to keep those temperature in the 60s over the next several days, upper 80s inland and then mid-90s in time for the weekend. and, mike, there's a delay on the rails? >> we have this just in from ace. they say a train coming out of the altamont pass is delayed. train up in one, up to 15 minutes right now. they're waiting for another train to pull over. trains can't pass each other on the same track so that is the delay. we're waiting for an update. no delay for rails getting

chronicle." prosecutors aren't saying why charges aren't going to be filed. the father was preparing a bottle for the baby nearby. a muni operator later spotted that woman and the baby on a bus and reported it. prosecutors say the father will also not face any charges. developing now we're waiting for official word that a 10-year-old florida boy died from an opioid overdose. he would be among the youngest to die in an epidemic that has swept this country. investigators are trying to figure out if the boy ingested that fentanyl. they believe he came into contact with the drug unintentionally at a camp pool. authorities are warning families even a tiny amount of an opioid can kill. >> the most dangerous opioid we're finding out there, the amount the same size as a grain of rice could be potentially deadly. >> the "today" show looked into the numbers overnight. in 2015, 51 people died of opioid overdose.

look a little crowded as folks get their work day started off. this is a live picture from fremont, we are happy you're starting your day with us. good morning. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon today. we want to check this with kari hall because the forecast is much cooler this morning. actually had to close the win w window. >> it feels really nice out there and at least we don't have the air conditioner up today and we have the natural air conditioning again in san francisco with the low clouds and fog. we hold steady here in the mid to upper 60s but there will be changes for the inland valleys. upper 80s for some of the warmest spots and then for the weekend we'll be in the mid-90s and that looks to continue for next week. now i'm about to head back to my desk and prepare the forecast for some weekend events going on and that's coming up in about seven minutes. but mike has a report of something that may be a distraction in san jose. >> kari, i cranked up the grain on our camera because it's dark.

oh, my gosh, just messed up. just past 280 had a plume of smoke showing up. also some restaurants in the area that might be the result of that. i apologize the lighting is changing so quickly. our camera here pointed over towards 280 and that's where southbound 280 at mclaughlin is where we have a little slowing, the possibility of slowing because of smoke on the shoulder. we're checking on what's going on over there and hope to have more information. the rest of the bay looks real good right now. no major slowing as far as the roadways go. the bay brimming toll plaza, meet lights were just turned on. back to you. thank you, mike. another construction accident at facebook's new campus in menlo park. >> this time the worker involved fell 15 feet. "today in the bay's" bob redell is digging into how this

happened. bob, good morning, and what did you find out? >> reporter: good morning to you, sam and kris. the most recent construction accident at the facebook campus involves a 77-year-old worker. now as you see in the photos released by the menlo park fire district he was work iing on th fourth floor, the roof of facebook building 21 when according to firefighters a piece of steel or decking came dislodged. that worker lost his footing and fell 10 to 15 feet. fortunately he was wearing safety rigging which prevent ed him from hitting the floor below but was still hurt and had to be taken to the hospital. the fire department tells us this worker's is menlo quint. he lives nearby in the belle haven neighborhood of menlo park. in late april of this year two other workers fell from facebook building 21, the construction site. in that accident they were harnessed to a beam that was about 40 feet up in the air.

it failed and fell about 20 feet, again, while both workers were injured their safety equipment stopped them from actually hitting the ground. reporting live here in menlo park, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> critical error following regulations. thank you very much, bob. our coverage continues online. bob redell will push for answers this morning as to how this happened and will tweet it out, post it on facebook as well. twitter handle is bob @nbc. more fires to tell you about. this time in antioch. firefighters say a string of small brushfires popped up just minutes apart from each other. they think that it was more than just coincidental. we have confirmed all of those fires were deliberately set. the first fire was reported at 8:50 at the contra costa fair ground and then the others at a one-mile radius. you see them on your screen. firefighters tell us there's no mistaking an arsonist is behind

the fires. >> we've eliminated all natural causes. it's considered arson at this point. we're actively searching for anyone involved with our arson investigator and antioch pd. >> in the event you believe you might have seen something suspicious, please call antioch police. police in san francisco are look iing for a group of young people who violently robbed a muni bus rider. it happened monday night around 7:00 in the evening. the bus was near market and mcallister street in san francisco near city hall. police say the man got into an altercation with a group of ten or so teenagers and when he got off the bus they then jumped him and took his phone. overnight we did research and found muni crime is actually trending downward. official numbers from the city showed overall decline in the crime rate over the past few years. we have some new details this morning also in san francisco. a controversial bicycle chop shop bill in san francisco going back to the drawing board. the pro- proposed measure, some

groups said it targets the homeless population and it's not going to cut down on theft. the supervisor plans to rewrite the measure. and b.a.r.t. right now will begin testing new train cars on main tracks this week. the agency posting that news on facebook tuesday. b.a.r.t. is replacing cars in a $2.6 billion effort to make service more reliable. b.a.r.t. officials says this is the start of the final phase of testing. it is 5:35. new this morning a popular school bus route is being chopped. the east bay times reports officials voted to terminate the el toyofal bus route. the company says the route isn't safe although it hasn't reported any serious accident in more than two decades. dozens of students will have to find another way to get to school. good luck, parents. the idea of free tuition is

attracting more students to city college of san francisco according to "the essex examiner." enrollment is up 17% compared to last year. enrollment in credit courses city officials are funding for san francisco residents have grown more than 25%. a live look from our nation's capital as republicans in congress are scrambling to figure out what is next for a new health care plan. first their replacement dies in the senate. now plans to repeal it cleanly is also in trouble, probably dead on arrival. president trump says congress should now let obamacare fail. chris pollone is live with what's next. he's floated that idea, chris, and today the president will sit down with senate leaders. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, sam. if obamacare does collapse that could leave 12 million americans in some sort of health care limbo. that's why we're seeing some governors from states cross the

country today and members of congress saying they want to see a real effort by members of copping to work together, both parties, to try to fix this. with senate republicans unable to agree on a plan, president donald trump has another idea. >> let obamacare fail. it will be a lot easier. and i think probably in that position we'll just let obamacare fail. >> reporter: a disconcerting eye for the 12 million americans who buy their health insurance on those individual markets. experts say if the administration cuts off obamacare subsidies it would drive up prices and cause the exchanges to collapse. >> you can't force insurers to be more generous. you have to give them money and more customers. that's exactly what the affordable care act does. >> reporter: now ratcheting up the pressure demanding lawmakers launch a bipartisan effort to drive down costs and stabilize the market.

putin is sick. all g20 leaders and spouses were invited by the chancellor of germany. and we knew about this. widening up the shot. it sound like a brush fire or roadside fire off 280. you see the smoke start iing to clear up a little bit. meanwhile we do expect this to build right at 680. that's not unusual for the south bay. the fire is off the freeway but may be a distraction and a little slowing typical of your morning commute. as we zoom out the map, the rest of the bay moves very well. showing a little bit of slowing there heading to the bay bridge toll plaza. an easy drive. metering lights are on. it's all green on the approach. that's good until you get there at the toll plaza.

>> it's all good. >> one of the nice things kari does for us other than help us get dressed for the day is plan our weekend. >> and it's wednesday so you may be already looking ahead. the weather is going to be beautiful today but we it's going to be heat iing up this weekend. here is a look at saturday's forecast. it stays cool along the coast. clouds and fog. the bay will be at 82 degrees and 94 degrees for the inland valleys. and for sunday more of the same with some cool temperature by the bay and the coast. you may be heading to redwood city. that will be going on from noon to 8:00 p.m. and temperatures will be perfect. a lot of sunshine. so make sure you bring a hat or something to give you some shade. and then on sunday it's a busy weekend in san francisco. we have the marathon going on. starts out at 5:30 in the morning.

we'll talk about that coming up. mike, kari, thank you very much. 5:44. tomorrow is an important day legally for o.j. simpson. it is his parole hearing and the backlash is already growing over his possible release from prison. to date simpson served nine years behind bars for robbing two different sports memorabilia dealers in las vegas. now more than 100,000 people have signed a petition to keep simpson in prison. had his lawyer says simpson wasn't sentenced for robbery but rather the deaths of his ex-wife nicole brown simpson and ron gold mman. >> no matter what you think about his circumstance in 1995 it is clear that if you are a fair-minded american you know the utter abomination of the sentence that he received and the fact he has been in jail for nine years is not because of the crime in las vegas but it is a consequence of what happened in

los angeles. >> of course what was dubbed the trial of the century simpson was acquitted in the double murder case in 1995. stay with us as we track tomorrow's parole hearing. our own cheryl hurd will be reporting from las vegas. a continuing coverage now, the family of an australian woman shot and killed by minneapolis police demanding answers. it's a story that's been slowly unfolding all week and we're now starting to learn about what led up to all of this. justine damond called 911 to report an assault. now a county attorney says she approached the patrol car when it arrived. state investigators told our minnesota affiliate the police officer in the passenger seat fired through the driver's side window killing damond after hearing a loud sound near the car. >> most times you can even at least imagine what the police department might say to excuse it. here i can't even imagine what

new this this morning a man accused of kidnapping a woman stealing three cars and hitting 14 other cars is in the hospital after crashing. a 39-year-old man wept on a reckless driving spree during rush hour yesterday. chp officers say he stole his father's car that crashed on highway 99. he then stole a caltrans truck. it landed in a ditch. but as one of the victims of the crash explains that still wasn't the of it. >> the really crazy part was when a bystander had stopped to ask if he was okay, when the guy asked if he was okay he said, yeah. he with went to check on other people. when the guy got out of the ditch and jumped into had his car and stole his car with his mother in it. he started yelling, hey, my mom is in that car.

>> investigators the man kept driving, though that mother was in there. the woman inside the car he stole was able to get out before he crashed again. by the end 14 cars were hit. the driver was airlifted to the hospital in serious condition. no one else, though, was seriously hurt. >> no conscience there. 5:56. it has been nearly four years since three teenagers were killed in a series of shootings in oakland and this morning police are reminding the community they still need help catching the killers. 13-year-old lee weathersbee iii was gunned down in 2013. this happened on 104th avenue and international boulevard and then three weeks later just about a mile away from that scene his 19-year-old brother and his brother's best friend were also shot to death. police are offering a $30,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest hoping someone in the area may have seen the people involved in the shooting. there is a warning from the

fbi about something that might be in your home that your child might use. the fbi says parents need to be aware of privacy risks from the internet connected to toys. so-called smart toys contain sensors, microphones, cameras, data, even gps or speech recognition. the advisory says some toys can be collecting conversations and potentially sharing that information like a child's name, school, and activities. the fbi says parents should be looking at toy company user agreement disclosure agreements and prich si practices before they sign them. a virus warning for the east bay. the mosquito abatement project says a dead bird did test positive for west nile virus. it is the first case of the virus in the county this year. that bird was found in oakland and the test results just came back this week. health officials are increasing surveillance and also carefully monitoring any other cases. all new this morning more proof that sleep is essential to brain health.
