a live look outside and the temperatures now at 60 degrees. we're heading up to 8 degrees this afternoon and here are the temperature trends as we start out with nice cool weather. heats up fairly quickly as we go through the day, and we'll talk about what's ahead as we go into the next several days. some hotter weather for the weekend. that's in about seven minutes. mike now has a closure in the east bay. in fact, we're watching a couple things. one of them over here slowing out of the altamont pass. an earlier crash. that's not the closure. 580 is open but two big rigs on the shoulder causing the slowing out here. moving to the closure for the overnight road work planned southbound 880 to 238 getting out of san leandro and over to the castro valley. that connector is closed. very light traffic and locals know you cut a corner there but that is overnight still going on, should be clearing any minute.

we'll watch for the slowing as they move the equipment and then we get here to the slowing. we see some slowing eastbound 80. i was originally told the fire, the little fire in the center divide was westbound but it could be affecting the eastbound lanes. one might be to address a small brush fire. no major concerns but now a ladder reported just around 24 and highway 13. a lot going on. nothing major, though. that's good stuff. back to you, sam. i'll take it from here, mike. happening today a chance at freedom this morning for the first time in almost nine years o.j. simpson is waking up inside a nevada prison with the possibility of becoming a free man. in just a few hours he will meet with members of the state parole board. a few questions and he along with millions expected to watch around the country will wait as the board votes on his free throw dom. freedom. >> my intent was not to rob from anybody. >> reporter: in just hours o.j. simpson will sit down before the nevada state parole board to ask for his freedom. >> and if ever there were a candidate that deserves to be released it's o.j. simpson. >> i am sorry for what has happened. >> reporter: this is the second time simpson will face the panel. after his conviction in 2008 for armed robbery, kidnapping, and other charges after he and a group of friends took sports memorabilia from two dealers at the palace station hotel and casino in las vegas. during almost nine years in prison, simpson has reportedly been a model inmate with no disciplinary issues. >> he may very well get parole just based upon the merits of his conduct in this case. >> reporter: a case that's not supposed to have any impact on thursday's hearing. >> we ask him to extend his fingers into the glove. >> reporter: is simpson's controversial acquittal after

the 1994 murder his ex-wife nicole brown and friend ron gold m goldman. a civil court found him liable for those murders and goldman's sister talked about simpson's possible parole in march. >> i'm starting to get anxious because i do believe he will be paroled. >> reporter: if paroled simpson's earliest release date would be october 1st. and if his parole is denied simpson will have to wait at least a year for his next parole hearing. back to you. >> all right, jay, thank you so much for that report. as you can imagine intense public interest here, laura, we're stay iing on top of the story. cheryl hurd will be there reporting. >> one we'll continue to follow as well. another one happening on the stanford university campus. there has been a report of a rape, a disturbing crime. it happened allegedly at one of the student residences. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez with what else we're learning this morning. kris? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. it seems stanford university police know who the suspect is.

they say that the victim knew him and that it happened, as you said, in one of the campus residence halls. now stanford police say the sexual assault was reported around 1:30 yesterday morning and, again, they do know where it happened. they were acquaintances, the victim and suspect, but police did not say why they were together. we can tell you that it is a 53-year-old man we're talking about. now according to the latest statistics available from stanford university there have been a number of sexual assaults on campus, some high-profile, as you know. there were 39 reported sex offenses on campus. 25 of which happened in student residences. only one of those overall cases was found to be unfounded. now you can find a link to those statistics if you want to see them for yourself in my twitter feed. i'm posting resources for sexual assault victims, whether it happens on a campus or anywhere

else. at stanford university, kris sanch sanchez, "today in the bay." 5:05 right now. developing news near yosemite where massive flames continue to grow. they are setting more people fleeing. >> you see the glow of the fire there. the smoke as well can be seen as far as idaho. here is where the fire stands this morning. we just checked cal fire's website and the fire has burned almost 46,000 acres. we ran some of the numbers overnight and found it's actually larger than san francisco. it's only 7% contained so far. b"today in the bay's" thom jensn with the fight to stop it from spreading any more. >> reporter: this is the historic town of coulterville, the latest community to get the evacuation orders and the people who live here say this is also a historic fire, one like they have never seen before. rushing up a hill from the bottom of a deep drainage in

just minutes. this torches a tree in no time before jumping the highway near coulterville. as people pack up their animals and belongings and roll out of town. >> it's devastating. we really haven't had something like this happen in our little town. >> reporter: the drive out blinded by thick smoke and embers as flames burn through the grass and brush licking the edges of the highway. some people staying behind, though, vowing to fight for their home and neighbors'. >> i will stay here until the devil demon drives me out. are. >> reporter: a portable weather lab arrived collecting data and images for fire officials. >> right here it's doing a wind profile so we can point it in different directions and the system will calculate a vertical wind profile up to almost 6,000 feet. >> reporter: this video from the last meteorologist shows how the fire is creating its own

swirling winds. >> we're going to continue watching the progress of firefighters battling the detwiler fire. our coverage never stops. had head to nbcbayarea.com for instant updates. a story we first broke on "today in the bay" yesterday morning. we are learning that neighbors of a walnut creek condo complex that went up in flames, think the fire was no accident. flames sparked just after midnight. the contra costa fire district says the tenant were not the home because they were moving out at the time. neighbors suspect the tenants were evicted after a history of police visits. they fear that fire could have been payback. people in the east bay may soon see a warning sign in support of local firefighters. the group is called east county voters for equal protection. on facebook leaders write they want to educate the public about money struggles. the group says it's planning to build a sign between livermore

and brentwood. they say they've already raised over $1,000 which is over half the cost of the sign. the group says firefighters need more stations to reduce response time. the search is still ongoing for a popular business owner in marin and he is still missing in tomales bay. search crews believe tod friend went overboard while boating. he is 70 years old and owns the tomales bay oyster company. searchers did find his boat circle but no sign of friend. he was not wearing a life jacket, according to people we spoke with. t tomales bay oyster company was established more than 100 years ago. it is that super popular spot for locals and tourists. watch your pets closely. we are learning more about coyote sightings here in the bay area. this is a photo of a coyote that was spotted in los gatos near blossom hill park. it's one of at least two coyote sightings just this week alone.

we investigated why there have been so many sightings. it's common this type of year. the animals are trying to feed their young. here is a tip. secure those trash cans. keep your pets the inside at dusk and at dawn. it is 5:09. you're making plans for the day. it's going to be a nice and warm day in napa and sonoma valleys but it will be cool to start. mid-60s at 9:00 in in the morning and then as we go through the day quickly warming temperature at lunch time. it will be 81 degrees and then some upper 80s later today. much cooler out at at&t park of at first pitch it will be 62 degrees and looking forward to a nice game with some cooler temperatures and breezy wind with mostly clear skies that are will be televised right here on nbc bay area. you can't make it to the stadium. we are going to have some nice weather today. i'll have a look at that temperature trend in three

minutes. mike starts us out with a crash in the tri-valley. a new crash. this is southbound 680 right there around mission boulevard. now as you come down out of the sunol area no slowing and no lanes blocked from what i understand but this just happened a few minutes ago. we'll let you know if anything shows up on our sensors. we'll update chp. we're looking over here chp shows us they had to close the off ramp. 280 coming down through mill millbray. that will be a factor but no slowing. over in the east bay the earlier closures 980 at 880, that little brush fire has cleared. we had a couple of brushfires that we're tracking and no problems getting to the bay bridge. thank you, mike. up next there is more trouble for an embattled south bay jail. four inmates hospitalized after a heroin overdose.

some plans. that's coming up at about 5:19. and looking at these great travel times, 580. the reason why it's so light, some folks are slowing off the 205 merge and an earlier crash. thank you very much, kari and mike. it is 5:4 right now. one of four inmates who overdose in the santa clara county jail in san jose still in the hospital. three others are back in had their cells this morning. sources tell nbc bay area news the men overdosed on heoin. deputies found them early wednesday morning. now the leader of a panel that tried to help improve jail operations is again calling for reform. >> there has to be new leadership to change the culture in the jail. >> now that is a judge who chaired a commission on reform which made 101 recommendations last year. the department of corrections and rehabilitation about drug

use in on. the study published in april says drug use had dropped by ne nearly a quarter since lawmakers approved over $10 million to stop contraband drugs from coming in on. get ready for washington to be all abuzz once again next week. president trump's son and adviser jared kushner is expect ed to testify behind closed doors. kushner will be interviewed by staff of the senate intelligence committee in a closed session monday. that is according to his attorney. the committee is investigating russian interference in the 2016 election. trum's eldest son and orme toer trump campaign manager paul manafort have been invited to testify but it's not confirmed at this point if they will. starting this morning people flying from the u.s. to canada and mexico will go through extra screening if carrying certain security devices. these checks on laptops and

tablets. news had questions about what led up to the increased checks. officials say they tested two prototype laptop bombs based on new terrorist technology. the secretary of homeland security tells our pete williams the bombs destroyed the planes and for the moment increased checks are preventing an outright ban. >> adobe systems has a huge presence in san jose is now reportedly expanding. the mercury news reports the software giant just leased the building in downtown. both locations just a short distance from the company's headquarters. still wait iing. some 3,000 employ will be moving into the new tower the company is leasing. >> more business and tech news this morning. facebook working on a way for news organizations to charge readers for articles they read

afternoon we'll have music in the park happening and it will be at 80 degrees at 5:00 and then dropping back to the low 70s so it's going to be perfect enjoying this thursday evening out there. and looking live right now at squaw valley we do still have some snow on the upper mountain resorts but, of course, all of the snow has melted farther down the summit. reaching into the mid-70s, upper 70s tomorrow and then 84 degrees on saturday. for san francisco it looks very nice over the next seven days. no major changes here. you can still leave the air conditioning off even as temperature heat up for the inland valleys it's going to be really hot this weekend. up to 98 degrees on sunday and it still looks like it will be very hot into the start of next week. mike, you spotted something on

the san mateo bridge? gusty wind reported overnight from chp. i was tracking here in the distance some flashing lights. the flashing lights continue. there may be one lane blocked. i'll track that but still we'll see what other information we can get. what's going on as well. now looking here to fremont as well, the rest of the bay shows a smooth flow of traffic for the most part. no major injuries and it sounds like everything is off to the shoulder but that is a distraction coming down around the bend out of sunol. a look with our waze system as well. this is on 205 approaching greenville. an unusual delay for heavy traffic. over here you'll see the waze

parking spaces available for car-sharing companies like welcome back on your thursday morning. san francisco is making more parking spaces available for car sharing companies like zip car but not necessarily for you if you're just looking for a spot. "the sf examiner" reporting transportation officials have approved full perfemits for car sharing companies and they're making 1,000 parking spots available specifically to them. up until now the city was running a pilot program certain parking spots for those companies. plans for mixed use project near san jose light rail station now on hold. "the mercury news" the

we )re almost to the weekend.. a live look outside in rise and shine on a thursday morning. 5:30 right now on the dot and a live look outside. this will motivate you to get outside today, maybe have lunch outside in downtown. a cute area as we get off to a start. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. it is a nice start to our day, kari hall. yes, some nice, cool temperatures for some hot coffee and also we are going to have some hot weather later on today. we're up to 83 degrees in the south bay. the peninsula with a high and 88 degrees in the tri-valley. low 90s there and san francisco will see those high temperatures reaching up to 66 degrees. if you can stomach this there will be a victory party for joey chestnut and that will be going

conservative speaker scheduled to speak at uc berkeley. >> officials say they don't think they can accommodate him on that date. pete suratos joining us now live from berkeley with details on the letter the university sent to organizers of the speech, pete. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, guys. yes, the latest person to run into this issue with my low, with ann coulter but now conservative commentator ben shapiro who is running into issues as far as speaking here at the uc berkeley campus. as you mentioned uc berkeley did send a letter to the berkeley college republicans who were organizing this explaining why they would be unable to accommodate shapiro. now they're saying they would not be able to accommodate him on the proposed date, thursday, september 14, at 7:00 p.m. because the organize are saying they would need space for about 500 people so they wouldn't be able to accommodate it. they he are offering other venues on campus which would require rental fees but that would have to be booked a long time in advance so there's no

bld clot last week. that was the may owe clinic hospital in phoenix. we asked the director of neurooncology dr. susan chang about this kind of fast-moving cancer. >> no therapy subsequent to the surgery is performed, the tumors are so aggressive, we're looking at months of survival. with treatment, we can extend that. the average is probably about a year to 15 months. >> dr. chang says mccain's overall good health does work in his favor but he is 80 years old and she says that will certainly work against him. the mccain family right now is asking the public for its prayers. a developing story in the east bay. this morning the search for answers continues after a father was gunned down while pushing his baby in a stroller. it all happened this in hayward. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live with what we're learning about the investigation into this, bob, and do deputies have any lead on a suspect? >> reporter: as far as what

they're telling us, no. good morning to you, sam and laura. the alameda county sheriff's office tells us they have not id'd any suspect nor made any arrests. they are looking into whether or not this may be gang related. a father was pushing his 3-month-old son in a stroller through a neighborhood on willow avenue in the unincorporated area of hayward yesterday around 3:00 in the afternoon. that's when someone shot the father a number of times. he was pronounced dead on the sce scene. his baby was not hurt. investigators are also looking into whether this might have been a drive-by shooting. we spoke with a man who says he knew the victim. he tells us his friend was happy spending time with his new child. >> oh, man, he was happy. he called him little man. >> we believe there's an aso associated vehicle, there are suspect related to a vehicle. whether they got out on foot or shot from the vehicle, those are all things we're work iing throh right now.

>> reporter: the alameda county sheriff's office did take custody of the baby and they have been working on trying to find the mother. the victim's name has not yet within released but a sergeant us he was he 30 years old. >> thanks for the latest there, bob. 5:38 right now. we could know more next week about the future of mass transit in the north bay. reports rail transit officials are close to getting federal approval to start regular commute service. the smart chief tells the paper that he talked with the railroad administration and they raised no red flags. you could be our smart traffic anchor. >> sometimes i try to be -- i try to be all the time. over here looking at a smart, easy, quick drive. around the bay mostly green sensors. no major issues for the south bay. i'll let you know if any lanes

are blocked. we had lanes blocked 680 down to 24. continued recovery through pleasant hill. approaching highway 24 because, again, multiple crews cleared out of the area. an easy drive over to the bay bridge. you see these travel times look great. no problems. the metering lights are on. of course you have the backup there. another bridge, the san mateo bridge, tracking those flashing lights mid span. looks like they cleared and we're seeing more company and the sign that talks about gusty winds has cleared from the san jose. >> mike, thank you very much. it's time to look at the weekend forecast because we're just a couple days away at this point. >> it is friday eve and it's going to be a nice weekend but really hot in some areas and there will be some places where you can go to cool off like the coast and the bay. it will be at 68 degrees for the high temperature along the coast. the bay at 84 degrees and then check out the valleys, 97 degrees and hotter on sunday, up to 98 degrees inland. while the bay will be at 86

degrees and 69 for the coast. and one event going on will be in redwood city, the blues, arts, and barbecue festival happening from noon to 8:00. we'll have some beautiful weather for that with high temperatures reaching into the mid-70s. you cannot beat that. and on sunday we will still have the clouds and the fog throughout the morning. temperatures starting out in the mid-50s. some very nice and cool weather for the runners and if you want to spectate good for that, too. in santa cruz it is going to be a nice weekend with some high temperatures for tomorrow reaching 74 degrees. a little bit cooler once we get more clouds than fog for the weekend with high temperatures reaching into the mid-60s on sunday. napa valley is going to be hot this weekend from the upper 80s tomorrow to some low to mid-90s for the rest of the weekend. make sure you find some air conditioning there. and if you want some natural air conditioning we can just take a look at this view.

it is 5:44 right now on this thursday morning and we wake up to some clear skies as we take a live look outside at fremont already busy early this morning and as we go through the day our temperatures go from the low 60s at 9:00 into the low 70s by early after but it does continue to warm up from there into the low 80s by 3:00. it will be a nice and warm day, make sure you enjoy it because those temperatures crank up for the weekend. i'll have a look at that coming up at about 49. and we are looking at travel

times. middle of the screen, 238 does show slowing while indicating the back portion of the east bay. we'll show you what's going on coming up. mike, kari, lock forward to hearing that. 5:45. developing in the south bay it is still not clear when or if a san jose police dog will return to duty after bitinging a toddler during a call. the 22-month-old baby that was bitten last friday. police officers were serving an arrest warrant for a wanted felon at a house on bird avenue in san jose. officers say the suspect tried to run so they brought in the k-9 unit. police add in mitt to the fact the dog jumped up and bit the toddler while sitting on a couch. we talked with the child's mom. >> the dog came inside. the first thing the dog did he bit my daughter and i was just screaming, telling him, oh, my god, the dog just bit my daughter. >> the familiy right now tells s that they are considering suing the san jose police department.

"today" show the important information parents need to know to keep your kids safe. a major east bay city cracking down on tobacco especially when it's marketed to kids. it was voted unanimously to prohibit the sale of flavored tobacco and flavored wraps. the american heart association has been critical of flavored tobacco saying companies are using the sweet taste as a way to bait young people into addiction. san francisco approved a similar ban last month. it is what the people wanted. no more personal tree maintenance in san francisco. it will be paid for by the city. it's called street tree sf. voters supported that initiative in november and it is rolling out this week. all tree maintenance is in the hands of public works employees. property owners were responsible for their own upkeep nearly 125,000 trees in san francisco. >> i think it's great. it's a huge help.
