have worked so closely with john mccain through the years. >> that's our breaking news overnight. senator john mccain, the arizona republican, one of the most vocal lawmakers on capitol hill, diagnosed with brain cancer. we have full coverage, and we'll start with national correspondent peter alexander. peter, good morning. >> savannah, good morning to you. that news met with stunned disbelieve among mccain's colleagues here on capitol hill. it's already uniting bitterly divided republicans and democrats in support of the senator. >> he is one of america's bravest fighters, and this morning john mccain may be facing his toughest battle yet. on capitol hill his political partner and close friend lindsey graham emotional. >> this disease has never had a more worthy opponent. >> mr. senator. >> the 80-year-old mccain diagnosed with a brain tumor after doctors removed a blood

clot above his left eye last friday. overnight an outpouring of support from both sides of the aisle. president trump offering his thoughts and prayers. president obama, mccain's 2008 rival, tweeting cancer doesn't know what it's up against. give it hell, john. while mccain recovers at home in arizona, the mayo clinic says he and his family are reviewing treatment options, which may include chemotherapy and radiation. doctors have diagnosed mccain's brain tumor for glioblastoma. he has overcome several bouts of melanoma. his wife, cindy, posting this wedding photo overnight calling him her hero. from his daughter, megan, an emotional letter that reads, "it won't surprise you to learn that in all of this, the one of us who is most confident and calm is my father. cancer may afflict him in many ways, but it will not make him surrender. nothing ever has." mccain, a former navy pilot, survived five and a half years as a prisoner of war in vietnam.

his grit and determination defining his more than three decades in public service. that includes two presidential runs. >> i always like to move forward with legislation that i haven't seen. >> never afraid to disagree with his own party, mccane's maverick reputation more present than ever during the health care debate, but just last week his health issues prompting senate leaders to delay the vote to repeal and replace obama care until after mccain returned to washington. president trump sending his well wishes earlier this week. >> we hope john mccain gets better very soon. because we miss him. he is a crusty voice in washington. plus, we need his vote. >> reporter: the man known for clashing with colleagues in both parties. this morning bringing the opposing sides together. >> god knows how this ends. not me. >> senator mccain's office says he will decide when to return as he consults with his doctors.

it was his friend lindsey graham that broke the news to many of his senate colleagues. he said he spoke to mccain for about five minutes largely about the diagnosis before the conversation turned to other issues, like health care reform. mccain's message to the other senators? get back to work. willie, savannah. >> peter, thanks very much. >> let's bring in medical correspondent dr. john torres. dr. torres, good to see you this morning. glioblastoma. we heard terms like aggressive and malignant. i know you're not treating senator mccain personally, but generally speaking, what kind of prognosis do we expect? >> prognosis is not that good. on average someone with a glioblastoma live 14 months. five year survival rates run 10%. not very good either. the one thing about this tumor, this brain cancer in particular, is very aggressive. it's very malignant. again, it has that low survival rate. >> i read that mayo clinic's statement, and it said that they believe they had gotten the tumor. it sounded like they had gotten most of it. that's not the end of the story, as i understand it. >> if you look closely at the

statement, they got the tumor that they could see. the problem is there's parts of it they can't see. microscopic parts. if those are left behind, which unfortunately they usually are because they're hard to get, they grow as well. this is a fast-growing tumor and it's aggressive, and typically it comes back. it's very hard to treat. >> as peter said, senator mccain has a history of melanoma. he has had several cases to it. could there be a connection between the two? >> there are some thoughts that those two are connected genetically in rare cases. more than likely these are two different types of cancers he has, which is not unusual for somebody at his age that has had cancer before. the next part is radiation treatment and then chemotherapy on top of that. the problem is with those two, the radiation and chemotherapy, they can take a toll on his health. they might do radiation and hold off on chemo or might do both. it just depends. >> some there's a moment where

senator mccain asked a question that was meandering and confused comey himself. senator mccain even joked later and said i'm sorry, i was up too late watching the diamondbacks game. can there be a connection there? >> there could be a connection. this brain tumor was in the frontal lobe. that part of the brain is responsible for a lot of things, including memory, language, decision making. it's usual logical i a sign. confusion, headaches, weakness. those kinds of things. that is what clues them in to get a cat scan. i think that's probably what happened in this case. >> our well wishes to senator mccain and his family. dr. torres, thank you so much. >> thank you, doctor. a lot more to get to this morning, including an explosive new interview with the president. the commander in chief sounding off on a wide range of issues and lashing out against his own attorney general. nbc white house correspondent kristen welker with more on that. kristen, good morning. >> savannah, good morning to you. the president's interview with the "new york times" covers everything from domestic to foreign policy. the biggest bombshell, he takes

sharp aim at his attorney general. overnight president trump speaking out against one of his earliest supporters in an interview with the "new york times", the president said he never would have appointed jeff sessio sessions. he recuses himself from the russia investigation. the times -- >> jeff sessions takes the job, gets into the job. i then have -- which, frankly, i think is very unfair to the president. how do you take a job and then recuse yourself? if he would have recused himself before the job, i would have said thanks, jeff, but i can't. on james comey, he is accusing the fired fbi director of trying to leverage a dossier of damaging information to keep his job. mr. trump also warning special counsel robert mueller that he would cross a red line if he would try to delve into trump

three small children. a funeral for all of those victims is scheduled for next week. a raging wildfire that's forced thousands of california residents from their homes has nearly doubled now in size. the fire burning southwest of yosemite national park is now almost 46,000 acres in size. flames are threatening about 1,500 homes and buildings. eight structures already have been destroyed. >> we are looking at this big area of high pressure. it is hot and humid throughout two-thirds of the u.s. 71 million people under a heat advisory or heat warnings from the midwest down to texas. all the way into the northeast. look at the temperatures today. the heat index says it will feel like 108 in st. louis. 99 in cincinnati. tallahassee, 99.

we're back at 7:30 thursday morning. the 20th of july, 2017. good morning to everyone. we've got willie in for matt this morning. hoda is here, and we have such a busy news morning. >> we do where. >> a lot of different topics, and we begin with the sad news about airy senator john mccain. he has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. this follows his surgery last week to remove a blood clot above his left eye. in a statement from his office, mccain and his family say they're now reviewing their treatment options, including a combination of chemotherapy and radiation. president trump is taking his own attorney general to task. in an interview with the "new york times," the president says he never would have offered jeff sessions the job of attorney general if he had known sessions was going to step away and recuse himself from the russia

investigation. >> how do you take a job and then recuse yourself? if he would have recused himself before the job, i would have said, thanks, jeff, but i can't, you know, i'm not going to take you. >> president trump also had sharp words for special counsel robert mueller, who is conducting the russia probe, warning him about looking into any trump family finances unrelated to that investigation. and take a look at this frightening scene in nappal. a 14-year-old girl is crossing a flooded roadway. she suddenly disappears. she falls into a drain. a woman recording the incident, you can hear her screaming from a nearby building, but here's some good news. moments later the girl emerges from an underground sewer about 30 yards away. a bystander is there to pluck her out of that rushing water. amazingly, that story ends well. she's okay. officials have since ordered that all the drains be covered. that is a miracle right there. >> yeah. scary to look at. we mentioned it's a busy news day. o.j. simpson's closely watched parole hearing now just a few short hours away. he is 70 years old now.

he has served nearly nine years for an armed robbery in las vegas, and he is asking for officials to release him in october. chris darden served as one of the prosecutors during simpson's double murder trial back in 1995 and wrote a book about that experience. it's called "in contempt." chris, good morning. it's good to see you again. >> good morning. >> o.j. back in the headlines. >> oh, yes. >> put your lawyer hat on. do you think he will be granted parole and then take your lawyer hat off, how does that sit with you? >> well, i -- you know, i imagine he will be granted parole, unfortunately. what can we say? you know, he is not in jail for murder. he is in jail for robbery. it's an aiz amazing thing that can get a 33 year sentence and only do nine years. that's just incredible to me. you do 25%, 22% of your sentence in the state of nevada and they release you. >> when you think about him walking around as a free man, the potential of that, how does that hit you? >> well, you know, i like the

photographs of o.j. in handcuffs more than i like the photographs of o.j. with the golf club in his hand. you know, i think he has a lot to account for. we have yet to extract from him, you know, the punishment that he deserves. >> on a professional level, chris, this parole board should not take into account what happened 22 years ago in los angeles and his acquittal in the murder trial and everything they heard around that trial. do you think on a human level they'll be able to discount that and just focus on what happened in nevada? >> well, i think it will be difficult for them. you know, the board -- i'm sure these are people who believe in law, who believe in justice, and, you know, justice ain't killing two people, butchering two people, and getting away with it. you know, the murders in l.a. are slightly relevant because o.j. simpson is robbing people of property that really doesn't belong to him. he claims it belongs to him, but it actually belongs to the gomez. >> do you think that o.j. simpson is capable of rehabilitation? he says he has changed. he is different. do you think that's possible when it comes to o.j.?

>> well, i think that if you really want to see the real o.j., you look back at the video footage of o.j. leaving that hotel that night after robbing these people, after, you know, lining people up against a wall while a guy behind him, you know, stands there with a pistol pointed at them, but you look at his demeanor leaving that day. he is happy. he is jovial. that's how he really feels about this robbery. now, today he says, oh, i wish i could take it back, et cetera. well, yeah, he does because he got caught and he got nine years. >> they do say he is a model prisoner. they've been saying that about him. would you agree with that? >> well, you know, the fact that he is a model prisoner doesn't mean he is a model citizen, and the fact that he is it a model prisoner doesn't mean he doesn't pose a risk to the public. >> i don't know if you have seen excerpts of his parole hearing a few years ago, and he talked about what he has done in prison, and he talked about some of the things he has learned. when you watch that, did you think this is a man who has been humbled or chastenned or who has changed? >> i thought he was the same old guy i met in 1994, 1995. a very manipulative person.

a narcissist. i think he was saying what he needed to say, and he is doing what he needs to do to get out of prison. i mean, i heard that he leads a bible study class or something to that effect. that's not the o.j. simpson i know. >> do you believe, chris, i'll ask you bluntly, that o.j. simpson is a danger to the public if he is out walking the streets? >> i don't know. one of the things the parole board will have to review are his psychiatric records. i'm assuming that he received some psychiatric treatment, some therapy of some kind, and i would think that if he received therapy or psychiatric help that they should have addressed the issue of the murders. >> if you were on the parole board, what's the one question you would want to ask o.j.? >> did you kill ron and nicole? >> of course, that's not legally relevant. >> that's the one question i would like to ask. i think that's the one question everybody would like to ask. i think everybody ought to call the nevada parole board and tell them, hey, ask them. if you really are reformed and rehabilitated, if you really are remor remorseful, if you are really a

born-again christian, then let's move this discussion forward. admit the sins. >> you have been so candid, and we've had that pleasure of talking to you before about the impact of this trial and this case and you and i even joked about it this morning. it never goes away. it always comes back. how is it for you to be sitting here today and be reliving all of this? >> it's amazing. you know, it all started last summer with the television series on fx and then someone wins an oscar. people win emmys. we reintroduce all of this to a whole new generation of people, and it goes on and on. now we have the parole hearing of the century. it's incredible that this thing is being stringed aeamed all ov world for people to watch and witness. >> last time you were here, you said you wish you had never been part of it. never walked into that courtroom. >> never. >> still feel that way? >> i still feel that way. >> chris darden, always good to get your perspective. you know a lot about this case. thank you so much. >> thank you. >> we should mention, by the way, chris is featured in

savannah? >> thank you very much. more than two decades after he was acquitted of murder and nine years after his conviction of armed robbery and kidnapping, o.j. simpson's fate could come down to a few krut minutes today. in lovelock nevada where simpson will seek an early release this morning. >> reporter: in just a couple hours o.j. simpson will learn his future when he goes before a parole board. he will be here at the lovelock correctional center in nevada. he'll appear by video conference before the parole board which is a couple hours away in carson city. this hearing is expected to last only about 15 minutes. during that time parole commissioners can pepper simpsons with questions. a friend or relative could speak on simpson's behalf and one of the robbery victims says he plans to testify and will tell the parole board he thinks o.j. simpson should be released. the parole board will deliberate privately before coming back out and voting publicly. simpson is now 70 years old.

we were going to be doing going forward. you better get plenty of rest because you're going to be worked really hard. so it was a huge shock. in terms of the character stuff, kermit becoming stale or bitter, it isn't true in my mind. but the funny part of that is, i would expect the people saying that to have been my staunchest allies. >> were you personally difficult to work with? that's really the criticism. you offered notes and were hard to work with, quite frankly. >> i offered notes. i don't think that makes someone difficult. it was totally an idea of trying to do what was best for the muppets in terms of receiving material and ideas and concepts that were well out of the bounds of the character. >> cheryl pointed out that you are not kermit. you are simply somebody who plays the role of kermit. >> yeah. it's really interesting about that. in my mind, my mentoring with jim tells me that the minute the muppets are reduced to being roles that are auditioned for

trial and ordered to pay tens of millions. this is the story which so many of our national fault lines intercepted, race, celebrity, justice system, our media, and it all played out before a huge audience on television. now simpson will appear before a television camera once again in a few moments making his case to the nevada parole board. he'll speak by video link from the correctional center. >> we see the board has taken their seats. still waiting for mr. simpson to enter the room at the other end. nbc's joe fryar is there covering this story for us. joe, walk us through what we are about to see. >> reporter: o.j. simpson will be sitting in that room answering questions from the commissioner. to his left, his attorney, mall conlaverne. also inside that room some of his supporters. that include his sister, shirley baker, his daughter.

there is someone else who is in that room right now, and that's one of the robbery victims, bruce fromock. he has said he forgives simpson. he is set to testify in favor of o.j. simpson's release. our nbc senior investigative correspondent cynthia mcfadden is also here. she covered the simpson murder trial in the '90s. cynthia, that trial, that case loomed so large over o.j. simpson. but as a legal matter, it is not supposed to come in to play for this parole question. >> exactly right, savannah. of course, many people believe that the sentence he received for this armed robbery was influenced by the fact that he did not get convicted in 1995. >> all right, cynthia. they have an on-time start of this hearing. let's take you there now to watch live. the officer and case worker assigned this morning come to the table there so we can see you and let us know who we're working with?
