i'm coming from texas. back to new york after a year away. i was working the last couple years as a correspondent in new york. and in dallas. i used to get calls as a correspondent to go cover stories random calls in the middle of the night. you know, get up and go, now i know i'm going to get that call in the middle of the night to come here. absolutely. >> can you furnish your apartment and still be home for the time to come. >> absolutely. >> welcome. >> ready to bring everybody the news this morning. and speaking of the news this morning, a direct threat, we begin from the white house. after the president took to twitter to blast his fellow republicans. saying if republicans don't repeal and replace the disastrous obamacare, the reprecushions will be far greater than any of them understand. claiming his fellow gop people were doing very little free throw tekt their president. the president's tweets come ahead of a scheduled statement on health care as the senate gets the long awaited vote this week. on mr. trump's mind also is pardons. news outlets report he was

russian funds to finance any business ventures. he also goes into quite a bit more detail about that june 2016 meeting with the kremlin linked lawyer saying he was invited to attend that meeting by donald trump jr. when he arrived the attorney was talking about a a. dopdoptions t kushner realized quickly this was a waste of his time, basically, and even went so far to e-mail an assistant to ask the assistant to call him to give him an excuse to leave that meeting. now today's session before the senate intelligence committee will be closed to the public and kushner will not be under oath. he is scheduled to appear tuesday before the house congressional committee. back to you. >> all right. say sarah, thank you. san antonio police are investigating a horrific case of human smuggling. at least nine people are dead and more than a dozen others fighting for their lives after they were found inside the back of a semitruck in sweltering heat.

two school age children were injured. police say they found over three dozen people in the truck after a day of 100-degree temperatures. the driver is now in federal custody. nbc's sarah rosario is in san antonio with the latest. what can you tell us? >> federal charges are expected today against that driver as you mentioned. an agent says the people found inside the back of that 18 wheeler are the victims of human smuggling, most of them in their 20z and 30s. one even as young as 10 years old. cops were called, we're told several people tried to escape from the truck running into the woods nearby. others hitching rides from people who came to get them. today federal investigators say they plan to continue searching for those victims and say more arrests are to come. >> with signs held, protesters called for immigration reform in san antonio, texas, after dozens of migrant workers were found smug n smuggled in a tractor-trailer

with no air conditioning on saturday night. >> we arrived on the scene and found eight people dead in the back of that trailer. >> another died at the hospital. police were tipped off by a walmart employee who called 911 after someone escaped and begged for water. >> again, they were very hot to the touch. so these people were in that trailer without any signs of any type of water. so you're looking at a lot of heat stroke, a the lot of dehydration. >> reporter: 39 people were inside the truck. the survivors rushed to area hospitals with life threatening injuries. erat tight doors turned the trailer into an oven with temperatures in san antonio exceeding 100 degrees. >> devastating. it's horrible. i can't believe that, you know, some people could even do that to, you know, human people. >> reporter: investigators gave no details on the victims' nationality, where they start order where they were headed. to date driver james bradley jr. from clearwater, florida, will stand before a federal judge as investigators try to find everyone behind this operation.

and officials have confirmed this morning that several of the victims inside that truck are from guatemala and mexico. authorities work to make more arrests in this case, the texas border patrol reported four other truck seizures in texas this month alone. meantime, the survivors of this tragedy are still in the hospital this morning fighting for their lives. reporting live in san antonio, sarah rosario. >> thank you. new video this morning of a dramatic rescue outside of tucson, arizona. 17 hikers were stranded by raging waters from flash flooding. eight of them including a 4-year-old boy were hoisted by a rescue helicopter while the remaining nine hikers were waiting for flood watters to subside for a ground rescue. last week ten people were swept away and killed by a flash flood at a popular swimming hole north of phoenix. and heavy damage is being reported this morning in queens county maryland after a possible

tornado touched down. there the storm hit multiple homes blowing the roofs right off some of them. one injury is reported. police say 8,000 people are without power. also emergency services are asking residents to shelter in place because of the downed wires. bill karins is here with a look at our monday and week ahead, bill. how we looking? >> good morning to you. welcome, philip. scary thing. that tornado was at 1:00 in the morning. people were in the homes. thankfully it wasn't enough to zroit houses. that heavy rain is now moving up through areas of southern new england, new york city is even clearing out. there is still more storms in northern new england. there is not a lot of bad weather to be had. we've been talking about how dry it's been in the west. that is tip calf the dypical of season. the firefighters out there fighting the blazes. it's still brutal. even into tomorrow, not much of a change in areas like phoenix. we do cool it off a little bit. salt lake city still hot. a little warm in seattle. beautiful though, 86 andand ari.

the six term arizona senator enjoyed an amazing hike with both father and daughter on a bench looking out at the view. mccain even sweeted an image as he spent the weekend outdoors writing, enjoying zebra falls and beautiful oak creek, arizona with my friend joe harper. at least 38 people have been killed killed and more than 60 injured in an attack in kabul. the casualties could rise. authorities say a car bomb rammed into a bus carrying government employees in the western part of the afghan capital. kabul's police chief says most of the victims so far are civilians. nbc's reporter is live now in london with more. what is the latest? >> well, philip, the taliban have claimed responsibility in yet another brazen attack in afghanistan. they say they were targeting two government buses carrying intelligence officers but government security forces said it was a small bus owned by the ministry of mines that was destroyed in the blast and all

the passengers were mining employees. as so often the case in afghanistan, it's ordinary citizens that bore the brunt of this attack with three civilian vehicles and 15 shops destroyed in the blast. the death toll of 38 and 6 o 0 you mentioned said to be civilians. they're weighing off the strategic options including the possibility of sending in more troops. now the taliban have launched a string of attacks around the country that have sparked off fighting in more than six provinces and it was just in may that we saw massive truck bomb attack that killed 150 people in a wave of unrelenting violence that plagued the country. >> we'll have to see how the white house responds. thank you. just ahead, is the u.s. economy slowing down? cnbc with some fascinating detail next. the lengths that some waiters

the international monetary fund is kucutting the growth forecas for the u.s. this year. the imf says the move primarily reflects the sum that is president trump's plans to cut taxes and spend more on infrastructure won't provide a boost to growth. some automakers could be trimming their model lineups. general motors has put six of its cars under review and is evaluating whether to cancel them outright in the coming years. they include the chevy volt and rethink why automakers comes as consumers continue to demand suvs and pickups over sedans. and speaking of cars, gas prices are inching up. the latest industry survey shows the average price of regular unleaded rose a penny over the past two weeks to $2.32 a gallon. and that comes after 11 straight weeks of declines. gas prices are about ten cents above where they were a year ago, philip. back to you. >> cnbc's landon dowdy, thank you.
