investigating. >> heavy police presence. bob redell joins us. bob, what prompt this hed this response? good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, sam and laura. san jose police have broken down some of the barrier. they did are have several blocks taped off as a crime scene but they lifted some of the crime scene tape and condensed their perimeter. around 12:45 reports of shots fired in or around the apartment complex unit here that's located in this upscale retail complex. they did go in and we understand they have taken one person into custody and we spoke to employees waiting outside the perimeter trying to get to their jobs. this is the conversation they had earlier. >> they're not allowed to release any information. there were shots fired in the apartment. trying to secure the area and we

until toxicology results are complete. ro the search for a missing man takes a tragic turn. crews found his body in the waters this weekend. 70-year-old charles friend who went by tod, disappeared from his boat in tomales bay last week. they were searching for him. friend owned the tomales bay oyster company. the company posted on its facebook page that friend's body was found. he was not wearing a life vest and is believed to have fallen off his boat. this morning napa police trying to track down the woman who vandalized a popular restaurant. police posted these pictures captured by surveillance camera s at brazilian restaurant. the woman allegedly vandalized the business with spray paint and stole linens worth hundreds of dollars. police are hoping the public can help identify her. 5:06. community members will be meeting with alameda county

supervisors to try to figure out alternatives to jail expansion. there's a group called the decarcerate that has invited those impacted by the criminal justice system to attend today's meeting. that will be held in oakland. they believe attention needs to pivot from are jail expansion to better mental health treatment. today's meeting starts at 9:30 in the morning. the pressure against requiring dog owners to keep their pets on leashes is growing. the marin ig reports 37,000 people have signed an online petition calling on secretary of the interior ryan zeng to step in. if the rule is adopted it would apply to all golden gate recreational areas in marin, san francisco, and san mateo counties. president trump's executive order allowing for more oil and gas exploration and drilling has plenty of critics in marin county. that is because two protected marine sanctuaries could be affected by it. reporting this morning that representative jerrod hoffman of san rafael and 20 other members

of congress are asking the trump administration to extend the public comment period on this order. the current comment period is slated to end this wednesday and lawmakers now are asking to extend that by another 30 days and they are urging the public to get involved. it is 5:08. today's hiking trail forecast for the east bay or just spending time at the park will be a nice one. make sure you get out there but it will be heating up for some of those inland areas. we'll start out at 61 degrees with some mainly clear skies and a light breeze. i think by late morning that will be the best time to get out there and hike and then we'll see the temperatures rising into the upper 80s today with some gusty winds, bringing it back down to 80 degrees and will be much cooler out there at at&t park. first pitch as the pirates come in town will be at 7:15. we'll see those temperatures at about 60 degrees and more fog growing in, drizzle, too. make sure you have nice, warm clothes. we'll take a look at today's

show with slowing. right on schedule coming in through the tri-valley. an absolutely horrifying story to tell you about. a teenager behind bars this morning accused of using instagram live in the moments before and after a deadly crash. chp says 18 ye-year-old sanchezs driving in the central valley when she lost control of her car. two 14-year-old girls were also in the car. one of those girls was her sister who was ejected. the other was seriously injured in the accident. investigators right now are looking into reports sanchez was live on instagram while she was driving under the influence. sanchez is now in the merced county jail on charges of dui and vehicular manslaughter. this morning we're trying to find out what caused a small plane to make an emergency landing at reid-hillview airport in san jose this weekend. investigators say the plane tilted while landing. one of its wings hit the ground

making the plane go off the runway yesterday. the pilot was injured but is expected to be okay. we're told investigators are still looking into it. muni service is back to normal after weekend testing that forced a lot of people to make adjustments. muni shut the underground light rail tunnel down from west portal to montgomery street to test out the new fleet of trains. project leaders say there were no real hiccups along the way, at least as far as the testing is concerned. if everything stays on track, no pun intended, muni hopes to debut the trains by this fall. more light rail closures are planned throughout august. that would be on weekend and after 9:30 week nights. >> a little pun intended? palo alto has been upgraded parking garages with stations for electric vehicles and more on the way. the city will unveil at the garage in bryant street. drivers can get a charge from the garage on webster. they are installing at cambridge

avenue. wall street may get a charge out of google. good morning. google's parent company alphabet, alphabet has to pay a nearly $3 billion fine so silicon valley will be watching how alphabet compensates for that. 200 other companies report this week. wall street could start the week in the red. the federal open market committee starts its two-day interest rate meeting as well, that's tomorrow. president trump has been trumpeting all the hot economy news and the record stock market but the fed could put the kabosh on some of that by tapping the economic brakes. the fed raised interest rates for the third this year at its meetinging back in june. the movie "dunkirk" did well over the weekend easily winning the number one spot. one critic called it a near virtual reality experience. apple has a new ad that looks a bit like a movie starring the rock who i looked up is the best

79 in palo alto. in san francisco, 65 in the embarcadero and novato up to 76 degrees. it will be a nice day to head to santa cruz. temperatures right here on the boardwalk will stay in the mid-60s today. we'll have some clouds mixing in, too. for san francisco expect temperatures to be in the mid-60s this afternoon and then if you're heading further north to napa we'll go from the mid-60s at 11:00 to the upper 70s today. that's not bad at all. but then going to hit the links at half moon bay, the clouds and the fog will hang around all day long and we'll only see the high temperatures there reach into the lower 60s. as we get a look at san francisco's forecast the next several days, mostly 60s throughout the week. low 70s in time for the weekend. and while san francisco warm up, inland areas will be back into the upper 90s again. looks pretty much like a repeat of the weekend we just had as we are going to see those temperatures ramping up over the next few days. and coming up in less than 20

airlines are all paying big fines welcome back. 5:24 on your monday. delta, frontier and american airlines, all of those carriers are paying big fines over claims they violated consumers' rights. according to the transportation department, american airlines failed to make timely refunds. delta under reported baggage complaints and frontier bumped passengers without asking for volunteers first. the airlines did not acknowledge any wrongdoing but delta is paying out a $200,000 fine. frontier is paying the most, $400,000. it's 5:24 right now. >> laura, from planes to cars, gm considering phasing out the chevy volt. their plug-in gas brid. the company is reviewing the volt plus six other cars in the fleet because of demand or lack

when police arrived they found that one of the bullets from the unit traveling fortunately did not hurt any of the people or hit any of the people in the unit. police evacuated the units and made contact with the two men where the gunshots came from. they spoke to them. they say that they did come out. they are trying to find out what came up to the gun being fired, was it accidental, that's still part of the investigation. the other people have been allowed back. bob redell, "today in the bay." word of a death investigation in the east bay. police say they found a body in

a remote part of chabot park. they told us it is a man. we're trying to find out more information but investigators right now don't know the victim's identity and they have not indicated if they are looking into foul play. a rash of car break-ins, both brentwood and livermore police are searching the suspects who damaged more than cars. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is joining us live with this crime spree, really where it began, pete. we understand you did some digging for us. what are you learning? >> reporter: good morning to you sam. according to a report in the san jose mercury news reno brentwood police say the suspects broke into about 17 cars here in this parking lot in the hampton inn and stole one white lexus in the process and this took place on friday morning. our assignment desk looked into this. we confirmed with livermore police the white lexus was spotted in is yosurveillance ca footage that they were able to obtain from a resident in the area. we know the suspect drove about 30 minutes south to livermore where cording to surveillance

camera footage handed over by a resident shows the suspects canvassing the area eventually breaking into several cars. now this took place on the same day when multiple homes were targeted by vandals with eggs, m-80s and other projectiles. a look at the crime stat for this year alone on the brentwood police website and shows there were 29 car burglaries and 48 reports of vandalism. police are still looking for the three to four suspects responsible for those car robberies. we're still waiting to get some more information on descriptions. contact livermore. we're live in brentwood. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> breaking nevovernight, a possible tornado on maryland's eastern shore. happening in queen anne's county about 50 miles east of washington, d.c. while there's still no

confirmation if a twister touched down we do know a violent system pound that had region downing trees and causing power outages. so far no reports of any major injuries. developing this morning, firefighters still hard at work right now trying to contain a grass fire that burned very close to homes in gilroy, yesterday. this had is near the college not far from castro valley road. flames made homeowners very nervous. as of last night the fire burned 150 acres and it was reported at 50% containment. those are the latest figures we have. we are still awaiting the first update of the morning. breaking overnight the taliban is claiming responsibility for a horrific attack in kabul. dozens are injured after a you suicide car bombing. the early morning attack targeted a bus carrying employees of the administration.

all of the dead are civilians. a developing story at 5:35. federal prosecutors are expected to charge the driver of a truck they say was packed with migrant workers. dozens more people were found inside of that packed truck who are still in the hospital this morning. authorities yesterday discovered an 18-wheeler outside of a walmart in san antonio, texas, where temperatures in san antonio exceeded 100 degrees this weekend. authorities say those temperatures combined with the truck's airtight doors effectively turned the trailer into an oven. it's already being the tragic case of trafficking that has residents there appalled. >> devastating. it's horrible. i can't believe that some people could even do that to human people. >> federal agents say that most of the victims this are in their 20s and 30s from mexico and guatemala. authorities are still trying to track down some of the survivors who fled the scene. >> palo alto law that limits

>> lots of homes destroyed. we should say nobody, thankfully, has been injured or killed. 76,000 have been burned, 63 homes have been destroyed. officials say it could take another two weeks to control the fire. we continue to track the progress of firefighters across the state right now. this summer is proving to be destructive when it comes to wildfires this is a look at the agency's fire incident page which shows the massive amount of flames still burning up and down gold state. thousands of acres have burned so far this year and the summer clearly not even close to being over. marin transportation leaders are reportedly prepping to take their most comprehensive look at traffic patterns in year. the ij reports a new survey will be done this fall to pinpoint areas in need of the most attention. surveyors will focus specifically on the interchanges connecting highway 101, 37, and 580. as cal train rolls forward with its electrification transformation it's getting its new line of train cars and today

you can help pick out seats for those cars. this afternoon at 4:30 at the king street station in san francisco. once those tracks are electrified cal train will replace 75% of its fleet with electric trains. the rest will remain diesel. the eventual goal is to it fully convert everything to electric. laura, it is a promising sign in the fight against hiv and here is the very latest. a remarkable story. a south african girl who was born with hiv has kept her infection suppressed for more than eight years after she stopped taking anti-hiv meds, that cocktail of drugs. the girl is now the third case where a child developed a long-lasting remission without use of medication. doctors say this is evidence that early treatment can essentially function as a form of cure. the girl's case is being discussed at a conference in paris today. also today jared kushner will face the senate intelligence committee.

>> we'll get through it together. >> such a great weekend, hopefully people are trying to keep the good vibes going. >> and the weather is on the good vibe wavelength as we start out this morning and we are going to have some cooler temperatures. we're all excited about that because it is really been hot. as we go into the next couple of days it looks like that holds steady. our temperatures as you step out the door in the upper 50s. we're at 59 degrees in the tri-valley. 630 in the peninsula and on the left side of the screen look in at the east bay live in fremont it is 60 degrees right in the middle of low clouds over san fran san fran and it's 55 degrees. the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, you'll see we'll have a few days in the 80s and then before you though it we'll be back in the 90s. we are going to take a break today with some nice, refreshing breezes especially for the coast, and much of the inner bay. oakland will be up to 72 degrees while antioch will be at 87 degrees. as you take a look out the window this morning, another

great day for wearing a cute summer dress and some heels today, something nice and light that will keep cool as our temperatures will feel much more comfortable. if you are going hiking in the east bay, no heels. it'll be definitely the hiking shoes and some sneakers as we start out with mainly clear skies. at 7:00, 60 degrees. 72 degrees with a light breeze. it will be heating up for some of those hiking trails in the east bay. we'll be watching those temperature in the 80s. meantime in san francisco it's going to be in the low 60s at first pitch. that will be at 7:15. temperatures right at about 60 degrees. and with the clouds and fog, some drizzle, most likely at&t park, it's going to be a cool evening out there. and we'll see more weather like over the next several days but in the low 70s. still a nice weekend there. while the inland valleys are going to be heating up well above average, we've seen a lot of this this summer.

another weekend with highs in the mid to upper 90s. speaking of upper 90s, mike takes us to the tri-valley. that's where we'll feel that. >> that's where you know you can find them on the weekend apparently to the last few weeks and this coming weekend. the only slowing that shows the rest of the bay does show a very pleasant drive. of course the metering lights are on so you have a backup there. here you have slowing south 680 as the build kicks in. we just heard about a crash clearing to the right shoulder. you saw that change from yellow to orange. more slowing approaching highway 44 just around the area is where we hear about a crash clearing to the right shoulder. more volume coming in out of livermore and that will be an issue as it's right around where the crash is, again, just about highway 84 and the merge. we'll look at waze and see how that's shaping up to compare your drive to what you might be expecting as far as your routes go. a smooth flow of traffic. take the dub interchange or head through stanley or even holmes and that's a couple areas you want to go. you want to take this this dublin interchange with a slower

monday morning and taking a live look outside from our downtown camera in san francisco. you see just the wave of clouds there covering up the transamerica pyramid. we are expecting cooler weather across the bay today thanks to a stronger sea breeze. kari hall has your full forecast coming up in five minutes. 5:55. five children enjoying a day of fun on the lake all in the hospital after they were burned by boat fumes. it happened yesterday afternoon in the marina. investigators are calling it a fuel vapor flash. officials say a man had just finished putting fuel in his boat and then turned it on. that may have caused the gas fumes to ignite. michael bradley witness ed the aftermath. >> they look too good. their facial expressions looked like they were in pretty good pain. a lot of them being carried out by emts in their arms and most
