90s in the tri-valley and the delta and oakland today expecting a high of 72. 72 also in belmont. in san francisco low to mid-60s. while the north bay will see highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s. a nice start to the week. we'll talk about what's coming up. mike is checking on the san mateo bridge. >> we had a crash reported at the toll plaza that's westbound, that's your commute direction to the peninsula. a smooth flow of traffic, a good volume of traffic has increased a bit as that crash cleared at the toll plaza. folks making their way off 880 across the bridge in the direction we saw the taillights, an increase off 880 as traffic starts to build through that area as well as the tri-valley. this crash still in lanes, out of lanes at 84. we have a number of on the shoulder this is quite a distraction causing the focus of the commute to be a big issue. back to you. mike, thank you very much. we're closely tracking this breaking news out of the south

bay this morning learning about a hazmat situation going on right now with evacuations. >> we just got off the phone with the san jose fire department who tells firefighters at a hotel very close to bernal and monterey. we did our own looking and it appears the location is an extended stay america. >> right now there is no word at this point of any injuries or even what triggered those evacuations. we do have a crew headed to the scene right now. we hope to have an update later in our newscast. we continue to monitor other breaking news this morning out of the south bay. police blocking off part of san jose's santana row this morning after shots were fired early this morning. b"today in the bay's" bob redel joins us live from the scene. he's been there since 4:30 this morning. bob, you brought us live pictures of at least one person detained in our last half hour. i know it's been developing. anything new? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. san jose police detained two men who were in one of the condos in the southeast end of santana

row. they detained them and are interviewing them. this is what the scene looked like earlier this morning when they had a good section of the south end of santana row, this is an upscale retail and residential area if you're not familiar had the south end taped off, a lot of the area blocked off. they have since close the down that perimeter. around 12:45 this morning, reports of gunshots coming from one of the condo units here in santana row. when police arrived had they found that not only were there gunshots but one of the bullets from the unit traveled into a unit next door so the police department's first priority was to secure the scene and make sure that people were safe. >> we made some evacuations to make it safe. as soon as i made phone contact i was able to get the person to come out and then there was apparently another person inside and he also came out. >> what did they say to you on the phone? >> that he would come out, he was fine and he would come out. >> did he say, hey, i'm really sorry? >> i didn't question him about

the incident as much as just let him know we wanted to make sure he was okay and everybody was okay and asked him to please come out, which he did. >> reporter: and those two men who were in the condo not only came out but they have been detained and are being interviewed. police didn't indicate whether they found a weapon or a gun in the condo unit, but as far as the reason why this gun went off, why somebody might have fired it, they're still trying to figure that part out, again, no injuries. reporting live here in san jose at santana row, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest there, bob. autopsy results may not be made public for weeks in the death friday of actor john heard. he died in palo alto. he died in a hotel after he underwent back surgery at the stanford. he was known for lots of movies but perhaps his best known role the dad in "home alone." medical examiners conducted the autopsy. details will not be released

until toxicology results are complete. at 6:03 the search for a missing man in the north bay takes a tragic turn. crews found his body in the waters this weekend. we told you about 70-year-old charles friend who went by tod, disappearing from his boat in tomales bay. friend owned the tomales bay oyster company. someone post that had friend's body was found saturday and he was brought to shore surrounded by those who loved him. investigators believe friend was not wearing a life vest and fell off his boat. a public celebration of his life is being planned. community members are going to be meeting today with alameda county supervisors to talk about alternatives to expanding the local jail. a group called the decars rate alameda co-laalition has provid mental health workers to attend the meeting today. supporters believe attention needs to pivot from jail expansion to better mental health treatment. we will bring you updates from it as soon as we have it.

president trump's executive order allowing more oil and gas exploration and drilling, two protected marine sanctuaries could be affected by it. the marin ij reporting representative jerrod hoffman of san rafael and 20 other members of congress are asking the trump administration to extend the public comment period this order. the current comment period is slate d to end wednesday. lawmakers are asking to extend that by 30 or more days and they are urging the public to get involved. live to capitol hill this morning where a team meeting will be held today considering the investigation into russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. the president generals committee. of the afford care act. over the weekend vice president mike pence urged gop senators to take action. >> republican senators must step up to the plate after seven years and vote to repeal and replace obamacare. >> president trump tweeted the issue yesterday. he says if republicans do repeal and remrplace the disastrous obamacare the repercussions will be far greater than any of them understand. it is 6:08 now. after a hot weekend we have some fog back in the bay area. as we take a live look outside at anderson reservoir we can see the fog rolling across with some mostly clear skies overhead. we also see that as we take a live look outside in san jose and the temperature trend for santa clara will be in the mid-70s. your lunch time temperature 79 so you might want to take that outside. it'll be in the mid-80s for the high temperature today, and we'll see more weather like this over the next few days.

coming up in three minutes i'll have a look at today's temperature trend for fremont. but mike takes us now to the tri-valley. >> taking you back there, kari, because most of the bay shows a nice pleasant commute. we'll have the metering lights on. we have to remind you about that. we have this crash over on the shoulder now completely cleared of lanes but a distraction south 680 towards sunol right at the critical point where folks come off livermore for highway 84 as well so that's the focus of the commute now out of the tri-valley. it is not the dublin interchange but south 680 from there will be an issue as you head to fremont. to the bay bridge a smooth, easy drive for the travel times. no problem. again, the metering lights are on so you do have to wait. back to you. thank you very much, mike. up next on b"today in the bay," nine people have died, many others are in dire condition it this morning after they were found in the back of this sweltering tractor-trailer. the victims of an apparent human smuggling attempt. the phone call that tipped off police. plus, wall street back to work and a big win at the box

as we take a live look outside in fremont this morning we wake up with a nice breeze and a few clouds. we will be in the upper 60s and mid-by early afternoon. it's going to be a nice one. we'll take a look to some hotter temperatures ahead in five minutes.

>> some slower speeds. top of your screen south 680 slows through pleasanton. that crash still on the shoulder. checking out the san mateo bridge. >> federal charges expected to be filed against the driver of an 18 wh-wheeler that was packe with migrant workers. >> at least nine of them were killed and dozens of others including two school-aged children were hospitalized after being found packed inside a sweltering trailer outside of a walmart in san antonio, texas. joining us live outside the walmart to explain how police found the victims, good morning. >> reporter: federal investigators say the people crammed inside an 18-wheeler parked in this walmart parking lot are the victims of human smuggling.

some of of them are in their 20s and 30s. some tried to escape into the woods and calling on other people to come and get them from the area so they hitchhiked away from here. federal investigators say they plan on continuing the search for those victims. meantime the suspected driver is expected to stand before a judge on federal charges. as you mentioned eight people were found dead inside that truck. a ninth person died at the hospital. they were tipped off by a walmart employee who called 911 when someone climbed out and begged him for water. several of them are in critical condition. investigators say a number of those survivors are from guatemala and mexico. no word yet where they are headed in the u.s. or where

their journey may have begun. investigators hoping to find more people connected to this. the border patrol says within the last month they have made four. the latest victims are still fighting for their lives in the hospital. sarah rosario. sam and laura, back to you. >> i can't imagine what was going on inside there. >> it tears your heart apart to hear that. 6:15 on your monday morning. muni certain advice this morning is back to normal after testing that did force people to make adjustments. mun shut the light rail tunnel down from west portal to montgomery street so essentially spanning a good chunk of the city. to test out the new fleet of trains. muni hopes to debut the train by this fall.

that's going to be on weekends and after 9:30 on week nights. 6:15. palo alto has been upgrading parking garages and more are on the way. the city will unveil a charging station at the garage on bryant street at 2:00 p.m. pomona energy is installing panels on cambridge avenue. >> well, wall street could get a bit of a boost out of google this week. >> one of the many companies reporting profits this this week. >> lots to watch. google's parent alphabet will be reporting. alphabet has to pay a nearly $3 billion fine. silicon valley will be watching how it compensates it for that. 200 other companies report this week as well, wall street could start the week in the red. two-day are rate meeting tomorrow. president trump has been talking

driving your car around, prices at the pump are going up. the average price of regular unleaded rose a penny. research overnight and found that's about 10 cents above where it was a year ago. in observing the average slightly higher at $2.97 and the most expensive as always in san francisco with an average price of $3.07 a gallon. >> definitely that time of year people are taking road trips for their family. they come to the bay area. you have to love the weather here. this weekend a little hotter than normal. >> yes, it was. >> he has red mneck to prove it. >> a red neck and red nose to boot. >> that's why i tell you to wear the sun block. we're going to have more sunshine in the forecast and here is a look as we get a video

of the fog and the sun rise right above that. looking at the sun rise on all of the different cameras. a look from sunol. we also have those low clouds rolling by as we take a look for twin peaks. 55 degrees and mostly feeling upper families. our temperatures are a few degrees cooler than it was yesterday morning at this time. the high temperature at 83. oakland 72. we'll be at 78 degrees in napa. sam, i know you wish you had that for the weekend after spending time there. low 70s for much of the afternoon. we'll drop back into the 60s and napa valley's forecast for

today. once again in the upper 70s there with mostly sunny skies. it is going to be another warm day but at least you'll have those morning hours with some more comfortable temperatures. looking at san francisco's forecast for the next several days in in the mid-60s. for the next couple of days and then some low 70s for the weekend. and we get into the low 70s there, the inland valleys will be hitting the upper 90s. it's going to be another hot weekend. mike, now you have something reported on the san mateo bridge? >> kari, it wasn't reported. weed it. a set of flashing lights. i don't know if you can make it out. heading across the span. it's been a distraction. out to the, westbound dumbarton bridge.

man who couldn't get a company to help him out with a recall they issued. >> consumer investigator chris chmura is here with the story. >> reporter: shortly after tony pena moved in a new home one of his outdoor lights burned out. he started researching replacement bulbs and discovered the lights themselves had been recalled had in 2013 due to a shock hazard. as part of the recall consumers were due a free replacement. tony contacted the company but he says his calls went unanswered. so he contacted us. we called and it sent tony new light fixtures. in a statement the company said that strives to deliver the highest quality product and service in a timely manner to all of its customers. if you have a consumer complaint call us. chris, thank you so much. all paying big fines they

violated consumers rights. delta under reported baggage complaint and frontier bumps passengers off planes without asking for volunteers first. the airline did not acknowledge any doing but delta is paying a fine. american airlines $250,000. frontier is shelling out $400,000. 6:26 right now. coming up next on "today in the bay" a fire breaking out near a south bay college. the progress firefighters are making as they try to keep the flames away from homes and other buildings in the area. authorities are still looking for the suspects behind dozens of car burglaries spanning two cities in the east bay. what i was able to find out about the crime in one of those communities. you're watching "today in the bay." ♪

some drizzle for a little while. we'll see the same thing again tomorrow and then our temperatures start to trend into the upper 60s is for the inland areas. it will be in the mid-80s today. we'll see that again tomorrow and also on wednesday but then after that all bets are off. it's going to be hot again reaching into the mid to upper 90s. we'll talk about what's ahead for the week, what places you may be heading to escape the heat coming up in seven minutes. mike takes us back to the san mateo bridge. >> i had just seen -- still flashing lights. again, the flat section moving a little more smoothly over the last couple of minutes but a crash earlier. it still is a distraction so slowing westbound. show you on the maps what that means as far as your travel times building up and coming over from the east bay about 20 minutes across the san mateo bridge it's lighter all around the bay. great stuff just starting with the build for the south bay and the east bay a little bit of recovery south 680 had cleared

the earlier crash. a little bit better now. back to you. >> that is good to hear, mike. 6:30 right now on your monday and all new this morning word of a death investigation in the east bay. the east bay regional park police say that officers there found a body yesterday in what they are calling a remote part of chabot park. it's a man they found. we are trying to find out more information right now. investigators don't know the victim's identity and they have not indicated whether or not they are looking into foul play. firefighters still hard at work trying to fully contain a grass fire that burned close to homes in gilroy yesterday. this is near the college not far from castro valley road. made some homeowners very nervous but evacuations were never ordered. as of last night the fire burned 150 acres and was reported to be at 50% containment. we're still awaiting the first update of the morning. breaking overnight a possible tornado has damaged

several homes on maryland's eastern shore. we are taking in these images, sections of a house there that was ripped apart. you see all of the debris on the back of the lawn. this is happening in queen anne's county about 50 miles east of washington, d.c. at this point there is still no confirmation whether or not it was, in fact, a twister. we do know that a violent system pounded that mid-atlantic region causing trees to go down and power outages as well. so far no reports of any major injuries. breaking news we're following in san jose, a hotel evacuated as crews investigate a hazmat situation. it happened at the extended stay close to monterey on san ignacio. >> bob redell just got to the scene. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, sam and laura. as you can see behind me the fire is still at the extended stay america. they have some yellow tape out in front. you can see the guests have been

evacuated. what happened is according to the fire department they just figured this out, explained to us someone sprayed pepper spray on the inside of the lobby on the door and that's why you had this report of a hazmat, someone saying a strong smell. the fire department evacuated the first floor of the hotel, about 29 people, and they sheltered in place the other two floors. so they figured out that it was pepper spray. they have secured the scene. now it's just a matter of having some private company come in to clean that pepper spray off the door so it doesn't get in people's eyes and cause problems. they had to assess one person, but that person is okay. that person was in the lobby who reported it. it's not clear why this pepper spray was released on the door and who released the pepper spray but the fact of the matter is you still have the downstairs evacuated area. no injuries, just a matter of why was this pepper spray released.

bob redell, "today in the bay." showing car break-ins, both brentwood and livermore police are working together to try to find the people who damaged dozens of cars. >> pete suratos is joining us live with some of the clues in these cases, pete, and we know you did some digging overnight to learn about the sort of crimes happening in the area. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, sam and laura, and the latest crime incident taking place behind me here at the hampton inn in brentwood friday morning where "the san jose mercury news" reports they stole a white lexus. livermore police tell us the suspects carried out lar crimes in livermore not the too long after. i was going to show you a map of where the crime spree started and ended. it started where we're standing here at the hampton inn in brentwood and you see the suspects drove about 30 minutes south to livermore and hawk

street. surveillance cameras show the suspects canvassing the area, eventually breaking into several cars. this took place on the same day when multiple homes were targeted by vandals with eggs, m-80s and other projectiles. on the police website it showed so far 29 car burglaries and 48 reports of vandalism. back to the car burglary investigation police say they are still looking for three to four suspects responsible for the car robberies and we still don't have a description of those suspect. if you have any information contact livermore or brentwood police. we're live in brentwood, pete suratos for "today in the bay." okay, pete, thank you very much. at 6:35, the taliban claiming responsibility for a horrific attack in kabul in afghanistan. at least 24 people are dead. dozens others injured after a suicide car bombing. the early morning attack targeted a bus carrying

employees of the mines and petroleum ministry. authorities say all the dead and wounded are civilians. >> right now, laura, police in milpitas are looking for a man who exposed himself to minors. he exposed himself thursday afternoon where there were young kids present. they also say two minors meant to take this photo of the man before he left the scene. take a good look there. police cleared the image first published in an online article. in the same report the department rarely receives calls of indecent exposure. we did our own digging on this and crimereports.com showed 20 were reported in mill pitas ove the last three months. tracking tool does not indicate how many if any were indecent expo exposure. at 6:36 trying to find out what caused a small plane to make an emergency landing in san jose over the weekend. investigators say the plane tilted while landing and one was

its wings hit the ground making the plane go off the runway yesterday. the pilot was injured but is expected to be okay. we asked investigators what caused the crash landing and we're still told they're looking into it. a palo alto law that limits office development might get renewed by the city council. it limit yearly development to 50,000 square feet in what is precious real estate there in downtown palo alto. two downtown areas. once development goes over that limit, the city council judges the future projects based on community impact. >> as cal train rolls forward with its transformation it's getting together a new line of train cars. today you can help pick out the seats that they're going to use for the cars. it's happening this afternoon at 4:30 at the king street station in san francisco. once those tracks are electrified they will replace 75% of its fleet with electric trains. the rest will remain diesel.

the eventual goal is to fully convert everything to electric. there's a big soccer matchup coming to levi stadium and vta is putting out extra service to carry all those crowds. extra buses and light rails will be rolling wednesday for the gold cup finals. the u.s. team going up against jamaica for the first place. the match is expect ed to draw 50,000 to 60,000 fans. the 49ers agreed to cover the tab for that extended service. >> it doesn't take me to tell you there might be delays. right now af easy drive throughout the south bay and the peninsula. the issue of getting there i'll talk about in just a second. we have south 280 recovering, a distraction at highway 84. some folks decided to try to get away from that and the slower drive through the tri-valley. a build to the castro valley. not a major concern except just west of this the san ma teo

in law jared kushner, also his top adviser, would be meeting with the senate intelligence committee to talk about what he knows. now this is going to be in private and apparently not under oath. just a few moments ago the president tweeted so why aren't the committees and the investigators and of course our beleaguered ag looking into crooked hillary's crimes and russia relations. i know you caught that, the part about the attorney general. our beleaguered ag talking about jeff sessions. trump's first supporters in the senate was jeff sessions, he was the man trump appointed to be ag and now apparently he's beleaguered. also, the president of the united states is directing the justice department to investigate his political opponent. that is historic this morning. kushner released a text of his opening statement to the committee. he will say i did not collude nor know of anyone else in the campaign who colluded with any foreign government.

and as we get a look at our high temperatures this afternoon in the low 80s for santa rosa. napa, 78 degrees. concord up to 86 degrees. palo alto, 79. and san jose will see a high of 83 degrees. and the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen. san francisco is not looking bad at all as we go through this week as you're standing in the closet getting ready for the day another nice day for a light summer dress, something to help keep you cool and the heels, you'll be able to rock those today with some nice, dry weather. as we look at the hiking trail forecast for the east bay, of course you won't be wearing heels and a summer dress here but it will be a very warm as those temperatures heat up into the upper 80s by this afternoon and then once those gusty winds kick in our temperatures drop back into the upper 70s. i want to show you what it looks like in heavenly right now just because as the sun rises we can see there are some clouds building up there overhead. if you or someone you know that

in the bay... . sam//chopper breaking news this morning out of san jose. welcome back on this monday morning. the top stories we're covering on "today in the bay." >> south bay, breaking news this morning in san jose. we are learning that an entire hotel was evacuated because of pepper spray. that is according to the san jose fire department. we first brought you breaking news on it this story earlier at 6:30. a live look right now. the extended stay hotel off of st. ignacio near monterey. the department says that about 60 people place at the moment while crews work to clear the hotel. the situation has been declared under control. developing this morning fire fighters still hard at work trying to fully contain a grass fire that burned close to homes yesterday in gilroy. this is near the college not fire from castro valley road. flames yesterday made some homeowners understandably nervous but evacuations were never ordered.
