victory. >> we can't wait for that. we start with politics. a lot going on with the russia investigation. all-eyes on the president's son-in-law and senior adviser jared kushner. we now know what he will tell lawmakers on capitol hill today. we're learning more about the sudden and abrupt departure of white house press secretary sean spicer. we have all of it covered. we're going to talk to the president's former campaign manager in a moment. let's begin with nbc white house correspondent, kristen welker. kristen, good morning to you. >> reporter: hi, savannah, good morning to you. president trump will try to put the focus on his domestic agenda today, delivering a speech about health care this afternoon. but it is his son-in-law who is in the hot seat, jared kushner, who was captured just moments ago arriving on capitol hill, is expected to deliver a strongly-warded statement to senate intelligence committee staffers today, insisting he didn't collude with the russians. this morning, jared kushner, in his own words. as the president's son-in-law gets set to face tough questions from staff members with the senate intelligence committee. nbc news has obtained his

statement to congress. kushner says directly "i did not collude nor know of anyone else in the campaign who included with any foreign government. i had no improper contacts. i have not relied on russian funds to finance my business activities in the private sector." in the 11-stage statement kushner addresses two encounters that have become flash points, one with the russian am babassa and the other with a russian attorney. he said in april 2016, he met the russian ambassador. the encounter so brief, the day after election day, he had to ask, what is the name of the russian ambassador. and that trump tower meeting with a russian attorney in 2016, june, kusher er ier i er ier i received an email from donald trump jr., asking for a meeting with no other attendees listed. and he didn't read the e-mail chain forwarded to him. but after arriving late, he found the russian attorney discussing adoptions.

and determined it was a waste of our time. after about ten minutes, he e-mailed his assistant from the meeting asking, "can you please call me on my cell? need excuse to get out of meeting." his meeting is behind closed doors today and he won't be under oath. the russian investigation, top of mind for the president. he tweeted on saturday, all agree the u.s. president has the complete power to pardon, why think of that when the only crimes so far is leaks against us. mr. trump's personal attorney and top aides dismissing the idea. >> pardons have not been discussed. and pardons are not on the table. >> why are we talking -- there's nothing to pardon. there's no one to pardon. why are we talking about presidential pardons when there's no presidential crime. >> reporter: but a different message from anthony scaramucci, the president's new communications director. >> i'm in the oval office with the president last week, we're talking about that. he brought that up. he doesn't have to be pardoned. >> reporter: as for kushner, he's also expected to address reports that he tried to set up secret communications

with the kremlin. saying "i do not suggest a secret back channel." those additions to his security clearance form, kushner says it was mistakenly submitted prematurely by his assistant who left out all foreign aforbes, not just those from russia. congress has struck a bipartisan deal to impose sweeping sanctions on russia for its election meddling. and limiting president trump's power to. the white house was opposed to the bill. over the weekend, the top aides sent conflicting signals whether trump will support the legislation. savannah? >> we'll see if we can get clarity on that. kristen, thank you. let's focus in on the dramatic shakeup of the communications operation. how it will change the message coming out of the white house and what's been a rocky relation nbc's chief white house correspondent hallie jackson has that part of the story. hallie, good morning. >> hey, carson, good morning to you. that new communications director who is making a move from wall street to washington, is coming out strong against his own staff. warning he will not tolerate

leaks. ant scaramucci tells me while the communications team is not working as well as it could be, he'd like to keep everyone on but says if he has to get rid of everyone but his secretary, sarah huckabee sanders, he will, if he cannot get the leaks to stop. the man now in charge of the west wing message, delivering a very clear one for his own team. >> tomorrow, i'm going to have a meeting with the communications staff and say, i don't like the leaks. so, we're going to stop the leaks. if we don't stop the leaks, i'm going to stop you. it's really that simple. >> reporter: president trump's new communications director, starting the work week with a warning, a crackdown from anthony scaramucci and a teardown on twitter, deleting all his old tweets, including ones that opposed some of the president's positions on things like gun control, border walls and climate change, announcing it all with a message, "full transparency," he writes. "past views evolved and

shouldn't be a distraction." >> when i made the decision to take this job, my politics and my political ideas do not matter at all. what matters is that i'm subordinating all of that to the president's agenda. >> reporter: scaramucci seeming to relish his new role, pushing the president's message on tv, but absent from the air waves, sean spicer, who plans to officially walk out of the white house sometime in august. >> i think i have a pretty good compass. i made a decision, in the best interest, not just myself, for the president and for this administration. was to step aside and let anthony and sarah lead the team. >> reporter: sarah huckabee sanders now the incoming press secretary, just the third woman to hold that role, though this direction from her new boss had some scratching their heads. >> the only thing i ask sarah, if you're watching, i love the hair and makeup person that we had on friday so i'd like to continue to use the hair and makeup person. >> reporter: scaramucci responding to that dust-up on twitter writing "for the record,

i was referring to my hair and makeup and the fact that i like the makeup artist. i need all the help i can get. #humor." scaramucci says he will do some tv if he wants. but sanders will be handling the podium regularly at the briefings. telling me, he is not a ball hog. carson, savannah, back to you. >> got it. hallie, thanks so much. >> we need all the help we can get in that department. corey lewandowski served as one of president trump's campaign managers. he joins us now. good morning. and my question to you is, apparently jared kushner is going to say, i got pulled in late. i got out as fast as i could. does this come back to donald trump jr.? was it a mistake for him to not only schedule that meeting but to bring others into it and put them in that position? >> i think what jared is talking about, if you looked at his

calendar and what his memory now is, the meeting he was asked to attend was at the request of his brother-in-law. it was not uncommon for him to pop in and out of meetings. there's no indication of who that meeting was with or what it was about. >> that's why i'm asking about donald trump jr. is he kind of the original actor here? was that a mistake of him to do that? >> clearly donald trump jr. is the one who initiated the meeting and is the one who brought the other individuals into the meeting. i think in hindsight, if you were to go back and look, he probably wouldn't have done it the same way. i think he said that very publicly. but the notion these meetings don't occur, across campaigns all the time, when individuals are trying to get opposition research on their opponents is a fallacy. >> but from a foreign government, adversarial government, you were a campaign manager. would you have taken that meeting? be honest. would you have? >> i was obviously the campaign manager at the time. i did not participate in that meeting. and what i can tell you is that if i thought it was a meeting that would have been relevant to the outcome of the campaign, i potentially would have been there, but it was not something that i thought was relevant, and

look, i don't know the individuals that were involved. it was a friend who asked donald trump jr. to take the meeting. he took it as a courtesy. and looking back on it i think donald trump, jr., would tell you that it probably wasn't the right thing to do. but nothing came of the meeting. >> the senate passed overwhelmingly tougher sanctions on russia. we have a now white house communications director who is casting suspense on what the president might do. do you think he will sign it? >> i haven't talked to anyone in the administration what the president is going to do on that piece of legislation but let's be very clear. the president has said that if there's an opportunity to work with russia, and eradicate isis in syria, that's a good thing for us, and for our country. if we're adversaries and we can't work with russia because they're punitive against us, the president will be tough on russia. if we have to put sanctions in place, this president has been very, very clear. his priority is america first. that hasn't changed from the day he was elected. un

do you have any information about that? >> i have been public in my criticism of the administration and the leaks that come out of it. what we've seen over the weekend is that anthony scaramucci, the new communications director said he will find the leaks. he will eradicate those leaks. if that means that individuals who are working inside that building are fired because they're not on the president's agenda, i think that's the right thing to do. if you're working in that administration, the guy that opens the door or the chief of staff, if you're not on the president's agenda, you shouldn't be there. i have full confidence that anthony scaramucci is going to go inside that building, find who those leaks are and get rid of them. that's what the president deserves and what the american people deserve. >> are you going to take a job in the administration? >> i haven't been offered a job in the administration. i like being on the outside so i can come on your show without any problems. >> are you still advising the president, corey? >> i have been a steadfast supporter of the administration. any time if i have the privilege

of receiving a phone call from members of the team or the president, i will take that call and give them my best advice. >> that sounds like a yes. thank you very much. >> our nicolle wallace is the host of msnbc's "deadline white house." nicolle, good morning. >> what do you make of the shakeup in the communications team? and there are a lot of rumors that was the first shoe to drop and there may be other big resignations. >> it's the president's prerogative to hire and fire whomever he wants. this is someone who communicates more consistently with the way the president sees himself communicating. he's a street fighter. the president has made no secret to friends and confidants that he has been dissatisfied with the lack of aggression in terms of fighting back about stories with russia, claiming they are a hoax. anthony scaramucci said the russia investigation is a hoax. he has someone in line of the thinking of these things. >> you hear corey say there

about scaramucci wanting to crack down on the leaks. i saw him yesterday saying he wants to change the culture. inside the communications division of the white house. how does he go about that? >> i'm guessing you don't really boost morale by saying you're going to fire everybody. and anyone that covers this white house, knows it's not difficult to get folks on the phones at the high e levels of this white house to talk about what's going on, to talk about one another. and one of the most stalwart defenders of the president said the addition of scaramucci is one more person, you know, in the swirl. and what the real problem is in this white house, they don't have a functioning chain of command as a staff. they don't have a powerful chief of staff that keeps everybody out of everybody else's lane. the chaos is largely a product of a weak chief of staff. this was a decision he lobbied against. he opposed with all of his might. and the president made it anyway. you talk about other shoes to drop, i think all eyes are on steve bannon and reince priebus

who were publicly against the move to hire scaramucci. >> chief of staff and his senior staff, nicole, appreciate it. a lot more happening this morning. and federal charges are expected against the driver of a tractor-trailer, involved in a deadly and disturbing case of human smuggling in texas. dozens of undocumented immigrants were found inside the back of a sweltering 18-wheeler. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in san antonio for us with the latest on this. gabe, good morning. e conditioning. the suspected driver of that tractor-trailer is expected to be formally charged later today. this morning, federal investigators are trying to unravel how a human smuggling operation inside this tractor-trailer turned deadly. >> something out of the movies. you don't expect to see that kind of thing around here. >> reporter: the gruesome scene, sweltering walmart parking lot in san antonio.

temperatures reached 101 degrees there on saturday. someone climbed out of the back of the tractor-trailer parked near the store and begged for water. a walmart employee called 911. police found 39 suspected undocumented immigrants found inside. eight were dead. another died at the hospital. >> they were very hot to the touch so these people were in the trailer without any type of water. >> reporter: investigators say the suspected driver, 60-year-old james bradley jr. out of clearwater, florida, will be formally charged later today. some blame the political climate. >> the harsh rhetoric is what is responsible for tragedies like what happened in san antonio. >> reporter: but human trafficking has been big business for decades. it's reminiscent of a 2003 case in victoria, texas, when 70 people were trapped in a semitruck. 19 died. last year, homeland security officials investigated 2,000 cases of human trafficking,

making 3,000 arrests. >> it's a broken immigration system that congress has refused to fix. >> these deaths are preventable. >> reporter: late sunday, a vigil for the victims. >> they're willing to risk themselves and willing to risk their lives for their kids and for their family members so they can have a better future. >> reporter: 30 undocumented immigrants remain in the hospital, 17 in critical condition as the immigration debate rages in this country. what happened in this parking lot is a haunting reminder of what's at stake. savannah? >> just awful. gabe gutierrez, thank you very much. now, back to the dramatic finish at the open championship. golf's third major of the year, jordan spieth overcame what looked like a meltdown in the making to claim the coveted clarett jug. win that puts him amongst the greatest to ever play the game. >> champion golfer of the year, right there. >> call him the comeback kid. 23-year-old jordan spieth, the

diagnosis, arizona senator john mccain spent his day relaxes outdoors. he spent a day with a friend, enjoying zebra falls. he went on a hike with his daughter. senator mccain has vowed to return to capitol hill soon. look at this video. it shows a starbucks customer stopping a robbery. a guy with a transformer mask threatened a clerk with a gun that was fake and a knife. that's when the customer hit the guy behind. jerry was stabbed in the neck and stabbed the suspect several times. jerry was treated for his injuries and is expected to make a full recovery. >> that's incredible. the whole thing, right there on camera. also this morning, new developments to tell you about in that controversial police shooting of an australian bride-to-be in minneapolis. a new witness is emerging as he fiance speaks out about the moments that led to this tragedy. ron mott is in minneapolis for

us. he has the latest on all of it. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. state officials say they have interviewed and identified the bicyclist who was near the alleywalle alleyway where justine damond was shot and killed. on friday, the police chief resigned under pressure. and now, very loud calls for the mayor to be the next to go. this morning, new details about justin damond's final moments. in an interview with "the new york times," her fiance said he told her to call 911, after hearing what the she thought was an assault behind their home. ious justine was alone. why didn't i stay on the phone with her? minutes after they spoke, investigators say justine was shot dead by minneapolis police officer mohammed noor as she approached the squad car. >> one done. ems is coming. rescue is coming.

>> reporter: around 11:12 p.m. we can't give a passtiositive i. we think it's justine. there's new scrutiny surrounding officer noor's training. in 2013, he graduated from an axccelerated path. >> this officer completed that training, very well. he was very suited to be on the street. >> reporter: while she initially stood by the training program, the police chief submitted her resignation on friday, after betsy hodges says she lost confidence on the chief's handling of the incident. at a late-night press conference friday, protesters unleashed a deafening call for the mayor's resignation. shouting bye-bye, betty, as hodges was escorted out. a story online shows what looks to be an official-looking street sign that reads, warning, twin

facing what could be tough questions on capitol hill today, about his meetings with russians. we're going to get more from white house correspondent, kristen welker. good morning. >> reporter: hi, savannah. good morning to you. his meeting with senate intelligence committee staffers today, jared kushner is expected to say in strong terms that he didn't collude with the russians and he has nothing to hide. in an 11-page statement, kushner will detail four meetings with russian officials and say that nothing improper happened at any of those encounters. he'll talk about two scrutinized meetings. one with the russian ambassador and one with the attorney. in the first one, kushner expected to say in a 2015, he briefly met the russian ambassador with a campaign event. the encounter so quick, the day after election day, he had to ask, what is the name of the russian ambassador? and the second one, the trump tower meeting with the russian attorney in june of 2016. kushner expected to say he received an e-mail from his

brother-in-law, donald trump jr. asking him for a meeting with no other attendees listed. at the time, he'll say he didn't read the long e-mail chain forwarded to him. but after arriving late at the meeting, kushner will say he found the attorney discussing adoptions and determined it was a waste of his time. and after ten minutes, he e-mailed his assistant saying, can you call me on my cell, need excuse to get out of meeting. kushner's meeting is behind closed doors and he won't be under oath. savannah? >> all right, kristen welker, thank you. a truck driver is facing charges after a suspected human smuggling operation left nine people dead. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in san antonio, texas, where others were rescued from inside a sweltering tractor-trailer. >> reporter: breaking news within the last few months. authorities say a tenth person has died. it was a horrifying discovery. police finding dozens of suspected migrants inside a tractor-trailer, in the stifling texas heat, with no air conditioning.

and just moments ago, the suspected driver, james bradley jr., was led into federal court. we expect him to be formally charged within the hour. investigators are trying to determine how the smuggling death turned deadly. the temperatures were at 101 degrees on saturday, when somebody climbed out of that tractor-trailer, begging for water. a walmart employee called 911. that's when police arrived and found a gruesome scene. eight people have died since -- were found dead in the truck. since then, two others have died. 30 people were rushed to the hospital. and more than a dozen remain in critical condition. carsen? >> just a horrific scene there in san antonio, texas. gabe, thank you. police are searching for a suspect in a bizarre attack this morning. a man with a chain saw entered an office building and injured two people. police does not believe that incident has any connection to terrorism.

breaking overnight, a dramatic rescue in arizona after 17 hikers came trapped in a flash flood. it happened 25 miles east of rescuers used a hospital to pull the hikers off of the rocks. others walked out after the water subsided. thankfully no one was injured. you're going to love this story. two-time olympic high jumper jamie nieto had the greatest performance in a church. he suffered a spinal injury doing a back flip. during rehab, he worked on one single goal, learning to take 130 steps. and on saturday, he reached it, walking his new bride down the aisle after their wedding ceremony. 130 steps. it was a monumental day. he needed to do a monumental thing. >> i have chills. >> amazing. there's a lot more to get to this morning, including an inside look at the new princess diana documentary from the filmmakers themselves.

them about, was it possible to make another film? we met the princes earlier this year and began to talk about, yeah, making a film about diana. >> you probably had expectations how open you thought they would be and you were sitting in the room during the interviews. did they surpass your expectations? >> it's obviously very difficult, private and personal. once they decided they wanted to make the film to honor their mum, they were incredibly candid. >> nick, we really see a side of diana through her sons' eyes. they talk about her laugh. how she was so exude be love, and we really see images that have never before been seen. >> i think this film is obviously a very personal film for the princes, but in ways it's a universal film, because it's asking, how do you keep alive the memory of someone you've loved and lost? prince harry says you dou that not just looking at family photographs but the way you live

your own life. they're very much carrying on their mothered unfinished business with the charity wok they do and in the way prince william looks to bring up his children. in the back of our minds when we were making this film, the thought, when it was finished we hoped william and harry would feel this is a film they could show their kids and say this is who your grandmother was. >> harry pointed out oh only cried twice since diana died. he saw an outpouring of thousands weeping and he felt sort of strange, like, these people are weeping more than i am. describe this? >> it's a unique experience. isn't it? isn't who worked the funeral, can they dough with a private grief that has to be publicly shared? the film sort of answers that question. the last 20 years had to keep things under wraps and now can finally talk about it for the first time. >> were you surprised by anything you heard about princess diana from her sons, aspect to her personality you didn't expect?

>> the thing that surprised me, a great practical joker. a real sense of humohumor. >> send racy cards to her son away at school. >> and the supermodels, for her eldest son. >> i hadn't heard them talk about before the divorce. what it felt like lives not enough with your mother and not enough with your father. i'd never heard that discuss that. >> they talk about being bounced around? don't they? too much time in cars and on the phone. you can tell it was obviously quite a difficult time for them. >> and i think anyone who's been through that experience of their parents being divorced would empathize with that. that's a very common experience. >> were they more candid than you expected, ashley? in a sense, did you hear more from them than you expected to? >> i thought they were incredibly courageous. it's a complex talking to the world about a mum who died in the circumstances in which she died. i was very touched by the courage and openness with which they sort of talked to us and

>> we're back with "today food." and two women who are heating up on the food scene. head chefs at king, which is hot here in new york. originally from london. but they brought their techniques they learn aid cross the pond here to the states. we're starting with chicken. let's go through the ingredients. >> it's a celebration of summer. we're cooking chicken ala provenn cal. >> we are using tomatoes. you can use tin tomatoes. basal, olives and capers. >> if you have tomatoes and basal, can you use them, too. >> yes. >> the chicken here is smushed. what is this called? >> this is chicken we have taken off of the bone. it's half a bird. you can use a whole bird and smush it. that's spach cocking.

>> the beutjutchbutchers will d you at the market. you're salting that up like it's fish. >> lots of salt and pepper. we pulled this bird out of the fridge for about 20 minutes. >> did you brine it? do you recommend that? >> you can. but this is just as good. a really hot pan. you want to make sure it's smoking hot. that's where you're going to get that crispy skin. >> olive oil? >> you can use veg if you prefer. but olive oil is fine. >> you want to hear that. >> it's going to be hot because it's going to start to get crispy and caramelize. >> you want skinside down. now, what are you going to. >> this is a skillet we're going to put on top to weight it down. >> to horforce the issue. what can you use other than a

skill skillet? >> absolutely anything. >> whatever you have got. >> bricks or whatever. >> that's going to go for a little bit. meanwhile -- >> this is where you've got the skillet on top. you get that lovely, crisp skin. this has been going for a while. >> how long skinside down before you flip it? >> until it smells like wonderful, crisp chicken skin. five minutes, maybe. >> flip it over? >> and flip it over. you have sliced garlic. it goes in. and other than that, anything can go in at any given point. you have the capers that have been rinsed of the salt. lovely olives that have been pitted. black, green, whatever you have at home. >> you cook this at king? >> we do it with a guinea hen. it's slightly different. but all variations on the theme. >> dump it in there? >> these are cherry tomatoes. seeded. no seeds in there. >> you're not cooking there.

>> they sell them there? >> no. you cut them in half and squeeze them out. >> why do you want the seeds out? >> they get stuck in your teeth. >> americans don't think of that thing. >> you have to leave something in there. how long do you marinate that for? >> it starts to smell like a holiday or a vacation. >> when they become friends and got to know each other, which this one has. >> what are you adding? >> i threw in some white wine. >> i was hoping you were going to say that. >> i get this out in a minute. >> you serve the whole thing to one portion? >> i like this one will do -- i mean, half a bird is enough for two people. or even a light lunch for three. this is nice and juicy. nice and crispy. >> our team downstairs. how is it, guys? >> so good. >> very good. >> very flavorful. >> i like the tomatoes.

and the basil. >> you portion that up. that's cooked perfectly. >> yeah. >> i can never do that at home when i get it at your restaurant. >> it's easier without the bone in it. >> absolutely. >> and rest it. >> what are you serving with this? a potatoes. about a minute? >> yes. >> these are potatoes in a bag. really quick and simple. one of my mom's go-to s recipes. potatoes, wayne, thyme. you can use carrots, beats, whatever. we're going to chuck everything in the bag. salt. >> a lot of seasoning. more than you think. >> loads of oil. >> you can whack a whole head of rosemary in. >> you put it in here and put it in the potato pidiaper. >> wash your hands before and after you do this. >> and this is a massive piece of tinfoil or aluminum foil.

greatest parts are when small towns -- smaller than cleveland, rally around some of the participants on the show. that love just is such a great part of the show. >> it is. you see them, like the big show coming to the smaller town. cleveland, they have their own rock star, lebron james. and this year, we have lebron james and his entire family come out to the course because they wanted to see it. and lebron james' son, a 12-year-old, rocked the course. and you can tell, during the finals, lebron was -- >> easy. >> lebron put it on his instagram. >> yeah. >> he's got some good genes, right? >> unfair. >> what i like about it, there's competitors. obviously, a competition. but everyone roots for each other. >> the camaraderie has been unbelievable. and you see the support, they get better together. when we came out here, one of the ninjas can get through one of the two obstacles. now, they have all found a way. >> the ninjas, the competitors,

saying stuff to them. >> like al roker telling us what a great job we're doing. >> you mentioned, these -- some of them are user-generated. people at home say, i have an idea. >> this is the sky hook. this was designed by a 7-year-old fan. wrote it out on crayon. and it was in san antonio. >> we put it out last season and said, we're going to showcase it this year. we did that. and people came out with crazy obstacles. >> what are the other new obstacles? >> 20 new obstacles. we have another one here, the spin ball wizard. the handles that go around. it's been insane, some of the obstacles. we had crank it up. >> someone is crazy enough to try. >> i had to try it. you have seen the epic ones, the iconic ones, like the warp wall. this was intriguing me. the athlete says, i have to do it. 160 pounds and physics says think again. i felt it.

reported this morning that was making guests comfortable. it was an extended stay hotel and it was evacuated. firefighters have not pinpointed the source of the pupper spray, but the source is under control. folks in gold country are allowed home now that the detweiler fire is about 50% contained. firefighters say it could take another two weeks to fully contain that fire. we'll provide you with updates once we have them. we'll have your traffic and weather in one minute.

premature death. and the message is, if you gain or lose up to five pounds, a couple of pounds over the two decades, it's within a range that's probably not going to have health impact on you. but more than that, and you will start to see the consequences. >> five to ten pounds, which seems like nothing. >> it seems like nothing. >> the advice is get out, exercise, eat healthy. >> and people that maintain their weight, what they were in the early 20s, had healthier ages. >> let's talk about the length between sleep and alzheimer's. >> this is important. this is a distinction. we talk about this on morning shows. it's not so much -- the study wasn't looking at the duration of sleep. but the impact, if you have sleep disorder breathing. in this study, they specifically were looking at people who had multiple episodes, where they were stopping breathing up to 50 or 60 times a night. and how that affected their risk

for alzheimer's. those plaques in the brain, they showed an association between the people who had the worst scores on breathing had the higher amount of plaques in their grain. and that was independent of genetics and if they showed mild cognitive empowerment or not. if you think you're at risk factor for obstructed sleep apnea, please, get es tested. the c-pat machines can make a difference. >> the final one is for all of the moms. we're talking about -- >> my twins have peanut allergies. >> food allergies. >> six months ago, or something, the american academy of pediatrics that rather than withholding peanuts, actually, they should be introduced.
