74, palo alto 87 and san jose reaching 88 degrees. we'll talk about what's ahead this weekend as welcoming up in a few minutes, but, mike, you're hearing bay bart delay. that's right. we talked about the future of bart, i'm talk about the present ever bart which is froefrg a ten-minute delay out of oakland heading to sfo. we did have some earlier mechanical issues, very short lived and not a problem now but, no, the first few trains over that area the first few minutes might be a minor delay. the roadways are looking well. we're look at a crash over on the shoulder for southbound 880. this one may still have part of that slowing blocked but we don't see the slowing we expect to siem going to say probably better news. i'll track that. send it back to you. thank you, mike. 6:01. happening today, all eyes will be on the ohio state fair as investigators try to figure out what caused the to fire ball right to break apart killing a person. video of that accident has been widely circulated on social media. we've frozen it before it gets to graphic. >> here is where that situation

stands at this hour. one man has been killed, seven others are injured and being treated right now. investigators say that ride had passed all of its inspections, in fact, inspectors had signed off on the ride on the same day as the accident. ohio governor john kasich ordered that all of the rides that the fair be shut down until there can be more inspections. and this morning this accident in ohio is having impact on rides right here in northern california. >> reez that it. there was a location connection here bob is joining us live from the santa cruz boardwalk. they've got a fire ball right in santa cruz so what are they doing to keep people safe. >> they have already shut down it's fire ball ride and plans to inspect it if the would have done the inspections yesterday but wanted to wait till this morning for the sunlight to get up so they can get a better look. the fire ball ride here in santa skruz made by the same manufacturer as the one at the

ohio state fair as you can see in this cell phone video that's been widely circulated on social media came apart yesterday fling a number of riders into the air on to the ground. one person dead, seven more hurt, some critically. the boardwalk hasn't had any problem with the fireball ride, shutting it down was just to be extra cautious. management wants to check with the manufacturer to see if there's any special adjustments they need to make after what happened in ohio. there is a key difference between the fireball here at the boardwalk and the one that malfunctioned in ohio. that one in ohio is portable which means it can be broken down and set up at a different location. >> our ride is a fixed ride, permanent amusement ride, it's inspected daily as state mandatesed. california has the most stringent ride safety regulations in the world. >> just because somewhere else happen doesn't mean it's going to happen here. >> reporter: after this morning's inspection the boardwalk expects his fire ball to reopen sometime today.

incidentally, our newsroom did some deciding and found that sonoma county state fair is supposed to have a fire ball ride when it opens next week. the website however does mention that those rides are subject to change. reporting live here in santa cruz outside the boardwalk, bob redell, today in the bay. see hour comfortable parents are with using that ride after all of this. >> and you know it's not just of the santa cruz boardwalk where the ride has been shut down. officials at the california state fair in sacramento tell us they've shut down the fire ball ride there as well as the investigation of the deadly accident in ohio gets underway. but unlike the boardwalk, state fair officials don't plan to reopen the ride until the ohio state fair investigation is complete. an inspector at the state fair is assuring people is there therehave been no issues with any of the rides there. >> we come in a week and a half trier prior to opening so we look at the rides as they're coming off the trailers and we look at them until the day they open. we watch the operation. >> it is important to note the

rides at the california state fair are operated bia i darch company than the one operating rides alt ohio's state fair. 6:04, a san francisco police officer accused of posing child pornography could be in court as soon as today. authorities arrested 37-year-old joshua enea yesterday. investigators say multiple images of child pornography were found on a computer at his and yok home. those findings were the result of a five-month long joint investigation involving police in san francisco and contra costa prosecutors who spoke yesterday about the arrest. >> it's very troubling that a sworn peace officer would have any of this stuff on their computer. >> well, enea was released on bail last night. he's now suspended without pay. when the investigation first started police say he was moved to a desk job. them. oc: in some of them trt=10 laura/cont.vo new this morning... fans of the classic 1960s

♪ it's 6:14 with a cloudy start this morning. and as we look at temperature's temperature trend for cupertino it will be nice for most of the morning and that's when you want to get out there and go for a run and do some yard work as our temperatures will be heating up fast reaching in the upper 80s. going to be hot over the next few days so i guess we better get used to it. i'll talk more about it coming up at about 6:19. about now looking at travel times in the tri-valley not showing a major problem over here. 580 is 24 minutes grant line over to the dublin interchange. six:14 right now on your thursday morning all new this morning the inmate who escaped from riker's island jail in new york city has been found. turns out he didn't make it too far. 24-year-old burglary suspect was found hiding out in a trailer on riegers island.

it was about 3:00 in the morning eastern time that he was found. investigators say he jumped the fence and escaped the jail yesterday afternoon. there are reports it happened as two inmates were distracting the guards who were watching after a small group. the missing inmate wasn't noticed until much later. well, if you are planning on flying out there's a new security rule you should be ready for. tsa now is starting to screen all devices larger than your cell phone. that includes ereaders and tablets. they have to good through a sprit bin at the x-ray machine. travelers we are spoke with said they were kind of mixed about this added level of screening. >> save the safety's been a big problem especially overseas so i think it's good that, you know, they're just keeping us safe. >> it's a hassle. i would rather put nefrg my check luk lug gauge but he want to it to arrive in one piece so i take it on with me. >> you're going to see these changes implemented in the coming weeks. in march the department of homeland security banned laptops

amazon says it will hire 50,000 people next month to work at ten wear houses throughout the united states including tracy. there's a big jobs hiring fire on august 12th. there's more about that ahead on the today show. >> there are rumors meg wit man may be the ceo of uber. those rumors got fuel as wittman stepped down from her other job as chairman of the board at hp. you'll recall hewlett-packard split into two companies. up to this point wittman had a roll at boej companies. we do know from uper insiders that ub's pretty committed to finding itself a female ceo and their lot of good candidates out there, the problem is like wittman, they already have a job. shares in facebook hit a new hype as that company raked in money. twitter turned in its numbers this morning, not a lot of growth in the number of people joining twitter. all three industries hit new records on wednesday. then the white house yesterday announced a new foxconn plant will be built in wisconsin.

you remember president trump promised three new apple factories and that left us confused. this might be what he was talking about. foxconn does make the iphone and its factory's in china. so not three apple factories just one apple factory and they're making apple products but this might be what the president was talking about. >> trying to refer to, i guess. >> this doesn't officially count but it's kind of on the right track. it's big apple products. >> you're decoding it for us, thank you. take a look at this. church in east tennessee using its message sign to poke a little fun at the scorching summer weather. it says too hot to keep changing the sign, sin bad god good hear more sunday at 10:00 a.m. they say the message is spot on and hilarious. east tennessee has been socking that heat wave with temperatures consistently hitting the 90s or higher and i imagine a bit of humidity as well. >> this is what hell feels like. >> so rin, be good.

>> hopeful that i church has some air-conditioning. >> i was going to say, ac inside. >> yeah, i think so. and we're just trying to find some air-conditioning all around the bay area this weekend as we are going to have some hotter temperatures on the way. but we have the nice cool fog as we get a look right now. trust me, there's the golden gate bridge in there somewhere. i know you can't see it right now but we are dealing with some patchy fog right now and along the coastline that's not going anywhere for the morning hours and then for the inland areas it's going to be bright and sunny, high temperatures today even hotter than yesterday hitting the triple digits in concord and antioch. live more almost there, 97 degrees, san jose 88 degrees and 79 degrees today in oakland. as we get a look at the day planner for san jose, you're making plans to get out there early that will be the best thing, especially if you're going for a long bike ride or if have you some work do outside,

it's going to be in the lower 80s but noon. upper 80s by 4:00. and then once those winds kick in we'll drop it back to 75 by 7:00. and it will be a nice beach day. we're going to see the high temperatures reaching into the low 70s today with some shine, but i wanted to give you a heads up and an update on what's happening out there in the pacific. we have hurricane hillary and tropical storm irwin and these two will do what we call a fuji effect and they will rotate around each other and then be absorbed into one hurricane. as we go into the next several days this will churn up the waters and will create some dangerous rip currents and higher waves especially for southern california but we'll be watching out for that hered to for area beaches as our temperatures heat up. and look at san francisco we'll be in the lower 70 as we head towards saturday and sunday. and for the inland areas you'll probably want to escape this kind of heat, upper 90s and that continues as we head back to work next week.

that's where those temperatures will really get unbearable over the next few days. it is going to be really hot. do you like garlic fries. >> i love garlic fries. >> got the convenient coming up for you mike but you're hearing bay crash in the bay bridge? >> i am. but we're looking at this live camera the. crash is reported it vofltz a motorcycle, big concern to me because of course less shielding for the driver and also more of of a distraction for folks. but it was reported right here in lane one. you see traffic flowing smoothly. i did see some folks hitting their brakes many lane 2 and they may see something that they're moving over. i'll track this carefully no major injuries reported nish initially. the map does show you there's the backup at the toll plaz and at berkeley curve. we do have a slower drive on the san mateo bridge. what's happening is they're recovering from an earlier crash at foster city, that's the ripple effect but now we're seeing the ripple over toward the dumbarton bridge. more folks taking that, a little bit heavier burst than we might

expect so we'll track them all. seeking justice for the elderly south bay woman who was known from her friends and family as just ms. flo. happening today a sixth suspect charged in the brutal assault of ms. flo is expected to appear in court. >> you may remember ms. flo was attacked in her home last year. she died from her injuries among later. today in the bay pete suratos is live outside the hall of justice in san jose this morning with a growing list of suspects in this case the good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you laura and sam andersena ka santos is the latest suspect to add to that list and i want to point out she's the mother of the one of the suspects accused of murdering the woman affectionately known by many as ms. flo. now that suspect i'm referring to is 19-year-old johnmy brown. he appeared at the hall of justice just yesterday. we'll show you joe of him in court appearing bray judge seen there in that orange jumpsuit. the 19-year-old was arrested by police on tuesday and is the second suspect direct leigh cuesed of murdering 88-year-old

flo douglas inside of her san jose home last year. the first suspect is 19-year-old zachary cue within who was arrested just days after douglas was brutally attacked and now brown's mother is facing charges of being an accessory after the fact of the murder. now the death of ms. flo as she was affectionately known by many in the south bay sending shock waves throughout the south bay community. and new court documents reveal in early secht last year that cue win and brown along with three other suspects planned to rob her but prosecutors say their plans went two far with the men aggressively beating douglas taking her car, belongings and even leaving her on the floor of her home even returning minutes later to beat her again. she did die of those injuries a month after that attack. >> what a treasured individual she was. it's -- it's a tragedy not only to her family and to her friends, but also the community.

>> reporter: as it stands, there are a total of six people facing charges in connection to this case. santos is said stoet appear in court at some point this afternoon. we've live in san jose, pete suratos for "today in the bay ". thanks for that update. happening today san jose police will hold a meeting to inform people on how they can protect themselves from burglaries. tonight's meet sgt last of a series of four. it will be held at the hills view library at 7:00 tonight. the meeting comes amid a spike? crimes in the neighborhoods in summer. today in the bay did some investigating and looked at the numbers provided by san jose police. had what we found. there has been a 25% jump in car thefts this year compared to last year. there's also been a spike in larcenies, about 5%. but burglaries are down about 4% from last year. all new four this morning, walnut creek preparing for some emergency. this video just into our newsroom shows an overnight disaster drill in walnut creek although it looked very realistic.

crystal methamphetamine heading to australia was busted in santa rosa. here's how much methamphetamine we are talking about, heaps of it. or just ice is what it's called on the streets. press democrat reporting this morn that was found in a storage facility earmarked for a trip to australia. investigators say they arrested three men in australia. one of those men baht a plane in santa rosa and was planning on flying the drugs back to that state. a new dog park is report lid cupping to palo alto. according to palo alto online, the parks and rec department through their support of the new park this week that they urge the city to act quickly. it's expected to be built as pierce park in the northern part of town. right now the city of three dedicated dog parks but they've been working on i creasing that number for years. two other proposals in north palo alto fell through in recent months. some bay area soccer fans might still be feeling a little euphoric this morning after a win last night.

stanford alum jordan morris kicking the game-winning goal that was in the 88th minute of play. the u.s. goes on to beat the jamaican team 2-1 for revenge the last time these two teams met. more than 60,000 fans attend last night's game. one group kind of lost before the game even started. thousands of fans of team mexico bought their tickets assuming their team would make it to the finals only to see them lose in the semis. >> supposed to be like usa versus mexico but noups it's usa versus jamaica but we're just trying to get a good time. >> well, the night was more than just about fun and games on the field. lots of folks there heading out for the pregame fess activities. the fiesta in the parking lot at levis, bring your chips, your soccer shirts and flags, it was all things football or soccer if you prefer. mike. there was a crowd and it was slow getting out of there last night and i think the announcer had the whole goal until the last car got out that's why it

was so long. over here things are cleared up around levi stadium and light all around the south bay. we're going to focus in on the slower drive right now for both the san mateo and dumbarton toll plaz approaches there. a slower drive on both of those. the earlier crash affected the san mateo bridge which is cleared and when they heard about that crash. 8 looks nice as you head over there throughout the east bay and over yawl a lighter flow of traffic. drive times in the south bay no mange juror problems for san jose just a typical pattern here. and a quick look at the north bay as well it is fog at the golden gate bridge it's clear here and traffic flows well very, the s curve. >> maybe i need a weekend. >> there you go, well, sum's upon us. >> we got one in our back pocket. you asked mike a second ago if he likes garlic fries. you think about this? you stopped for a second. >> where could that snb where could you get garlic fries.

>> i don't know. >> every yoor, last weekend in july. >> and it's always hot, right. it's going to be hot again this weekend as you make plans to get out there. and let me show where you it's going to be cool on saturday, the coast. of course 70 degrees, 87 by the bay, and 95 inland. on sunday it is going to be more of the same, some extreme heat in the valleys while the bay will be at 84 and 701 for the coast. we were talking about those garlic fries, you can get them in abundance on saturday and sunday too at the garlic festival in gilroy at christmas hill park. it's going to start out at 80 degrees and if you kwnt get out there early maybe you'll be riding the garlic train. we'll be seeing those high temperatures reaching into the mid-90s and that's when you'll want to taste that free garlic ice cream. on saturday as well we have the park street and wine fair happening in alameda had the this going on all weekend long and it will be nice and cool there only seeing those high temperatures barely making it up to 70 degrees. and if you're going to be

little bit of sun coming through underneath those low clouds this morning. as we start out the morning right now at 6:42 our temperatures are going to be nice and cool. 8:00 we'll be at 64 degrees and rising in the upper 80s today. starting to heat up above our normal high temperatures and it stays hot over the next several days. we'll talk about what's ahead as we go into the weekend that's coming up at about 6:50. >> and these travel times slow across all of your bridges right now, at least the ones here, bay bridge, san may toe yea bridge and the dumbarton. thank you very much kari and mike. 6:43 live look at the santa cruz boardwalk this morning where ride operators expect to reopen their version of the fire ball thrill ride today. it was closed last night after a deadly accident in ohio yesterday involving the same kind of ride at the state fair. one person died, several others now seriously injured. that ride malfunctioned literally just breaking apart.

riders were flown into the area air. on the today show one of the two sisters next in line for the ride talked about what she believed led to the mishap. >> the fire ball was -- and then it leaned to left and it looked like someone's chair was -- >> they say that someone went flying. they could see what happened. you can find the same kind of ride at lots of fairs across the country including the california state fair. the ride is closed until the investigation in ohio wraps up. the west coast edition of the today show coming up in just moments you can catch that entire interview in a report from ohio with all of the overnight developments from that investigation. new this morning, a rough week is getting even rougher for pop star justin bieber. the singer struck a member of the pap razz decide with his truck in beverly hills over night. obviously the cameras were rolling. but this is what happened as he was leaving an event you see the rear view mirror clips the photographer and knocks him

down. now bieber did get out to help. that photographer, 57-year-old man we're told suffered minor injuries. earlier this week, bieber athounsed that he is ending his current world tour, canceling the remaining 14 shows on the slate. we have a disturbing story coming out of mira possessa county to report on this morning, thousands of firefighters as you know are on the front lines battling a detwiler fire. this morning we're hearing that somebody has been stealing from those firefighters. the sacramento "b" reporting that two radios, two helmets and a iphone were stolen from fire trucks on monday and this happened while they were resting in motels in merced after serving 24 hour long shifts. 5,000 firefighters are collectively batting the detwiler fire which has consumed more than 81,000 acres. today it's at 70 pes containment. in the meantime mandatory evac weighings have been lifted after this fire burning in apple ma dore and el dorado count

ties. it's burned 154 acres. as of the last update it's at 15% containment. that fire came dangerously close to homes at one point. they say that one evacuation center is going to be open until 8:00 this morning. the exact cause of that fire is under investigation. they say it started in the back of someone's house. a plan to add nearly a million more housing units is moving forward. it's part of the big plan bay area 2040 meeting that was held yesterday in san francisco. regional leaders voted on a future growth blan. it also calls for the million new jobs mostly led by tech companies. happening today, construction of the state $64 billion rail project could take a big step forward. they could decide whether whether state owned and rail lines strict environmental review law. they have faced several lawsuits

violating the air quality control act. today's decision could also apply to the bullet train planned between san francisco and los angeles. the president this morning warning republicans not to let the american people down today. >> using his pulpit, that message coming in a tweet urging senators to end obamacare. >> it's worth reminding the president a majority of americans actually support some form of the affordable care act but the senate keeps trying to chip away at it. the senate has taken two votes on bills so far, both have failed. there's another vote expected today, the so-called skinny bill that would actually leave much of the aca in place including the medicaid expansion. so, today's skinny bill keeps that expansion in place, but it will remove the individual mandate. that's the rule that everybody has to buy insurance. that's bad for insurance markets, if healthy people stop buying insurance insurance companies won't want to be sell

forecast for the valleys. 100 for antioch, pleasanton, 98 degrees in free monday looking at a high of 89 degrees. we'll be at 87 phonpalo alto, san mateo 80 degrees and for the outer sunset expect a hive 64 with slow clearing of the clouds and sonoma today expect a high of 96 degrees. so really getting hot in a lot of areas. and as you're getting ready this morning, starting out just looking at the closet and just trying to wake up on this friday eve, make sure you grab a hat or something that may give awe i little bit of some smad and also some short sleeves, something light colored and lightweight. or if you have the day off maybe you can make taye pool or a beach day, great day for the swimsuit and sunglasses or just relaxing trying to find some cooler air as we will also be feeling some cooler temperatures along the peninsula. going to some of the hiking trails there, it will be cloudy and foggy to start, but we will get some clearing by about teb 0 clork. our temperatures at sift 7 along the coast and for the early afternoon hours reaching into the low 60s and then those winds

kicking in. not much of a wind if you're going for some golfing in the tri-valley. the best will be early in the day then look at how hot it gets reaching into the upper 90s throughout the afternoon and is going to be hot also for napa valley throughout the weekend, upper 80s to even some mid-90s by the end of the weekend. while san francisco will be in the low 70s. for saturday and sunday looking good there but look how hot it gets for the valleys, up to 99 degrees on sunday. i'll have more on that but now mike you have a new crash in san jose? >> i do. an it's a concern because in northbound 87 that's when we're really starting to see the traffic flowing out of the valley. that's at the bottom of your screen here and it's a tough drive. this has only had a few michbz backup as this crash is the middle of northbound 87 just north of the certer in getting up to communications hill. -- i'm sorry just north of capital expressway wand up toward curtner. we're look alt a big slow drive right here. that's the problem. 101 will likely see more traffic

told you he was knocking on the door of becoming the richest person in the world. well, amazon stock has shot up 12 points right now over $1,064 per share and that's pushed base bezos ahead of bill gates. he has jumped him and is now the richest man in the world at more than $90 billion. 6:58 san francisco police officer accused of possessing child pornography may be in court as soon as today. authorities yesterday arrested 37-year-old joshya enea. they say multiple images of child pornography were found in his computer in his antioch home. though findings were the result of a fine-month joint investigation involving contra costa police and prosecutors who spoke yesterday about the arrest. enea was arrested -- release i did should say on bail last night and he is now suspended without pay. let's take you live right now to walnut creek and the bart station there where the morning commute's already well under way. mike's been keeping you up to date on that but we're going to
