friday - on this 28th day of july... a very good friday morning to you. yes, you made it. 20th day of july, taking a live look outside overlooking san jose. last weekend before we actually head into august. hard to believe. we're going to see some soaring temperatures this weekend as we head into saturday and sunday. good morning to you. now we just got to make it through friday. >> no small feat but we are here to guide you along every step of the way and we are watching these temperatures go up again here today. >> yes, it's going to be another hot day and it looks like we just continue on with this kind of weather as we go into the weekend. looking at some highs today for some of the inland areas in the upper 90s, headed in the south bay today up to 88 degrees in san jose, 93 degrees in morgan

hill, for the east bay, we're up to 85, and san francisco low 70s in the mission district. north bay will also be seeing some sporadic 90s here and there with mostly some upper 80s so we'll talk about what's ahead for the weekend coming up. mike already has a note for peninsula drivers. >> but it's a note that's sort of been there for a little while. chp will still have activity on 101. the biggest issue is construction crews are clearing, now getting an early start on their friday. chp is staying late after a crash, south east bay at embarcadero road. presence may be a distraction but no closures. look at 101, shows you traffic flows so lightly and smoothly past the scene so we'll track that and let you know what else is going oncoming up. new this morning, video just into our news room where a man is in custody after a lengthy standoff in the south bay atop

the roof of a home. it started before midnight near welsh park. the man was not armed but police say they received calls that he was trying to light the roof of the home on fire. when officers arrived, they say he appeared to be agitated. they also say he knows the people who live there. after about an hour, officers safely talked that man down. they're still trying to sort out what kind of charges will be filed. this went late into the night and developing right now in capitol hill, the latest effort to repeal obamacare has failed. >> so yes, this is a disappointment. a disappointment indeed. i regret that our efforts were simply not enough. >> sounding defeatist there, that's mitch mcconnell. it is yet another blow for republicans and president trump. senator john mccain of arizona joining two other republicans plus every democratic member of the senate in voting against the

skinny repeal bill overnight. >> president trump sounding off and tweeting, three republicans and 48 democrats let the american people down. as i said from the beginning, let obamacare implode, then deal. watch. senator susan collins of maine and lisa murkowski of alaska joined senator mccain in voting against it. cameras caught up with senator mccain after the vote. he gave a quick answer about his decision. >> i thought it was the right choice. >> it was a sad night but i don't believe this journey is over. >> that is texas senator ted cruz, not clear what the republicans plan to do next about health care. in the meantime, there was a lot of celebrating outside of the capitol. supporters of obamacare cheered for senators for voting against the repeal plan. democrats like chuck schumer joined in that brags. so many questions remain about what is next. our coverage will continue from washington, d.c., in just 30 minutes. breaking news right now, and

russia's foreign ministry is ordering a reduction in the number of u.s. diplomats allowed in russia. russia says it's also closing down an american recreation retreat in response to fresh sanctions just passed this week from congress. this week, the senate approved new sanctions against russia, iran, and north korea. happening today, four people are going to be in court for plea hearings in the murder case of a san jose woman who was a popular figure in her neighborhood. those four are accused of all having roles in the death of ms. flo douglas. the 88-year-old woman was killed in a home invasion last fall and three others are also linked to that crime. the hearing begins at 9:00 this morning. new this morning, florida police have released body cam footage of the moments just after a crash last month involving tennis star venus williams. >> i'm not giving a citation. i don't feel comfortable writing a citation when i'm not 100% sure. you had the right of way, you

lost the right of way. they had the right of way also. >> that's video of an officer speaking with williams before she left that scene. footage also shows the 78-year-old passenger in the other car saying he was a little confused. that man has since died. williams has been cleared of any criminal charges. police say she entered the intersection lawfully by the other family involved has filed a civil suit. continuing coverage of that deadly accident involving the fire ball ride on wednesday. here is the latest. the investigation just getting started as other versions of the same ride are closed pretty much coast to coast. that includes at least three fire ball-type rides in northern california. that ride has also now been pulled from next week's sonoma county fair. this as we are learning the man who died was 18 years old and that had just enlisted for service in the marines. another victim is in a

medically-induced coma. needless to say, her mom is in shock. >> she was such a healthy young lady, only 18, trying to have fun and this is what happened. >> santa clara's great america has closed its version of the ride known as the delirium and the santa cruz beach boardwalk briefly considered opening its fire ball ride, then decided against that. there is currently no date scheduled for reopening. 4:36 right now. new this morning, peninsula firefighters are back home this morning. 66 firefighters from menlo park, woodside and redwood city have all been fighting the massive fire since last wednesday. those crews are working 24-hour shifts along with 5,000 other firefighters all teaming together, trying to contain this fire. firefighters right now are getting a handle on the fire. we just checked. this morning it's at 75% containment. though it has gone through 80,000 acres of land so far. an investigation is underway

into why a pilot dropped flame retardant on a neighborhood in windsor. the agency says the pilot was coming back from a pengrove fire and accidentally released 100 gallons of it. it coated nine houses, 12 cars, a camper, and lawns and even a street. you see them trying to -- >> i opened the door and it was like everything was pink. >> so they probably noted that they did something wrong. >> the agency says it is not toxic. city crews covered storm drains before pumping it into trucks. firefighters hosed down the streets and sidewalks and even scrubbed some cars outs there. just how the drop happened is now being investigated. >> free car wash, i guess. >> you're going to need it. have you smelled the garlic lately? it's going to become even stronger across the gilroy area. the gilroy garlic festival, one of the biggest annual festivals in the south bay opens later this morning and runs through sunday. there will be a lot of garlic-filled activities,

good morning. i'm jackie live at cnbc global headquarters. here are your top business head lines. wall street could end the week on a down note, futures lower this morning. it doesn't appear that the markets are moving much on the failed vote in the senate to move obamacare. the dow closing at a new record high but the nasdaq slipping. we get a report today on second quarter gdp which should show the economy rebounded this spring after a bit of a sluggish start to the year. the dow rising yesterday, the nasdaq falling. meantime, wells fargo will pay about $80 million to 570,000 customers with car loans from

the bank who were also sold insurance that they didn't want. an internal report found that customers were charged for insurance even if they had separate coverage. sources saying that the extra cost resulted in many people falling behind on their loan payment and nearly 25,000 cars being repossessed. watch shares of amazon today. the company's earnings missed wall street's forecast by a wide margin, even as sales jumped. amazon continues to spend heavily on any warehouses and technology and hiring lots of workers. if amazon stock closes lower today, jeff bezos will have had a very short tenure, just one day, as the world's richest person. sending it back over to you. i would take even just one day. i think we all would. >> thanks a lot. >> it's tough to stay on top. new this morning about, or i should say abrupt closures right now for hundreds of teavana stores around the country. starbucks purchased teavana five years ago. most of the 379 stores that are being closed are located in malls around the country. many of them are going to be

a monterey beach is being closed to the public after a welcome back, everyone. 4:46 and new morning, a monterrey beach is being closed. it was closed off yesterday. the county department says sewage spilled into the bay area there earlier this morning. the beach will remain closed until the water is safe for people to enter.

no word on how that spill occurred or who is responsible but i'm sure we're thankful that they're closing that. >> that's a very popular area. >> doesn't sound like a fun weekend. >> not great timing for this weekend to shut down a beach. that's one of the places you want to be. >> and i think that's what a lot of people are planning, especially just trying to enjoy the last few weeks before school starts and it's hot and we want to find somewhere cool. well, we're even starting out with some mild temperatures than norm this morning, 65 degrees right now in the tri-valley. 62 in the peninsula and 57 in the east bay. you can see the clouds moving over san francisco. 55 degree there has. the marine layer has been pushed down to about 1,000 feet so we will see those clouds for the next several hours hanging around the coastline and now the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen. you'll see there will be major changes for san francisco over the next few days.

we'll feel the difference for the inland areas. as you start to get ready this morning, it will be another warm day for the valley so a great day for short sleeves and shorts, anything to keep you nice and cool and give you some protection from the sunshine. if you're going out with some of your friends, going out hiking in the east bay, it's going to be a nice sunrise so start out early, even before 10:00 as our temperatures start to warm up, we'll be at 75 degrees at 10:00 and then look at how hot it's going to be at 2:00 up to 90 degrees with lots of sunshine and slow to cool down. one of the cool places you can go and hang out will be golfing at half moon bay today. it will be cloudy and at times foggy especially through at least late morning and then a little bit more sun coming out by this afternoon. high temperatures over the next few days in san francisco will reach into the 60s and then into the low 70s next week but it will still feel very comfortable while the inland areas will get really hot. we're looking at more 90s in the forecast and had to throw in

some triple digits in the end there as well. looks like our seftemperatures hotter for the next week but mike you're learning about a new crash. we did. there is a crash on the peninsula. and now this will be a familiar location. it's willow road at hacker way. why does that sound familiar? because that hacker way is right there. facebook and the campus. it's just off highway 84 and willow. that's a critical point as folks come off that dumbarton bridge. lot of traffic there. we're tracking to see if any lanes are blocked but so far, the police indicate it is off the roadway. meanwhile, looking over here toward the rest of the bay and looking at smooth flow of traffic, although there was a small fire also reported just off highway 87. nothing major but tracking the results as crews start to arrive on scene.

charges. he switched to a guilty plea on wednesday. the 24-year-old was a sitter, tutor, and chess coach before the fbi arrested him in april. he admitted to taking lewd photos of children under his car. a man he identified as a partner, a man who also was a sitter, has a case still pending. internet connected security cameras are growing in popularity from watching for thieves to try to steal packages off your porch to keeping an eye on your pet. >> but this is kind of creepy. what if you weren't the only one who was watching those cameras. vicki nguyen discovered a little-known security concern that could put your privacy at risk. >> reporter: good morning. we were tipped off by a viewer who accidentally discovered a security concern in home surveillance cams sold across the country. kevin was shocked to find these video clips in his e-mail. they showed a woman in her living room. she was setting up the camera, watching tv, eating chips. the video was recorded by a ka

up next, volkswagen is paying back for its emissions scandal. the changes that you'll see here in california and also at our state capital. but first, happening now, out of southern california, an irvine man is facing hate crime charges after throwing coins at two muslim women. a ferrari driver wrecks his $288,000 super car an hour after he bought it. the driver in the united kingdom said the driver was able to walk away, though, with just some cuts and bruises. as for the ferrari went airborne and burst into flames. the car was one of only 499 ever sold. we're back with more news in two minutes.

4:55 right now. california supreme court has ruled that the high speed rail project must follow the state's strict environmental review law. now, project officials for it had argued that federal law doesn't need to meet those standards and that it should trump state law. but the court disagreed and made that ruling yesterday so it's not clear what project officials plan on doing about this next. volkswagen is about to spend millions of dollars on electric vehicles in the state capital as part of its punishment for cheating emissions tests for years. >> sacramento reports vw will spend $44 million over the next 30 months. it's part of an agreement to spend $800 million in california as a penalty for its emissions cheating scandal. the company was caught using software to hide how much their cars were actually polluting. a live look right now at the

bay bridge toll plaza. you are okay this morning with a fast track but there are more and more commuters on the roads this morning earlier and yeearlr and the facts absolutely backing that up. new findings indicate that traffic volume in a commute direction on all bay area bridges has increased in the early morning hours. that means any time before 6:00 a.m. drivers we spoke with aren't surprised, especially those who have to drive further than that to go through the teeth of bay area traffic. >> and at the bay bridge in particular, during that -- the first of these three years, 4:00 traffic was up by 22% year to year, and then up another 11% from last year to this year. >> as for the reasons why people are leaving earlier, it may have to do with driving ahead of morning toll increases or finding a parking spot in more crowded destinations. or they just want to get up early to see kari's forecast
