>> we do start out with nice cool temperatures around the bay area and it will be a fairly warm afternoon. we are right now at 62 degrees in the peninsula as we look live in daly city for the peninsula and tri-valley. live from pleasant ton 58 degrees, 55 in the north bay and we also see those low clouds looking at san francisco, 55 degrees there and our highs this afternoon will reach into the mid 90s for concord, antioch up to 96 degrees, morgan hill 95, san jose in the upper 80s. palo alto will be at 84, oakland 76 and 70 today in san francisco. our temperatures ramp up several more degrees tomorrow, i will talk more about this coming up in a few minutes. mike starts up out with a traffic break. >> the sig alert issued by chp look at most of your bay is moving well, a couple pronounced slow downs as well, but the north bay update the good enough and i have to cover this the crash was completely cleared from the roadway, this one northbound 101 has completely

cleared the roadway. heading away from the golden gate bridge. heading southbound 880 we still have your two middle lanes blocked by a crash at ten son and possibly a second moving to the shoulder as you pass by highway 92. that's a tough corridor from san leandro down towards union city for the nimitz freeway. farther east south 680 slows down through pleasanton. a crash in the center divide as you pass by sunol boulevard. the east bay and tri-valley are more of a concern. >> we will get right back to that breaking news out of san francisco. police on the scene of a standoff. we had been bringing you live updates since 4:30. started as a shooting, a woman was shot just before midnight, "today in the bay's" pete suratos live at the scene near the castro. we understand some police officers just briefed about the situation and you have new information. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. we just got that information from san francisco police and the updates since our last

report we know that there was a woman who was shot and transported to the hospital but we are talking about a standoff that's been taking place since roughly about 11:45 p.m. we're standing on castro street, behind me a 15th street. that's one of the streets where it's blocked off as that standoff continues right up the block. the 2500 block of 15th street. we just got briefed from san francisco police, they're saying shots fired roughly 11:45 p.m. last night. they located a male in this area on that block up there on 15th street. when they tried to make contact with him they're saying he locked himself inside of his home. we are not sure at this time if that is his home, but they're currently negotiating with the suspects but that new piece of information is that we know now that a woman was injured through all of this and was transported to hospital and they don't know the extent of her injuries at this time. we will take you guys back out here live, we're seeing san francisco fire department unit leaving the scene but we see a number of police units here on the scene and we will continue

to monitor the situation of course on that block, there is a shelter in place for folks there as that standoff continues as well as on beaver street down the way here. we will give you more updates as they come in. we're live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." 6:04 right right now. happening today a watchdog group plans to file a legal complaint against google accusing the company of gathering information from consumers without giving people an option to opt out. >> "today in the bay's" rick boone is at google headquarters in mountain view with google's response to the accusations. >> reporter: good morning to you both. yeah, you know, for anyone that uses that search bar on their google page, well, and you do online shopping you might want to know about this. this watchdog group is called the electronic privacy information center, they are asking google to do a full investigation of their practices of how you use google. this is in the point we got from

the "washington post." according to what's going happen this morning, google is gathering credit and debit purchase records of u.s. consumers. this without revealing how they got that info or giving our consumers a way to opt out. google says the program helps prove effectiveness on online ads but critics worry that the information could call into the wrong hands. now, google is insisting any information that you put into a google website they are not sharing with any of their partners and just in case you want to be sure that your information is not given out there google said you can go into the settings, the activity seddings, the settings of your google page and opt out of all that information according to them, but this morning that group their acronym is phone as e.p.i.c., they will be filing that suit against google, against those practices. so stay tuned. in the meantime we're live in mountain view, rick boone for

"today in the bay." >> happening today we're expect to go hear details about a report that found an oakland city council member violated city ethics rules. >> they find lynnette gibson mcelheney broke ethics rules in 2014 when she interfered to stop construction of a proposed housing development next to her home. the commission is scheduled to present that report during a special meeting tonight at city hall at 6:30. a follow-up on a story we broke on nbc bay area over the weekend. many questions remain unanswered this morning in connection with the death of a 54-year-old milpitas man. his body was found early saturday morning at windsor street near calaveras boulevard in milpitas. all police are telling us is that they considered this a homicide case but they are not saying why. the man's identity is not being released either and there is no one in custody. >> authorities are trying to determine if a weekend smash and grab jewelry robbery is expected

to other similar crimes. three masked thieves targeted the novato costco they grabbed thousands of dollars in jewelry before taking off in a waiting car. this is the fourth time in two months the bay area costco jewelry departments have been targeted in the same way. each time by three masked chiefs. we're going to do what we can to identify the suspects. we will work with outside agencies that have experienced the same incident and see if we can't collaborate. >> the other thefts happened in danville and foster city. in all those cases three masked thieves carried out nearly identical crimes without showing any weapons. happening today senator john mccain is back in arizona to begin treatment for his brain tumor. doctors discovered the tumor earlier this month when they were removing a blood clot above his eye. he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, despite the diagnosis the senator flew to

washington to cast deciding votes blocking republican efforts to repeal obamacare. today he will begin radiation and chemotherapy treatment at the mayo center in phoenix. we're back live to washington, d.c. this morning where president trump will swear in his new chief of staff this morning. >> "today in the bay's" tracie potts live in washington. this comes as several issues bear down on the white house, russia, north korea, healthcare, you name it. >> right. and general jon kelley will have to deal with all of that, he will become official in about 20 minutes or so from now. we are supposed to get a look at that swearing in ceremony and then meetings to introduce as the new man in charge. >> law and order behind the scenes at the white house this morning. first on the president's agenda today, swearing in his new chief of staff. former homeland security secretary general jon kelley. >> i think he will bring some

management. >> and we will be watching closely to see what we believe is the first face-to-face between president trump and his attorney general since the president became very public and vocal about his criticism of jeff sessions for stepping back from the russia investigation. back to you. >> that could be a tense meeting. tracie, thanks. 6:10. dangerous conditions at bay area beaches. two tropical storms in the pacific are causing stronger currents and unpredictable waves. the waves will affect beaches from sonoma county to monterey county. beaches in southern california have already closed because of the massive waves. the dangerous conditions will last through about 11:00 tonight. it's 6:10 as we take a live look outside in san jose on this monday morning, we will have some mostly clear skies and then as we go through the day high temperatures reaching into the upper 80s. look at the temperature trend, we start out at 70 at 10:00, up to 88 degrees by 4:00.

good monday morning. it is 6:14. we wake up with some clouds as we take a live look outside in palo alto and our temperatures start out nice and cool. we will be at 67 degrees at 10:00 this morning, in the upper 70s by lunchtime and that's where we should be for this time of year, but it continues to go up from there. reaching into the low 80s. a nice day today but warming up

tomorrow. we will talk about all of the numbers coming up in about five minutes. and these travel times getting bigger for the southbound 880. that crash still in lanes at tennison, that's a problem for the east bay. thank you very much. kari and mike. it's a quarter after 6:00 right now. a follow-up on a story we've been reporting on for really a few years now. a lawsuit has been filed against a union city school district after a third grade teacher was convicted of molesting students. you may recall this case michael howie, he taught at alvarado elementary school. he was sent to prison in 2013 for molesting nine students. now the east bay times is reporting one of the victims is suing the new haven unified school district which employed that teacher. the suit argues the district knew about the teacher's behavior but did nothing about it. the faa reportedly getting closer to a plan to reduce airplane noise over some bay area cities. the agency recently released a report on noise reduction recommendations for planes

flying into the bay area. the report focuses primarily on flights arriving at sfo and palo alto is among those cities feeling the impact. one solution involves a new flight path for incoming planes. faa leaders now have to decide which recommendation to enact. there is no set timetable on when they might do that. business and tech news now, you might want to leave the cellphone home the next time you take a trip to hawaii. >> let's check in with landon dowdy. that i would be willing to do if i was going to hawaii, landon. >> why to you need a phone when you have those views. good monday morning. wall street is poised to start the week off on a positive note, the markets were mixed last week amid several big earnings reports and the feds decision to leave interest rates unchanged. investors will get several pieces of economic data this week including the key jobs report out on friday, also look for more earnings including apple, which reports tomorrow.

on friday the dow rose 33 points to 21,830, the nasdaq slipped seven points to 63.74. sprint is looking for a merger partner but charter communications says it's not interested in buying the wireless provider. sprint's parent company soft bank is reportedly exploring whether it will still make a takeover offer for charter or renew merger talks with t-mobile. it wants to create this one stop shop for internet and phone service to compete with the likes of verizon and at&t. >> and if you are planning a hawaiian vacation put down that phone. starting in october you could get a fine in honolulu for looking at your phone or electronic device when you've crossed the street. the city's mayor says the measure is a reminder for people to use common sense so they don't become a statistic. the fine is $15 to $35 for the first offense. scott and laura, kind of like the modern day j walking ticket

week and it's monday, too. as we get a live look outside right now at the golden gate bridge you can see that the top of the tower is still shrouded in the low clouds and fog but still the drivers are making it across okay without using the windshield wipers. as we get a look at our temperatures now as you get ready to head out the door we are mostly in the upper 50s, now 60 degrees in san jose and the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen, you can see we will have some 90s, mid 90s in the forecast as we head into tomorrow as well as wednesday. we're going to be there today in morgan hill, up to 95 degrees, cupertino know topping out at 90 degrees, east bay, oakland, 76, livermore today at 95 degrees and 84 in palo alto while daly city will see the high temperature of 64. outer sunset at 65 in the mission district today 72 degrees, lower 90s for sonoma and point reyes reaching 71 degrees for the north bay.

if you're going out to the battle of the bay this evening it's going to be a nice one, it will be in the upper 60s with mostly clear skies and lower 60s later on this evening and going golfing in the tri-valley today make sure your tee time it early. by early afternoon already in the mid 80s, mid 90s today for 3:00 to 4:00, we will be at 94 degrees. the high heat is what we will be talking about over the next few days as our valleys and the hills will be the hottest, our air quality will be going down and the fire danger will be increasin increasing. we will be watching out for a chance of thunder and lightning on thursday and we are not the only ones dealing with this heat. portland and seattle could be setting all time record high temperatures up to 107 and we will have heat advisories kicking in tomorrow and wednesday. looking at san francisco's high staying in the upper 70s while the valleys will be up to 102 tomorrow and once again that chance of some thunder and lightning on thursday. heading over to mike now, you're

camping up. then we will have a chance of some lightning. i will talk about all of that coming up in a few minutes. mike is focusing on hayward. >> i'm glad you were surprised about i that lightning, too. looking over toward hayward, a smooth drive, we are not surprised to see the light peninsula, the south bay great as well. all of your issues focused in hayward, there have been a series of four or five crashes on the southbound side, the northbound side that crash did clear, it was a distraction. we have recovery right through this area, san leandro we have the build forming because all these folks coming off of castro alley and out of oakland so that's a problem. with he also have folks heading into the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are on. no problems for the maze but we do have the metering lights. >> we will get back to breaking news out of san francisco. police have still at the scene of a standoff near the city's castro district. this started as a shooting just

before employed knight. now people are told to stay in their homes. "today in the bay's" pete suratos has been live at the scene all morning and, pete, you have updates. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. i just talked to san francisco police and they're telling us that s.w.a.t. team negotiators are right up this hill on 15th street and castro street so right up the hill at 15th street is where this situation is happening as that truck driving by. you can see now where police are stationed. now, they've been here since about 11:45 p.m. according to san francisco police and they're saying they responded to a shots fired call in this area and they're saying that they located a man -- well, there was a shooting suspect in that area who barricaded himself inside and that's where the negotiations are currently taking place. now, we do report in the last half hour as we can report right now there was a woman there that was injured that they transported to a hospital. now, we don't know exactly what the relationship is between that shooting suspect barricaded inside and the woman who was

shot. that's all under investigation. you see the scene here live, you see this is where folks are being told to shelter in place on 15th street. that's the same situation to the west of us on beaver street. it's an active scene. i will continue to monitor the scene and monitor folks who might be affected on my social media accounts. live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." at 6:33 right now a popular south bay restaurant hopes to reopen after a driver caused damage to the front entrance. this is a look at the aftermath from early yesterday morning, it happened at the los gatos café on north santa cruz avenue. authorities believe a brake malfunction caused a woman to crash her suv into the front door and patio. they haven't provided an update on the drivers injuries but the car had front end damage. we spoke with neighbors who came by that scene to view it. >> we thought, oh, they're remodeling, didn't know they needed to. and then when we came into the winery and said what are they doing next door, he said, well,

somebody decided to use it as a drive through last night and here it is. so we came out to see. >> it's a good thing it didn't happen it was so popular on the weekends. the owners seed to have a sense of humor about the crash. they said someone mistook it for a 24-hour drive-thru. vice president mike pence is in estonia assuring the nato country's president she has america's support. this is new video of the vice president shaking hands with estonia's president this morning. estonia and other countries are concerned over russia's aggressiveness in the region. pence plans to visit three nato allies during the trip. he tweeted we stand with the people, and nations of estonia, latvia and lithuania and always will. the state department is responding to russia after vladimir putin ordered american diplomats out of the country. the state department is calling that move, quote, a regrettable and uncalled for act. putin is retaliating after our

congress passed sanctions against russia last week. putin now says more than 700 diplomats must leave russia by september 1st. at this point it's not clear we have 700 diplomats here but here is what formerfikyk u.s. ambass to russia michael mcfaul is saying about putin's actions this morning. >> one, because i think it's unjustified, we didn't meddle in their elections so why are our diplomats being punished? and number two it's not symmetric to what we did. the obama administration kicked out 35 diplomats, allegedly those that were actually working as intelligence officers. this reduction is over 700. >> mcfaul speaking from stanford this morning, you can hear more of that interview coming up on the "today" show at 7:00 right after "today in the bay." it is 6:35. marine biologists are trying to figure out what killed a dead humpback whale. it washed ashore in monterey bay over the weekend. people noticed the dead whale in the water near pill beach and notified authorities. officials are now collecting

tissue samples and checking to see if the whale was perhaps hit by a ship. in the past three weeks marine biologists have spotted ten humpback whales swimming in the monterey area. >> in just about 30 minutes bicyclists and pedestrians will no longer be allowed to cross the willow road overpass in menlo park. that overpass above 101 is under construction. starting at 7:00 this morning a shuttle service will be put in place. caltrans replacing the old overpass with a newer wider one. new this morning north bay's smart train isn't operating just yet but already there's talk of building future stations, the transit system was approved an extension to larks burring that's schedule to open in early 2019. no official date has been stet for the sonoma marin commuter station to open. happening today live look at the oakland coliseum where you can throw out the records for the annual bay bridge series as the giants take on the a's.

high-rise and luck kree foster city. >> it may only be monday but we are always looking forward to the weekend. >> it was such a nice weekend. >> i loved it. >> we're going to struggle through this week. >> by the time the weekend gets here we will be like, yes, it's finally here. on saturday we will see those high temperatures in the low 90s, which will be an improvement over about -- what we are about to experience and for the bay it will be up to 73 degrees, the coast will be at 67, checking out sunday's forecast for the bay we will be at 70 degrees, a nice cool coast while the inland areas will start to feel those temperatures coming back down in the upper 80s. for napa valley it will still be hot on friday but this weekend it will be in the mid to upper 80s, mostly sunny skies, looking at nice weather there. if you are planning to make it a beach weekend it will be much cooler, maybe friday will be the best way to get there and of course they have the live music on the boardwalk but we will be on the upper 60s to low 70s for

privacy and storing your bank information. this is coming from the watchdog group electronic privacy information center which is reportedly going to file a lawsuit against google today. they're asking for a full investigation of google on how the search giant gathers information. google denies the allegations. new this morning the owner of $60,000 electric train that was stolen in the east bay is begging thieves to return that train. it brings joy to hundreds of children. the train was inside this trailer parked in pleasant hill when that trailer was stolen early sunday morning. now, owner eric sossamon spoke to us just a few minutes ago, says he's heartbroken. the kids just light up when they see it. we drive them around in a circle and they have a big smile on their face the whole time. it's so simple, it's such simple fun and the kids just love it. they absolutely love it. sossamon says he hopes to get the train back before the next event which is next weekend. anybody who can help bring this

train back, sossamon is offering free train service to the charity of their choice. >> it's pretty recognizable there. 6:44. new this morning a new report out overnight says russian hackers may have targeted san francisco state university students. the examiner says an ethical hacker says he was able to access sensitive information like social security numbers and home addresses. in a deposition the paper says the hacker told the school who found malware traced back to russian i.p. addresses, the school says no student information was compromised. new this morning a rocket launch in japan that many hoped would go down in history instead went down in the pacific. hundreds turned out for the launch yesterday but the rocket apparently had some damage after liftoff which interrupted in communications failure. the unmanned rocket if successful would have been the first rocket designed by a private japanese firm to reach outer space. >> also new this morning twitter testing a new way of making money by charging a fee to

promote tweets, twitter announced all a sufr has to do is pay a $99 flat fee and glitter amplifies your tweets and your profile for 30 days. this ad model is being beta bested right now, you can only participate if you've been invite jood twitter struggling to make a profit and gain users. let's take a closer look at the san francisco company's performance, just last week twitter shares plunged more than 14% after the company announced little user growth in the second quarter. we brought that to you as it happened. in the u.s. twitter's average monthly active users fell from 68 million to 70, worldwide user base that has been stagnant. 328 million active users. the ohio state fair is back up and running again after last week's deadly ride accident. all of the rides except for the fire ball were back in business yesterday. on wednesday an 18-year-old was killed and seven other people injured when the fire ball ride ripped apart. closer to home the same ride at

santa cruz's boardwalk remains closed while the park waits to hear about its safety. a similar ride at great american also remains closed. it looks like west coast dock workers have approved a new three-year contract extension. the deal covers all 29 west coast ports including the port of oakland. union workers say it's approved by two thirts margin. the current deal expires in 2019 in july so a new contract would likely keep labor peace through at least the middle of 2022. full results we will know about that friday. it's 6:46 right now, consumer advocates are applauding a recent federal order promising an investigation into airline seats. they keep getting smaller and smaller. federal appeals panel on friday ordered the faa to reconsider its decision not to regulate seat size. critics say the problem has been a growing one for years or more precisely a shrinking one. seats are an inch and a half

smaller now. smaller now less than a decade ago. >> as we see more and more people being squeezed into the airplanes we're now reaching the point where we don't think people can get out like they need to and this has become a real safety issue. >> the airline industries says it meets all federal safety standards and calls any regulation unnecessary. a 44-year-old man remains critically injured after a driver crashed into a crowd in los angeles over the weekend. three other people seriously hurt, four others in fair condition. police say the driver of a van plowed into a group of diners on a sidewalk, that driver has been arrested. this morning we know that a san bernardino sheriffs did epty is one of two people killed after a small plane crash in southern california into a mountain. authorities say they found deputy rebecca joan raymond and an unidentified man sunday morning. that crash happened in a remote part of big bear mountain. no word on what went wrong.

6:47. some uc irvine college hopefuls believe they are being unfairly squeezed out of a slot in the fall semester but the school argues it's a tough lesson. >> they had gotten acceptance letters but according to the l.a. times more students accepted those offers than expected and as a result 499 incoming freshmen had their acceptances taken back. the school says the cuts will impact students who didn't do as well on acceptance conditions through poor senior grades or not meeting deadlines. the school says it's drawing a hard line but several dozen legitimate appeals have already been granted. california middle and high schoolers could get more time to sleep in. >> you think they'd like that? that's the idea behind a bill making its way through the legislature. if approved middle and high schools would be banned from starting earlier than 8:30. later start times have been linked to better performance. critics say the rule would disrupt families and cause

problems. that late start thing, i was doing that on my own. >> it can mess up families because high schoolers often pick up their little brothers and sisters. >> that's right. no tardy slips here, mister. >> shall we start with the weather? >> why not because we were talking about just trying to enjoy the last little bit of summer before school starts again and we are going to have some really hot temperatures over the next couple of days. enjoy it now. this is where we begin. we are now seeing the coastal fog in the peninsula, right in the middle of the screen it's 62 degrees as we look live at daly city and san jose right now starting out with temperatures at 60s and while it's 57 degrees now in the east bay the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen, we have a lot of 90s going down the line there. and we're going to be sitting the upper 80s today in san jose, 95 livermore and morgan hill, also 95 today in concord, san

jose will be topping out at 70 degrees today so still feeling very nice. as we get a look out the window and you're starting out getting ready this morning, don't forget those sunglasses. also if you can make it a beach day. we will have more beach days in the forecast, though, if you have to work today and nice day to just try to relax and maybe take the lunch outside while our temperatures are cool. i want to show you what's happening right now in florida. this is making headlines this morning, we have a newly developed tropical storm that is moving right into florida. you can already see those rain bands producing really high amounts of rain. i want to show you the live look of what it looks like in tampa this morning as they wake up you can see the low clouds there, but it looks like those winds aren't too bad when we get the tropical storm status we have wind speeds of at least 75 miles per hour with some of those sustained gusts. this over the next couple of days as we get a look at the forecast track moves right over central florida and back out into the atlantic. we will be keeping an eye on that over the next few days.

we will also be talking about this high heat that will be ramping up not only for the bay area but the pacific northwest. we could be setting all time record high temperatures in spots like portland where it could be up to 107 degrees. we are going to have some heat advisories in effect for the hills and inland areas starting tomorrow. and san francisco keeps a slightly milder temperatures in the upper 70s, inland areas up to 102. i will keep you up to date on that chance of lightning on thursday. and mike says the commute it's limping. >> blending in. we had that focus of all that red over in hayward, then it's smearing out over here, that means more cars are sharing their love for the roadways. over here we're looking at south bay and looking at northbound routes, typical build in the silicon valley. over there this is a really tough drive, starting to move better out of san leandro down towards hayward and union city, back to about the typical pattern, things are moving well through that area. we do have the build for the

here are the top stories on today in the bay... welcome back. before you head out the door this monday morning we have top stories "today in the bay." >> we begin with the latest on the standoff situation in san francisco that we first brought you as breaking news since we came on the air at 4:30. these are live pictures from the scene at 15th and beaver just north of the castro. police tell us they are negotiating with an armed man who is barricading himself inside a home. that ordeal began shortly before midnight when officers responded to a call of a shooting. police say a woman was shot, she was then rushed to the hospital, her condition right now is unknown. investigators are trying to figure out what led up to the shooting. we're also expect to go hear details today about a report that finds an oakland city counsel member violated city ethics rules. the oakland public ethics commission finds lynnette mcelheney broke ethics rules in

2014 when she interfered to stop the construction of a proposed housing development next to her own home. the commission is expected to present that report tonight at 6:30. there are a lot of questions this morning in connection with the death of a 58-year-old milpitas man. nbc bay area was the first to break that news over the weekend. the man's body was found early saturday morning and windsor street nare calaveras boulevard. all police are telling us is they consider this a homicide case but they are not saying why. there is no one in custody. authorities are trying to determine if a weekend smash and grab jewelry robbery is connected to other recent similar crimes. three masked thieves yesterday targeted the novato costco right as it opened. police say they used hammers to smash the cases, grab thousands of dollars in jewelry before taking off in a waiting car. now, this is the fourth time in two months the bay area costco jewelry departments have been targeted in the same way.

each time three masked thieves. the other thefts happened in danville and cost st er city. senator john mccain is back in arizona to begin treatment for that i saw brain tumor today. doctors discovered that tumor earlier this month while removing a blood clot above mccain's left eye. he was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of brain cancer. despite that diagnosis the 80-year-old senator flew to washington last week to cast one of the deciding votes blocking republican efforts to repeal obamacare. coming up next on the "today" show the reason russian president putin ordered hundreds of diplomatic workers to leave his country. >> heads up if you're heading to the beach anytime soon. two tropical storms in the pacific are causing stronger currents and unpredictable waves which is making for dangerous conditions at bay area beaches. the waves will affect beaches from sonoma county to monterey county. beaches in southern california have already closed because of the massive waves. the dangerous conditions will last through about 11:00
