with north korea, just talk. we will no longer allow this to continue. china can easily solve this problem." on this, democrats agree. >> i think the only solution is a diplomatic one. i'm very disappointed in china's response that it has not been firmer or more helpful. >> dangerous challenges around the world for a new president who is also grappling with crises here at home. hoda and matt, back to you. >> andrea, thank you very much. let's talk about more about this. michael mcfaul, former u.s. ambassador to russia, is a nbc news russian affairs analyst. he is with us along with jeremy bash, our national security analyst. gentlemen, good morning to both of you. michael, i want to start with you. as i do, i think you and jeremy slightly disagree on this question. you think this is a pretty aggressive move on the part of the russians, don't you? >> i do. one, because i think it's unjefd. we didn't meddle in their elections. why are our diplomats being punished? and number two, it's not

symmetric to what we did. the obama administration kicked out 35 diplomats, allegedly those who were actually working as intelligence officers. this reduction is over 700. most of those will be russian employees but that's a drastic cut. that's the embass yea of iran. it it will be harder to do business in russia as a result of this. >> jeremy, you feel this is boilerplate that there might be some positive relationship to be had between vladimir putin and donald trump, or president trump, and this is kind of trump or putin saying, business is business. >> trump was forced to sign this bill and putin knows it. i think, matt, that the bromance will continue. russia is getting a lot of return on its investment. it's getting examine effectively what it wants in syria. we agreed to scrap a program that would push assad out of the way. it's also getting what it wants vis-a-vis nato. and our president's response to defending nato has been tepid. and russia likes that. >> michael, you have been

obviously a chief diplomat in russia. if you were to expel 755 diplomats and staff, how does that impact the way the u.s. does business with russia? diplomatically? >> it's huge. when i was ambassador, we had to close down the u.s. agency for international development. that was only 70 people. but that was very, very difficult. and i want to remind you, it hurts russians, too. remember, you go to the embassy to get your visa. that's the biggest section. it's going to take longer for russians to get their visas to come to the united states. this has a boomerang effect that hurts russians, as well. >> let me go to you, jeremy, on north korea. another crisis facing this white house. president-elect trump famously said, north korea just stated it's in the final stages of developing a well capable of reaching the u.s. it won't happen.

what is president trump learning about the north koreans? >> 14 tests. they have cleared most of the technical hurdles that can build an icmb that can go downtown chicago, denver, maybe new york. the last piece would be to miniaturize their nuclear warhead and put it atop that icbm. >> president trump said, the obama administration policy of strategic patience has come to an end. please explain to me what the difference is between the obama administration's approach and the trump administration's approach to north korea is. >> i'm not sure we know what the trump administration's approach is yet, hoda, but the trump administration has before it probably in meetings this week in the situation room a very stark choice. either to step a nuclear armed north korea that can hit the united states, or take military action pretemp preemptively. i would think they would look for a symbolic strike on one

facility in north korea to send a signal. >> michael mcfaul, thank you. jeremy, stick around. we want your take on something else. this is the shakeup at the white house. the president's new chief of staff, retired general john kelly, being sworn in today. and he faces a tough task, transforming a west wing that's seen its share of turmoil in recent weeks. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is here with more on this. >> reporter: good morning. general kelly will get right to work this morning. sworn in within the last 30 minutes. the president predicting he'll do a "spectacular job" and attending his first cabinet meeting as chief of staff. the question, can he bring order and stability? former white house advisers say kelly may provide discipline. the real question, they insist, is whether president trump accepts it. president trump accepts it. this morning, a changing of the guard, general john kelly, the new chief of staff, beginning what may be one of his most daunting missions yet, bringing order to the trump white house.

own party tweeting that, after failing to repeal obamacare, senators look like fools. lating rooting them on, don't give up. the world it watching." also the president is taking heat for these recent remarks to america's police. >> i said please don't be too nice. >> reporter: appearing to endorse rougher treatment of suspects. >> like when you guys put somebody in the car and you're protecting their head, you know, the way you put the hand over -- like don't hit their head and they've just killed somebody. don't hit their head. i said, you can take the hand away, okay? >> reporter: the backlash immediate. the top police chief's group, condemning the comments. underscoring that law enforcement officers are trained to treat all individuals with dignity and respect. the nypd commissioner blasting the president's suggestion as irresponsible and unprofessional. the white house has not commented.

likely with the meeting, we will see president trump in a room with attorney general jeff sessions since he began publicly disparaging him. matt and hoda? >> peter alexander, thank you very much. jeremy, come on back in here for a second. you worked with general john kelly. you know the guy. you know his personality. all this talk about back-stabbing and infighting in the west wing of white house. does he have the personality to accept that or deal with it? how is it going to hand tell? >> no, he won't tolerate that. i know john very well. he and his wife, karen, are the real deal. they are patriots. they have given the ultimate sacrifice. they lost their son, robert, killed in action in afghanistan. november 9th, 2010. they know the meaning of public service. i think john is doing this job for the right reasons. he will be able to succeed if and this is a colossal if, if the president gives him the authority to end the chaos and dysfunction in presidential decisionmaking. it's unclear if the president will do that. >> and if the president listens to him. >> that's right. the president has to take his advice. and he has to make clear that

john is in charge of the entire staff. there aren't just pop-up walk-ins that are allowed. this marine understands the chain of command. >> all right. jeremy, thank you. good to have you here. there's a lot more to get to this morning, including a chilling terror plot, to bring down a passenger jet. this one was thwarted in australia. officials there made the announcement on sunday. and this morning security is being stepped up at airports across that country. nbc's kelly cobiella has the latest on the investigation. good morning to you. >> hey, matt, good morning. yes, the department of homeland security said this morning they're aware and closely following this investigation into what australian police say was a sophisticated plot to bring down a commercial jet. this morning, police are holding four men, all brought in during sweeping raids over the weekend, suspected of plotting to blow up a passenger plane. i know nothing, this suspect says. police have not named the man and they're not yet charged. but investigators still

searching for evidence this morning at several properties across the suburbs of sydney, called the plot credible. and said there was quite possibility a capability to carry it out but did not yet have specifics about location, date or time. >> good intelligence. great policework. great investigation. great coordination has enabled us to disrupt that plot. >> part of a bomb -- >> reporter: local media citing unnamed law enforcement sources reported the plot involved a homemade bomb hid be in a meat grinder and releasing poisonous gas in a plane. police would not confirm that. >> the plot that we're investigating, we believe was an attempt to put a device on to an aircraft. but beyond that, the speculation is just that. speculation. >> reporter: at airports across australia, new tougher security measures. this morning, long lines, more bag checks and frustrated travelers. >> extra caution should be taken. but this is excess honestly. this is just too much. >> it can't be helped. >> reporter: australia hasn't

been hit by a major terrorist attack since the siege and hostage-taking at the lindt cafe in sydney two years ago. two people were killed, along with the gunman. this morning, this country is on alert. and police say the investigation is ongoing. they say they've already seized a number of what they call items of great interest. they haven't said whether the alleged plot is tied to isis, only that it was islamist inspired and involved extensive planning. hoda? matt? morning for an inmate who broke out of an alabama jail sunday night. 11 other inmates, including 2 attempted killers, have already been recaptured. but one escapee is on the loose. 24-year-old brady kilpatrick was jailed for drug offenses.

off-duty law enforcement personnel have been asked to help on that last one. we have an update on the power outage on north carolina's outer banks. tens of thousands of people who were forced to evacuate over the weekend got more bad news on sunday. authorities say all three power lines that serve the islands have been damaged. and electricity could be out for as long as two weeks. on thursday, a construction company accidentally drove a steel casing into a power cable. since then about 70,000 visitors and vacationers have been evacuated. for the second time in eight days, a group of arizona hikers had to be rescued after being stranded by flash flooding. this time it happened in sabino canyon, northeast of tucson. 26 hikers were trapped by raging floodwaters and had to be airlifted to safety. nobody was hurt. last monday, 17 hikers were rescued from a recreational area a few miles away from there. crews used a helicopter to pull them up from the bottom of a

cliff. let's get our first check of the weather this morning. al is off. and dylan is in. we have sticky weather on the way. >> eventually. yes. wesee humidity build in the northeast. we have a tropical depression off of the west coast of florida. winds at 35 miles per hour. the storm system is moving east at about eight miles per hour. it's expected to cross right across florida, through the day and into the overnight hours. by 2:00 a.m., tomorrow morning, we're going to see the storm exit off the east coast of florida and move out to sea, parallel to the eastern southeast seaboard. before it does so, we could see several inches of rain fall through florida. so because of that, we have flash flood watches. in effect and also a tropical storm watch because of those gusty winds. we could see at times two to three inches of rainfall an hour. that could result with five to eight inches of rain in some areas. that's why we could see flash flooding. as far as the southeast coast, south carolina, north carolina, even down into georgia, we're looking at rough surf. that storm should stay out to sea at this point. that's a look at the weather across the country. your local forecast is coming up

who vanished last month. authorities blaelieve this is a rafting trip gone bad. but close friends believe a real-life treasure hunt. this morning, friends and family of eric ashby believe he is the latest tragedy of a treasure hunt. eric's sister says her brother moved to colorado in hopes of looking for vast treasure, famously hidden by forrest fenn. when he heard about the treasure, he was intrigued. that intrigue may have led him to the arkansas river in southern colorado on june 28th. >> eric was attempting to swim across the arkansas river, which i fully believe with all my heart, he was looking for the treasure. and met his fate that day. >> reporter: if he died trying to find the elusive treasure, he's not the first to risk his life searching for it. since the millionaire art dealer

revealed the hidden fortune eight years ago, the hunt has gained national media attention. thousands of adventure-seekers have scoured the great outdoors, looking for million in cold coins and jewels. >> if you are brave and in the wood, i give you title to the gold. fenn says he hit the box of wealth to inspire fortune-seekers. but for some, the search for treasure has turned deadly. last year, hiker randy belllieu was found in the back country. and last month, police asked fenn to call off the hunt, after a colorado pastor died while searching. fenn who turns 87 in august, says these cases are taking a toll on him. and he's urged those looking for the treasure to use cautious. >> the treasure is not hidden in

squeeze. thanks to a court ruling one judge calls the case of the incredible shrinking airline seat. >> they're way too small. i'm a 6'4" guy. and they seem to be made for about a fife-foot guy. >> reporter: the faa orgargued main concern is safety, not comfort. passengers need to get out of a plane within 90 seconds in an emergency. but maintains seat size has no effect on that. the court ordered the faa to review its decision not to regulate seat size. >> airlines have had free rein to reduce seat size and leg room. it's gotten to the point where we believe this has become torture class. >> reporter: flyer's rights brought the lawsuit, saying that the seat pitch has dwindled from a comfortable 35 inches to 31. some planes as low as 28.

while seat width narrowed from 18 1/2 inches to 17. during that same time, the average american has gotten bigger. critics say airlines are cramming people in for one reason, profit. >> it's ridiculous. >> reporter: the airline industry says it meets or exceeds all safety standards and says there's no need for the government to interfere with the market. passengers say they're tired of taking this sitting down. >> bigger, now. get them bigger. they are too small. >> reporter: the faa says it does consider the distance between seats in testing. the agency says that it is carefully considering this ruling. but, hoda, the long-term impact of the ruling is unclear. the judges didn't tell the faa to create new rules, just consider them. >> i think a lot of people look at it and look at it on the

good monday morning. it is 7:56 and we do still have some clouds lingering along the coastline, as we take a live look outside in daly city it's 62 degrees and 63 in the south bay, 58 in the east bay and 54 degrees in san francisco. those clouds we are seeing now will gradually clear out and high temperatures reaching 70 in san francisco, up to 91 in santa rosa and our temperatures very much like they were yesterday, very hot and reaching into the mid 90s, san jose will be up to 88 degrees and palo alto looking at a high of 84. as we go through the week it gets even hotter tomorrow, temperatures peaking touring the afternoon reaching 78 in san francisco and 102 degrees for some of the inland valleys. still very hot on wednesday. then we will have a chance of thunder and lightning on thursday. we will keep you up-to-date on that. let's get an update on the roads from mike. >> we are looking over here to a late easier drive for most of

==topvo== we continue to monitor breaking news in san francisco .. that we )ve been following ever since 4-30 when today in the bay good monday morning. i'm laura garcia-cannon. we continue to monitor breaking news in san francisco we've been following since we came on the air at 4:30. a police stand aww after a violent shooting happening on 15th street and bieber west of the castro. police tell us they're negotiating with an armed man who barricaded himself inside a home and we've just learned within the last few minutes a bomb squad is now on the scene. it all began shortly before midnight when officers responded to reports of that shooting. police say a woman was rushed to the hospital. there's been no update so far on her condition or what led up to the shooting. let's check that morning commute for a monday. how are we looking, mike? >> on the freeways we're looking pretty good. we are focusing on one key

issue, a crash over here, southbound 680 at sunol boulevard. looks like all lanes are clear but we have a motorcycle involved in the crash, the rider and the bike there, as spectators because that is a big distraction. curiosity for folks heading down. slower westbound, but not a big deal. nice drive for the nimitz and a crash reported on the san mateo bridge but i checked with the live camera, no slowing showing up in the last 20. minor showing down the east shore freeway and the metering lights are still on. we'll be back with another local news update in half an hour. see you then.

"feherty" tonight, 9:00 eastern on the golf channel. >> you're not going to give us the career you almost had. what's the weather looking like? >> it's beautiful in the northeast. the humidity is down. the temperatures are nice. the heat is starting to build out west. and we have flood watches that include parts of northern texas, where we will see pockets of he heavier rain. emily is affecting florida to naples. we could see rainfall rates

about two to three inches per hour. tomorrow, that monsoonal moisture continues. record-high temperatures are likely out west, as we get into the triple digits in the pacific northwest. that tropical storm will continue out to sea. and will spare the carolinas and georgia. florida gets most of that. that's what's going on around the country. here's a peek out your window. i'm meteorologist kari hall. we're going to see those high temperatures really very hot for the inland areas. into the mid-90s from concord to antioch, down to livermore and morgan hill. san jose we'll see the high temperature up to 88 degrees and 76 degrees in oakland. also nice and cool in san francisco. warming up in the north bay. and our temperatures continue to heat up over the next couple of days, reaching the peak tomorrow of 102.

that's what our show is about. it's going to be interesting and different of a psychological thriller. we are not looking for who? we're looking for why. why did the seemingly normal young woman who has a family and a child and a husband, why did she do this horrific act? >> it fits because we look at you, watching the first couple of minutes of this, it seems like a role you would be perfect for. a sweet mom. and then, you snap. did you like exploring that part of the human psyche? like what causes someone to snap like that? >> that's it. this is what is wonderful about my job. i get to step into the shoes of someone else and try to understand what this person could have been going through. and how we all, as human beings, have the possibility to snap. we have it within us. but what makes you cross the line? >> we said we aren't spoiling

anything. we know who did it. we need to know why. without spoiling it, can you take me at all in that direction, of what causes her to go from a day on the beach to sitting in the inter garogation room. we're going to look through the history as a younger person. and how that life experience can bring you up to one point, where you make a decision in your life that changes your whole existence. >> i was reading an interview and i think you said, sometimes in real life i have trouble standing up for myself. exploring that character -- that made me like you more, knowing you have trouble. >> she was so-so before on you before that. >> there's something about that part of you. >> thanks.

that's just one of my personal struggles for my whole life to be able to say, i'm not comfortable with that. or this is important to me. and it's one of my many flaws that i'm going to be working on for my whole life. i don't know. >> when someone like you comes on the show, they give us all of the information and they do the career rundown. how old were you when you started in this business? >> i started officially -- professionally working, i was 14. i got "seventh heaven" when i was 14. item "yuli's gold" when i was 14. >> did you think you would do the variety of roles that you've had a chance to do? >> i don't think i was thinking so far in the future. we us passi i was passionate about this work. i was motivated to create something. but i don't think i thought this far ahead. i dreamed big. i said i wanted to be a movie

star. that was a term i had heard and something i aspired to but didn't know what that meant. i don't know exactly what i was thinking about when -- >> it worked out well. >> i was totally insane. my parents were totally insane. >> you have a little boy, silas. a little 2-year-old. would you allow or want him to go along the same path that you and your husband have xhoez cho? >> it's a tough question. it's hard to say no because i was given so many opportunities and my family was so supportive of everything. but it's hard to say yes because it's an intense experience. a tough business. a ruthless business. you know, i would be hesitant if he was so young. i would say, you know what? please finish high school and go to college. do whatever you want to do. we'll see what happens when he's 14 and begging me. >> exactly. >> i don't know.

new jersey. >> it is summertime. we have to take care of these guys. how do you know when your pet is overheated? >> it's important to note that our pets t s do not dissipate h as well as we do. dogs release it through the fpas of feet and panting. you have to look for letthargy, extra panting. and also, obviously, a dog who looks in any way dizzy. if you see the signs, you don't want to douse them in cold water. that can make them go into shock. you need to get them in a cool place. and put cool or room temperature water on them. >> you're talking about sun screen for dogs? >> yes. believe it or not, dogs can suffer from skin cancer. we don't want to use skunscreen made specifically for dogs. when you are using the

sunscreen, you want to give your dogs something good like a treat before you put it on them. >> let's talk hydration. very important. >> i think people underestimate the fact that dogs need so much extra water during the warmer months. there's lots of great products out there. there's cooling bowls. it's nice and cold. >> yeah. >> toys that are nice and cool. but most pareimportantly, they enough walker. you take something on short walks. >> if you live in a city and there's manhole covers and grates. you have to be carieful. >> the temperature of the surface change on behidepending where we are. i feel we are exposing tahoe a little. >> i know people think it's cute when dogs have their heads out

the window. you either want them in a crate or in a harness that's made for them. >> you belt the crate in. and you have to be careful because cars get hot. >> this is a sun visor. we should never leave our dogs unsupervised in a car. >> eva is the sweetest thing. >> you know, obviously, there's a lot of parasites and things we need to be aware of in the summer. talk to your veterinarian to find the one most appropriate for them. and make sure you keep your pet well groomed. if they have matts in their coat, it's harder to find any parasites that might happen. >> matt has a cute dog. >> this is layla. i don't think layla wants to go in the pool. >> this is safety jackets for dogs. >> you need to be careful.

we're back on this monday morning. time for "today food." one of our favorite lifestyle experts is here. also the founder of women of today, camila alves. she's here with a recipe that's loved in her home country of brazil. >> nice to see you. >> we spend time together, in brazil. and i don't remember you making this dish for us. >> do you remember trying heart of palms. >> i do. >> and great, tasty steak? >> yes. >> and tropical flavors. >> we're bringing brazil heat to the american summer. >> you have flank steak. >> jike ginger, garlic, bell pe. my mouth is watering. should we get started? >> you do something unusual right off the bat. instead of cooking the steak as this, you cook it after slicing

it. >> we treat meat differently in brazil. it's going to go in a salad. and we're going to marinate about an hour. and we want all of the taste and the flavors to get in there, really good. you mind slicing it for me? >> you are slicing it -- i did wash my hand after the dog segment. half-inch strips. >> you cut against the grain. i have garlic, ginger, honey -- if i can get the honey out. there we go. soy sauce. going to whisk it all together. >> okay. you said this goes on for about an hour. >> you marinate an hour. >> room temperature. >> room temperature. or you can put it in the refrigerator. we have bell peppers, sliced. we have pineapple, going to slice some. you want to do that for me?

i'll pass the knife over to you. are you good with the knife? >> i'll let you know. >> we're going to put some oil on the grill. woo. little fire going. >> i would imagine that the slices of steak are more likely to stick to the grill an entire steak would. >> exactly. this is going to cook really fast. a couple of minutes each side, and you're done. through the magic of tv, let's take that off the grill. >> looks great. >> you start there. i'll take this off the grill. >> got it. >> here, we have, the pineapple and the bell peppers. we're going to cut into squares. you can keep chopping for me. we're doing a good dance today. and the dressing for the salad, garlic chili sauce. lime juice. juice of one orange.

soy sauce. rice vinegar and oil. we're going to whisk that together. >> and you should whisk. >> come on. >> you should whisk. >> you're doing a dance over there. >> i don't bring that to the whi whisking. >> let's put the pineapples and bell betters in there. >> it's crazy good. matt, wait until you taste that steak. >> the spinach wilts down. >> the balance of the salt and the sweet. and you're trying the heart of palm salad, i recommend you take the lettuce out. just so you know, we do heart of palms all the time. one ounce of heart of palm, equals 40% of the amount of fiber you need a day. you eat this salad without the lettuce, you have the fiber.

==topvo== we continue to monitor breaking news in san francisco .. that we )v en following ever since 4-30 when today in the bay first went on the air: good morning. i'm scott mcgrew. we continue to monitor breaking news in san francisco. we've been following it since 4:30 this morning. a police standoff after a violent shooting on 15th street and bieber west of the castro. police say they're negotiating with an armed man who barricaded himself in a home and within the last hour a bomb squad arrived on that scene. this began shortly before midnight when officers responded to reports of a shooting.

police say a woman was rushed to the hospital. there's been no update on her condition or what led to that shooting. pete suratos is at the scene talking with police and monitoring developments. he'll have a live report in our midday newscast. you can go to our twitter feed as well for a link to our video. president trump has officially sworn in general john kelly as his chief of staff. that swearing-in took place in the oval office. and just into our newsroom, pulitzer prize winning playwright sam shepard has died. he appeared in "the right stuff" and "steel magnolias." he was 73 years old. more local news and traffic and weather coming up in a half an hour. we'll see you then.

legs. the seven minutes it takes me to shave my face, i can do better things. >> you took some timeoff from the show. >> i did. >> tell us about that. >> i took some time off. i was dealing with depression. that was odd to me. i didn't feel like i had anything to be depressed about. and now, i take a meditation called prestique, that sounded like a good mood. and the depression is gone. >> you're okay? >> how important is it to spread -- i think some people think of mental illness and don't take it seriously. >> you have to listen to your body. i felt conflicted because i couldn't figure out what i was depressed about. but it's very real. and that was the scary thing. you wake up and you're like, i don't want to get out of bed.

i was seeing doctors. i had dealt with depression, throughout my life. it was manageable. and everybody feels a little blue. but this just hit me like a truck. i had to take some time off. i went away from it. and i'm feeling great. >> so happy you're feeling well. >> thank you. >> you'll be back on tnt with season four. >> i will be. i think we have a special sneak peek. >> how long have you known about me? >> i wasn't sure until now. but i had my doubts. does cali know? it's not my business. you wanted to disappear and you did. but the world is in trouble again. you see it.

just woke up from a nap, put him in the pool, asleep. he took a half-hour nap in the ocean. >> did you have somebody with him? or just let him bob around. >> just let him float around. we have a sound machine at home. and it's set to ocean. every night, he sleeps to the ocean. i'm pretty sure, there's subliminal messaging there. >> vacationing with a child is a little different. >> it's not about you anymore. >> it's a half hour of lotioning up every bit of his body. then, a bottle. we get to the beach, it's time for nap. >> you get a little break during the naps. >> you have to keep a monitor with you to remind you have a kid. otherwise, you forget. >> i did bring the monitor. he sleeps for 45 minutes.

we sat back down and watched the monitor. he slept for three hours. it's not my fault i had a couple drinks. i didn't know he was going to sleep that wrong. we had tons of babysitters on-hand. but packing for a vacation with a kid. i had five checked suitcases and three carry-ons. i used everything. >> the olding your kids get, can more efficient you get at backing. >> you can make them carry things, too. they get to 7, they're pack mules. >> how old are your kids? >> 7 and 5. >> how make them carry their own stuff. >> by 7 or 5. i have a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old. are you cable to have a vacation? kind of? or not really? it's always work. vacation is a state of mind when you have kids. >> you have to keep them

occupied more. let's do this and do this. >> they're up before anybody else is. and it's breakfast. and breakfast, you have to put them somewhere so they're entertained. by the time night rolls around, you're exhausted. and 9:00, the only tv you're watching. it's not "game of thrones" it's the baby monitor. >> you're saying 5 and 7 is no adult time. >> no. but they're more fun. they do kind of adult things. you can have conversations with them. interesting things come out of their mouth. >> that's funny. >> you had a moment of packing -- >> brian, my cameraman husband, decided to film a time lapse of me packing the night before we're coming home. so, i had all my suitcases opened up. he offered to held. p i said, just let me -- i have
