>> if you get past the cloudence when you step outside you'll be a-okay. the rain showing off it's making an exit. it started with strong cells off to the east. live on the doppler radar we can see the majority of that has moved off to the west and will exit the region. what won't be exiting is the cloud cover and the temperatures climbing into the 70s for san francisco, so as you make your way outside we're in the upper 60s right now, and in san jose we are in the 70s, already at this hour. hitting the 80s by about 11:00 a.m. can we expect to keep the cloud cover through the weekend? i'll have an answer coming up in 15 minutes. first a look at the roads with mike. >> it's light for a friday i want to update a crash in san jose. we have a crew headed out there, not far from the station. as a result of this crash and a car off the roadway chp is looking around to make sure no one was thrown from that car, so we're going to check that out because it does currently have the brokaw road offcamp closed

from northbound 880, so that will be an issue just for that, right there at that off-ramp and you see no slowing on our maps. the rest of the bay moves well. no issues as far as transit goes and look at the bay bridge toll plaza with the backup in a little bit because the backup is a little bit unusual pattern over there. back to you. >> thank you, mike. our top story this morning we're following breaking news out of campbell, more than a dozen cars were burned after a huge fire broke out in an apartment carport this happened behind homes in campbell on april way. >> where we find "today in the bay's" rick boone with some witnesses what they think started this fire. rick? >> reporter: well, yes, the investigators are still trying to figure that out exactly how this started but right now we have firefighters behind me putting out hot spots. let's get out of the way a little bit and try to see a little bit of smoke come out of some of these cars. 16 in total were burned in this carport that's connected to an apartment complex and along that issue, we also have cars that are parked illegally along a fire lane, this is one of them.

these cars incredibly close to a lot of homes, where my cameraman is standing and you see this fence i'm walking through right here, this is not normal. you're not supposed to do this because that fen was intact as of early this morning. so the firefighters say all the fire burnt down the fence, they had to use a special foam, that's not snow, to put out the fires. they're working on the hot spots right now, this is all that happened over the past few hours, as they just try to stay on the scene and do the best they can. the homeowners on the front line some way they are thankful to their family pet for making them up this morning to let them know all this was happening. >> tons of concerns about the cars, because they are right up on our fences and people barbecue out there so we're always a little nerve bus what could happen. >> reporter: back here live this morning, the firefighters will continue to check out the cars.

36 people died when the building went up in flames during a dance party back in december. prosecutors say almena and harris rented out spaces to tenants that they were responsible for people's safety. hearings for both ben set to start at 9:00 a.m. and you'll be able to get immediate updates on our website want and we'll cover the latest developments on our midday show at 11:00 this morning. new this morning, san francisco's anchor brewing company's future construction near at&t park is in limbo because the company's being sold. "the chronicle" ways the new owners have decided, rather not decided whether they'll move forward with plans to build a new production facility and a visitors center on pier 48 been anchor steam announced in 2013 it would expand from its location out to the pier. juan francisco lopez sanchez is expected in a san francisco courtroom later this morning. the undocumented immigrant is accused of shooting and killing kate steinley in 2015.

he says the shooting was accidental. today's hearing will most likely be a procedural one but the trial is expected to begin soon. both sides reportedly hit pause on a battle to design the north north bay ferry terminal in sausalito for golden gate ferries. renderings have been in the works for months but the city and the bridge district have been at odds over final design. the i.j. reports a truce will keep that dispute out of court for the next six months as both sides try to devise a workable design. breaking news overnight, kabul afghanistan a nato military convey has come under attack from a suicide bomber. georgian soldier was killed along with two afghan civilians. we're getting word some american serviceworkers were injured, but the attack, in the attack, but they're reportedly in stable condition. it's not clear who was behind that deadly attack. live to washington, d.c., this morning, where the russia

investigation may be heating up. that's a whole lot of laura there. special counsel robert mueller impaneled a jury to look into possible collusion. the news broke as president trump was addressing supporters at a rally in west virginia. we check in with tracie potts following it all for news washington, d.c., this morning. tracie? >> hi there, laura, good morning. good morning, everyone. we are tracking what information we can get about this grand jury, of course, by definition, the proceedings are secret, and a lot of the information about this investigation has been, too, but it does turn a page and it gives some indication that the investigation about russia and collusion may be broadening. >> are there any russians here tonight? >> reporter: president trump at a rally in west virginia last night as the "wall street journal" reports special counsel robert mueller put together a grand jury to look into possible collusion between russia and the trump campaign. >> the russia story is a total

fabrication. what the prosecutors should be looking at are hillary clinton's 33,000 deleted emails. >> reporter: nbc has not independently confirmed the existence of this grand jury but we have reported on two others, looking into former national security adviser michael flynn, and the president's former campaign chair paul manafort. what does it all mean? >> this is going to be a broader probe. this is very serious and i'm expected to keep doing this for a while. >> reporter: grand juries can subpoena witnesses and records to help the investigation. >> we have no reason to believe the president's under investigation here. >> reporter: a former senior intelligence official tells nbc the special counsel is looking at whether the president obstructed justice. >> there's a concern that he, frankly, may have a conflict of interest. >> reporter: on capitol hill democrats and republicans are working on a bill to prevent the president from firing mueller or stopping his investigation.

the president's outside legal counsel says the president's never approached them about that, they've never had a president about the president trying to shut down this investigation. back to you. >> one we'll continue to follow. tracie potts live from washington, thank you. president trump will take off to new jersey later to start a long vacation, 17 days at his golf club in bed minister, new jersey, about 1330-miles west of newark. before that he has a busy day ahead, starting at fema headquarte headquarters where official also brief him on this year's hurricane season. after that he'll have lunch with vice president mike pence. take a look at this, sudden downpour causing severe flash flooding in l.a. county. this is the scene yesterday as you saw cars quickly stuck in some of the floodwaters. drivers had to be rescued, plucked out of their cars. forecasters say temperatures dropped from 93 degrees to just 66 degrees in one hour. winds picked up, and so did that

rain. the good news is that no one was seriously injured. we had some bizarre weather in the bay area as well. this is slow motion video of lightning in discovery bay last night. we saw rain overnight, there could be spotty showers throughout the morning commute. forecaster vianey arana joins us with details. >> we have already seen those spotty showers all morning long and up until about an hour ago stockton was still seeing lightning. you can tell during the doppler radar we've seen the lightning clear out. we're still seeing residual moisture in santa rosa and also up in the santa cruz mountains as well. for the most part the majority of the mois tour moisture is p off. as this continues to push off we can expect to keep the clouds in the forecast. here's a quick check of today's highs. santa rosa will be climbing to about 85 degrees. san jose 87. livermore 92, antioch and concord will once again be some of the warmer spots for today and we can expect to see a bit of a cooldown over the next seven days by saturday and

sunday in san francisco, we'll drop right back down into those 60s and inland spots we'll stay in the 90s for the weekend but by monday it looks like we have some 80s in the forecast. mike? >> all right, vianey. folks a big look at the bay no real issues as far as any major slowing. . i take you toward even 580, caltran commute word of a spinout a few minutes ago. everything is out of the lanes but slicker possibility because of the light rain so i want to let you know that's south there, a spinout. the bay bridge toll plaza as well, i told you i'd talk about the unusual pattern. it's not unusual for a friday, left lanes that are easier going than the rest of the backup, and the fast track lanes of course are slower than the cash lanes. that's usual for a friday. unusual for the rest of the week. back to you. >> thank you, mike. up next, news of every parent or grandparent needs to hear, family members really. the alarming rise in suicides among teenaged girls and the warning signs you should be on the lookout for.

good morning, it is 6:14. it was in the last ten minutes san francisco has caught a break from the showers. we're seeing the majority of this rain moving off to the coast now, and into the water, which means, yes, we are starting to clear out just in time for the late morning.

now we can expect to see some warmer temps today but a cooldown is on the way. >> look at that, the friday treat, highway 37 does slow a lit but lighter out of vallejo in toward novato. the rest of the north bay moves well. we'll talk about the south bay coming up. >> all right, we'll look forward to that, thank you very much. quarter after 6:00 right now. new study shows a steep increase in suicides among young teenaged girls. the national center for health statistics finds the number of self-inflicted deaths for girls aged 15 through 19 reached a 40-year high in 2015. and the rate for those girls between 2007 and 2015 doubled. the rates for boys that same age over the same period rose by 31%. on the "today" show this morning, one expert talked about the increase in how some believe it may be tied to the use of smartphones. matt lauer then asked if parents

cnbc world headquarters for all of that. good morning. >> good morning, scott, laura. the tweet is all about the jobs report. wall street reacting positively to the jobs numbers. it looks like we created 209,000 jobs in the month of july, and a lot of that came from restaurants and also health care. we just got those numbers in the past hour or so ahead of this opening bell, just about 13 minutes away. stock futures are positive, so we are seeing some good signs here in the markets overall. linkedin has rolled out a new feature, guys, to help promote and really help people find mentors. this service identifies potential mentors in various kinds of jobs and sectors and helps them match up with people looking for that kind of help and that kind of advice. this service from linkedin is free, but right now, it's only available in san francisco and australia, so if you're a bay area base, it's probably good for you guys. amazon's alexia have a new set of skills. the digital assistant can play

music from amazon's library based on your specific activities. so they range from things like meditation and falling asleep to even working out and getting pumped. if you're a user, you're also going to be able to ask for specific genres of music so if you like working out to beethoven versus taylor swift or katy perry, hey alexia, play classical music for running and it gives you that kind of a music play list. so i don't know about you guys but i really am one of those people who likes maybe working out to music. i should probably work out more than i should. i just don't know if i could do it to mozart, strauss or beethov beethoven. >> got to be the right beat. for clarity there, you pick the music, not alexia, judging by what you're doing. it's like big brother watching you. >> well i'm not sure -- yes, it could be. it's a little bit but that's always the concern. how much are you feeding this. if you keep saying alexia for everything, alexia and amazon is going to know a lot about you and what your proclivities are. i'm not sure exactly how

the north bay 65, but with this monsoonal moisture we like to say once the rain makes its exit we can expect sunshine. not so much today. futurecast right now showing the residual moisture should be clearing out and by 7:30 through the early afternoon, you notice it leaves behind plenty of cloud cover, sticking around through tonight and into tomorrow morning, more than likely as well, with i means you can expect to see some fog along the coast, and yes, we will be getting a lot sunnier tomorrow. today's forecast will be climbing into the 80s and 90s for livermore, 92. san francisco climbing into the 70s. mike, how are we doing so far? >> we're doing friday on the roads, smooth flow of traffic, mostly green and the green that was highlighted for the damper roadways shall that's kind of clearing up so that's good stuff. we are still following this, the closure for brokaw the on-ramp at northbound 880 because of a crash there activity and we're tracking that. meanwhile we also have the closure for south 87 to 280 that overnight roadwork should clear up any second now, folks.

rain and hot weather as we head into the weekend. right now at 6:30 we are tracking some rare summer rain and certainly hot weather as we head into the weekend. taking a live look outside downtown san jose, a nice start to our friday morning.

thanks for also starting it out with us. good morning to you. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew in for sam brock. let's get a check of your weather with vianey. happy friday. >> happy friday indeed. we're tracking the exit of the monsoonal moisture in the overnight hours that brought lightning to some areas. if you have any shots of that please feel free to send them to us, twitter, facebook, instagram, we have them all. the doppler radar is showing a lot of the moisture pushing off to the west, and we can expect to still see occasional pop-up shower or two along the peninsula but it's going to be very light rain, the majority of that rain will make its exit leaving behind a lot of those humid conditions, of course the cloudiness is expected for today's forecast and it's not going anywhere throughout the afternoon. 68 degrees for the peninsula, south bay 75. tri valley 76 degrees and in san francisco 65, with those on and off again showers but have no fear, that rain should be making a pause by about 7:00 a.m.

mike? >> we're looking at an easy drive around the bay but we still have the south bay with a few issues. we'll zoom down here. no real slowing aside from the bay bridge toll plaza but the closure for the onramp at brokaw road. couple more minutes until they're able to pull that car off to the side of the roadways. no major injuries and no slowing. closure 87 south to 280 northbound going on for a couple more seconds. they should have the crew cleared as well and other incident marked off the fire going on off of hamilton road, so we're going to track that guys and send it back to you for the latest. >> all right, thank you very much. back to our breaking news in the south bay this morning, more than a dozen cars are damaged after a fire tore through a carport in campbell overnight. it's going on near april way, close to the intersection of hamilton and baskham. rick boone is live with the jaf aftermath and tell us new information you received within the last few minutes, rick. >> reporter: yes, this all started here in campbell.

this is between april way and dover way, off east hamilton and campbell. this car right here behind me, you see that real quick. according to witnesses and also investigators who are here on the scene they're saying this was the first car that caught fire in this carport that's connected to the apartment complex. also in the back part of that carport we can open up the shot just a little bit, behind those cars that's a lot of storage. so not only did these cars, are they destroyed, 16 in total, also storage units were destroyed. this connected to an apartment complex and on the other side here, right on to this side we have a bunch of houses, on that side and that's a residence where awoken around 2:15, one family they had their family dog that basically started to hear some commotion in the backyard. got them up, started barking and then they saw all these flames and the resident tells me that this was a scary sight to wake up to early in the morning. >> tons of concerns about the

>> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live at dolores park with what police are saying about potential suspects. >> reporter: good morning to you. they are still searching for those suspects but they tell us they plan to increase security presence around the shooting that took place yesterday essentially in broad daylight. an hour or so ago we saw two patrol cars. the shooting took place near this footbridge at the park. we'll show you footage from the scene yesterday, and according to sfpd three people were shot at the park yesterday and those victims are two men and one minor. all of them sent to sf general for their injuries, with one of them facing life-threatening injuries. the motive of this shooting is unclear but a witness told nbc bay area as i mentioned a group of five to six people wearing banda in as approached a group on the footbridge at the park i shoe showed you and one of the people

opened fire on the victims. here is what other park goers had to say about what took place yesterday. >> i withent to make sure everything was okay and mediate and make sure to be the one to calm everyone down, no. i hear they're strapped. gun raised to me. >> all of a sudden i heard six gunshots and i see everybody running down the hill so i just took cover and ran for the bathroom. >> reporter: witnesses say this armed group ran off and possibly jumped into a toyota corolla. of course this is all under investigation. if you have any information to help out with this case, contact sfpd. we're live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thanks. firefighters in the oakland and berkeley hills keeping a close eye on thunder and lightning that swept through the region overnight. >> this morning the focus returns to putting out the hot spots. here are the latest numbers. the 28 20-ac0-acre fire is 50% contained, pretty much surrounded. the search snz forcontinues for

cause. the fire started on university property. they're investigating it as a possible arson but oakland fire says cal fire is in charge, and that agency is not talking arson at this point. here's melinda drayton from oakland fire. >> if it's determined to be arson they take a certain action. if it's determined to be negligent they take one action. >> reporter: as of right now? >> it's an open investigation. >> meanwhile oakland police say a man involved in a crash who brandished a gun at a driver right near the fire scene wednesday morning has been arrested but they've not been able to connect him to the fire. it is 6:37. new this morning, health leaders are reportedly recommending keeping caution signs posted along the russian river. warning of toxic blue-blegreen algae. the sign went up along five beaches after traces of toxin were discovered. health experts say the amount in each case was minimal, at least

80 times less than the threshold requiring to be closed. exposure to blue-green algae can be quite harmful especially for dogs. about a month ago a regional warning went out covering the north and east bay. that followed the death of two dogs that went swimming in a napa pond. we looked further back and found four bay area dog deaths tied to toxic algae in 2015 when drought conditions created higher potential dangers. so far at least two bay area waterways have been closed to swimmer this is summer due to the action to i algae, that's lake telascal in oakland and quarry lakes in fremont. discovery bay, one location is considered off limits. warning signs are posted in several other locations. so be on the lookout. all right, we're looking at the roadways looking out for anything for you. this is what we found. our live camera san mateo bridge, that vehicle in the service lane here so it's out of the lanes of traffic, but

county fair later today. we can expect to see peeks of sunshine about 1:00, 82 degrees and of course county fair does take place through the weekend but today we'll end at about 11:00 p.m. and topping out into those upper 80s in some spots and yes, 90s for some inland areas for today, and then through the weekend also expect to see some much nicer weather, especially when it comes to the sunshine. this weekend of course the fremont festival at the yards if i'm not mistaken i heard mike inouye say he would be there, so say hello to him. there will be a booth, free admission and look at the temperatures in the 80s. i think it will be perfect weather, a nice ice cream cone if they have those out there. i can always go for an ice cream cone rain or shine. quick summary what you can expect on saturday, waking up to the 60s in the bay, 70s in inland spots and tomorrow we will be warming up into the 90s by about 3:00 but then into the evening hours it starts to cool off nicely and we kind of clear out of the clouds by sunday early morning we start in the 50s for the bay. 60s for inland spots and if you notice our temperature trend

we'll show you what else is going on, coming up. just in, mike, we're learning more about what police are describing as an unprovokeed atack on a barth train. man was sitting around a train car around 7:30 last night when another man hit him in the head with some sort of metal object. this happened at the bay fair station in san leandro. the man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and police are searching for that suspect. we're also learning more about the man who was shot and killed by richmond police officers earlier this week. jeff barboa was a doctoral student of psychology and worked with berkeley's mental health crisis team. >> the robbery happened at all star donuts two weeks ago. he walked in and took cash out of the register. the store owner said he looked totally normal. >> turned it around after he dropped it and "what you want to fight? i got a gun. i got a knife!" >> officers spotted barboa's star on wednesday and that led to a chase.

sfers shot and killed him, in richmond. witnesses said he was ignoring a machete and ignored commands to drop it. he was going through a stressful time at home. uber headed back to court today. the ride share company is accused of not paying a $25 million settlement it reached with the counties of san francisco and los angeles. uber was facing allegations the company misled and overcharged customers. the counties sued uber in 2014 and both sides settled, but uber is now accused of not paying up. so the counties are seeking additional damages. new this morning, uber admits it knowingly rented faulty vehicles that were prone to catch fire to drivers in singapore. the company bought 1,000 of those cars and rented them out. uber took action after one of the cars accidentally caught fire. only the driver was in the car and luckily was not hurt. 49ers fans this weekend have their first chance to see the team in person. the niners holding an open

practice where you can see for yourself at levi stadium tomorrow that starts at 10:00 a.m. tickets are $5. the upshot there may be heavier traffic around the stadium, especially for a weekend morning. santa clara police warn there could be delays along highway 101, 880 and 237. that practice runs through 2:00 in the afternoon. a follow-up this morning, caltrain moving forward with plans to increase fares and parking fees. the board of directors approved the changes yesterday. caltrain adult zone fare also increase by 25 cents, starting october 1st. at the same time monthly parking price also go from $55 to $82.50. go pass also increase from $190 to $237.50, starting in the new year. those pass also get even more expensive, $285, at the beginning of 2019. and there will no longer be a

devour it. if you're headed outside notice it's cloudy and the doppler radar is showing a decent amount of moisture sitting off to the east and that may be sparking up a few nor spotty showers here and there in san francisco and along the next couple of hours. looking at futurecast ahead at about 8:30 a.m. we have a little bit of this moisture lingering, and as i mentioned, that may spark up a few on and off again showers, but it will clear by midafternoon. actually mid morning more rather. 9:00 a.m. a couple of pop-up showers here and there but it's moving off nicely to the coast and that will make way for an overall nice friday. some cloud cover definitely in the forecast. expect to see peeks of sunshine, i'm not going to call it a sunny day because it will be pretty overcast in general. futurecast right now is keeping those cloudy conditions through tonight and into tomorrow, but right now, if you notice we're in the 60s and the 70s across the bay area. 68 for the peninsula, 75 for the south bay.

san francisco 65, and i'm keeping the showers in there because it looks like we may still have a few pop-up showers but i will remove those showers by the mid morning. the temperature trend does show a nice climb in temperatures, so if you're just now getting up and getting ready to head out, i think a nice hoodie will be a good play for today and of course some jeans. you're going to need to shed the hoodie later today but the temps climb in the 80s and 90s in inland spots before we see a cooldown monday. livermore a high of 92. san jose 87. san francisco will be climbing into the 70s and the north bay will also be climbing into the mid 80s and even some low 90s in some spots. over the next seven days i want to put your attention toward this. we have the monsoon moisture that krette crept in overnight. stockton was getting lightning shows until an hour and a half ago. saturday and sunday it cools down a bit in san francisco and nothing changes over the next several days so we start off with a nice pattern. look at the inland spots and cooling trend. by saturday 9 degrees, sunday 90 and 87 as we head into monday,

. . welcome back on this friday before you head out the door we have your top stories "today in the bay." >> we begin with new details on that campbell carport fire we've been following since we came on air. at 4:30 this morning, take a look at what is left. these are live pictures from the scene. what is left of a lot of cars there. firefighters actually in the last few minutes confirm with us they've been investigating this

as suspicious. 16 cars in total were destroyed or damaged as an overnight fire just tore through that carport. it's very close to the intersection of hamilton and baskham on april. no structures were damaged other than the overhang of the carport. no one was hurt. a live look at san francisco's dolores park, that is where police plan to increase patrols following a shooting in broad daylight that injured three. that shooting happened yesterday afternoon, one of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries. investigators are trying to determine if those victims were targeted deliberately. witnesses seem to think so. officers plan to increase patrols at least through the weekend. the two men facing charges in the deadly oakland warehouse fire are due back in court today. 47-year-old derek almena and 27-year-old max harris are facing involuntary manslaughter charges. the almeida county d.a. say the two men turned the building into
