lighting up the night sky over dubai. the massive fire starting on the 63rd floor of the 86-story apartment building. its name, torch tower. the fire broke out around 1:00 a.m., of the 1,100-foot skyscrap skyscraper. as residents began running for their lives, burning debris could be seen crashing to the ground. firefighters battling the blaze. this is the same tower that was devastated in 2013. the building's cladding, made of aluminum panels with combustible cores helped accelerate the flames. that cladding, similar in a material used in the grenfell tower in west london, and blamed for that blaze in june. as officials investigate how the

massive skyscraper caught fire, not once, but twice, residents are grateful to have gotten out alive. and this morning, the dubai media office says firefighters from four stations helped all of the residents evacuate. no one from the building or on the ground was hurt. that cladding has been banned for new builds in dubai. older buildings like the torch tower, are supposed to replace it. >> that could have been so much worse. there is no reaction to the prison sentence given to the massachusetts woman convicted of involuntary manslaughter for using text messages to urge her boyfriend to take his only life. nbc's morgan radford has the latest there. good morning, morgan. >> reporter: hoda, this morning, michelle carter wakes up a free woman as her case goes through the appeals process. some members of the victim's family says the 15-month

mandatory prison sentence she received yesterday was too light. but the prosecutors who fought to put her behind bars say they are happy and this is justice. this morning, outrage over the sentencing of michelle carter. the 20-year-old given a 2 1/2-year term for involuntary manslaughter, after urging her girlfriend, conrad roy, to commit suicide. but much of her sentence will be suspend suspended, ordered to serve just 15 months in prison. she remains free, pending an appeal. state prosecutors say justice has been served. are you happy? is there anything you would have done differently? >> no. michelle carter was convicted for the death of conrad roy. we are thankful for the ruling. >> reporter: some members of the victim's family were furious. you wanted to see her -- >> in cuffs. she's going to the prom. going to disney world. i don't think there's justice. >> reporter: the judge

explained, at the time of the crime, carter was 167 and capable of rehabilitation. >> children before the court charged with crimes are to be treated as children. >> reporter: the ruling, capping a day where emotions ran high, as family members took the stand. >> not a day goes by without him being my first thought waking up and my last thought going to bed. >> reporter: court documents saw carter, via text message, was encouraging him to take his own life. she wrote, you just need to do it, conrad. on july 13th, 2013, roy sat in this parking lot and filled his grandfather's pickup truck with kr carbon monoxide. >> probation is appropriate. >> the state says this is not

in the headlines but not for music. taylor swift is going to court next week, over her allegations that a deejay touched her inappropriately as they posed for a photo. joe fryer has the latest on that. >> reporter: the civil trial that starts monday, pits taylor swift against david mueller. swift says he groped her and mueller says that's not true. and this morning, court documents are giving us a preview of what's to come at the trial. for taylor swift, this will be a new stage. the 27-year-old pop star is expected to testify in a federal courtroom. the case stems from a 2013 incident. swift says before a concert in denver, she was groped by radio host david mueller while posing for a picture. swift will testify that mueller put his hand under her dress and grabbed her bare behind. she never reported this incident to police.

but they did tell the station. the station fired mueller two days later. in 2015, mueller filed a lawsuit against swift and members of her team, claiming they falsely accused him of touching the music star. he defended himself in a radio interview last november. >> my hand was never under her skirt. i never grabbed her. >> reporter: swift countersued, claiming assault and battery. according to court documents, swift is certain what mueller did. and she has never been so sure of anything in her life. during the trial, testimony is expected from swift's mother, manager, personal bodyguard and photographer who took a photo capturing the alleged assault. the courthouse is bracing for huge crowds. but 32 seats will be for the public. those granted on a first come/first serve basis.

national investigative correspondent jeff rossen has more. jeff, good morning to you. >> reporter: new cases just this week of stores held up with customers inside. and we've seen the videos, right? some suspect walking into a convenient store, a coffee shop, a gas station. and a customer comes from behind and attacks the suspect. it's brave. is it what you're supposed to do? this morning, the advice from law enforcement officials and including what we should all start doing today in every store we visit. suspects holding up stores. scared customers caught in the crosshairs. running for their lives. in fresno, this suspect trying to rob a starbucks. what he doesn't see, this customer behind him, about to spring into action, hitting him over the head with a chair and wrestling him to the ground. he stopped the robbery and everyone survived.
