heat. >> the temperatures are not very normal for this time of year. that was a sight to see. i don't know if it was a pleasant one for some folks, but hey, at least we are expecting much better conditions this weekend. the good news is it didn't rain too much yesterday. now, this morning, we are still waking up to some fairley overcast skies. we're seeing lowe low clouds in san francisco. we're seeing patchy fog along the coast. in the south bay at 66, we've kind of seen a weird kind of shift in those temperatures. we've seen them go up, we've seen them drop overnight and we've seen them go up again. and we'll see that kind of again today. yesterday we started off in the 70s in some spots and today we're starting off in the 60s and 50s. so it's still going to be a fairley hot day by about 12:00, we will be in the 80s already for san jose, but i do have some good news. even though we are expecting some warmer conditions today and then we'll be climbing into the 70s again in stran, we're going

to slowly start dropping in terms of those temperatures, even into tomorrow. so i'll have a closer look at that nice cooling trend that's on the way coming up in about 15 minutes. >> good news on the way. thanks. first this morning, two men wanted in connection with a murder in chicago turn themselves in here in the bay area. the nationwide manhunt for this man, windham laytham and another man would is an oxford university employee ended last night. but this morning, many questions remain about how and why the pair fled here to the bay area. 42-year-old latham and 56-year-old andrew warren have been on the run from chicago police since last week. investigators say they're the prime suspects in the murder of trenton cornell duranlo, a young hairstylist. he was found stabbed to death last week in latham's apartment. the pair were seen leaving an

apartment building after just arriving to the u.s. for the first time. they are being held at the main jail in oakland until they're sent back to chicago to appear before a judge. we tweeted about these high profile arrests the moment the news broke last night. be sure to follow us tore breaking and developing news. our twitter handle is @nbcbayarea. this morning, a salvage crew is continuing to try and find a boat that sank near alcatraz. ten people were on that boat. they all were rescued by another boat passing by. we have the dramatic rescue and the celebration afterwards. >> get them on. get them on now.. >> that's the voice of alcatraz clipper captain eric anderson. >> to pull them off was just a couple minutes. it took longer to get over to the vessel. >> he and his crew are being hailed as heros for coming to the rescue of a private boat that ran aground on a rock formation called little

alcatraz. it's usually only seen at low tide. as you can see in the video shot by a french canadian tourist, the boat was quickly sinking. >> i looked at the side of the boat and noticed their boat was going down pretty quick. >> the rescue has already become a highlight of tonight's alcatraz tour. >> i wish i would have been there to see those guys jump in and see them. i don't know how that boat didn't know the rock was there. it's pretty known that rock is known as famous little alcatraz. >> they were fine. they were all wearing life jackets. they hadn't gotten wet at that time. everything was perfect. once all ten people aboard the sinking boat were aboard the ferry, the tourists who were on their way back to shore from the alcatraz tour erupted into applause. the empty boat then floated off into the darkness and sank. nbc bay area news. now to a developing story in san francisco. a stabbing near castro and market streets. the sfpd night watch tweeted

this photo last night. police haven't released many details, but we do know the victim is expected to be okay. you can expect a bigger police presence this weekend at deloress park. plenty of sfpd officers will be there on bikes and motorcycles following thursday's triple shooting. . police now say it was gang related. a man who lived near deloris park herd the shots that sent three people to the hospital, including an innocent bystander. i heard pop, pop, pop, pop. one of my neighbors was a victim. he's been discharged so i'm really happy to hear that. >> the gunman and his friends were wearing red t-shirts and had their faces completely covered. no arrests have been made. a man who was shot by police earlier this year and accused them of using excessive force against him is once again in police custody. this body cam video from january shows a police confrontation with sean moore. he recently filed a civil claim

against the city of san francisco accusing police of excessive force during this encounter over a restraining order. during that encounter, he was shot by police after refusing to follow their orders and fighting with officers. a judge ruled that police overstepped their authority in that case. well, then yesterday morning police returned to moore's home to investigate a possible hate crime attack. he's accused of punching a 16-year-old in the face while yelling racial slurs. he was arrested without incident. moore's family says he's mentally ill and not receiving the care he needs. neighbors say his case is an example of a failed mental health system. >> federally and all the way down, resources have not been distributed the right way. so it is unfortunately hard for people to have the money to invest in mental health. >> moore is booked on charges that include felony assault with hate crime enhancements. his bail is set at $250,000. we have new details about that fire near yosemite last

month. investigators now say that guns were the cause of the fire. authorities say some sort of firearms sparked the blaze. where and when those guns were used, however, remains under investigation. the sheriff's deputies are offering a $2,000 reward for any information. more than 81,000 acres were burned. s 131 structures were destroyed. we also have an update on the oakland hills fire that started wednesday morning. this morning, firefighters say it is 90% contained. this is in the grizzly peak area above uc berkeley. no homes nor structures were damaged. it is 7:07. we have much more ahead on the bay. coming up, an alert passenger on a flight to san jose landed this woman in jail, but she didn't stay there. the mistake that led to this suspected child molester being released by accident. plus, a plane packed full of passengers catches fire before the takeoff.

would i elcome back. taking a live look outside, a cloudy skies over san jose from communications hill. the similar scene to that gloomy, humid scene that we saw yesterday. we'll get a slight cooldown today. san jose will see temperatures around 87. new video of an american airlines flight, half of it engulfed in flames in chicago. look at that. the plane was taking off last october when a part of the plane blew apart and receivered the line. the plane data recorder shows had been plane been airborne, the likely result would have been a fiery crash. all 161 passengers were evacuated safely. the woman involved in a child sex bous case is under b arrest once again just three days after being released from

accident by accident. she's one of the suspects in a texting conversation spotted by an alert passenger on a flight to the bay area. >> 50-year-old gayle burnworth may have thought she was free. investigators say she was texting back and forth with this man, 56-year-old michael keller as he sat on a night from seattle to san jose on monday. an alert passenger says she noticed the disturbing messages. >> the conversations were very particular in regard the to sex acts that were to be performed on a child, on children. the passenger reported it to southwest airlines staff who called ahead to san jose police and keller was arrested. workers at the union city branch at the hurton glass company was shocked saying he was flying here to be the new location manager. not any more. gayle was arrested with what they call two young victims. she was released last night from a tacoma jail because the state

outside, you clody skies over oakland. yesterday, gloomy. but the humidity will die down and we won't see temperatures quite as hot as yesterday. martin screlli, most well known for sparking outrage after raising the cost of an aids drug by 5,000%, this trial had two different yesterday. yesterday, he was found guilty on three of eight counts of conspiracy and fraud. >> this was a witch-hunt. at the end of the day, we've been acquitted of most of the important charges in this case. >> prosecutors says he ran a ponzi scheme lie to go investors and stealing from his pharma company at the time of his arrest.

shkreli faces 20 years in prison. is uber short changing san francisco and l.a.? well, prosecutors for both counties say uber owes $15 million for violating a prior legal settlement. just yesterday, they squared off before a judge in had san francisco. this all stems from a case that settled last year when uber had already paid the two counties $10 million. in that settlement, uber also agreed to fix violations, including misleading advertising on driver and airport fees. now the district attorney's office says uber did not fully comply. >> uber was required to put up geofences around those airports preventing drivers from taking people there. because of the very large numbers, it tells us those geofences aren't working, they're down or there's other problems with what uber is doing. >> if the judge does find them guilty, uber would have to pay an additional $15 million to

l.a. county. the white house is asking for help from silicone valley. jared kushner is reaching out to local tech companies. he's called apple, fwogoogle an oracle among others. apple insider reports the white house is considering have engineers serve so-called tours of duty to help the federal government. well with, the people have spoken and a new survey shows self-driving technology is getting a thumbs up. the survey shows half the people in the had u.s. want the the technology. most features include blind spot detection and self-braking. a lot of people are still a bit hesitant. i am one of them. >> i think the -- i do like the blind spot detector. i think that's important. and yeah, the brakes. >> the braking. but then i think it will give people more reason to text while

they drive because they think the car will take control. i have a baby. i want people to be safe on the road. >> that's true. >> yesterday was so weird. >> it was. it was weird. >> and you say it will get better today. >> it's going to get better, which is great. of course, we still have that monsoon moisture that left behind some of that cloud cover. and we can expect to see some offshore -- if you look, this is within the past two hours on our doppler radar. offshore, we're still seeing some lightning sdriex and that's from yesterday's storm. so yes, we still see some of that monsoon moisture, but it's finally away from the bay area. but we can expect to see some of those cooler temps because we've got a nice marine layer building over the area. but yes, these impressive lightning strikes will clear out in the weekend. and then if we zoom into the bay area, we noticed it's nice and calm out there. we have a chance of seeing a few sparked up thunderstorms yesterday, but now it looks like we are in store for more

sunshine. now, 68 degrees along the peninsula right now. south bay, 66. we are slightly cooler already than what we were yesterday, but it's still going to be a fairley hot weekend. .san francisco will keep the cloudy skies through the midafternoon and today's highs, we're still in the upper 80s for the south bay. expect a high of 87 for san jose. in the 90s, morgan hill, 89 degrees. if we take it over to the east bay, we've got a combination of a little bit of everything. 70s, 80s and 90s. a high had of about 75 for oakland today. hayward, 82. inside inland spots like antioch and concord, 81 and 82 degrees. the south bay will clear out nicely throughout the day. it should clear out even more by tomorrow. so i think sunday is probably going to be the best bay to be

outdoors. san francisco, 66. mission 69. but in stran, we will be climbing in some spots along the way into the 70s. now, microclimate forecast for today in the north bay, 83. santa rosa, 82. mill valley at 81. now let's talk about that cooling trend that i've been mentioning now. we do have that nice marine layer that's building and it is expected to start building even more by tomorrow. 65 degrees for san francisco. so we'll start noticing more of a seasonable trend in the forecast and that's going to keep san francisco right back down to more normal temperatures. we warm up again towards the later part of the week. inland, you will notice more spots. we will go from the about 92 today into 90s tomorrow. monday and into tuesday, we start dropping down into the 80s. that's all thanks to that good marine layer that will be keeping us even nice and breezy along the coast. so i think this is overall going to be a fairley decent week

last november, san francisco san francisco mayor edly was invited to the white house to discuss homelessness, but he wasn't able to attend. in his place, he sent the man we're about to eat. while he's not a politician, he had all the right experience. this is this morning's bay area proud. >> at the intersection of

good saturday morning. it is 7:29. here is a live look outside at the skies over san jose.. the sun is shining. we have some cloud cover there. will it be another hot and humid day like we saw yesterday? thanks so much for joining us. we have a look at your microclimate forecast. we've both lived in boston at one point. >> we have. >> it reminded me of the east coast yesterday. >> i think i'm still trying to get over that. but i know for a fact that today is going to be a bit interesting, too. we've got that marine layer building over the san francisco and, of course, along the peninsula. in areas like san jose, we're still seeing high clouds and that's bringing still that warmer air mass. i want to show you the doppler radar so you can see what it looks like. in the past two hours, we're

seeing some lightning strikes just offshore and we have this building low pressure system that may spark up a few showers in areas like the north bay overnight into sunday. we're going to keep a close lie on that. if i school in over the bay area, you notice just a few showers offshore. that deepening marine layer, at about a thousand feet. ocean beach, 60 degrees. san jose, 66. yesterday we had san jose at 66 during the 35 o'clock a.m. hour. we're slightly trending cooler in some spots, but for some inland areas where that warm air mass is still sitting over the area, it's still expected to be fairley hot today in areas like concord at 90 degrees, antioch, 92. livermore, 91. i'll have a closer look at what you can expect coming up at about 7:45. >> we'll stay tuned for that. thanks. two men wanted for murder in chicago turned themselves in in the bay area.. the nationwide hunt for windham

days after the president complained that sessions was being weak on the issue. and washington continues to buzz about the grand jury convened by special counsel robert mueller. at a rally on thursday night, the president mocked the russia investigation as fake news and his advisers claim it's a non-issue. >> there's a complete disconnect between what americans are telling us is important to them and what they're being told by the media is important to them. >> more about those leak investigations, one source tells nbc news there are currently dozens of open leak cases. a search and rescue operation is under way for three missing u.s. marines after their helicopter crashed off the coast of australia. the marine corps said 23 of the 26 personnel aboard the mv22 osprey have been rescued. the navy tweeted out this video of a practice drill involving an mb 22 osprey off the coast of australia. but it's not clear whether the aircraft seen here was the one

involved in the crash. u.s. vessels and aircraft are taking part in the rescue operation for those three marines. the movement is growing. school starts in about a week and one of the largest school districts in california says it is putting all gender bathrooms at every one of its schools. this movement gant at lincoln high school in the south bay more than a year ago. >> you can go in and check it out. i don't think there's anybody in there. >> since the all gender troops went you up, students say there have been no issue. >> i go into the all againer bathroom. every time i go in there, i always pass by boys or girls, too. it's sort of as it's always been happening. >> a sign on every bathroom alert students to text to alert administration for any inappropriate behavior. >> the principal says so far there have been zero complaints.

now the district says it's time for every one of their schools to follow lincoln's leads. the goal is to have gender neutral bathrooms on every campus by the end of the year. ken yager has been a champion of the lgbt community and he applauds the move. >> i just hope all school districts would be as open as san jose unified is making sure they have the gender neutral bathrooms for students to use. >> the only cause for the change is signage. no remodeling is needed for the all gender rest rooms. and lincoln has still has some boys only and girls only facilities. >> the principal tells me key to success here is for dialogue, dialogue with the students and with their parents. >> a few other school districts in california have made it a priority to have all gender bathrooms in their schools. in the bay area, that includes san francisco and berkeley unified school districts. statewide, los angeles and san diego also have gender neutral

it's 7: 4/3. yes, we're still waking up to some of that cloud cover been look at these high clouds over walnut creek. all along this area, it is 63 degrees right now. so we're already slightly cooler than what we've been waking up to the past couple of days. of course, you remember yesterday was very humid. we had that monsoonal moisture move in thursday night into friday morning. we can actually still see some

of that moisture kind of left over here in the east and if you look just offshore, we're seeing some lightning and some thunder just off in the water, which means yes, we do still have the chance of seeing a few of those spark of showers in the north bay. and that's because we still got this kind of system that's building off in the north and that could bring the chance of seeing some spotty showers for the north bay. and then even acongress the peninsula, we could catch drizzle into tonight and tomorrow morning. accurate temperatures, ocean beach, 60. bodega bay, 58. water temperatures are fairley seasonable. and in san jose right now, 66 degrees. so we're in the 50s and 60s all across the board, but we can expect to still warm up. so even though we've got that building marine layer along the coast, that's going to keep san francisco cooler than yesterday. yesterday we topped out in the 70s. further inland, we still have some of that warm air mass. and that's what's going to still

bump up those temperatures into the 90s for areas like concord, antioch, and even down in the south bay area like san jose, expect to hit a high of about 8 degrees. although yesterday, we weren't very hot. it was, i think, about 84. but, again, compared with how we usually are around this time of year, when you paired that up with that moisture yesterday, that's what gave it that humid, sticky, tropical feel. i have a lot of folks who were telling me that they had to stay inside. i know our producer, rick, kiera said they were in search of that a/c yesterday and that's bringing up some electricity bills. 63 in the bay area. 72 for inland spots. we will warm up into it 80s by 3:00. we're still seeing that warm air mass into some of the interior valleys and that's going to warm up up into the 90s. for sunday, we're expecting to see sunnier conditions. we're keeping that cloud cover

a few months antibiotic ago, he was on top of the world. part of the legendary cal rugby team playing in the national championship game. but his life changed in an instant. he was paralyzed during that game. this is a story that's made national headlines and now robert payol is sharing his story with us. >> i think we're at 80. >> with the face of a warrior, robert paylor works to retrain

his legs. every step is a struggle. yet robert never quits. >> i'm not going to accept this as something i'm going to sit at. i'm going to fight tooth and nail to get out of this pit and get up. >> robert is recovering from what's known as an incomplete spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed. it happened in may in a match and now for the first time the cal rugby player is talking about what happened. >> an opposing player came from the side, which you're not supposed to do and wrapped his arm over my head in a headlock and was pinning my chin to my chest. so he collapsed and he brought me to the ground and just rode me all the way down. and immediately, i was pins and needles everywhere. >> now usa rugby is investigating accusations

robert's injury is a result of illegal play. >> do you have any angry toward the other player that caused the accident? >> no, no, i'm not angry. i think what's in the past is in the past and if i'm going to dwell on thatting and point fingers i'm not going to go anywhere. >> which is why craig transferred here to a world reno renown spinal cord facility. robert spends eight hours a day working to retrain his body with the ultimate goal of regaining his independence. that includes relearning how to do daily tasks most of us take for granted. in his new reality, simply getting into bed is challenging. but robert's strength and stamina as an elite athlete are helped. >> there we go. >> after an intense hour, it's
