good sunday morning. it is 7:00. here's a live look outside from communications hill towards san jose. you have some cloud cover there. v vianey arana says the sun is on the way. we really appreciate you joining us. i'm kira klapper in for vicky nguyen. look who it is, vianey arana, with a check of our micro climate forecast. you did tell me it would be even a little cooler today than yesterday so that's nice. >> that marine layer, even though it's keeping us nice and foggy, it it will keep the coast cool. there are upsides to seeing some of that fog in the morning hours but, yes, kira, we do have more sunshine on tap. 68 degrees for the peninsula. the south bay, 65. in san francisco a nice cloudy 58 degrees. 60 degrees for the east bay. take a look at this live doppler radar showing the fog that's

deepening especially along the coastline, really hugging the coastline. that's what's carrying the hazy skies into areas like the east bay and the south bay. so it's becoming widespread not just stick iing to the coast bu yes, we are expected to be slightly cooler today. if you notice the temperature trend for san francisco yesterday we were expected to climb into the 70s. today we will be sticking into the upper 60s for the majority of the day but we will get breaks of sunshine with a little bit better conditions. it might be breezy along the coast. just keep that in mind. san jose right now at 65 degrees and expect to see that sunshine break by about 10:00 a.m. climbing into the upper 70s be and 80s for today's forecast. we definitely have a gray day ahead. coming up in just a bit i will give you an inside look at the he last day of the santa clara county fair. you will want to know your temperature trend for that. 245that's coming up in 15 minut. this morning an a's player is apologizing and asking for forgiveness after using a gay slur against a fan. now he's been suspended for two

games. this all happened during the eighth inning of friday night's game in anaheim. according to witnesses matt joyce was walking to the dugout and shouted the slur at the fan challenging him to a fight. joyce has since admitted to what he said and apologized both on camera and in a seven-part tweet. we have more from him right here. >> there's no good excuse for that kind of language to be said or ever used. i hope the people out there can find it in their heart to forgive me. >> the a's hosted an lbgtq pride night every season. the team has release d a statement. in part it reads, we pride ourselves on being inclusive and expect our entire organization to live up to higher standards. we appreciate that matt is contrite about his conduct and know he will learn from this incident. you can see how bay area fans are reacting to matt joyce's apology.

we have continuing coverage online at nbcbayarea.com. new details now on that bizarre cross-country manhunt that ended in the bay area following the murder of a man in chicago. authorities say at the urging of friends northwestern professor wyndham lathem drove to the federal courthouse in oakland and surrendered peacefully. at the same time andrew warren, an employee from oxford university who had been on the run with lathem, turned himself in in san francisco. both were wanted in connection with the gruesome stabbing death of 26-year-old hairstylist trenton cornell-duranleau in lathem's chicago apartment more than a week ago. lathem is set to appear in court tomorrow in dublin. a deadly shooting in a typically quiet peninsula city, belmont police are searching for a killer after finding a man shot to death on ralston avenue just after 5:00 yesterday morning in an apartment where there was some sort of gathering. the victim died at the scene. this is belmont's first homicide

of the year. investigators believe it was an isolated incident but neighbors are still rattled. >> actually i'm very nervous and kind of scared because i have to come sleep here at night. you never know what's going on. >> police are investigating a car for evidence as well as neighboring surveillance cameras that could provide clues. >> police in santa rosa say they were forced to shoot and kill a man who approached them with a knife. it happened around 6:00 yesterday morning when police responded to a report of a man with a knife acting strangely inside a home. officers found him hiding under a bed. they say he refused to drop the knife even when officers tried to resolve the situation with nonlethal measures. when the man approached police with the knife, at least one officer opened fire. that man died at the scene. it was all caught on police body cameras and an investigation is now under way. we continue to follow

developments in the shooting at san francisco's delores park. brain storming ways to move forward after three people were shot in broad daylight. police increased their presence in the park and a new group called the dolores park ambassadors. neighbors want people who spend time in the park as well as nearby business owners to take action if they see something. >> a lot of communities use the park regularly, and they should all be part of this ambassador program just to give the sense of ownership. so we don't just watch the park go by the wayside again. >> thursday's shooting is believed to are have involved gang members. at least one of the victims was an innocent bystander not affiliated with the gang. the shooters remain at-large. special barricades are blocking off the fremont festival of the arts in an effort to prevent deadly vehicle

attacks like the recent ones in london, new york, and france. up to 3,000 people are expected to attend the festival of the arts, and the city wants everyone to feel safe. organizers paid more than half a million dollars for 12 barricades. they're blocking off street access to cars. >> set at an angle so it won't move this unit which weighs roughly 13,600 pounds. so if you have a big truck come in it's going to catch the truck at the engine area and take the whole truck out basically. >> they can be easily lowered to allow emergency vehicles through. firefighters are mopping up. officials say illegal fireworks are to blame and police are now investigating. the fire started just after 9:00 last night on a hillside in the city's evergreen neighborhood. it burned about four acres before firefighters put out the flames.

tell where we're looking on this gloomy morning. vianey arana says most of us will be seeing sun today. emeryville should be about 70 degrees. the u.n. security council put strong new economic pressure on north korea this weekend approving a series of sanctions, and the goal of that is to cut exports by north korea and reduce the flow of cash into the country. if successful it would force the regime to return to negotiations over its nuclear and missile programs. nbc's kelly o'donnell has the late details. >> reporter: a stern new message for north korea. >> today you're going to see action -- eshg. >> reporter: a saturday session it at the united nations where the u.s. led the way. winning unanimous support, notably with srussia and china onboard, to tighten economic screws on the kim jong unregime. >> these sanctions will cut dope and give the north korean leadership a taste of the

welcome back. it is 7:15 on your sunday morning. fog covering the golden gate bridge there but vianey arana says we should all be seeing some sunshine today. a slight cooling trend, temperatures in the upper 60s in the city by the bay today. crews are still working to repair a sinkhole in san pablo. you can see it forming under this car after a water main broke yesterday morning flooding the streets. it closed down roads at 16th street and mission in san pablo. firefighters tried to keep water from flowing into homes while workers were starting to clean it up. right now there's no word on when the roads will reopen. sold out shows, expensive tickets, and rave reviews were the norm for "hamilton" the musical's run here in san francisco. last night it was the final curtain call as b"today in the

bay's" marianne favro shows us hundreds scrambled to get a shot at a ticket before the show left town. >> reporter: for the day "hamilton" has seen almost a cult following. emily quinn has seen the musical twice, but that didn't stop her from trying to get tickets for tonight's final show in san francisco this year. >> i'm just really trying to get tickets. i was standing in line earlier for the 2:00 one. i didn't get those. >> reporter: this woman is hoping to see the show for the fourth time. >> i really want to. >> reporter: alejandro and his family were priced out of tickets running at $500. a few were lucky. and now anna drew from montana is going to see her first musical ever. most of the people who tried it to get tickets tonight left empty-handed but were encouraged they'll get another shot because "hamilton" is returning to san francisco in early 2019. in san francisco, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. all right.

just shy of 7:17. let's check in with vianey arana with a look at our weekend forecast. a little bit cooler, you say, but sunshine. the best of both worlds. >> we have a nice combination today and then we do have have a warming trend again later. let's enjoy the temperatures for today. 68 degrees on the peninsula. the tri-valley at 60 degrees. about 65 degrees in the south bay. we can thank the cloudy skies to the marine layer hugging the coast especially for san francisco but, of course, fran sfrap's no stranger to the early morning fog. now the good news the doppler radar showing off that marine layer to about 1,000 feet right now can be seen as of now all the way to the east bay, even parts of the north hills as well and hazier skies down in the south bay but it will burn off. that's the good news because we haven't been getting too much sunshine along the coast but today a better shot of that. inland spots sunnier. let's take a look at today's

highs. if you notice we're climbing down into the 80s but some spots, areas like east san jose, will be slightly warmer today. that's because we have building high pressure on the way and inland spots are hotter, areas like concord. already a few degrees cooler than yesterday. oakland a high of about 72 degrees. for the peninsula half moon bay 62 degrees and we are expecting san mateo to reach 72. in san francisco yesterday we had expected highs of 70s in the forecast. today we'll be topping out into those 60s with nice, clear skies. i know we had plenty of fog into friday and saturday as well. if you're heading to the north bay we do have this building low-pressure system just offshore. what that might be able to do tonight and into tomorrow, the next couple of hours, maybe bring up the chance of a few sprinkles here or there in the further northern areas. so as of right now it's not looking too promising but, of course, those onshore winds and the breezier conditions are expected to pick up later tonight. keep that in mind.

a quick remind er today is the last day for the santa clara county fair. if you are heading out, look at the icons. sun block will be needed. by about 10:00 a.m. as you get ready to head to the fair, 70 degrees. and then santa clara, like i mentioned, cooler. we'll stay in the upper 70s while you're out there early. so we will be climbing into the 80s. for the most part much more pleasant conditions out there. hazy sun rise and dropping down into milder temperatures but some inland spots will be warming up nice willy into the 80s. over the next seven days, a look at what i was talking about. we have this marine layer that will keep us in the 60s. and then if you notice between wednesday and thursday we start seeing an increase in those temperatures and really seeing an increase in temperatures for inland spots. we catch a little bit of a break from the 90s through tuesday and into wednesday, but by wednesday we have this building high pressure and that's going to warm us right back up into the

in the years since the organization isn't the only thing that's grown. >> hi, this is kimberly bryant. >> reporter: by 2012 kimberly bryant had spent enough years working in technology to know that she stood out simply by sitting down at a table with other tech types. >> i noticed there were not too many people of color in the room and definitely weren't that many women either. >> reporter: though kimberly admits it wasn't until her daughter, kai, got interested in following in her footsteps that kimberly got serious about changing the landscape. and so she started black girls code, exposing young women of color to the opportunities in tech while at the same time teaching them the skills they'd need to take advantage of them. at the same time kimberly dreamed of it getting big. and since then it certainly has. this two-week summer camp in oakland run by one of 11 black girls co-chapters across the n

fran san fran, about 58 degrees. san francisco will be one of those spots where it will be slightly cooler today and will remain fairly cool at least through maybe tuesday and into wednesday before we see a change in that forecast. but doppler radar right now really showing off that fog. you can actually see the fog is spread all the way to the east bay and even further in some north bay spots as well and that's going to remain in there or at least spread across the area until the lunch hour when we begin to see that burn off. hey, here is something you should probably check out this weekend. we've been at the fremont festival of arts. mike inouye was there yesterday and chris chmura. i'm not sure if they'll be there today. i know the nbc booth will be there and temperatures will be absolutely perfect for it. we'll be in the 60s and 70s to start off. if you're heading out there later in the day, maybe bring a baseball cap because it will be, as i mentioned, sunny and climbing into the 80s. if you can make sure you stop by and say hi to some of the team out there. they'll have some goodies and giveaways. they usually do especially for

man was seen standing on the roadway. he was then hit by multiple cars including a big rig. he was pronounced dead at the scene. officers say at least three cars were involved in the crash. river road was had shut down three hours while investigators collected evidence. the u.s. knave youy and marine corps suspended search and rescue operations for three he marines missing at sea off the coast of australia. the three disappeared after a crash of a marine osprey aircraft. there were 21 passengers and five crew members onboard the aircraft when it went into the water. all but three aboard had been rescued. the military says the cause of the crash remains under investigation. secretary of state john kerry rex tillerson met with the south korean foreign mince it ter for talks. the two diplomats held their meetinging on the sideline of southeast asian ministerial meeting in man i willila. it comes after harsh sanctioned

safer. but is it really? regulators have found more safety violations. here's investigative reporter jaxon van derbeken. >> reporter: visiting family in richmond. >> coming over the bridge and the smoke just starting off to my left. >> reporter: the unit number four at chevron's giant refinery was on fire. this animation shows how efforts to fix a leaky pipe turned into a nightmare. investigators determined that managers had ordered workers to make repairs without a costly shutdown. while trying to remove incompetence lags, they jabbed a bad lly corroded pipe. loaded with heavy metal. unaware of the danger, michael pulled over to watch before

spending the night with family three blocks away. >> the next morning a lot of coughing, wheezing. went to the emergency room and they diagnosed me with chemical burns to my lungs. >> reporter: five years and several surgeries later board still struggles to breathe. >> that's the worst of it. at night when you're gasping for air and waking up in the middle of the night. >> reporter: some 15,000 people went to local hospitals, many sued over the fire. chevron declined to talk to us on camera but touted new efforts to harden the refinery against the corrosion that triggered the fire. it released a statement saying in part, at chevron, everything we do begins with our fundamental commitment to safety. but garrett brown, a senior safety official with the state and cal osha at the time of the fire, worries chevron ignored a decade of warnings. >> that pipe had gone from a quarter inch thick to no thicker than a coke can.

>> reporter: and refinery watchdogs feared chevron planned to use cheaper crude oil could reverse any of its safety improvements at richmond. cheaper crude has more sulfur, highly corrosive and attacks pipes. >> there is no reason we should be allowing more pollution and more workers and community members to die and get sick because the company wants to save a few bucks on cheaper oil. it doesn't need when it's profiting on what it has now. >> reporter: a senior scientist for communities for a better environment, a local group that bills itself as a watchdog over the refineries. >> this is what it's like to live in the shadows the smokestacks. you know it's going to happen again. you don't know when. this industry is a ticking time bomb. >> reporter: nbc bay area learned had in a report issued late last year state regulators found the refinery was not meeting industry standards governing release valves, devices designed to prevent

dangerous pressure surges. experts warn that lapse could cause another fire. >> our particular unit is doing the best it can to ensure those type of events don't happen. >> reporter: this man heads up the refinery safety inspection efforts at cal osha, an agency faulted for lax oversight of refineries. today he says things are better at chevron and the 15 refineries thanks to more staff, new rules, and unprecedented inspection access during shutdowns. >> it's a significant change and it's a very powerful tool for us when we're looking at what refineries are doing and, more importantly, what they're not doing. >> reporter: richmond mayor tom butts says he meets with chevron regularly to track progress. >> it's a much safer place. it's still a refinery and still hasri risks. >> reporter: five years after the fire michael board is still paying for his own medical

welcome back. few policy areas are as dear to californians as climate change. they have determined national auto standards through applying for and receiving waivers on greenhouse gas emissions levels. recently california won a new waiver from the trump administration, and bay area political analyst larry ston is here to explain why this recent victory is so important. >> it's the latest in a string of victories, obviously enough the state beating the national government. we don't think of it that way. transportation is critical in california. it's critical everywhere. it is the second largest source of greenhouse gas pollution, about 27% of the total. only electricity exceeds it with 29%. the transportation component includes cars. we know that. trucks, yeah. and planes. all of which use fassel fuel. but of these clearly automobiles, kira, are by far

the largest contributors. >> so what has the federal government been doing to solve the greenhouse gas pollution problem or emission problem? >> it's an old problem, we know that. periodically the environmental protection agency announces new gas mileage rules for cars and trucks in the coming years. now the better the gas mileage, well, the fewer the greenhouse gas emissions. in 2011 during the obama administration the epa established a 54.5 miles per gallon requirement by 2025. that's a regulation that was and continues to be contested by the automobile industry. still, regulations have brought success. according to the epa as of 2015 greenhouse gas emissions were reduced to 1995 levels this despite more cars, trucks, planes and ships this in use. >> wow. >> nevertheless the automobile industry, as we expect, is

requesting an adjustment to that requirement which may well be gra granted by the trump administration as part of its effort to ease emissions regulations along with all the other regulations the trump a administration wants it to reduce. >> so california is kind of going in the opposite direction. how does california then if fit into the discussion? it seems the federal government is actually in charge of these policies not the state. >> it usually is. that's what makes it so interesting. the federal government is in charge. but historically the environmental protection agency has allowed a state to apply for a waiver if that state's requirements is even more strict, even more strict, than the if federal standard. now california has received such waivers for automobile greenhouse gas emissions on 45 separate occasions. and, to many people's surprise, was recently given assurance from the epa -- yes, the trump epa -- that the state could continue with its own rigorous rules, far more rigorous than

the federal standard. now there's more. typically as many as a dozen other states have followed california's lead leaving about 40% of the nation's population pursuing tougher rules than the national standard. so in as much as the nation's automakers don't want to make cars with two sets of rules, one for 40% and one for the other 60% they have reluctantly fallen into line yet again. >> that's interesting. so would that mean that the trump administration, dare i say, may be more environmentally friendly than many had predict ed? >> it leaves a few people scratching their heads. remember, president trump has embarked on a policy supporting as much american produced fossil fuel as possible so that we may be energy self-sufficient, drilling off the california coast, fracking, all kinds of things where these kinds of things in terms of oil availability would be important to the state. that's one way to look at it.

the trump administration if we're going anything further has been pushing hard to ease lagss in a variety of areas including fossil fuels and energy production but at least for now keep your fingers crossed,c california has managed to keep its special position in the area of automobile emissions which is a welcome benefit to the millions, and i mean millions of people here suffering from asthma and other respiratory conditions. we don't think about this. we take this for granted. if you roll back the clock 40 or 50 years we have smog alerts in the congested valleys all over the state day after day after day, all kinds of kids missing schools, asthma and what not. so these kinds of changes have meant big differences particularly in california and the national government continues to allow us to do that. >> good for those families off i-5 who live in that corridor where there's all that traffic. and los angeles and parts of the east bay. >> larry gerston, as always, we

good morning. it is 7:52 and i figured i'd get you started with this nice shot overlooking mt. hamilton now. we have hazy skies, these low clouds lingering around and it's all thanks to that marine layer that's hugging the coast had this morning keeping us a lot cooler than what we've been waking up to. we've been going down in terms of the degree. the south bay 65. right now in the tri-valley 60 degrees. 57 for the north bay. san francisco foggy. those hazy skies for the east bay at 61 degrees. now if we take a live look now at the doppler radar we can see the marine layer deepening to about 1,000 feet and sitting just off north shore we have this building low-pressure system and that could spark up the chance of seeing some showers and possibly some drizzle up further in the northern bay area. for right now it looks like models are promising too much ak it tift in tactivity in the are.

if you are out there and start seeing some rain now you know why. now san francisco right now is pretty foggy. 61 degrees and then if you look at the temperature trend by 10:00 a.m. 66 degrees he we start seeing that kind of burn off and then clearing in the clouds. we start seeing and welcoming plenty of sunshine. san francisco will climb up into the 60s for today but it will stay in the 60s. we're not expecting to see 70s for today. san jose right now at 55 degrees and the temperature trend showing an increase over the next couple of hours and also showing the same thing, that cloud cover and it will burn off at about the 10:00 hour, 70 degrees. if you notice by about 12:0076 and then it starts getting warmer between 2:00 and 3:00 into the 80s for the san jose area. now today's predicted highs we have a nice spread. we have 63 for half moon bay. 66 for san francisco. in oakland a few degrees cooler and that's all thanks to the onshore flow keeping us a little

overcast for now. palo alto 66 degrees. concord at 7. livermore at 89. morgan hill and some inland areas are going to climb into the upper 80s. now let's talk about your day planner for today. we're starting off partly cloudy and with that onshore flow we are expecting some breezier conditions along the coast. so it might start picking up with some winds into the afternoon hours. by 12:00 we start warming inland spots at 82. by 3:0088 for inspots. morgan hill will be one of the hotter spots and we do start cooling by about 7:00 and that's because over the next seven days we are expecting slightly cooler conditions. stick with us for the next two days. mon, 65. we cool down more. by tuesday, 66. as we head into wednesday and thursday we start noticing while we do see an increase in temperatures and that's because we have some high pressure that is expected to build over inland spots and that's going to warm us back up into the 90s.

we're not in the clear of the summer heat just yet but we do have a little bit of relief coming into play by monday at about 87 degrees. today will be a great to enjoy the outdoors, and i know i will be enjoying the outdoors. i think i will take my puppy out for a walk today. well, i take him every day but a longer walk. maybe a couple more rounds around the block. >> because it won't be as hot as it has been the last few days. >> exactly. well, vianey, you may want to avert your eyes to the folks out there if you're watching us while enjoying your are breakfast. this is kind of gross. some unwelcome eight-legged visitors are showing up in some california homes. tarantulas. tarantula sightings have increase increased in some san diego homes including one incident where a woman found it in her microwave. another in a man's shoe. can you imagine putting foot in it? experts say they are in the midst of mating season. they currently are out and about

looking for partners. they say the rise may also be a side effect of the weather. when it's hot the critters may be looking for a cool place to hide out and find food. i hope that doesn't happen in the bay area. >> oh, no. >> thank goodness we're in a cooldown now. surfing dogs hit the beach for the second annual world dog surfing championships yesterday in pacifica. for the nonsurfing pups they had a costume contest. proceeds went to nonprofit organizations benefitinging animals. so cute. and as we told you earlier it was "hamilton's" final night in san francisco. the final curtain call after months of sold out shows. they are moving to thrill audiences in l.a. bay area fans will have another chance to see the hit show in two years. "hampton" will return to the bay area. it is due back in early 2019, something to look forward to. thanks so much for making us a part of your morning.
