that is a u.s. territory and home to a key air force base. >> so what was the timing of this? it followed a harsh warning hours earlier from president trump that any further threats from kim jong un would be met with, quote, fire and fury like the world has never soon. >> the escalating war of words had an immediate impact on wall street and overnight major markets in asia and europe dropped as well. >> our team is ready to break this all down starting with nbc chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell. >> it was a chilling response to thunderous words to president trump after reports of an intelligence assessment that kim jong un was closer to having a nuclear weapon than thought. this morning, touching down in guam, the same territory threatened overnight by north korea.

>> i have no concerns about this particular rhetoric of the last few days. i think the president, again, as commander in chief, i think he felt it necessary to issue a very strong statement directly to north korea. >> reporter: tillerson trying to sound reassuring just hours after president trump fired off a stern warning to north korea to stop threatening the u.s. >> they will be met with fire, fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before. >> reporter: drawing a red line just hours after reports of a major nuclear advance by north korea. following president trump's tough talk, north korea issued a threat of its owns are announcing in a statement it was carefully examining plans to attack the u.s. territory of guam with medium to long-range ballistic missile. 6,000 american troops are stationed on the remote pacific island where the u.s. operates a critical air force base in the region. an official tells nbc news kim

jong un may now have a miniature nuclear warhead, small enough to fit inside one of his long-range missiles, a missile that could reach the u.s. mainland. it still has to survive reentry but experts say that's a matter of when, not if. president trump is strongly hinting at a preemptive strike, h.r. mcmaster not ruling out nuclear war. and north korea could retaliate against 25 million people in seoul, including had 100,000 americans and 28,000 u.s. troops stationed there. the u.s. has recently successfully tested missile defenses from the west coast, hitting a test missile over the pacific, but the system is not fool proof. meanwhile the president's strong

language is being criticized by laei leading lawmakers of both parties, dianne feinstein calling his statements bombastic and john mccain -- >> the great leaders i've seen, they doesn't threaten unless they are ready to act. >> now this morning the president tweeting a more balanced message that the u.s. nuclear arsenal is now far stronger and more powerful than ever before. he added "hopefully we will never have to use that power but there will never be a time we are not the most powerful nation in the world." back to you. >> andrea mitchell, a scary story. >> let me bring in nicole wallace and retired army colonel jack jacobs. good to see you. let's talk about the rhetoric and pick it up where andrea just left off. is this the president giving kim jong un a taste of his own

medicine, maybe his own vocabulary or is it going to make a bad situation worse? >> i think it's irrelevant actually. when i first heard the remarks, i thought kim jong un had said those remarks. i think it's just for consumption by each side and consumption in korea -- >> is it dangerous? do the words matter in this context? >> words usually do matter but the president has a tendency to be bombastic all the time and i think to the extent that this is about war, it's really important, but to the extent that it really broadcasts what we're going to do, it's not. >> let's not dismiss the words so quickly. we all remember shock and awe in iraq. fire and fury as a military guide, jack, what do you read into fire and fury? is this conventional weaponry or is he threatening something else? >> well, the suggestion is we're going to use nuclear weapons against north korea. there's a qualitative difference

between fire and fury using nuclear weapons and shock and awe using nonnuclear means. it's just to scare north korea and see what they do next. >> nicole, when someone says something like what president trump yesterday, he draws a line in the sand. then the question is do our adversaries cross that line? shortly after that north korea said they're looking at plans to attack guam, which is a u.s. territory. by the very fact that they said that, didn't they cross the line? >> sure. and, listen, this president ran as someone who almost in like a seinfeld way was going to be the opposite of barack obama in every shape and form. he has now drawn a far more stark, far more inflammatory, a far more dangerous red line. and he's the kind of guy who would be sort of shamed into keeping up with his own words. so the language is so stunning

because it contradicts all of the tradition of american military history. you talk about shock and awe. those were used after the military phase had begun. >> by the media, as a matter of fact. >> those weren't words used during military diplomacy and at the u.n. security council. this a president that has now used language that he can't put back in the toothpaste tube. >> there's a theory of the case that this is all by design, the president uses this hot rhetoric so the north koreans that the president might be willing to use this force. do you buy it? >> no, i think you have to convince the military establishment to go along with it.

we have some pretty cool heads there. i thits going to be difficult to convince them to do things like reemti re reemptive attacks. >> they've gotten the attention of our allies and some people in congress. what do you expect to see over the next couple of days in terms of support on this issue? >> any time the country goes to war, the president typically enjoys support because our military and people are in harm. on the day that he elevated the chances of that happening, he rebuked by no one currently serving in the military, but barry mccaffrey talked to us yesterday. the cooler heads are the secretary of defense, are the generals serving on his own staff and they all seem to believe this is language that will not be matched in the moment by military action.

outside their barracks at 8:00 in the morning is really cowardly. the soldiers coming out of the barracks this morning were part of a special contingent deployed in paris suburbs to counter terror attacks. this, the latest in a series of incidents in and around paris, targeting security forces that are keeping one of the world's most visited terrorist cities on edge. among the attacks this year, a muslim extremist shot dead after attempting to grab a soldier's weapon at the airport. a man shouting "ala akbar" held on attacking four soldiers at the louvre and another outside notre dame with a hammer. and just three months ago a police officer killed and two seriously injured after a gunman opened fire on a police car in the champs elysees. this latest incident using a

vehicle, one of isis's favorite attack modes. this all happened in an area of pari paris. the prime target now, it seems, matt and savannah, the very authorities working to prevent those attacks. >> keir, thanks very much. >> a lot more to get to this morning, including the search. it's over for a suspected -- a man suspected of killing a missouri police officer. 39-year-old ian mccarthy was taken into custody last night after someone calls 911 to report someone walking down the highway. officer michael is listed in stable condition. >> and donald trump is vowing to win the fight against the

taylor swift groping trial heads back to trial after testifying he never touched taylor swift inappropriately. joe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the very first witness was david muell mueller, the former radio d.j. saying he never touched taylor swift and her accusations cost him his career. >> david mueller testifying as music superstar taylor swift looked on in the courtroom. what happened when they posed for this photo. mueller testified as he moved to get into the picture his hand was closed and came into contact with part of her body. i felt what appeared or seemed to be a rib cage or rib or ribs. mueller described it as jostling, adding our hands

touched and our arms touch and said he never lifted her skirt or grabbed her behind. his lawyer argues that the photo supports mule are because her skirt is not visibly ruffled. two days later, mueller was fired. he sued swift and members of her team saying the groping allegation cost him a job that pays more than $150,000 a year. he said it's a horrible thing eye accus-- i'm accused of and t to clear my name. swift countersued. and at one point swift's mother and co-defendant, andrea, broke down in tears. their attorney asked what's wrong with this picture? a woman is assaulted, a woman reports it and she gets sued? it just doesn't make sense. he said swift is asking for $1 in damages telling the jury she's not trying to bankrupt

with news of a second data dump and it's targeting more than just hit hbo shows like "game of tloe thrones." >> this is a terrifying situation for people in hollywood. >> reporter: matt bellamy said hackers e-mailed them what appear to be internal documents. an upcoming episode and this ransom note addressed to hbo. in the five-month video set to ominous music from "game of thrones", the hackers call themselves mr. smith and demand hbo pay them millions of dollars or face even more leaks of sensitive company materials. in a statement, hbo says a forensic review is ongoing. it's working with cyber security firms and law enforcement to resolve the incident and the

company has there is no reason to believe their e-mail system as a whole has been compromised. >> so far the damaging information has not been significant. >> it's unclear how deep this cyber rabbit hole will go and how it will compare to the hack that rocked sony pictures. in 2014 cyber crooks released m embarrassi embarrassing e-mails, personal information and the salary of thousands of employees. >> with sony, it was a purely hurtful damaging leak. the goal was the leak. >> reporter: now it's unscripted territory. >> do they have more e-mails? do they have actual episodes of "game of thrones." it's really a question of how

♪ we're back. 7:43. the latest report card on how the airlines are treating passengers. >> this comes just four months after that incident. we all talked about it. where a man suffered injuries when he was dragged off an oversold united flight. nbc's tom kcostello covers aviation. >> reporter: the bottom line is that 2.5 million people are flying every day in this country. and this morning, we have the latest numbers of passengers who are bumped, the most on-time airlines and the airlines who have some work to do. safe to say airline customer service has suffered a black eye in 2017. >> this is wrong. other, my god. look at what you did to him. >> reporter: viral videos of dr. david dao dragged off in april. a fight with a passenger.

of a delta agent, threatening passengers who refused to be bumped. >> that can be a federal offense. you and your kids will be -- >> oh. >> reporter: and an all-out brawl in ft. lauderdale after spirit airline cut hundreds of flights. after public shaming, the airlines promised to do better. >> the game-changer is video. now, we can see some of the things the airlines have done. it's been a game-changer. >> reporter: this morning, evidence the airlines are trying to do better. in the first six months of the year, the number of passengers bumped from flights, dropped to a 22-year low. fewer than 1 passenger out of every 10,000. >> i feel like everyone is trying to, you know, care more about the customer because everyone was getting so mad about everything. >> reporter: and good news for the summer family getaway. 76% of flights were on time in june. number one, no surprise, hawaiian air had the best

she tells the story of her upbringing. and there's parts that are shocking. parts that are endearing. she had an unusual childhood, being taken all over the country. extreme poverty. how do you describe her and describe the story? >> she's just a great representation of how resilient humans are. that we can go for a lot and make it on the other side willing to love and accept. one of the things she taught me, she hasn't forgiven her parents because she doesn't feel there's anything they need to forgive. this was the best they could. and she accepts this was the best they could. and that's a beautiful sentiment. >> you mention she was on the set sometimes. i would like to call my lifeline. did you have her on speed dale dial dial? how much do you want to be connected to the real person when you are portraying a character? >> as much as you can. at the end of the day, she was letting go and allowing us to tell the story, knowing it's a

movie. it's not going to be an exact representation of her memory how things went. we spoke a lot. >> as i mentioned, it's such an unusual upbringing. the movie and the book open where she's cooking at the age of 3 years old and is burned by hot flames. i was thinking, it's so strange and unusual. and yet, there's something universal about it. you overcome your past and you scrape by and you make it. i thought about you acting since you were 7 years old and kind of going through that same process in a sense. could you identify with that aspect of it? >> i think what's incredible about this story is although it seems like a specific upbringing that not many people would have had, it weirdly has so many general things in it that people relate to. whether you had an unconventional upbringing or a parent that you don't feel like raised you in the way you wanted to be raised. there's so many different ways that i think you can look at this story and connect with it. so, that's kind of -- with this, it was just about connecting

with jeannette and telling her story. i tried to keep myself out of it as much as possible. but i think for an audience member, there's a lot. >> to connect to. you are directing. you have a new movie. story, it was the judges singing her praises. >> strength through vulnerability. now, that's a mantra that i try to live by every day. >> reporter: the path to that unforgettab unforgettable moment forged by her spirit and ability to defy all odds. in 2005, she was in a plane crash in nigeria that killed 107 people. she an only one other person survived. she began a long recovery process. more than 100 surgeries and countless hours of physical therapy. much of it at shriners hospital for children in galveston, texas. >> i didn't have movement. i couldn't do anything by myself. when i got to shriners, they basically gave everything back to me, really. especially my independence. my happiest memories are right here in this room. >> reporter: and you haven't been back here in a while. >> not since 2011.

>> a large part of that recovery happened here in the musical therapy room. how important was music to your recovery? >> music was my escape. knowing i had that thing that wasn't taken by the accident, i was so happy i had a place i could express it. >> reporter: it was also the first place she ever sang publicly. this is the first stage you ever performed on? >> yep. ever, ever. i was so supernervous. >> reporter: while she is still undergoing treatment, she serves as an inspiration to those here at shriners. >> i wanted to meet her. >> reporter: like 9-year-old sami. >> hello. i love your dress. >> thank you so much. your dress is so cute, too. >> thanks. >> you look so cute. >> reporter: what kind of inspiration is she for some of the other patients here? >> we can't underestimate how
