president's own party are calling for a more forceful denouncement of white nationalism. nbc's kelly o'donnell has more this morning. >> reporter: for a presidency forged by blunt talk, what donald trump did not say is politically deafening. >> hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides. >> reporter: the president seemed alone in spreading blame for the violence. his omission choosing not to call out white supremacist groups. a failure according to critics and many republicans. >> i would urge the president to dissuade the groups that he's their friend. >> call this white sue premcism, let the country and the world hear it. it's something that needs to come from the oval office and this white house needs to do it today. >> reporter: a wave of criticism from national voices. first daughter, ivanka trump was more direct. there should be no place for

racism, white supremacy and neo-nazis and the white house damage control, the president's condemnation of violence includes white supremacists, kkk, neo-nazi and all extremists groups but candidate donald trump insisted labels did matter over the term radical islamic terrorism. >> anyone who cannot name our enemy is not fit to lead this country. to solve a problem you have to be able to state what the problem is or at least say the name. >> reporter: hr mcmaster defended the president. >> when he condemned bigotry and hatred on all sides that included the white supremacists and neo-nazis. it know it's -- i know it's clear in his mind. >> reporter: while anthony scaramucci said the president fell short. >> i think he needed to be harsher in the nature of the white supremacists. >> reporter: tom bossert was

pressed to be more direct himself. >> i condemn all the groups that's white houses this kind of hatred and exclusion. i can't be clearer. >> reporter: so far the president has not weighed in on whether the deadly violence should be treated as domestic terrorism. his national security adviser who thinks this is a form of terrorism said the investigation must determine if it meets the legal requirements for that distinction. that mcmaster says he thinks this is a form of domestic terrorism. frances? >> all right, kelly, thank you. demonstrators gathered feet from the white house, marching and directly countering the white supremacist groups who carried out the violence in charlottesville. still, the lead organizer jason kesler said the police and not the white nationals or the kkk are to blame for the weekend of deadly protests. >> what happened yesterday was a result of the charlottesville police officers refusing to do

their job. >> well, hundreds of people shouted him down. the crowd surging there, you see chasing him from the microphone. hitting, kicking and eventually tackling him before police moved in. that scene was followed by calm vigils held throughout the day and overnight across the country. the most gut wrenching one taking place in charlottesville for heather heyer. for more on how charlottesville is reacting this morning we go now to nbc's maya rodriguez on the ground. good morning, maya. >> reporter: good morning, phillip. well, it was quiet overnight in charlottesville and again this morning. we're at the intersection of fourth and water streets and this is where heather heyer was killed when that car plowed into a crowd injuring 19 other people. now, the driver of that car james fields is expected in court at 10:00 a.m. he'll be attending via video conferencing. he was here for the unite the right rally that was going on this weekend. charlottesville and the governor of virginia have spoken out about. take a listen. >> i think it's clear a terrorism attack with a car used as a weapon our hearts are grieving. >> hatred and bigotry language has to stop. we had many individuals come to our state a vast majority with weapons. there's no place for it in our country. >> reporter: we have some good news. those 19 people who were injured the hospital that was treating them says nine have been discharged and ten of them are in good condition. so that is certainly some welcome news here in charlottesville this morning. phillip? >> great to hear, thank you. today president trump will reportedly sign a memo on whether china should be cited for intellectual property violations. it can lead to economic sanctions. he is using leverage to get north korea to stop the aggressive behavior and he spoke

to the chinese president on saturday and they agreed that north korea must shop the provocative and escalatory behavior. kelly cobiella is in seoul this morning. bring us up to date with the latest. >> reporter: well, frances, good morning. first to that china issue. the white house says that the trade issue and north korea threat are separate and not connected. however, china doesn't necessarily see it that way. already reacting in the form of an editorial in the state run china daily, warning the u.s. against sparking a trade war with this latest move. here in seoul, the chairman of the joint chief of staff joseph dunford is meeting with the top south korea officials and the president. the south koreans are looking for reassurance that the u.s. will consult with them before taking any possible military action here on the peninsula. and we heard from the south korean president for first time

since this latest war of words almost a week ago. we heard from him today. he said that the u.s. and south korea both agree that the nuclear threat on the peninsula must end, must be resolved, peacefully and that north korea must stop making threats. today, yet another commentary and editorial from the north koreans in their state run media asking and titled does the u.s. want its own self-destruction? also denouncing those upcoming annually planned military drills with the u.s. and south korea. the plans for guam by the north koreans are set to be in place some time this week. the question, will kim jong un act on them? frances, back to you. >> see where we go from here. kelly, thank you. the southeast is dealing with some stormy starts to the week. nbc's bill karins is joining us now. you're telling me that our drought in seattle is over -- >> it's weird. they're probably like three

dunkirk had more than $11 million this weekend. leading the news the mayor of lexington, kentucky says he plans to relocate the confederate statues, tweeting that tuesday he'll ask the city council to support his decision. it comes after a weekend of chaos in charlottesville that all started over an effort to remove a confederate statue there. as these monuments, some of whom say are symbols of hate drive increased tension across the south. nbc's gabe gutierrez has the report. >> reporter: the chaos in charlottesville had been building for months. since the city voted in april to remove the robert e. lee statue there had been three protests, counterprotests and now violence. >> it's extremely painful. i was in tears yesterday to see that. i was that hurt. it hurts. it hurts. >> you will not replace us! >> reporter: organizers of the planned rally had said it was

meant to honor history and save the statue. >> it really is a sad day in our constitutional democracy when we are not able to have civil liberties like the first amendment. >> reporter: but wes bell amy is fighting to remove it. >> they want to mask committing domestic terrorism but this is clearly about white supremacy. we won't have it here, period. >> reporter: since dylann roof massacred nine black parishioners in a historic church, parts of the south have rushed to remove confederate symbols such as in south carolina and monuments in new orleans. three states have more than any others, georgia, north carolina and virginia with each more than 80. but beyond preserving the past, experts say there's been a resurgence of something deeper. a rebranding dubbed white

at the opening bell. asian and european markets are higher today with the easing geopolitical concerns. the dow still had the second worst week of the year amid the tensions between the u.s. and north korea. you want to look for econ data on the consumer. it's costing more to fill up your car. the price of gas rose an average of 8 cents over the past two weeks to $2.40 a gallon. the spike is mostly due to the rising crude oil prices. it's still well below where it was in august of 2015. and hackers have released more new episodes of hbo's shows online and that includes from the upcoming season of "curb your enthusiasm" which returns in october. but not from "game of thrones." the hackers who have been leaking content for several weeks are demanding payment to stop and in a statement hbo says

that's a special round trip train service to and from one of the best eclipse viewing areas in southern illinois. the train sold out in less than a day and it will carry 409 passengers across the land of lincoln to carbondale, illinois. riders paid about 150 bucks to leave chicago at 3:00 a.m. to see the moon cover the sun for roughly two minutes and 38 seconds. so not a lot of time but it's going to be such a great phenomenon. check it out. cruise lines are upping the ante with the size and features of the ships but how about this, a new 4,000 passenger alaska bound norwegian bliss. it will feature a racetrack where passengers will be able to race each other in electric go-carts. the ship will have a water park with a slide that extends over the side of the ship, but how cool is that, to get lost in the floating building. >> yet another thing to do on a cruise. all right. this is "early today." we'll see you in a bit. for 100 years,

well, it's monday. to the week's forecast. today, we're mostly locked into mild conditions in the west. some downpours in the southeast too. all the wet weather is in the middle of the country. numerous areas of showers and even a few severe storms into wednesday. notice in the west, keeping it dry and still relatively the same as today. not a lot of changes, at least in the beginning of the week. then by the end of the week sunny and dry and warmth returning to the west. all the stormy weather is in the southeast. not a lot of headlines and the tropics are quiet which is nice. >> thanks. two american soldiers were killed and another five wounded while conducting combat operations in iraq. nbc's ali arouzi has the latest

in london. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, frances. that's right, as you mentioned two service men and five others were injured while conducting operations in northern iraq. initial reports indicate that the incident wasn't due to any enemy contact according to the u.s. military, while reports from iraqi officials seem to suggest the troops were testing artillery when one of the shells blew up. but we're still waiting for confirmation on that report. in a brief statement lieutenant general townsend the commander of u.s. forces battling isis in iraq said the coalition sends its deepest condolences to these heroes, families and friends and teammates. now, frances, yesterday isis claimed responsibility for this attack. but a spokesman for the u.s. led coalition in iraq and syria said that those claims are false. however, it's important to point out that as the battle against isis intensifies, there's been an uptick of u.s. troops
