welcome to )today in the bay )n this busy monday, august 14th. we are following two breaking welcome to "today in the bay" on this busy monday morning, august 14th. following two breaking news stories, both shootings. one may impact the morning commute. some lanes of 880 are closed. we know right now in the east bay. >> we are also following breaking flus in san jose. several people shot overnight. let's get you up to speed on all of this. police investigating the shooting on 880 near san leandro. >> we have video of the scene. sharon is headed there right now. we'll check in with her as soon as she arrives. right now, this could play a major impact on the morning impact. mike? >> all the lanes of southbound

880 are actually closed. nimitz freeway is closed as folks try to get from oakland toward hayward through san leandro. slowing from marina boulevard. the crew had to get off at marina for the staging going there. we're trying to get more details from chp as to what they hold on to with the reroute and seeing slowing down into the area. i do not know if it affects your drive but it looks like folks are able to make the connection and continue south off of that castro valley. the other major issue for the freeways right now is south bay. northbound 87 is closed right now. you see the traffic slowing. there's police activity between curtner and alma and may clear up very soon and that is an issue for this portion of san jose and next breaking news story is about in the south bay, guys. that's right.

reports of several people shot in east an jose near capital and story. >> "today in the bay" kris sanchez joins us live. what can you tell us? >> reporter: the folks there within the neighborhood tell us that at least six people might be shot and six suspects could be at large in san jose. police still looking for diligently they don't have a lot of time to talk with us and show you video of the scene right after the shooting. it was reported near vista glen court and as you said between hilby park in east san jose. a neighbor said that his 8-year-old sister dove behind the couch when the family heard the gunshots. >> we heard gunshots and we were watching tv and then we thought they were fireworks at first and so we went to my mom's room and we looked outside and we heard people screaming and we saw that the neighbors across the street got a little panicky so we came

outside. >> reporter: now, that witness tells us that police sirens were quick to follow. san jose fire tells us this morning that six people were injured badly enough to go to the hospital by ambulance. we are in contact with san jose police but they're not releasing a lot of details at this point but with as many as six suspects on the run and no motive we know that you want to know if there's a public risk. we'll press for that answer and we'll get it to you as soon as we get it. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. new overnight, hundreds of people took to the streets of richmond, virginia, protesters marching near a statue of general robert e. lee. they were heard chanting take down the monument. crowds blocked streets and stopped traffic. of course, this follows all of that unrest in charlottesville, virginia, over the week. today, a man accused of driving a car into a crowd and killing a woman heads to court. 20-year-old james alex steel jr. faces several charges including

murder. as you likely heard, this all took place during an alt rally on saturday. sunday, the organizer tried to hold a news conference but he was attacked by protesters. that protest having consequences for a bay area man. a berkeley employee for fired for taking part in the white separatist rally. the man was identified by twitter users at that violent rally in virginia. now he is out of a job. >> top dog is politically outspoken. and they're sticking to, you know, what they have always done. i think it's ridiculous. the guy flew out to virginia for the protest. >> top dog is flooded with posts and calls about white after he was identified. he also allegedly took part in an april brawl in berkeley, as well. events led to vigils across the country including here.

sunday night people gathered at the deadly crash site in virginia, as well. head to nbcbayarea.com for videos and pictures of the protest. health care workers are rallying to keep an oakland nurse and family in the united states. maria sanchez and her husband face deportation tomorrow. sanchez family tried gaining legal status in the u.s. for 20 years. sanchez provides urgent care to cancer patients. senator dianne feinstein is fighting to stop the deportation from happening. >> i pray to god so she can help. a lot of strength so she can continue to fiat for us. many immigrant families she has been doing it through all this time. >> today supporters of sanchez plan to get together in front of the highland hospital at noon the protest that deportation plan.

dow still had the second worst week of the year amid the tensions between the u.s. and north korea. you want the look for retail sales, housing and the consumer. on friday, the dow closed up 14 to 21,858. the nasdaq rose 39 to 6256. meanwhile, it's costing more to fill up the gas tank. new data shows the price of gas rose an average of eight cents over three weeks to $2.40 a gallon and that's mostly due to the rise in crude oil prices. in san francisco, gas is a little higher at $3.12 a gallon while it's at $3 in san jose. the current price is 23 cents higher than a year ago and still well below august of 2015. and netflix making a big play stealing super producer shawnda rhymes from abc and disney. the creator of "grey's anatomy"

will move production studio to netflix and still have shows on the air. netflix facing competition. disney is launching a streaming service in 2019 and amazon announced a development deal with robert kirkman, the creator of "the walking dead." >> where the eyes are going these days. >> thank you. new this morning, bitcoin hit a new high. the virtual currency traded at $4,000 for the first time. this comes just after a week of its last high which was $3,000. bloomberg reports the new confidence in bitcoin comes after it moved to speed transactions with a fix to its main network. coming up, kari has a look at the monday morning forecast. >> it is going to be cooler today. we start with mostly clear skies across much of the bay area. looking at the temperature trend, we'll start out in the low 60s and then gradually see

at 4:44 on your monday morning, new this morning, scientists say the arctic is heating much faster than the rest of the planet. particular us climate accords has a goal of stopping earth warming 2 degrees celsius but the arctic crossed that threshold according to scientists. they predicted the region would heat faster than the rest of the world saying it could have a bad impact for communities, animals and of course the environment. with an eye on your environment on a monday morning, what a fabulous, fabulous weekend. >> it was. >> we had trouble in traffic but, man, what a good -- >> let's get to the good before the bad. >> i like the cooler temperatures. >> i do, too. >> we will have that today and then we'll start to see the temperatures inching up going through the week. here's a live look outside at the golden gate bridge. looks busy. at least we can see it as we start out on this early morning. looking at the high temperatures for today, we'll be up to 78

degrees in east san jose and 75 degrees in milpedes. up to 77 degrees in walnut creek. hayward, a high of 70 degrees there and for the peninsula, 60 half moon bay. it's going to be windy, as well. keep in mind you'll probably be comfortable in long sleeves all day long and the north bay going to see highs in the upper 70s and a few lower 80s. so as we're getting started in the closet this morning, it is going to be windy, right? don't bother with the hair today. put on a hat and go if you can and long sleeves also a great choice as it will be a little bit on the cool side, especially along the peninsula where we'll see more clouds today. even a few sprinkles, some drizzle around half moon bay and also for the area beaches and san francisco still keeping mostly cloudy skies and then it will be fairly warm for some of

the valleys but speaking on terms of where we should be for this time of year it will definitely be much cooler. heading out to the royals game this evening, first pitch at 7:05, will be at 64 degrees and we'll get the clouds and make sure you're wearing a nice warm jacket. and san francisco, gradually seeing the temperatures warming up through the week. we are looking at some upper 60s for the middle of the week and end of the week and then inland areas from 75 degrees today to 90 on friday so we'll have some more summer-like weather even as school begins for many kids this week. mike starts us out with a freeway closure. >> we have this video in to our newsroom and sharon is on the scene gathering more information but this investigation for shooting closed 880. nimitz freeway is completely closed southbound as lewalling boulevard. as far as the speed sensors go, we have the closure. now the traffic is jammed up to

marina boulevard and folks likely getting off the freeway and surface streets past the scene and then south of h street and more detail from chp and local pd where they like us to prefer reroute and checking on that. it does not appear to be affecting 238 and the castro valley. we just started that morning commute and we are tracking that. the rest of the bay shows a pretty typical pattern. bay bridge toll plaza no problems. northbound 87 right there up towards curtner. all lanes have been reopened after the earlier police activity and that's much better news for that portion and then notice kari talking about cupertino union schools start this week, today, in fact. that's an earlier wake up. some parents might be packing lunches already. look for surface street traffic. i should have mentioned waze. there we go. we can't stop that partnership and will help you.

affect traffic. a fire continues to burn inside yosemite national park. burned 400 acres. it's happening in the community of wawana inside of the park. park rangers do say they have alerted all nearby local businesses. that blaze started 2:00 on sunday. no word yet on the possible cause yet. wild fire in napa valley is on the last leg, 95% contained. little more than 165 fighters at the scene down from more than 300 before. one firefighter was injured but is expected to recover. the fire burned 114 acres and destroyed no structures. the downtown berkeley bart station will close today. crews will begin renovating the station's signature rotunda. the plan to replace the glass covering. that renation will last about six months. this is tied to a larger $7

million improvement project. bart has thousands of extra clipper cards after overestimating how many people would want them for the parade. the chronicle says bart spent $600,000 on 40,000 free loaded cards for the warriors championship parade and only sold a little bit more than a thousand leaving them with 38,000 unused cards. bart told the chronicle trying to sell them for future events. 4:51. night at the raceway turns violent. an update on willie nelson after cutting short a concert tour. breaking news out of the mexico, at least four people shot and killed in acapulco. that city is a hot spot for drug violence. the deaths come as the violence reached new heights. more than 2,000 murders in june alone. the country's deadliest month in 20 years. plus, china says it will cut off imports of north korean coal

welcome back on this monday morning. there are kids going back to school as we take a live look at san francisco. palo alto and fremont. watch out for them as you begin your day. at 4:54, moving on to a developing story in west africa, authorities say gunmen killed at least 17 people in a terror attack in burke that faso about 9:00 on sunday night. the gunman opened fire on a restaurant in the nation's capital. no one claimed responsibility.

night at the races became the site of a shooting in wisconsin. >> gunman shot and killed three people. about 5,000 people watching that racing event sunday. witnesses say the shooter walked up to the victims at a concession stand. investigators looking for that suspect. >> it's a difficult situation. and i'd feel a lot better if there's a way to feel better if we had the suspect in custody or we knew more about who this was. >> now, officials believe rival gangs from milwaukee and chicago may be behind the shooting. those gangs have caused problems in the past. the victims are believed to be from illinois. mean while, willie nelson says he is doing fine after cutting a show short in utah. >> willie is doing great, actually. we have to cut the show short. we wanted to thank you for coming out and make sure that everybody gets home safe. what's that? we love willie, too!

deadly shooting on the southbound lanes of 880 in the east bay. >> that's right. want to check in with mike in a moment. first "today in the bay" live on the scene right now with the very latest. this is at lewaling, sharon? >> reporter: that's right. we have an update from the chp officer and he said this is where it all happened. he allowed us to come closer to the scene and what we know is that there were two cars involved. one car, let's take a look at video that we shot earlier today. you see left behind on highway 880 right now. and that is why this whole area is shut down. southbound on highway 880. what we know so far the chp officer just told us is that there was another vehicle that was a white vehicle that's all they have the description of the suspect vehicle with four people inside. one of the passengers shot at
