decades. >> it's been known to happen. >> kari has a look at the forecast. >> just in time for school to start for a lot of kids. l let's take another look downtown as we start out with temperatures at the 62 degrees. heading up to 79 degrees. more time spent outside as we look at our temperature trend. for the morning in the lower 70s by 11:00 and it continues to warm up from there. concord will be up to 86. san francisco at 65. mike is tracking one big issue for the north bay. >> it will be there all morning. not here. this is fine. south of the golden gate bridge is fine. the coastline in jenner is where we're watching this closure because of an overturned fuel tanker that happened overnight.

that is a big issue for the roadway and the environment. we'll track that. not a major commute issue because that's far north. a nice, easy drive time. >> thank you, mike. shots fired on i-880 in the east bay. the second time in two days and just a few miles apart. our team has been researching this throughout the night. detectives talking to them this morning. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell live in hayward this morning. our investigator is linking these cases, bob? >> reporter: not as of yet. chp says it's too early to tell what happened. monday is an incident of road rage. they're not sure if this was something else.

this happened around 10:10. the caller was heading northbound when they saw someone hanging out of a vehicle and just south here in hayward. the victim in the car had been hit and a window shot out. northbound 880 to collect evidence presumably looking for bullet casings. take a look at your tv screen and get a sense where last night's shooting was in relation to monday's shooting. the shoot iing monday took plac on southbound 880 in san leandro in that instance a man driving a

car was shot in the head and critically injured. three other people in the car were not hurt. it appears that shooting was sparked by road rage. 880 was shut down for most of the monday morning commute causing problems for people trying to get into work. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right, bob, thank you for that. happening today multiple bay area groups are planning a pro-it test rally at sheriff headquarters following a controversial re-tweet we told you about yesterday morning. the sheriff says the department did not mean to republish the video of an alt-right press conference. >> as tensions continue to rise in the aftermath of the rally in charlottesville, the same groups are planning rallies here in the bay area. another local politician is saying not in my city. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos live in berkeley where one of those events could be taking place as early as next weekend. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and marcus.

i went on facebook and saw the background on this planned event online and it's called going to take place on august 27th. similar groups have held events he here. they've gotten out of hand and that's why the mayor of berkeley says he doesn't want to see these events take place in light of what took place in charlottesville. i want to pull up the excerpt where he said, quote, i think residents understand the extremely difficult position berkeley finds itself in, made even more so by dealing with an amorphous group with no specific organizers. i want to reiterate that we will not allow our community to be terrorized by a small band of white supremacists whose ideology of hate is a losing one. berkeley is proud of its multiculturalism and diversity, and we will continue to stand united against those who want to

divide us. that same weekend another group called patriot prayer, and on their facebook page describes itself as a group against big government and corruption, has pertained a rally, part of the golden gate national recreation area. democratic leader nancy pelosi weighed in on that decision with a statement saying, quote, i am deeply alarmed by the hateful and dangerous nature of this event. its timing so soon after the horrors in charlottesville, and the serious questions over whether the national park service is at all equipped to ensure public safety during a white supremacist rally. the nps should re-evaluate its decision and its capacity to protect the people during the rally. the alt-right are will hold a march on google following the google decision to fire an engineer who explained the differences between females and male engineers while their male counterparts outnumber them in that field. when it comes to berkeley and a permit has not been obtained by the group to hold the event next weekend. we're live in berkeley, pete

"today in the bay's" edward lawrence reports lawmakers are from both side are pushing back. >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. it's foggy here but lawmakers say the president needs to be clear that there's no place to tolerate neo-naziism or white supremacists. instead the president chose to say the counterprotesters were just as responsible for the violence that happened in s charlottesville, havevirginia. they did not expect he would answer these questions. president donald trump defiant, passionate, saying both sides were to blame for the violence that led to the death of one woman in charlottesville, virginia. >> what about the alt-left that came charging, as you say, the alt-right, do they have any semblance of guilt? let me ask you this, what about

the president's manufacturing council. president trump saying they didn't take the job seriously. reporting in washington, edward lawrence. back to you. and coverage of the story continues later on this morning on "today." ohio governor john kasich and frequent trump critic is set to talk with matt and savannah. new this morning at 5:08, b.a.r.t. is cracking down on fare evaders. last night officers were out pa trailing the daly city station. people were stopped for not getting a ticket. one person was arrested. 25 citations were issued last night alone. b.a.r.t. has been under pressure to catch fare evaders. it comes after a group of teenagers stormed trains and robbed riders earlier this year. and new this morning police are looking for three men suspected of installing suspicious devices on an atm ins inside a gas station. now this is surveillance video of those suspects we're looking at right now entering the 76

near highway 101. two of the men distracted the store clerk while the third installed the device. the clerk discovered the item after they left. police are not saying what the device does but if you recognize these men call novato police. and new video and this is pretty cool here. you can see cal students set a new guinness record for forming a huge "c" on the field. you're looking at time lapse, more than 7,000 new incoming students took part. i'm sure they had a lot of fun. everyone had to wear blue, dark blue, and they qualified, stand there for five minutes to get a picture of that. the new record nearly doubled the previous one at the university of tennessee. pretty cool. and we're coming up on 5:10 on this wednesday morning as we get a look outside in the south bay, it is 62 degrees. a few clouds as you head out the

door. some fairly mild temperatures at 61 degrees in the east bay as we take a live look in oakland. already a lot of people on the roadways and our high temperatures will be reaching into the mid-70s in oakland as we will start out with some cloudy skies and we'll see that clearing up by noon. it'll be 65 degrees at lunch time and then as you get ready to head home from work it's going to be in the lower 70s. now mike takes us through the tri-valley with an early problem for commuters. >> folks travel earlier coming out of the tri-valley or the altamont pass. most of the areas -- most of our viewers are looking just fine. this is an early problem for folks out of tracee and stockton. as you come into livermore reports of a disabled vehicle right in that area in the middle of the roadway. that's why we see traffic building there. holding up those east. a van reported with a fire there is an overheated engine. that's the frito-lay truck.

5:14 on your wednesday and for a lot of kids heading back to school today in san jose it's going to be a great one. as we take a live look outside downtown all quiet as of now we're going to break it down by neighborhood going to sap at that teresa as we will start out with some mostly clear skies. low 70s at noon and then look at how nice it will be throughout the day. we will be heating up. >> and right now no delay and b.a.r.t. moves well. a good ride on the morning commute. 5:14. san francisco police say they're facing a surge in car break-ins and they have vice advice for anyone who is a victim. police say they received 132 car burglary calls per day.

police officers responded to those calls less than hatch the time. the department says if you come out and you find that your car window is smashed it's not an emergency and you should not call 911 to report it. >> there's no suspect. if a victim find their car has been broken into, our procedure is they need to call 311, a report immediate ly will be takn over the phone. >> police say 911 calls are reserved for violent crimes that are in the process of taking place. the best thing you can do is contact the police station. new this morning more american teenagers are dying from drug overdoses. a new government report reveals a rise this in the number of overdose deaths between 2014 and 20. this follows a decades long decline. they say opioids is the reason for the jump. researchers say the majority of

overdose deaths were accidental. smoking during pregnancy is on the rise among with depression. a new study analyzed data from more than 8,500 moms to be. one in ten were not depressed. depressed women may need extra help in order to quit. 5:16. five corporate executives have quit president trump's advisory board over controversial comments. >> and scott mcgrew joins us now. we could see more today. >> we could. they've been maybe emboldened by the fact the president has not attacked the latest defectors, the most recent was the head of afl-cio trump has tweeted several times about his advisory council ahead of merck. the heads of boeing has specifically said they would stay.

looking at san francisco now with 60 degrees. i want to show you the trend still cloudy throughout much of the morning. that sun from 1 is 1:00 to 12:00. san jose exciting and some great weather. we'll have temperatures in the 70s. if you're going after school, first pitch rising into the 70s today. very nice and comfortable weather. upper 50s to start and highs reaching into the upper 70s. san francisco in the upper 60s. we're clearing the shelters.

video from the coast guard in 5:25. check out this night vision video from a coast guard in england. take a closer look here and this is a man surrounded on the rock as large ocean waves hitting by the wind. it shows that some of that video of that rescue chopper. rescuers say that person was at the beach in southwest england when a tide came in and smacked him. rescuers couldn't land so one of them was lowered down to that rock after getting had hit by the wave several times, the rescuers did reach the stranded man and dropped him to safety. now the republican candidate the for jeff sessions say alabama senate seat is going to have to win a run-off next month because neither contender in yesterday's special primary received more than 50% of the vote. strange was appointed to replace

sessions in february, facing chief justice roy moore for the gop nomination. the winner will face doug jones in a special election this december. they say they can't afford the hall offered by the university. cal is offering an auditorium which seats about 2,000 people. they have to pay for security costs. this is about $9,000. republicans saying the university is placing an undue burden on conservative speakers and they are asking for smaller venues. >> the state is no longer in a drought. "the sacramento bee" reports councilmembers voted to keep twice a week watering restrictions in place march through october.

and that trend begins today and we're going to talk about the weekend forecast in seven minutes. right now mike is saying hay! >> it's cleared. folks traveling in antioch to walnut creek. we'll take you to the south bay where we hope you don't get tired from the tire in the middle of the road. traffic is light especially that counter commute direction. your commute at the bay bridge, let me show you that. no problems for the maze. in the last three minutes we've seen the cash lanes fill up. fastrak had an early buildup. >> and that breaking news in the east bay for the second time in two days authorities are investigating shots fired on interstate 880. this time in the northbound direction.

>> one of the two people in the car was hit by the glass but neither hit by gunfire. the first shooting happened earlier monday morning on 880 in san leandro. our bob redell is talking with chp. he will have a live report top of the hour. it's 5:32 and new this morning early morning b.a.r.t. riders might have a wrench throws into their commute. transit leaders are considering starting b.a.r.t. later every day. >> kris sanchez is live in fremont and, kris, this could affect the thousands of people. >> reporter: well, yeah, think about it. we can't change what time our work day starts. even though the b.a.r.t. board of directors say they need this hour to get maintenance done dealing with a system wide rebuild and they're trying to serve commuters.

the one-hour delay was already in the work but wasn't to start until next year ahead of the seismic work on the tube. now the board of directors say they may go to the 5:00 a.m. start late this year. b.a.r.t. estimates that would impact about 2,400 early morning riders. it could double the time maintenance workers have to get on to and off their tracks. riders would have to take buses which usually take longer or they could drive which, mike inouye can tell you, is not a faster option always. several workers told us maybe their bosses would be flexible but a later start would limit the jobs they could take. >> i can change my time. i'm changing my time all the way anyway. >> maybe my boss could be flexible but i'm sure it doesn't work like that for everybody. >> it would be a problem if it happened right now because i wouldn't be able to make it to work in san francisco. >> reporter: i posted this poll on twitter. tell us what you think about

that 5:00 a.m. start, that one-hour delay whether it would affect you or not. this is not one of the busiest early morning stations but certainly this will impact a lot of folks and from what we can it tell -- we talked to an electrician, an electriccal worker, a steelworker and health care worker where their start times are not as flexible as a lot of folks. in fremont, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you so much. at 5:34 this morning happening now firefighters searching for the cause of a mobile home fire that killed a man and two children in san jose. it started about noon yesterday at the golden wheel mobile home park near oakland. at first firefighters didn't think anyone was inside but after that fire was out they discovered three burned bodies. the victims believed to be a grandfather, granddaughter and her friend or a relative. neighbors who saw the diehl are devastated by what happened.

>> kids were in there. >> the names of the victims are not being released at this time. at 5:35 happening today a legal battle over self-driving it technology heads to a san francisco courtroom. in february google's self-driving car company sued uber. the accuses the former employee of downloading documents related to its self-driving mapping system. that employee left to start a self-driving truck company which uber has since acquired. uber denies having access to those files. 5:35 happening today. an east bay husband and wife from mexico are scheduled to be deported tonight. this after losing their last battle to stay in the you states. maria mendoza sanchez received the call from senator dianne feinstein personally. federal and immigration agents denied their last request for a stay. maria, her husband and their 12-year-old son will fly from s

it fo to mexico tonight. their adult-aged children will stay behind. the couple lived in the u.s. for nearly 25 years. we spoke with mendoza sanchez last night who says it has been a difficult time. >> i'm leaving tomorrow. there's nothing i can do. it's not easy but leaving the kids is the hardest. >> the family's attorney does plan to file one more stay request shortly before the family boards their flight. meantime senator feinstein will ask the u.s. senate next month to grant them permanent residence. new this morning the housing market in sonoma county is making big gains and continues to rebound. qu"the press democrat" is reporting the taxable property is at an all-time high valued at $85 billion. that's 5% more than last year. we investigated and the height of the recession nearly half of all properties in sonoma

count lost value. today just over 11,000 properties lost value. property values grew the most in the cities of clover dale and cotati. a small change for metering lights on a busy south bay commute corridor. the metering lights will stay on for an hour longer along highway 237. this comes with the west cala r calaveras interchange. from the ramp right now lights will now run from 6:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. to get drivers use d to the change. this week the leaders are set on solid green for that extra hour. >> marcus told you we have traffic flowing onto those metering lights anyway but they're extending them an hour because, as we all know to the south bay, westbound 237 right here is one of the last to show the clearing so they want to keep traffic longer.

you're going it to see a flashing green this weekend in full effect next week. just make sure you knew about that slight change there. hopefully seeing some benefits. no change here except for the fact a disabled van is stuck in the roadway so we have the vehicle and the tire in lanes as you're making southbound 280 to the transition there. it does sound like traffic is flowing smoothly. folks heading down to san jose. the rest of the bay showing a typical commute. metering lights are on. look at the sensor reads. i do want to take you to the north. highway 1 still closed and will be until 1:00 p.m. because of an overturned tanker. 1,600 gallons. that's up in jenner. halfway through our workweek already. >> and already looking to the weekend. >> it's going to be warmer this weekend and we do have another very busy weekend around the bay area. let's start out on saturday at

68 degrees for the coast. still cloudy and foggy and i know you were probably hoping for some warmer temperatures there but that will all be happening in the valley. and for sunday, slightly cooler across the board at 84 degrees inland on sunday. the bay will be at 72 degrees and 65 degrees for the coast. and we will be clearing the shelters this weekend, really exciting event not only in berkeley but all around the bay area we have the full list of all the participating shelters at nbc bay area. i want to focus on berkeley because our ice cream truck will be there and we'll start out with some clouds throughout the morning and then our temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s. you can take your dog for a nice, long walk. now on sunday you may be wrapping up the weekend at the stern grove festival. high temperatures reaching into the mid-60s there but it will be beautiful and sunny and this weekend in napa valley in the mid-80s where friday and saturday and then a little bit cooler sunday with a high of 80

tri-valley. no surprise at 580. the bigger view coming up. >> 5:43 and new this morning a report says hate groups are on the rise in the united states but there are fewer than in recent years. tracking hate groups around the nation now counts 917 hate groups in all 50 states. that's down from a peak of more than 1,000 in 2011 but that's up from 2014 when the number fell below 800. the newest map right here, the three states with the highest population rank had in the top three hate groups. we investigated overnight and discovered per capita none ranked in the top ten. 79 hate groups in california, florida ranked second and texas third. it does not factor in the number of people involved in the groups. happening today a memorial is set for the people killed during violence in virginia this

past weekend. people will honor heather heyer who was killed when a man drove his car in a crowd. the national park service work ing to clean up the lincoln memorial in washington, d.c. take a look at this. someone spray painted graffiti yesterday. the complete message is unclear though it starts with an expletive. a protester who helped topple a confederate statue. we showed you the video yesterday on "today in the ba.". the county sheriff says they're working to identify others involved in the incident and new this morning out of baltimore under the cover of darkness crews removed four confederate statues overnight. monday the city council adepartmented a resolution calling for the immediate destruction of the monument. we did some checking this morning. there are some 718 confederate monuments and statues across the country.

her some with autism dragged from the yard inside to the school building. the reason school officials say they had no other options. first, happening now, new clues into the missing malaysian airliner. newly discovered satellite photos are giving scientists fresh ideas of the location. the photos taken a month after the disappearance show 70 objects drifting. the school district says children won't be let outside during the upcoming eclipse. officials worry the kids will look up at the son. astronomers say if you want to see the eclipse you should buy specially made glasses to prevent eye damage. the eclipse is next monday.

7-year-old student with autism being dragged on the ground by a teacher. this morning his mother outraged and demanding answers. we want to warn you this video is disturbing to watch. it shows that student as you can see there being carried by school staff by his hands and feet. this is in ohio. at one point he was dragged by the ankle into an office. police investigatinging later found out the boy was hitting and kicking and biting others around him on the playground and a teacher says he injured her eye but cameras didn't capture that. the prosecutor decline d to fil charges saying the video is, quote, upsetting and troubling but not every wrong is a crime. that's not how the student's mother sees it. >> there's a difference between an autistic meltdown and a temper tan drum from an angry child. i don't think a lot of people realize that. >> the mother is hoping that video will spark better training for school staff nationwide. officials say the boy was being

combative. >> now to a terrifying ordeal in southern california. dozens of students were attacked by a swarm of angry bees in palmdale. they built a nest inside the class this summer and something agitated them. firefig firefighters used hoses to try to scare the bees away. a major milestone for a special species. the condor discovered in big sur. the condor was born in the wild, so were its parents. this is great news for the species that was pushed to the brink of extinction by poaching, lead poisoning and habitat destruction. the circus is in town in san jose. you may notice the giant blue circus tent in the back lot of the oak ridge mall. circus vargas is back in town focusing on elements of fantasy.

it ended all its animal acts. it runs through september 18th at four different locations and area malls. circus vargas will perform through monday before going to milpitas. >> it takes a lot of balance to do that. 5:57. new housing and development project coming to contra costa county. supervisors agreed to transform a commercial strip with a $100 million mixed use project. it will include nearly 200 housing units and more than 21,000 square feet of commercial space and parking. the project will include parcells on both sides of boulevard way. 5:57. palo alto city leaders are reportedly looking at street lights to address the city's wireless needs. palo alto on line is reporting the city gave the green light to a plan that would install cell and data equipment on 16 street poles and three utility poles. this is just one of several agreements the city has made recently with telecom giants

looking to expand and improve coverage. this comes after residents restricted efforts to add antennas in cell towers. live to the golden gate bridge this morning, more changes coming to the toll plaza. the marin independent journal reports they are moving forward with upgrading some of the toll collection machine ry. the bridge district is planning to build a structure that will have motion sensors, antennas, lights and cameras and probably a lot of access to the tolls out there. most of the equipment above the roadway so they won't have to shut down lanes when they do maintenance. it would replace existing toll plaza. it is expected to be done by 2019. continuing coverage on a story we previewed on "today in the bay" yesterday morning. we're now digging deemer into a study just released that could alleviate congestion along the dumbarton corridor. recommendations to address traffic. some proposals included expanding bus services and possibly rebuilding the
