a very good thursday morning to you. we have been tracking a breaking story four, a deadly vaufser-involved shoot nlgt tri-valley. chain of events that led to officers shooting and eventually killing a man. good morning to you and thanks so much for joining us this early thursday morning. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm markus washington and right now we want to get a look at what's going on with the weather. >> it look good. as you head out the door this morning we're seeing clearing across parts of the inland areas and as we go through the day we're going to see a lot of sunshine. slightly warmer temperatures. we're start oug at 60 degrees in the tri-valley with mainly clear skies. you can see the low clouds in sfrans. it's 58 degrees with our high temperatures today reaching into the upper 80s for concord and antioch as well as livermore.

san francisco today will be at 66 degrees. we'll talk about that range in temperatures and what to expect for the weekend. mike has a possible traffic break on the bay bridge. i think i saw that happening over the last few minutes. this is westbound 80 moving smoothly now. flashing lights were clustered on the tower around the bend here. it looks like the flashing lights have just cleared and there's some flashing lights over here there was still one lane blocked it looks like westbound but there are no major delays getting out of oakland heading over towards san francisco. the rest of the bay moves pretty well. another issue may be going on in los gatos. i'll bring that to you in a minute. >> a chaotic scene in livermore, police open a fire for killing a man avenue allegedly lit his home on fire. it happened near pore tollal, close to 580 last night. >> today in the bay pete suratos

is live at that scene. pete, what have you been able to learn about what led up to this deadly confrontation? >> reporter: what we're learning from livermore police that the suspect, now deceased suspect was acting bizarrely and challenging folks in the area to fight. it want to show you behind me a very active scene here put see livermore police as well as incident command set up right near that 1300 block of via des taye. they're telling whus they did arrive to the seen the suspect went back into the home and that's when things took a turn. we'll show you that new cell phone video coming into the newsroom of when the suspect decided to light his house on fire. now, according to livermore police, they said they tried to negotiate with the armed suspect who fired several shots from inside his home while make suicidal statements. he walked out of home shortly after that fire was lit hold a shotgun and that's when officers fired shots at him. suspect was pronounced dead on the scene following that shooting. here's one witness explaining what he saw.

>> we were told by the police to take cover and shelter and then we heard some shots fired and that's about it. then came out afterwards and the fire got really big, it started -- it engulfed the trees next door and got really big. >> reporter: crews were able to put out that fire inside the home and we can thwart morning that no officers are injured and police did not locate anyone else inside of that home. now the identities of both the officers and the suspect have not been released but as you can see behind me this case is still active and it's still under investigation. we're live in livermore, pete suratos for today in the bay. >> all right thank you. it is 4:33. more break news overnight this time in san jose. police are looking for a suspect just two blocks from lincoln high school. it all started after deputies pulled over a pickup trick on brooklyn and bass com near san carlos at 2:00 in the morning. after stopping that truck the

driver reportedly took off running. deputies realized the truck was stolen. they're still looking for the suspect but as of 30 minutes ago, they had taken down a perimeter that they set up in that neighborhood. the police activity should not impactli impact lincoln high school. a san jose police officer is hurt after an overnight crash. this morning the lieutenant says the officer is in the hospital and is in stable condition. authorities say the patrol car and another vehicle crashed. this happened across the street from mount pleasant high school around 1:20 this morning. we reached out to see what led up to this crash. they have not gotten back to us with that information. happening today, a santa cruz family who lot of of the their loved one in a crash on highway 17, daniel mcguire was killed back in 2014 when an out of control big rig started a multicar crash. his family sued the trucking companies tied to the crash

alleging the driver was inadequately trained. the incident also inspired new legislation. today's news conference season schedule for 11:00 a.m. also new this morning, take a look at that mug shot. concord police hoping to bring it to you here, you there go, concord police say they're looking for this man in connection with a bank robbery. he's been identified as 45-year-old david glover. he's accused of robbing the u.s. bank on port chicago highway yesterday afternoon. police were already looking for him before that bank robbery in another case. tim cook is the latest koechlt chief could weigh in on president trump's attack. strong words from one of the world's biggest leaders to his staff and what he said to them and what he's trying to do to bring attention to the issue. uber testing out a new feature that puts the driver in the driver's seat when it comes to where and when to pick up and

85 degrees degrees as we move over to the east bay, pleasant ton 87 and oakland 75. antioch up to 87 degrees. san carlo 78 and for daly city expect a high of 68 degrees, 65 in the outer sunset and you'll get a little bit more sun there today, 82 will be the high in santa rosa and napa. as you're looking out the window, looks cloudy but we will see some sunshine today and with temperatures going up a few degrees you'll be comfortable wearing some short sleeves and somebody shorts today and it will definitely feel like summer by this afternoon. and now we have the phillys in town with the giants today and the first pitch will be at 7:15. we'll be at 63 degrees, a few more clouds in the mix if you're out there at at&t park. and we're so excited about clear the shelters this weekend, we'll be out in the berkeley and with our ice cream truck you'll be able 10 to joy the cool temperatures and some ice cream with our high temperatures

electric vehicles. our bob redell is heading to the science center right now. we'll have more coming up at 5:30. and for details now, we looked into the prevalence of solar energy overnight. according to pg&e's website, more than 250,000 customers have solar panels installed. that generates more than 1700 mega watts of power. highway 101 in palo alto and new this morning we have some alarming numbers about distracted drooifg. turns out more californians are using their phones while driving but the number of tickets being issued is dropping. our investigation overnight shows the number of drivers using their phones has been on the rise since 2015 with the 2% increase last year. most were young drivers ages 16 through 24. but citations have declined in half since 2011. that's when more than 450,000 tickets were given. in 2015, around 269,000 tickets were issued. accidents and deaths sadly are

on the rise as well. nationally nine people die every day, just due to a distracted driver. put those phones down. this morning southern california authorities not saying much about the car thief and bizarre and lengthy chase and thenned his life after a long stand off eventually atop a crane. spectacle played out last night in the mafld commute. after chase a stolen suv into the port of los angeles, you see the driver ditching that car and then he he climbed up a crane. at one point he also took off all of his clothes. then at about 9:30 at night, it went on for a while, police say he either slipped ore jumped plummeting about 160 feet to the ground. happening today, a pivotal vote in lexington, kentucky, could push to relocate two statues. they're citing the recent violence for moving the stat

also new this morning, los angeles is steft testing airport body style cameras for the subway system. the two-day pilot program ends today. a metro spokesperson says unlike the airports, passengers do not have to remove jackets or shoes. l.a. is weighing whether or not to install those scanners permanently. a follow-up to a story we've been reporting all summer, the dying leopard shark by the hundreds here in the bay area. we're now learning the main suspect is a brain-eating pair site. chronicle reporting they have been studying the dead sharks and found that is the cause. more than a dozen have been found dead on the beaches since march. they're trying to figure out how the pair site got here in the first place. alarming new statistics on teen drug use. deadly overdotes on a steady rise. the centers for disease control and prevention track the death rate after the past two dek decades.

breaking news. frightening moments in livermore neighborhood after officers opened fire killing a man. we're live at the scene with information just coming to our newsroom minutes ago. good morning everyone, thanks for joining us i'm markus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's get a look at the forecast. a lot of kids are headed to school today, kari. >> and we will have great weather for that first day of school or if you're already into several days of school start the earlier this week. we're take a live look outside in san jose with a mostly clear start and our temperatures will be at 61 degrees as you head out the door heading up to 84 degrees today. as we look at how those temperatures trend, it will be cool to start, maybe a light jacket needed as you head out the door but make sure the name is on the tag you'll be taking it off later on today. and mike has more trouble on the highway 17. that's right. heading down toward the santa cruz mountains. most of the bay just fine and then typical little slowing southbound 85, usually there's a crew moving around in that area.
