but we have this. they have cleared one lane of southbound 17 right around the cat statue and the restaurant down there. folks are familiar with the area and we see slowing as mu more crews arrive. there was one crash blocking the lane and we may have more lights for a distraction. we're look at your travel times here in the north bay, no major issues. folks leaving vallejo traveling to napa some slowing at that braj. back to you. back to the breaking news we've been bridge you since we came on the air at 4:30 if the a deadly officer-involved shooting in the tri-valley this morning still a very active scene. it started last night in livermore in a mobile home park near the city's municipal airport. you see a fire started as well. today in the bay pete suratos is there right now. he's been talking to investigators. so there was a fire, a man inside and then shots fired too, pete? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. pretty bizarre chachb events and

we just got an update from livermore police. i'll get to what they're telling us this morning, but they can't confirm that this suspect, this now deceased suspect was acting in an erratic fashion prior to that shooting. you can see behind me an active scene where livermore police are still here and expect to be here for several hours. officers say that when they arrived on the scene that the suspect retreated into a mobile home and that's when things took a turn. but let's get back to that cell phone video we showed you in the last half hour of when that subject decided to light that mobile home on fire. now, according to livermore police ha they're telling thus morning they said they tried to negotiate with the armed suspect for nearly two hours, and that started just before 9:00 p.m. last night. they said the suspect was said to be firing several shots from inside of that home while making suicidal sfamts. they said he walked out of the home shortly after the fire was lit hold a shotgun and that's when officers fired shots at him. that suspect is pronounced dead on the scene. now here's officers explaining a little bit more in detail of why

they decided to fire those shots. >> still really early in the investigation to be able to tell what directions his rounds was going, they could hear the rounds being shot, we don't know where they were headed. we're still investigating that right now. >> reporter: all under investigation as you can hear there. fire crews were able to put out the fire inside of that home and no officers were injured and police did not locate anyone else in that home. we're back out here live, you see the officers there on the scene, that's the incident command truck and the police cars blocking off that block where this incident took place. now the ieftsdentities of both officers and the deceased suspect have not been released as this case is still under investigation. >> thanks for the latest update. new this morning deputies are looking for a suspect just two blocks from lincoln high school in san jose. this all started after deputies pulled over a pickup truck on brooklyn near bass cam and san

core laos around 2 this morning. after 1207 stopping that truck the driver took off running. they realized the truck was stolen and the driver took off but as of 30 minutes they had taken down a perimeter in that neighborhood. deputies's activity should not impact lincoln high school which opened yesterday. also new this morning, a san jose police officer is hurt after an overnight crash. this morning a lieutenant says the officer is in the hospital and is in stable condition. reporteders say the patrol car and another car crash happened across the street from mount pleasant high school at 1:20 this morning. we've reached out to the police department to ask what led up to the crash and they haven't gotten back with us with that information. and continuing coverage now. a powerful show of support in charlottesville. thousands gathered to mourn the loss of heather heyer, she was killed in a car attack during last weekend's violent rally. meantime from business leaders to lawmakers, a course

"today in the ba . almost 5:14 as we start off this morning we're going to take a live look outside in fremont. mostly clear skies, already busy on the roadways. as we get a look at you're temperature trend starting out at 9:00 this morning, many people out and about, it will be in the upper 60s and we're rising into the low 80s today. so it will be warmer today than it was yesterday, even warmer tomorrow. we'll talk about that weekend forecast coming up in five minutes. travel time is not so bad, some slowing through livermore, that are project is around milpitas, that continues but no major problems for the tri-valley. we'll show you that coming up. 5:14 and new this morning you're looking at video of the coast guard rescuing a woman off the of the oregon coast. this happened yesterday. turns out that woman has not been seen nor heard from since saturday. police eventually found her -- found her car which led rescuers to her. she was stranded on some cliffs near a beach.

independent system operator which provides electricities for utilities, monday will be a challenge. we have been in touch with the iso over the past few weeks and they tell us that the solar eclipse will reduce solar energy production by 60% statewide. that's about 6,000 mega watts, that's enough power for 6 million homes. for the past year the iso, the cpuc, and local utilities like pg&e have been planning thousand make up for that are lost energy production during the three hours that the moon will be blocking out the sun. as a matter of fact, pg&e will hold a news conference later this morning to detail those plans. for example, relying on other resources like hydropower which is able to ramp up quickly. the the mercury news reports in palo alto the mayor there is asking res doents reduce electrical consumption during the eclipse to reduce greenhouse

gases as the power turns on to make up for the loss of solar energy. >> thanks, bob. happening today a santa cruz familiar wloi lost their loved fwhun a deadly crash on highway 17 is expected to announce a settlement in the wrongful death suit. danny mcgwire was killed in 2014 when an out of control big rig started a multiple car crash. his family sued the trucking companies tied to that crash alleging that the truck driver was inadequately trained. the incident also inspired new legislation. today's news conference is schedule for 11:00. we have new details this morning on a bad crash in oakland. fire officials say 5 people are hospitalized, the victims three adults and 2 minors, four are in critical condition, not clear who. now, initially authorities say six people were hospitalized. that crash happened been 8:45 last night near 55th avenue and international boulevard. officials say they think one car

looking back to 2011, that number is actually higher. 76,000 cell phone tickets issued then. but to put it in perspective consider the numbers that are looked up from the dmv, there are 25 million licensed drivers in the state of california. now, santa clara county supervisor authored california's cell phone bill says that the fines are just too low. at $20 it's worth the risk to drivers to use those cell phones behind the wheel and not worth the trouble for law enforcement to pull folks over. but the financial price is just one way that it could cost you. distracted driving contributes to 10% of deadly accidents, 18% of injury crashes, 16% of all crashes reported according to the national highway traffic safety administration also known as nhtsa. now rewe want to know have you t

see some mostly clear skies this morning. we're going to break down san jose by neighborhood know going to willow glen as we'll be in the upper 60s by 9:00, upper 70s already by noon. quickly warming temperatures today, you may have to turn on the air-conditioning for a little bit. i'll talk about what's ahead as our temperatures continue to heat up coming up in five minutes. and tracking the north bay commute you notice highway 37 at the bottom there little bit longer. there's a crash near skaggs island that may cause more congestion just past the bridge. little slow out of vallejo. and 5:44, new this morning southern california authorities are still not saying much about a car theft in the bizarre and lengthy chase. he ended his life after a long standoff atop of a crane. the spectacle played out yesterday in the mid of the evening commute. after chase a stolen suv into the port of los angeles, police say that driver ditched the car and climbed the crane as you see

right there. at one point he took off all of his clothes and then at about 9:30 p.m. police say that he either slipped or jumped plummeting about 160 feet to the ground. new this morning, muni's efforts to repair its most troublesome elevators are hit a sflag. disabled advocates say some muni elevators have chronic problems and they're out of service more often than not. according to chronicle, transit leaders know which are the most in need of repairs but they're having trouble hiring qualified technicians. the president is speaking out against his political opponents and the news media this morning. scott bays zo maybe one in the same what we are talking about here. >> news media political opponents they do seem like president trump lumps those two together, trump attack democrats this morning saying he never said natzis and counterprotesters were morally equivalent. he didn't. he said he wouldn't compare the more raflt either.

he wouldn't put them on a moral plain, in his words. he also attacked fake news this morning saying the public is learning even more so how dishonest the fake news spt they totally misrepresent what i say about hate, bigotry, et cetera, shame. we of course have been letting the president use his own words running sound bites for you over and over in tuesday's exchange in the trump tower. trump's coauthor of his best selling book the art of the deal to which trump refers often is predicting he will resign soon. tony schwartz says he inspects trump will step down by fall. schwartz writes the circle is closing at blinding speed. trump is going to resign and declare a victory before muler in congress leave him no choice. in these trying times let me remind that you other countries have problems too. australia is in the midst of it's own political crisis and it's a strange one. there's a law in australia that says you can't hold high office

if you're a citizen of more than one country. you can't be a dual citizen in stralial and say great brait britain. but australian lawmaker after australian lawmaker are discovering they are dual citizens and they didn't even know it. australia's deputy prime minister said his parents had citizenship in new zealand but he didn't know. they're equivalent of the secretary of interior didn't know his italian mother was an italian citizen when he was born and a member of parliament just found out even though she didn't have a relationship with her father who was born in scotland she found out she may have uk citizenship. >> my parents divorced when i was 8 and my mother raisedmy. i had very little contact with my father throughout his life and he died nine years ago. >> it's a bizarre problem but it's become quite serious because some people in the australian government may need to step down. now, markus and laura, i will

quickly so expect a little bit more sunshine today. right now it's 61 degrees in san francisco and oakland as you get ready to head out. also 61 in san jose. not a bad start with our high temperatures just a little bit warmer than it was yesterday and as you check out the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, you'll see that areas away from san francisco and the coast will be heating up. we're going to be heading up to 89 degrees in concord and antioch today. napa 82 degrees, oakland 75 and palo alto up to 80 degrees. we start out with some clear skies and we know that it's going to be a warmer day so go ahead and grab the short sleeves and shorts, that will help keep you comfortable today especially as we make it into the mird and upper 80s inland. for the first dave school for my son and a lot of kids heading back today, looks like it will be a great one. we'll keep the weather nice and cool to start. at recess you may still need some long sleeves but it will feel like summer by the time they head out of school. make sure their name's on the tag of the jacket and you'll

want to make sure they bring that home too. if you're heading out to the giants game later this evening it is going to be very cool. you'll need more than a light jacket. we'll start out at 63 degrees, breezy, cloudy, and cool conditions and we're looking ahead to the solar eclipse on monday. it will be cloudy, at least for san francisco and along the coastline. for the inland areas we'll start to get some clearing, looks like we'll have a nice clear view for that. as we head over to mike, you're still keeping tabs on what's happening out there. >> that's right. south bay is starting to slow a little bit of a build and we're tracking that crash, 17 at the cats restaurant. so far the slowing has not shown up again on the sensors. i'm tracking that. meanwhile, as i'm skraning that report i get two more reports of crashes one on the peninsula and this westbound 92 alt 280. there's that tunnel flit don't know if it's in the tunnel chp still has to get but it sounds like there's some injuries possible and a number of vehicles involved. a trauk crashing into another car there and folks helping out. there will be a lot of activity, not a lot of slowing.

purchased a home farm in maryland and a neighbor immediately put up a confederate flag. he says that his other neighbors put up american flags in response. happening today, a woman accuse of killing her best friend after running over her with her car is due in court for a plea allergy. she dmu court in just a few hours at 9:00 a.m. investigators say she intentionally hit and killed her best friend back in june. investigators say the two had been drinking before hand. also happening today, a driver charged in the deadly shooting of another driving driver during a road rage incident in pennsylvania heads to court. david definiter is charged with first degree murder. police say he shot and killed 18-year-olddy anca robertson in john june. police say the two tried to merge into a single highway lane before he shot her in the head and then drove off. he turned himself into police a few days later. 5:56.

state officials are ordering sacramento county to stop using an intake office as a place for foster children ton sleep. the children's receiving home is where children come when they're waiting to be placed in a foster -- with a foster family. the building isn't licensed for kids to stay overnight but children sleep on the floor nip way, sometimes for weeks. the county says that their issue is a lack of resources and not enough foster families. child safety advocates say it's unacceptable. >> they're housing abused and neglected children like old office furniture or planks of lumber in an office and that could not be more wrong. >> the county now has 45 days to find another plan for these children. new this morning, as our school year begins make sure your kids aren't skipping breakfast. the new british study suggests that kids who don't eat breakfast regularly may be missing out on important nutrients. they had a higher intake of foley, iodine according to kids who skipped the morning meal.

girls and older kids are were more likely to skip breakfast. we all know it's bad to look directly at the sun but next monday people across the country will be tempted to do just that as we look up to see the solar eclipse. experts say regular sunglasses are not enough to protect your eyes. instead, you need solar glasses. they black 99% of the sun's harmful uv raise and it's the only safe way to look directly at the sun. doctors say do doh it yourself solar filters are not recommended. >> people do a lot of strange things. they take a dallas with tea in it or coffee or something to put in front of it, not safe. >> yeah, don't try to do it yourself. if you're buying solar flasz, make sure it has the certification on it. it's iso 12312-2. also don't put on solar filters and then look through de knock cue lars. that's unsafe. maybe just look to the ground. >> exactly. 5:58, hafg tnt today warrior
