the bay." kris sanchez is live and damian trujillo has been talking to investigators. let's begin our coverage with damian. >> reporter: good morning. it seems like the crime scene here is about wrapping up. police have gathered the evidence they could. about to reopen taylor street. a very tragic set of circumstances as two off-duty oakland firefighters were shot, one of them fatally by the suspect. another crime scene about two blocks away where one of the suspects was apprehended at this point and trying to figure out if there are more suspects involved in this shooting here near japan town. here is the latest information we do have. police are not saying anything official about the profession of the victim with you sources do tell me they were, in fact, off-duty oakland firefighters. they attended a weekly festival at gordon biersch brewery with
6:02 am
other firefighters. when they walked out for some reason they were confronted by a man with a gun. it is unclear if words were exchanged or what the circumstances were before the shooting. police say the suspect then took off. then there was a short pursuit before police caught up with him. it is unclear again if he is the only person connected with this murder. earlier this morning i spoke with police and a band member performing at the family friendly event just before the shooting. >> we had a lot of neighbors calling in. we were able to detain the adult male in the vicinity so we're still investigating to see what his role is. >> it was pretty shocking. i saw two people laying down on the ground next to my car and a number of people around and then emergency vehicles showed up soon after that. >> reporter: at this point there is no motive. police don't why the shooting happened and also at this point
6:03 am
it appears to be just a random act of violence. it is unclear if more suspects might be out there. police are surprised this is happening in japantown, a peaceful area of san jose. i'm dame, "today in the bay." all right, damian, thank you. and our coverage continues with "today in the bay's" kris sanchez who is live at valley medical center. that's where the large procession ended early this morning for the fallen firefighter. surely an emotional scene there. >> reporter: right. and this is a sprawling campus there are lots of ways into the valley medical center and out of so the firefighters who want privacy certainly could have gotten away. we saw firefighters walking away from the hospital. duty calls and likely they will have to go back on the job at some point regardless of how the condition changes for the firefighters who is still here valley medical center. they all made their way here to valley medical center in san jose in a procession overnight
6:04 am
from the and then from regional medical center. as damian reported the firefighter here has very serious injuries and his fellow firefighter did make it after that shooting last night. it appears at this point to be rather random. the san jose police officer told me that he expect any of the oakland firefighters who are here to have much to say. this is such a tragedy for the department and those two firefighters who were shot, certainly the newest members. >> if they change their minds, if they do stop in, they want to have something to say, we will share that with you. in the meantime we'll respect the privacy and give them time. are here in san jose oakland firefighters. we don't know whether they were just here for that event or were among the firefighters who live in a community other than the one they work. we certainly will try to get more details as this timing is right with the oakland fire department. in san jose, kris sanchez,
