it is monday morning and it is eclipse day. everyone will be looking up in a few hours. live look outside this morning at fremont but you'd better make sure you have the special glasses. otherwise you'll hear all day, don't look at the sun. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm marcus washington. it is the day that we have all been talking about. eclipse day is here. >> of course everyone wants to know will it be cloudy? and that is going to be the really big thing and a key factor in whether or not you'll be able to see it here in the bay area. it does look like it will be cloudy in spots. we are starting out with some clouds this morning and i want to show you where that area of totality will be as it moves across the u.s.

now we will are at least 75% coverage of the moon over the sun. when we reach that peak time we will be able to see some darkness here in the bay area and will have some cooling temperatures. an early look at the cloud cover and what we're expecting clouds near the coast in san francisco, most of sonoma county, marin county, and also as you head down towards half moon bay. and as we go throughout the morning the clouds will start to retreat back towards the coast and some inland areas will get some clearing. so that will be the main thing we'll be watching as we go through the morning and the time that we'll have the peak coverage there be at about 10:15 this morning. we'll talk more about that and what to expect as we head over to mike. you're reporting a car fire? >> we are. earlier reports of a car fire in the east bay. look, the speed sensors are what you would expect including the

northbound 880 around auto mall parkway. however, i got word the car itself is on the right-hand shoulder. the right two lanes have been cleared. our live camera pointed in that direction. it's hard to zoom in that far. a little activity. we will track that and a reminder if you're driving 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. don't wear the solar glasses because they're too dark to see. more on that. back to you. and happening now anticipation is growing this morning. we are just hours away from the first solar eclipse in the u.s. since 1979. here in the bay area you'll only be able to see a partial eclipse. >> but in some places as you see on the map that we show you here the path of totality. those locations will get several minutes of darkness. plenty of people here will still gather for the big event. "today in the bay's" thom jensen with what we can expect in the

bay area. >> reporter: people have seen a total eclipse say it's a sight like no others. >> it's surreal. other worldly. >> reporter: people still will head outside and flock to viewing sites to see the phenomenon for themselves. >> it doesn't happen very often so it's neat for them to see it. >> the eclipse only happens once in forever. >> reporter: the space and science center opens up free of charge at 8:00 a.m. where people can view from the observation deck or watch a live nasa tv feed in its theater. astronomers say it's a must-see show. >> the most incredible event and it's over so quickly. >> reporter: it lasts about three minutes. the moon will block 60% to 70% in the bay area. some people are traveling to spots along the 70-mile-wide swath from oregon to south carolina to see a total eclipse. >> that's casper right over

there. >> reporter: mark matthews is in one of those locations in casper, wyoming, where an influx of tourists have driven hotel prices out of the solar system. >> $385 a night. >> reporter: ten times the price for that room but there are bargains for another eclipse hot commodity. >> how much are your glasses? >> they're $3. >> reporter: with glasses in hand there's only one thing that can hold back this eclipse. >> hopefully the weather is good enough so we can see it. locally where are the best places to view the eclipse? we bring in meteorologist kari hall for a closer look. >> we'll have some clouds and fog along the coastline and that will be the area we'll still have some fog throughout much of the morning. i want to show you what the computer models are doing with cloud cover at the time of the start of the eclipse. we do see that there will be some clouds for the coastal areas. while we will get some sunshine

and the darkness as we head through about the 9:00 or 10:00 hour for many of the inland areas so that will be something that we will have to really watch for with the visibility and the cloud cover as we head throughout the morning and temperatures will be cooling off as well. a lot of interesting things will be in effect. we'll be talking about that coming up in my next forecast. >> sounds good. we look forward to that, kari. >> in the east bay astronomers will open their doors for free. exactly what will you be able to see here in the bay area? >> you'll notice a dimming in the light of the sun. i say it looks crisper. i think the more notable effect is the shadows will look sharper or modified. it's different than usual. >> the space and science center will be open from 8:00 this morning until 1:00 this afternoon. you can view the big event from the eclipse observation deck or

good morning. i'm landon dowdy live at cnbc world headquarters today's top business headlines. a struggle out of the gate today. markets are coming off a negative week amid the white house turmoil, fed minutes and the terror attack in spain. falling for two straight weeks and the nasdaq down for four street. this week housing and durable goods, dropping 76 points friday to 21,674. the nasdaq slipping. hbc is dropping its vibe virtual reality headset by $200. weeks after facebook made a similar move for its goggles. the vibe now cost $599, $200 more. they have been sluggish and analysts say the apps haven't been a blockbuster to send hardware flying off the shelves. and offering a special deal

ready for the eclipse for the inland areas. a live look outside in san jose, checking out the temperature trend for campbell. we will be in the mid-60s throughout much of the morning, even a little bit of cooling during the eclipse and then some sunshine later on this afternoon. humidity kicks in. there's a lot of things going on here so you'll want to check out the micro climate forecast on the other side of the break. and a look at observing. not a lot going on here. good past the coliseum. further south watching that car fire in fremont. and new threats from north korea. this as the u.s. prepares for military operations with south korea.

and good morning. a live monday morning here in san francisco. nice and clear. a lot of people will be looking up hoping to see just a glimpse of that eclipse. >> if you haven't been able to find a pair of those coveted eclipse glasses you can have your own personal experience with a total eclipse of the sun forever stamp. a commemorative stamp was unveiled in june. it's selling quickly. they were printed with special ink activated by heat. that's pretty cool. when you press your finger on the image it slowly converts to the moon. when the stamp cools it goes back. >> when you cover it with your

thumb, when you pull your thumb away it will go back to the way it was. you'll never know. >> it will make kids want to write letters. >> hold on to it until the next eclipse. >> a lot of people are asking can you just wear sunglasses -- >> no. >> can you put on two sunglasses, three, no. don't do any of that. have the safe ones that are distributed by the library or wherever you can find them. that's what you want to do to protect your eyes even for us with the 75% totality so that's even more important. there will be more sunshine coming through and we are hoping that the sunshine will be coming through those clouds and everything will be clearing out. this is such a weird situation here where we aren't quite actually sure what exactly will happen because there's not a lot of research in this department. will we get the fog clearing out away from the coastline? normally the sun helps to dissipate some of those clouds, but with today we won't have

much of that sun so we will see if it does clear inland. we're taking a live look outside in san jose. the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen and it feels sticky in the south bay. it's 66 degrees as you step out the door. look at santa rosa at 55 degrees there. so a wide range in temperatures. and as we go through the day our highs will be reaching into the low 80s. san jose up to 80 degrees and 84 degrees in gilroy. and as we move to the east bay a nice day. slightly cooler temperatures than yesterday, up to 84 in danville. 74 in hayward and for the peninsula, 73 degrees. san francisco up to 67. the north bay 76 in mill valley and 78 degrees in santa rosa. as you're looking out the window you see the clouds and want to make sure you grab something that will keep you comfortable like long sleeves or your nice shoes today. probably a little too cool for the sandals.

as we look at what will happen throughout the morning we will see the clouds and fog and, once again, normally the sun helps to dissipate that marine layer but with it being blocked by the moon we are not sure this could completely happen for us and then as we go into this evening we'll start to see some more clouds moving in, a lot more humidity, monsoonal moisture. some storms fire up over the sierra. it will feel more muggy for us. as we go through the forecast, very humid conditions tomorrow after the solar eclipse and we're looking at the rest of the week with some temperatures in the 60s. we are heating up just in time for the weekend. mike, you're saying the car fire is cleared from fremont? >> they cleared the lanes without incident. damage to the car on fire. all lanes have cleared. 880 over at the truck scales around the auto mall parkway.

do before launching an attack. experts say there's no way to know what north korea will do next. >> we never know which way he's going to turn. he's not irrational but he is unpredictable. >> and as for those military exercises here are the details. there will not be live fire. the u.s. and south korea will mostly go through computer simulations. there are 17,000 u.s. troops and 50,000 south korean troops involved. it is 4:50 right now. we have continuing coverage this morning on a pretty stubborn fire. flames burning in yosemite national park flared up again this weekend triggering new evacuations. the fire has been burning for nearly a week. at last check it burned over 3,000 acres. it's just 10% contained. investigators continue after two reported crimes at the richmond b.a.r.t. station over the weekend. the arrest -- police arrested a man saturday after four women accused him of threatening them

with a knife. on sunday a man says four other men beat him and stole his phone, smart watch and wallet. there have not been arrests in that case. and happening today regular muni service resumes between the montgomery and west portal stations. the schedule has crews testing five new light rail vehicles with new passenger doors and improve the braking system. officials say that the goal is to replace muni's fleet and add more trains over the next decade. happening today the palo alto city council will consider a plan to improve internet access. the plan called fiber to the know. it would bring connection to access points in neighbors. then people could decide whether or not to hook in. the paper reports the plan would cost between $12 million and $15 million. the hitman's bodyguard is a hit. >> starring ryan reynolds claimed the stop spot after

one of the bay area's most popular spots, ocean beach in san francisco attracts more than 1 million visitors but some may have no idea how dangerous the water is. >> as liz wagner explains officials are paying closer attention to the message they're sending to beachgoers. >> reporter: good morning. as a result of our investigation the agency in charge of safety at ocean beach is taking a closer look at the signs posted along the three-mile stretch of sand warning of rip currents and drowning. some people say the message is murky. the signs fail to say explicitly that ocean beach is not a swimming beach. that's the message federal officials have said. they oversee ocean beach. now the agency is considering a

for us in the weather department just watching to see how the weather plays a role and what we are going to see today and what happens during this eclipse. of course there's not a lot of research on. we are looking at clouds this morning and this is what we're expecting as we go through the next several hours. we are going to see some clearing for some of the valleys. when we're at the peak of the eclipse at 10:16 this morning, there looks to still be clouds in the santa cruz mountains, up the coast up to san francisco as well as the north bay. a new crash in martinez. >> a light traffic flow around the bay. we do see slowing or did about 45 seconds ago. there it is westbound highway 4 just at that 680 interchange. heard about a crash there. no major injuries from what i understand. chp will get us more details. we see the slowing sensors just there just past coming throu
