i'm here at the white house, to talk to the vice president of the united states, mike pence, who happens to be sitting across from me. we're doing this interview -- >> first of all, good morning. >> good morning. matt. >> giving the interview in the roosevelt room. to give people the lay of the land, it is across the hall from the oval office, not too much of a walk from your office. a building or an office that people use here for daily meetings. at least members of the white house staff do. we're going to talk to the vice president in a moment. first, let's go out to the north lawn at the white house. nbc's peter alexander is joining us. we're going to talk about what the president had to say about afghanistan last night. >> reporter: good morning. welcome here to the white house. the president who has blasted the war in afghanistan a total disaster and calling for a sweeping withdrawal. is now taking ownership of the deepening fight, late monday, outlining his long awaited strategy for resolving the 16-year-old conflict, but offering few details about how

he would do it or what victory would look like. ♪ the president in primetime, acknowledging an about-face on afghanistan. >> my original instinct was to pull out. but all my life, i've heard that decisions are much different when you sit behind the desk in the oval office. >> reporter: president trump, now promising to pump additional troops into the war-torn country. not specifying how many and not naming any benchmarks for success. >> conditions on the ground, not arbitrary timetables, will guide our strategy from now on. i will not say when we're going to attack. but attack we will. >> reporter: the long-awaited announcement following months of deliberations. >> a hasty withdrawal would create a vacuum that terrorists, including isis and al qaeda,

charlottesville. loyalty demands love for one another. love for america, requires love for all of its people. >> reporter: calling for peace at home, while making america's longest war abroad even longer. the president's tone on afghanistan, strikingly different from candidate trump. >> we're on track, now, to spend, $6 trillion. $6 trillion. could have rebuilt our country twice. >> reporter: back then, telling matt lauer, under the leadership of barack obama and hillary clinton, the generals have been reduced to rubble. >> reporter: now, backing a pentagon plan and drawing praise from top republicans, including critic lindsey graham. >> i'm very pleesd pleased with this plan and very proud of my president. >> reporter: the president making this declaration, despite offering few details. >> i'm a problem-solver. and in the end, we will win. >> reporter: the speech didn't sit well with one corner of the president's base. immediately after the end of the remarks, breitbart, the

conservative media outlet run by the ousted chief steve bannon, said it flip flopped and reverses course. the president heads out west for another campaign-style rally in phoenix. matt? >> peter, thank you very much. the vice president of the united states is mike pence. he joins us live. mr. vice president, it's nice to see you. >> thank you, matt. welcome to the white house. >> thank you. it's good to be here. let's talk about the president's speech last night. getting applause from a lot of people. a lot of the criticism deals with specifics. he said he would send more troops but didn't give a timeline. or how many. you were key part of the discussions that led to this strategy. how many troops are going? >> the answer to that will be based on the conditions on the ground, which is the fundamental change that our president is taking to afghanistan.

in the past, the last administration in particular, we had a changing strategy and changing tactics on the ground. there were artificial timetables for the withdraw. conditions on the ground, the drive toward a stable and peaceful afghanistan will drive american policy and will drive american decisions in the region. >> you say this is a departures from the past, the obama administration. the editor of breitbart tweeted, trump's afghanistan speech was obama's speech minus the deadline and the details. he says this strategy is similar to the strategy of barack obama. >> the truth is that the last administration engaged in a short-term surge in afghanistan and announced a timetable for withdrawal, literally emboldening the enemies.

when you look at afghanistan and pakistan, that region is home to 20 different terrorist organizations that are recognized by our national government. we haven't been sending a clear signal about american commitment and resolve. after an exhaustive review, taking in putt from generals and key diplomats and state department, president trump sent a message of resolve and commitment. he said to the people of afghanistan, we are with you. to pakistan, they need to step up. he is calling on india to be a better and strategic partner. it's a new strategy driving towards the objective of a stable and peaceful afghanistan in the long-term. >> with all due respect, without numbers and time line, isn't this an extremely open ended commitment on a war that has dragged on for 16 years? >> as you're aware, the pentagon in june made a request for nearly 4,000 troops to deploy in the region.

>> is that the number? ? >> it's yet to be seen. we'll be making that available as soon as the president makes recommendations. what the president has decided is to deploy a sufficient number of troops at the brigade level in afghanistan, to assist the afghans who are at the lead, the tip of the spear in fight, to assist them in the fight against the taliban, al qaeda, isis that are there. and the president is going to make available additional air combat resources, using that brigade personnel to call in the firepower. look, we're there to help the afghans win. the president made a commitment we're going to be there until we win, and the american troops with new rules of engagement can accomplish that there like they're doing in iraq and syria. >> on the subject of pakistan, the president said they have to

do more, stop harboring terrorists, stop allowing terrorists to operate with free reign within their borders. if they don't tow the line, is it possible he'll go one step further and declare pakistan a state sponsor of terrorism? >> pakistan simply needs to do more. we all think back eds to do more. we think back to the time that the mastermind of 9/11, osama bin laden, was found, living in a compound in pakistan, literally within a few short miles of their military academy. we're aware that terrorist elements that attack our troops attack innocent civilians and afghan forces, will bring violence and race across the border. what the president said to pakistan, we're putting them on notice. they have to step up as a partner, if they want to see the united states partner with them, for security in the

region, they need to do more to confront the terrorist organizations that are using, particularly northern pakistan, waziristan area, as a safe haven. >> let me ask you about other items in the news. mr. vice president, have you ever met a neo-nazi or a white nationalist or a white supremacist that you consider to be a fine person? >> never in my life have i met anyone associated with white supremacist or the kkk or neo-nazi movement, would i have anything other than contempt for. >> when the president made the comments. >> i can't remember meeting people in that category. i see them on television. as the president has made clear, we have denounced those organizations. >> but the president said that there were fine people on both sides of that rally in charlottesville. when he said those words, you obviously didn't agree with them. did they offend you, those words? >> say again. >> obviously, the president said he thought there were fine people on both sides of that rally in charlottesville.

when he said that, you just told me you don't agree with that. did those words offend you? >> the president and i were very clear that we denounce bigotry and hatred in all its forms. >> he said there were fine people on both sighs of that rally. >> the president denounced white supremacists, neo-nazis and the kkk repeatedly. he did it when he denounced hate and violence saturday, he did it on sunday and monday. and in a press conference tuesday. there was no moral equivalency. >> and when david duke heard the comments made by the president on charlottesville, he thanked the president. how can you be thanked by david duke, a white supremacist, and not be on the wrong side of the issue. >> i can't account for the views of that person or their conditions.

-- opinions. the president disavowed david duke long ago. and we disavow him, as well. the point is, i think is disconcerting to the american people, are views of the bigots, the president rejected, he likened america to our military personnel. he said when one has patriotism in your heart, there's no room for bigotry or hatred. that's the core of this president. the core of this administration. >> you're a loyal defender of this president and you should be commended for that. other top leaders have rebuked him. top military leaders rebuked him, business leaders have rebuked him for his comments on charlottesville. you continue to defend him. are you putting your loyalty above and in front of what's in your heart and your gut? >> i know this president. i know his heart.

and i heard him. i heard him on the day that the charlottesville tragedy had happened when he denounced hate and violence. in all its forms, wherever it comes. i heard him on that monday. and i heard him like tuesday, like millions of americans did, where he condemned the hate and the bigotry that was evidence there. >> but went back to say there was blame on both sides. >> we'll continue to do that. we understand. we understand that criticism comes with this job. and this president has the kind of broad shoulders to be able to take it. but last night, i thought what you heard the president do, in addition to announcing a new strategy that we believe is going to advance the security and the safety of the american people, advance stability for south asia for this generation and the next. what you heard this president do, and what he will continue to do, to call america to unity. we need to come together around

our soldiers, we need to come together around the most vulnerable. the president says, when we're united, there's nothing the people of the united states can't accomplish. >> i can talk to you for a couple of hours. it's time to wrap. i will say, vice president pence, thank you for your time this morning. appreciate it. >> thank you. we have breaking news overnight. dozens of passengers injured when a train crashed into another train outside of philadelphia. rehema ellis has the latest on this accident. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the accident happened just after midnight. sending more than 40 passengers, injuring more than 40 passengers. and four of them in critical condition this morning. the train's conductor was hospitalized, treated and released. it happened at one of the stations behind me. rattled passengers as they were

winding down their day. overnight, panic and pain for late-night commuters in pennsylvania, after a high-speed train crashed into an empty railcar, parked in a suburban philadelphia station, injuring dozens of passengers. >> we got to the terminal. i stood up to get to my bus on him. smack, hit the other trolley. parked. >> reporter: officials say the inbound norristown train, crashed into a parked train, injuring 42 people. >> my face hit the wall, put a big hole in the wall. i went straight down. i blacked out. there's blood everywhere. the driver is all banged up. one girl was bleeding out of her face pretty bad. >> came in hot or fast, and struck the other train. >> reporter: eight area hospitals are treating patients injured in the collision. the train's conductor was among those hospitalized and later released.

this crash is the third in a string of accidents in the philadelphia area in recent years. in february, four people were injured when multiple cars collided near the 69th street terminal. in may 2015, eight people died and more than 200 were injured when an amtrak regional train, bound for new york city, derailed in philadelphia. the southeastern pennsylvania transportation authority called septa said there will be service disruptions this morning. the cause of this crash is being investigated. >> rehema, thank you. new developments in the search for ten american sailors missing after the collision with the "uss john mccain." and the investigation is taking a new twist. could the ship and others in the

navy fleet been targeted by hackers. janis mackey frayer, good morning to you. >> reporter: that is the "uss mccain" docked over my shoulder. navy officials confirming that some of the remains of the missing sailors have been found in damaged areas of the ship. and the malaysian navy has found some remains at sea. u.s. military divers now searching the flooded areas of the destroyer that collided with an oil tanker monday. it comes amid new details of what possibly went wrong. a navy official said that the warship suffered a steering failure in the strait of malacca. they have a temporary halt of operations for a safety check.

the navy not ruling out a possible cyber attack. admiral john richardson tweeting, possibility of cyber intrusion or sabotage. no indications right now. but review will consider all possibilities. for the seventh fleet based in japan, the fourth major mishap in just six months. in june "uss fitzgerald," another destroyer, collided with a cargo ship. seven sailors were killed. the ship's top two officers, since relieved of their duties. it means american guided missile destroyers are out of action, with tensions at a high with north korea. now, the focus very much on finding the lost sailors and helping their families. >> janis mackey frayer for us. al is so elated by the ellipse, he can't come in there. >> i had fun just watching it on tv. we're going to see the chance of some stronger storms today. this will be in upstate new york, through new york and north-central pennsylvania,

player involved in a rape case that rocked this town years ago. and prosecutors are looking into whether a separate wrongful death lawsuit may be the reason he opened fire. >> it was an ambush attempted murder on our judge. >> reporter: this morning, investigators are trying to piece together a motive why me thannial richmond tried to shoot a judge. he walked from his car into work. the jubdge returning fire with his own handgun, until a nearby probation officer started shooting. >> we got a man down. >> reporter: richmond was shot and killed. >> you have a judge shot in front of his courthouse. that affected me. steubenville has been in the national spotlight before, over a controversial rape trial in 2013, that ended with two high

school football players convicted in juvenile court. one was the son of the suspected gunman, me thannial richmond, who begged in 2013. >> i beg for leniency. >> reporter: that case never came in front of judge brezees. >> she says a motive for the shooting is not known. but court records show he was presiding over a wrongful death lawsuit, over his mother's death. the family attorney, not representing richmond in that case, said he was struggling. >> there was an electric fire that caused her to lose her life. and i know he was set back by that emotionally. >> reporter: richmond's attorneys in the wrongful death case have not returned our

we are back at 7:45 now, with a record verdict in a case that we have been following closely. johnson & johnson has been ordered to pay $500 million in the latest lawsuit over talcum powder and cancer. joe fryer, good morning to you. >> reporter: it's the largest verdict yet against johnson & johnson. a california jury awarded $417 million to a woman who claims that talc in the baby powder gave her ovarian cancer.

but johnson & johnson maintains its products does not cause cancer. >> do you fear you might die here? >> yes. >> reporter: eva says she used johnson & johnson's talc-based baby powder daily for more than 40 years. now, battling ovarian cancer, she is suing the company, saying it failed to warn customers about talc's possible cancer risks. her emotional deposition was played for the jury. >> i thought i was going to die on christmas. >> reporter: her attorney says she was too ill to attend the trial. but on monday, a jury awarded her $417 million. >> my client has done what she is going to do. she's going to die. she's losing that battle. but she is so happy he won the bottle for the other women in this country. >> reporter: johnson & johnson is facing thousands of lawsuits from women claiming the company ignored warnings of talc's tie to cancer.

in four other cases, john meyers award e-- juries awarded more than $4 million. johnson & johnson is appealing those verdicts and plans to appeal monday's decision because the company says, we are guided by the science, that supports the safety of johnson's baby powder. another suit was thrown out by a new jersey judge. >> you don't put a cancer warning on a product that doesn't cause cancer. >> reporter: bart williams, a lawyer for johnson & johnson, spoke to us before this verdict. the company argues the most credible research proves baby powder is safe, pointing to government agencies, including the national cancer institute, which wrote in april "the weight of evidence does not support an association between perennial talc exposure and the ovarian risk of cancer." >> the notion that johnson & johnson would sell that product knowing that it causes ovarian cancer is outrageous.

he was in the hospital because he had a bone infection. don't ask what it means. bone infection. i stayed in the hospital for a month and a half, two monltsths. and in the hospital, i'm going, what's funny about this? that's the way my mind thinks. his mom goes, everything is not a joke. i go, that's a joke right there. i put that in there. >> really? >> and my son was depressed. i said, god did this. you're 14. in three years, you're going to gone, out of the house in college. i'm not going to do anything this summer but sit in this hospital and hang out with you. instead of you being depressed, we're going to make it a party. a snuck in an x-box. i snuck in a flat-screen tv. i put it up. we played video games. we hung out. we made food. and we had the best time ever. and his mom was hating on me.

and the priest i play, michael pu spurlock preaches here at st. thomas. >> usual 50. >> was there a part or a favorite scene that happened when you were shooting? anything in particular? >> there was a scene where michael's out wondering how he's going to save this church that has 12 people in it. his first assignment -- he changed directions in his life midway through life. he was a salesman. decided to be an episcopalian minister. and his first assignment was to shutter this church. and get another assignment where he was, you know, had a congregation with hundreds of people in it. and that's when the refugees show up. he's thinking what to do one night, walking in the field. and god literally speaks to him. never happened to him since. never happened before. but in a real voice, god gave him the plan to use these far r
