what we can expect for the presidents' day. edward? >> reporter: good morning. we saw a scripted president trump. this showed off the unscripted president trump lashed out setting the political world on fire again. passionate and contentious protests before, during and after president donald trump spoke at an arizona rally. during his speech the president unscripted blasted the media, criticized the comments following his speech in charlottesville. >> he didn't say it fast enough. he didn't do it on time. why did it take a day? he must be a racist. >> reporter: he doubled down on building a wall along the mexican border blaming democrats for blocking the funding. >> the democrats would like us not to do it. we have to close down our

the navy removed a fleet commander. jose joseph aucoin. several sailors are still missing this morning. some remains were found but the navy has not said how many bodies have been recovered. authorities at uc berkeley say they are investigating a reported sexual assault on campus saying that a female student reported the attack happened in one of the residential living units. they do not say specifically which one. they say that it happened early tuesday morning. that's all they are telling us at this moment. and investigators are looking into whether a hayward man facing four sexual assault charges has more victims out there. they say he met a woman at a restaurant in june, drove her to a house where he pistol-whipped and sexually assaulted her.

he is also connected into a similar case in 2015. at 5:04 continuing coverage of the terror attacks in spain. this morning the widow of the bay area man killed in the attacks is looking for someone. she wants to find the last person to see her husband alive. heidi nunes tucker says she tried to find a waiter who rushed over to try to help her husband. he was killed in the barcelona attacks. she says she saw a picture on social media showing the waiter's kindness. she and her family want to thank him. nunes tucker is still in barcelona as her husband's body is prepped to come home. at 5:05, confederate statues are removed in other parts of america, activists here are calling for a statue to be removed from a city building. >> more than 1,400 people have demanded a christopher columbus statue be removed from city hall. it says columbus discovered america.

advocates say the statue is obscene and offensive in the native community. >> individuals who may well have had a prominent and important role in history had a dark engagement as well. it's important for us to have policy discussions. >> the mayor has indicated if he wants the statue to come down or not. activists plan to present a petition to the mayor and the city council once it reached 1,500 signatures. not just in the south bay there's a call to remove a monument in san francisco as well. it's at civic center plaza. the 800-ton sculpture which depicts the settlement of california, also depicts a native american fallen in defeat. james kim supports the push to have it taken down. and this morning b.a.r.t. says entrances to the civic center station in san francisco are closed for good. one entrance has been closed

since december after a sewage drain pipe collapsed. that's on grove street near market. now officials say they may permanently shut down. b.a.r.t. says it may need to install the transit tower substation. of course there will be other access points. b.a.r.t. says it is still working on the time line. it is 5:07 and this morning lawmakers promising to protect lake tahoe for future generations. senator dianne feinstein says the key is focusing on climate change. she and republican senator from nevada are co-writing a bill authorizing $450 million in federal money for projects aimed at improving the lake water plan. we found some information about how climate change is already impacting the lake. two major factors are the rising temperatures and less snow. warmer temperatures are facilitating the algae growth in the lake which, of course,

impacts the water clarity. in 1910 a uc davis report says 51% of precipitation in tahoe was snow and in 2016 it was just at 33%. a big difference there. and right now it's 5:08. if you are planning to go to lake tahoe we are looking at great weather there. and in heavenly we'll be at 77 degrees today. 78 degrees tomorrow, and for friday, 81 degrees. as we get a live look outside right now at the golden gate bridge it is now not too bad as far as visibility. we will continue to see a few more low clouds moving in. temperatures starting out at 59 degrees heading up to 68 degrees. as we look at those temperatures and how they trend today we'll be hitting the high temperature at 68 degrees at 3:00 today. and then looking at all of our high temperatures around the bay area, some low 90s from antioch and livermore, there is concord.

and morgan hill a high of 88. 84 in san jose. and napa today up to 86 degrees. we'll talk more about those temperature trends as we go into today coming up in about four minutes heading over to vianey now looking at still some smooth sailing elsewhere around the golden gate bridge. >> definitely despite this accident that happened overnight that is still blocking the toll booth lanes three and five. we're not seeing any major delays out of the area. that doesn't mean it won't cause issues later around the 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. mark. keep this in mind. it may take a while to fully clear that out. chp issued a fog advisory. it looks like scary visibility is getting better out there. a wide look right now at the bay area we can see there's no other major delays. that accident along westbound 80 that has cleared up and traffic has recovered. a quick check of your drive times 101 about 20 minutes.

it's 5:13 on this wednesday morning. a live look in san jose. hard to tell but it is cloudy as we get started and as we check out the temperature trend for los gatos it will be at 66 degrees at 9:00. mid-70s for early afternoon but it doesn't stop there. we'll be in the mid-80s today. definitely feeling warmer, and warmer than our average high temperature and our temperature's heating up. more on that in five minutes. a quick check westbound 80 from highway 4 to the bay bridge

waived extradition. the fbi says he was a hacker for hire and may be connected to foreign governments, so the fbi documents still say which government. earlier the justice department said it was russian agents behind that attack. now he's from kazakhstan. he's a canadian citizen. he may not be the end target for u.s. prosecutors. he may be the small fish in a bigger fishing expedition. google will team up with walmart, google's voice assistant. they have other arrangements with stores like walgreens and what not. this is soon to be a counter to amazon and its alexa. ceo john watson will reportedly step done. chevron based in san ramon employs more than 50,000. there's been turnover in the world's largest oil companies including rex tillerson who left exxon to join the trump administration. a number of analysts say they think the top of the stock market may have come and gone. stocks rallied tuesday

napa. >> those grapes are blessed. oh, they are. >> you start to see holy images. >> let these grapes turn into wine. >> and it's a great day to visit. it's going to be hot today so that's to be the main thing to keep in mind, maybe some white wine today. and as we take a look at what's happening as you step out the door and already rolling on the roads in fremont it's 58 degrees, mostly clear skies. the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. as we check out today's high temperatures in oakland we'll be up to 72 degrees. 79 degrees in palo alto and san jose up to 84 degrees. we are going to have some hotter temperatures on down the line. so get ready for that. as we look at the school day forecast it will be a comfortable walk or drive to school this morning. at recess the kids will see more sunshine and warming temperatures. and by the time they get out of school later on this afternoon temperatures will be reaching into the 70s and 80s inland.

5:24. a massive typhoon is whipping through hong kong. officials raised it the highest storm alert. that storm is causing hundreds of flights to be canceled and training in financial markets are suspended as well. the typhoon triggered massive waves on some of the city's most popular beaches and some areas sea levels could rise to 15 feet. right now a travel warning

is in effect for certain regions of mexico. the state department is cautioning americans about violent crimes like murder, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery. the warning covers several regions includingist destinations like cabo san lucas as well as cancun on the yucatan peninsula. all new this morning safety systems to prevent car crashes appear to be working. that's the conclusion from two new studies published by the insurance institute for highway safety. data shows near crashes where the systems were sold between 2009 and 2015. one study looked at the blind spot detection system. the other examined tech that keeps vehicles in the lanes. researchers say tens of thousands of crashes could be voided if all vehicles were equipped. meantime this morning learning mileage can make a big impact on how much you pay for auto insurance. a new study found drivers who

down the temperatures throughout the morning. we'll be up to 84 degrees so not too bad. as we look at the temperature trend starting out for the morning we'll be in the upper 60s. noontime temperature of 76 degrees and low 80s today. san francisco up to 68 degrees. no changes there. we'll keep that same weather on the inland areas in the mid-90s this weekend. we'll talk only about the weekend coming up in seven minutes heading over to vianey now. a look at what's happening on the roadways. >> our speed sensors aren't picking up any major slowing and that's because it looks like it has stayed quiet in terms of major accidents. are seeing slowing along 580. it looks like there may be a fender-bender in the area which is why the speed sensors are picking that up. aside from that still mon this crash along golden gate. so for that we're going to toss over to pete who is live at the scene.

>> reporter: good morning to you, vianey. and it's lanes three and five that are shut down as a result of this crash. lane three is typically shut down in the morning. we're going to show you lane five heading into san francisco. you can see some of the damage following that rv crash. in fact, we'll show you some of the same video when all of this took place overnight. according to security on sigte, they're saying it happened just before 9:00 p.m. chp is investigating the cause of the crash. we can report the driver of the rv suffered a leg injury. we did do some digging to see if there were similar incidents like this on the bridge. an rv crash took place here at a toll booth a few weeks ago during the day with the door of the rv ripping off leaving it wedged in the booth but there were no serious injuries to those inside the rv. we checked into the future of the toll plaza and this comes at a time when the bridge will soon

going to kill you. >> guest says he managed to chase the man away. police then responded with a k- unit but the suspect was never found. now trying to track down surveillance video. a closer look at sexual assaults in el cerrito. some crime stats in the community. we investigated and found eight incidents falling under the sexual assault and sex offense category in el cerrito alone just within the past year. at 5:33 happening today the teenager accused of killing maddie middle in santa cruz is expected back in court. whether adrian gonzalez will be tried as an adult. investigators say gonzalez, who is now 17, sexually assaulted and killed middleton and then hid her body. gonzalez has pled not guilty. the current hearing is expected to last a week. and a follow-up now to the amber alert we first brought to you on "today in the bay." 9-year-old daniel morozov is

safe and in protective custody this morning. police say his father abducted the boy from his santa maria home after he shot and killed the boy's mother. the father was killed in a confrontation with lapd officers last night. it's 5:34. cracking down on fare evasion. new this morning we're learning dozens of people across the bay area are in trouble after being busted by b.a.r.t. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live in fremont. a lot of citations from the agency. good morning, kris. >> reporter: it sounds like a lot, laura. in just a few hours b.a.r.t. police officers did cite about three dozen people for trying to cheat and ride b.a.r.t. for free. these are new numbers this morning. the crackdown was last night. the focus about 5:00 to 9:00 last night at the powell station, the richmond and fremont station. officers wrote 36 citations, but in addition to that the officers also arrested four people on unrelated warrants and crimes.

last night's focused enforcement, as b.a.r.t. calls it, is part of the $3 million effort to stop fare evasion. i dug up some numbers and would you believe fare evaders cost about $25 million a year. that citation is a $250 ticket. a few dozen people cited is really just a drop in the bucket. b.a.r.t. says as many as 22,000 people steal rides, jumping turnstiles, sneaking in behind a paying passenger, or just straight walking on to a train. if you follow me on facebook and twitter, i want to hear from you, where do you see the most fare evaders and are they obvious about it? coming up at 6:30 i'll show you some of the other ways b.a.r.t. is trying to crack down on those fare evaders and make them pony up their fare. in fremont, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks a lot, kris. alameda county wants your input on the master bike and pedestrian plan. this particular plan is for the

unincorporated areas of the county shown in the shaded portion of your map there. the goal is to create new paths and to make the old ones safer. overnight we did some digging in the county's plan. right now nearly 42 miles of existing bike paths in the unincorporated area. the goal is 200 new miles. taking a look at our commute this morning. some problems out there on the way. looks clear in this shot. a lot of green out there. we do have problems on the toll plaza this morning where an rv ran into the golden gate bridge plaza. they have some lane closures as they try to work out that situation. it's 5:36 right now. pretty soon we'll be looking at the weekend forecast because we're already on wednesday, halfway through our workweek, kari. >> yes, we are. now we are going to take a look at saturday's forecast with our high temperatures really starting to heat up out there as

we get a look at the inland forecast on saturday 93 degrees. making plans to go swimming or relaxing by the pool or just trying to stay in air conditioning, the bay at 85 degrees. the coast at 70 degrees. looks like it will be nice and comfortable there. also more of the same on sunday with mostly sunny skies but there will be a few clouds near the coastline, and we are going to be tracking that. a lot of events going on this weekend including the chinatown street festival in oakland. on saturday and sunday this will be happening, temperatures starting out in the mid-60s and then rising into the low 70s today with some sunshine. and then as we look at the festival of the arts festival in palo alto on saturday and sunday, very nice weather there as well. reaching into the upper 70s for the afternoon. so that will be one of the spots, too, where you can go and enjoy milder weather. going to tahoe this weekend there will be a chance of some thunderstorms on friday.

all right. so now is the time that -- okay, this is a fun, interesting story. can you spell shakespeare. >> apparently it's a tough one for usc in southern california. a new statue of the queen of troy unveiled last week at the campus' new $700 million development. that's attributed to shakespeare's "hamlet" except the playwright's name is missing the "e" at the end. ucla tweeted out that error but usc says, quote, to "e" or not to "e." that is the question. shakespeare had his name spelled in a variety of ways. the university settled on a common 18th century spelling to match that ancient feel of the statue. to "e" or not to "e" is pretty clever. >> another question today, the weather. what is it going to look like? it will be hotter today and that is the thing many people inland will be like, it's starting to heat up out there.

that will be what we'll feel as we head into the weekend with some hotter weather on the way. at least it's cool now in the tri-valley, a mostly clear start to the morning and it's 58 degrees. lower 60s for the peninsula and the south bay. the east bay 59 degrees. still some clouds in san francisco as we start out 58 degrees. check out the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. it will be hot as we go into the weekend. at least today we're still feeling temperatures that are just a little bit warmer than the middle of august and where we should be. gilroy up to 9 0 degrees. as we move over to the east bay, walnut creek 89 degrees. oakland, 72 degrees and some mid-70s for the peninsula in san mateo. san francisco on par reaching up to 68 degrees and hotter in the north bay. in novato up to 90 degrees in mill valley at 77 degrees. as we take a live look outside

in san jose and getting ready this morning and it will be a great day for something like a hat, something that will give you some shade or your sunglasses and some nice shoes as well. but you need something more than heels if you're going hiking today in the east bay. it will be partly cloudy to start. as skies clear our temperatures making it into the upper 60s. look at how warm it will be at 2:00 today. drink lots of water under all of that sunshine. also have some warm temperatures in sonoma. wine country today. if you're not going on the hiking trails going to the north bay enjoying time outside it is going to be warm but cool spot will be at half moon bay out there hitting the links. san francisco stays nice and mild. morning clouds, afternoon sunshine. the inland areas are going to be heating up into the mid-90s by this weekend. our temperature trend of hotter temperatures will be under way starting today. heading over to vianey now, do we have any slow spots yet on the road? >> we do have some slow spots in

intervention strategies. the modesto police department is mourning the loss of one of its officers this morning. an off-duty police sergeant was killed last night while riding his bike. the driver who hit him was arrested for driving under the influence. the police department has not identified the sergeant who died but says he's been with the department since 2012 and was just promoted to sergeant a couple weeks ago. he previously worked for another office. >> this is a sad day for this community. this was a recently promoted sergeant. people who make that rank are leaders in their community. to see a leader like this lose his life on duty or off duty affects every single law enforcement officer in the community. >> the chp is working to help the grieving members of the modesto police department.

>> and the men whose voice defined stand athletics department for more than 50 years has died. the university just announced bob murphy died friday in santa cruz. murphy was the pitcher, broadcaster, and sports information director for the school. the school lost an icon. murphy was 86 years old and suffered from alzheimer's disease. a northern california city taking some fairly drastic steps to get more people to become firefighters. a new program that offers to cover the cost for those who want to become a firefighter. you have to be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma, and be cleared by a doctor for physical activity and meet specific income standards. the fire chief says the goal is to help ease the stress of paying for training. >> we want to make she is opportunities available for
