unerestrainuner unrestrained, against defending his highly criticized response to the clashes in charlottesville. >> what happened? charlottesville strikes at the core of america. >> reporter: but the president quickly turned his remarks into an all-out assault, accusing the press of misrepresenting his usual statements. >> they don't want to report that i spoke out forcefully against hatred, bigotry and violence and strongly condemned the neo-nazis, the white supremacists and kkk. >> mr. trump never mentioning the most controversial part to the virginia violence. >> you also had people that were very fine people on both sides. >> reporter: words that prompted criticism from both democrats and republicans as well as business and military leaders. still the president arguing overnight his initial statements were clear and on point. >> i didn't say i love you because you're black or i love

you because you're white. i love all the people of our country. >> reporter: the speech, which lasted for more than an hour filled with red meat for his staunches supporters. the president threatening to shut down the government over the border wall. >> if we have to close down the government, we're billing that wall. >> reporter: and hinting that he would pardon arpaio. >> i want do it tonight because i don't want to cause any controversy. is that okay? but sheriff joe can feel good. >> reporter: mr. trump even suggesting the massive trade deal, nafta, could soon be a thing of the past. >> i don't think we can make a deal. i think we'll end up probably terminating nafta. >> reporter: no one was spared his sharp barbs, including members of his own party from arizona. without mentioning them by name, he took aim at senator john mccain for voting given the

health care bill and senator jeff flake, who has been deeply critical of him. >> nobody wants me to talk about your other senator, who is weak on borders and weak on crime. i won't talk about him. nobody knows who the hell he is. >> reporter: claims cljames cla blasting the president and questioning his stability. >> i really question his fitness to be in this office. >> reporter: clapper also suggesting the president could be a threat to national security. >> i worry about, frankly, the access to the nuclear codes. >> reporter: president trump taking yet another swipe at senator jeff flake this morning. tweeting phoenix crowd last night was amazing. not a fan of jeff flake. weak on crime and bored arder. there are no signs that the

relationship between president trump and the majority leader. the two haven't talked in weeks after the two had an all outshouting match over health care. >> and stephanie goss, good morning. >> reporter: the goal of the police was to separate the protesters from the trump supporters. they were largely successful. this street was a kind of barrier. but when trump wrapped up his comments, that's when the trouble began. all together, four people were arrested, no one was injured. while it started out as a peaceful protest for thousands outside the phoenix convention center tensions quickly

escalated into pockets of chaos following trump's speech. groups of protesters and detractors started arguing with each other. protesters down the street outside of the convention center started hurling objects at police and they decided it was time to quickly disperse the crowd. we heard bangs and then quickly thereafter felt the effects of tear gas. >> i saw someone right next to me being hit in the lip with a rubber pellet, bleeding very profusely. afterwards they fired more and more tear gas until everyone dispersed. >> reporter: city officials denied there were rubber bullets

used. >> i'm going to say we were prepared, we were decisive and immediately responsive. i received information that we were to tear gas first. >> reporter: earlier president trump told the crowd of supporters there was no cause to worry outside. >> just so you know from the secret service, there aren't too many people outside protesting, okay? that i can tell you. >> reporter: phoenix mayor greg stanton was concerned that the scenes we saw play out in charlottesville will play out here in phoenix. this morning there's relief that that kind of violence didn't take place. guys, back to you. >> stephanie, thank you. >> a lot more to get to this morning, including a new fallout in the deadly collisions, the latest off the shore of singapore. andrea mitchell has more.

>> reporter: a stunning act of discipline and no confidence today in a top naval officer. the removal of the commander of the seventh fleet as the navy investigates why there have been four incidents this year alone, including this week's with the "u.s.s. john mccain" which left sailors dead as the search for the missing continues the missing continues today. vice admiral joseph youaucoin h been the fleet's commander. the navy said his removal was due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command. he are -- will be replaced immediately. the last two collisions involving "u.s.s. fitzgerald" and "u.s.s. john s. mccain" leading to the death of some of the crew.

tuesday inside its flooded compartments, drivers discovered human remains. just this morning an unidentified body was recovered and now we're beginning to learn from the families who lost some of the missing men. like petty officers john hoaglund and jacob dreg and kenny smith. his mom messaging, we're all rooting for you kenneth, the entire country is rooting for you. the family of petty officer logan palmer is praying he might still be alive. >> everywhere i look i see the opportunity that i'll see my brother again. >> reporter: the cause of the collision on monday between the u.s. destroyer and an oil tanker is still a mystery. navy officials saying they're looking at all possibilities. in the wake of these disasters, the navy called a halt to operations to figure out the problem. scott smith said he spoke with the crew himself and believes

they are not suffering from exhaustion. they are focusing on trailing and the role that crew communications may have played in this latest tragedy. >> andrea, thank you very much. >> the top u.s. commander in the middle east said additional troops will arrive in afghanistan in a matter of days or weeks. it came one day after the president announced his decision to boost the military effort in afghan stayed. the president said the u.s. would take a new approach to the nation's longest war. various reports have put the number of possible additional u.s. forces as high as 4,000. >> also this morning, new arrest warrants have been issued now for one of the white nationalists who took part in those violent rallies in charlottesville over the weekend and was featured prominently in a documentary about the protest. gabe gutierrez has the latest on this. good morning.

ships worldwide to halt operations and review basic training and other fundamentals. a manhunt is under way to find two escaped inmates in oklahoma. the pair overpowered two rs tue off in a transport van that was headed for a kansas prison. other authorities said the two inmates were armed with just a pencil. the van was later found abandoned. the police may have then stolen a pickup truck. a 5-year-old in houston, texas, made quite an entrance for his first day of kindergarten. kevin will was escorted to school by at least 100 police officers. kevin was born three months after his father, a houston police officer, was killed on duty by a drunk driver. the officers walked kevin, his mom and grandparents from home to school nearly a mile away. even a helicopter escort flew overhead. kevin's mom said even though he lost his father he gained a family from the fellow officers

i imagine that's one of the reasons you're seeing unlike ly companies work together in interesting new ways. >> reporter: this is a way for walmart to fight the footprint with amazon. and for google, it's a way for google to market google home. right now, more than 70% of people have the amazon echo. and 23.8% own a google home, a gap the tech company hopes to close, by rolling out a new partnership with a well-known brand. google express already delivers products for 40 other big retailers, including target and costco. walmart will be the first one letting shoppers link their online accounts with google to get a better idea of ordering history. google's virtual assistant can be accessed on a phone app.

the contra costa sheriff )s good morning. it's 8:26, i'm marcus washington. the contra costa sheriff's department says it's investigating a homicide. we expect an update today. we believe this happened along camino dihablo which is a two-lane road that runs through farmland. there are new numbers in an ongoing crackdown for people not paying for rides on b.a.r.t. they cited 36 people in four hours last night. if you're wondering, that fine, $250. b.a.r.t. says that this is a huge problem, saying as many as 22,000 people steal rides each year. let's get a look at what's going on with the traffic. >> we had a lot of trouble spots this morning and we're starting to get a couple more in the south bay, but right now what

we're really noticing of course is that accident that i was mentioning. there was a sig alert 680 at willow pass but that sig alert was cancelled and all lanes have been reopened, but traffic is still working to recover and it's still fairly heavy, so expect delays. we're also seeing a crash southbound 880 before winton avenue. an additional crash just after that and you can see the traffic sensors really picking up that slowing. if we look at the east bay drive times, we can sadly tell that there's a lot of slowing along the bay bridge. so head out now because you're going to catch some backup. i'll have another local news update in 30 minutes. who are these people?

>> i like to do it with cola. it gets caramelized. >> we had people that made the experiment. >> we have the pork shoulder. all of our beautiful seasonings. we have the garnish. and i like to add herbs to my carnitas. salt and pepper all over. i like to do a ton of garlic powder. and i do all sides, obviously. i throw this in a pot. nice, thick, heavy dutch oven. >> you want the fat in there, right? it's carnitas. >> when you cook carnitas, you add extra lard. you have a fatty cut of park, you don't have to add the extra calories. >> it's so delicious. >> we add some water. and then, that cola. >> why the cola? >> when it cooks down, you're going to get caramelization. it's going to get nice and thick

and syrupy. and it's going to coat your meat so beautifully. i like to add some bay leaves. late tarragon and fresh thyme. and let it cook until it's nice and thick. >> how long? >> a good hour. but every pan is different. and every piece of paork has a different amount of moisture. it has to look like this. >> great. >> it has to be covered. you let it cook. when it looks like this, after an hour or so, you can shred that with a fork. >> using a dutch oven. >> it has to be a nice, thick, heavy pot. just to get even distributions of heat. >> do you have any shredding techniques? >> i like to do it by hand. but you can use a knife and a four. that's carnitas. >> what are our garnishes? >> this is wonderful and shredded and ready to roll. and traditional garnishes.

of beer. that fizz is going to make it nice and -- >> any beer? >> i like to use light beer. pretty much whatever you want. if you don't want to use beer, to set ltzer. you want that fizz. that's what we're looking for. we have the cod. and you can use any good white fish fillet. you cut it up into strips. season and flour. salt, a little bit of pepper. and go in there, the batter. it's not going to be like the experiment. >> i was like, stand clear. >> everybody is afraid. >> we got if dutch oven going again. >> the oil nice and hot. throw those in there. you're looking for the golden color, to make sure it's cooked through. here's our fish tacos right here. we assemble. we have that nice fish strip. and i like to make something that's nontraditional, a
