afternoon at crissy field. some of those are starting as early as today. one at city hall at about 12 p.m. all hands on deck dealing with this rally that will take place at crissy field. they're going to fence off a part of the park for those taking part in the rally. the office of emergency services will be activated in case anything gets out of hand. the public defender and staff serving what they're calling illegal observers for protesters who may need assistance. the public defender's office wants to remind folks to express themselves but to do so in a safe way. >> express yourself but don't

francisco and as a result the union says there will be an all day work stoppage at bay area ports. this will be the union's third planned one-day work stoppage this year. and live now where you can expect to see some changes tomorrow because of that alt-right rally. on the san francisco side where that rally is scheduled, the sidewalks will be open. in berkeley they expect thousands to march in the streets. the city has1ogn a permit for an anti-marxism rally but the mayor expects people to show up anyway. the police chief told people in the community his goal is to keep the peace.

>> we want to be ready to scale up or down our approach to manage whatever comes our way. >> and counterprotesters will likely confront demonstrators at civic center park. of course this all follows the deadly violence and demonstration in charlottesville earlier this month and a security measure berkeley is removing a number of mailboxes. here is a map showing the locations. you can see right her the mailboxes are all near cal campus where sunday's rallies are going to take place. back in february protesters damaged several mailboxes. and our coverage continues online. we will stay on top of this as the pro-s and rallies happen all weekend. we will update our website as well as our facebook and twitter feeds 24/7. president trump continues to attack republicans and leadership.

criticized both republican senators from arizona at a rally this week. there will be policy differences. >> the president will need these to help him with important agenda items. >> the president has tied the debate to building his promised wall along the mexican border. >> we're building that wall. >> we need to do what we can to solve our problems and keep government running the way it should. >> we will not hit the debt ceiling. >> reporter: a promise congress will have until the end of september to fulfill. it would consider a short-term solution without money for the wall and picking up that battle later. now back to you.

san francisco is getting closer to a large development. the plans call for new housing. the pier shipyard closed in may. city planners unanimously approved a proposal that may add up to 2,100 new housing units and nine acres of new waterfront property. it is going to be a nice morning as you get out there, cool temperatures starting out in the mid-50s and by 10:00 we're at 4 degrees. a nice evening ahead as those temperatures steadily drop. today at muir woods free admission. we'll be at 70 degrees and warming up for the weekend,

we take a live look outside. the sun is rising as we speak. a live look outside in san jose. i want to show you the temperature trend for santa teresa and san jose. temperatures quickly warming up. we'll be in the mid-80s by this afternoon which is above our normal high temperature for this time of year. we will have a hotter weekend ahead. more on exactly where we could be near the triple digits coming up at 6:19. and right now 680, highway 94, which do you choose. we'll talk about the progress and time out your options. 6:14 this morning a new report from caltrans is touting economic benefits of mass transit. no surprise the report says regional commuter rail services saves money and reduces congestion and travel time for people using other modes of transportation. we searched through the report

6261. amazon will cut prices at whole foods once its purchase of the supermarket chain closes monday. reduced prices on things like bananas, avocado, salmon and almond butter. prime members will get special rewards with discounts and in-store benefits. you'll be able to buy whole food products on amazon. gasoline futures are rising as hurricane harvey bears down on texas and the gulf coast. the storm could impact one-third of u.s. refining capacity as energy companies shut facilities in that path. retail gas prices could rise by 5 cents to 15 cents in the next week. they do say storms that caused major long-term disruptions are very rare. hurricane katrina was the last to significantly undermine u.s. gas supplies. back over to you. >> thank you very much, landon.

as we track hurricane harvey moving closer to the texas coast, this storm is not expected to make landfall overnight. >> take a look at this. nasa captured images from harvey in space but this is what it looked like on the radar and this will be the first major hurricane to hit the u.s. in 12 years. here is how it looks from outer space right now. nasa capturing the swirling eye of the hurricane as it churns towards the texas gulf coast. "today in the bay's" sarah dalof is live. the storm is expected to continue to intensify to major hurricane status by the time it hits land, right? >> reporter: yes, has correct, kris and marcus. this morning a warning to all those in harvey path, get out of the way. >> hurricane winds over 74 miles per hour. >> reporter: churning across the gulf of mexico hurricane harvey

has texas in its sights and officials in emergency mode. >> the only thing predictable about the storm is it's unpredictable. >> reporter: a state of emergency in 30 counties ahead of harvey's arrival as residents shored up their homes and stockpiled supplies. >> so i got four things of water and formula for the baby. and some canned chili to see how far we can make it. >> reporter: texas hasn't seen a major hurricane since 2008 when hurricane ike killed more than 20 people across several states and caused billions of dollars in damage. forecasters caution harvey brings with it the potential for more mass devastation including widespread flooding. harvey could stalin land for days, something more than two feet of rain in overly saturated areas. >> it's going to be a dangerous storm that has the potential to have catastrophic impacts. >> reporter: and while harvey is likely days away from impacting new orleans, emergency managers

are scrambling to get turbines and pumps down for repairs back on line to handle expected floodwaters. >> the public now just needs to be alert the public needs to be prepared. >> reporter: all hands on deck as harvey closes in. now all seven texas coastal counties are under mandatory evacuation orders. officials urging those in neighboring counties to prepare. we're seeing the effects of that in stores. it's difficult to find fuel, bottled water flashlights. >> do stay safe. kari hall, you've been watching the radar. just yesterday morning the

topical tropical storm hunters went out there and we've seen this explosive manner on this system that has developed as it continues to move closer to the corpus christi area. if you have family in central texas, along the coastline, give them a call. make sure they have everything they need to evacuate. we are still going to see this getting even stronger over the next couple of days before it makes landfall as the possibility of a category 3 which means wind speeds will be over 120 miles an hour. by late tonight it looks like it will be inland and still by tomorrow through the afternoon could be a category 1 and there's the potential this could just sit in the same area or may move back out into the gulf of mexico and intensify once again. it needs that very warm water to become stronger and you may see that even into next week. so this will be a potentially dangerous situation for everyone in this area covered in yellow. that's where we could see anywhere from 10 to 20 inches of

rain and maybe even more in a few isolated spots. so this is something we'll continue to monitor over the next couple of days. as we look at our forecast here in the bay area we are going to see temperatures today just a little bit warmer, up to 89 degrees today in gilroy and the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen looking at low 90s in con and livermore today and in fremont expect a high of 81 degrees. 75 in san mateo as we understand nice comfortable weather there. san francisco will get more clearing today and highs in the north bay up to 85 degrees. if you are planning to head to napa valley this week we are once again looking at very nice weather and follow me on instagram. tracking what's happening with hurricane harvey and bay area heat at kari hall weather. look at this forecast for san francisco. 76 degrees by sunday and it's going to be in the upper 90s for the inland valleys. more on all of that coming up in

just a few minutes but mike says there's a tough friday drive for the tri-valley commuters. >> it looks like higher temperatures for the weekend for that same area. we're looking at the red and the orange for southbound 680. crashes down into sunol, over on the shoulder. one is on the left shoulder and one on the right shoulder. folks are veering back and forth. no lanes blocked but that's the big jam for the bay. the bay bridge metering lights are on. no problems there. just the backup and the wait. the rest of the flow. we'll take you back with waze and we used to have 680, much slower than 84. now they're about the same, the blue and the on your route. so just keep that in mind. changes over the last two minutes and we'll look at your phone, we'll keep updating throughout the day and the weekend. select your name and then select our name, the team called nbc bay area wazers is the one to

areas are really going to sizzle. check that out, sunday up to 99 degrees. i'm going to talk only about the weekend and some evens going on around the bay area coming up in seven minutes. >> some fog around the area. we have enough that we can see the taillights going around the bed, in the tunnel the on ramp is what may be affected by the crash. all around the bay we're looking at a friday commute and down to sunol boulevard. that's a much better route because things are smooth south of there. that is one issue. to the castro valley y. >> happening today it could be the beginning of what is

expected to be a contentious weekend here in the bay area. >> an anti-hate rally kicks off at noon. mayor ed lee, other city leaders and community organizers are leading that one and they say it's meant to be a celebration of san francisco values of compassion, love and inclusiveness. a digital light vij tal because no real candles are allowed. the rally is going to take place. san francisco will activate its office of emergency services to help monitor the situation. the public defender and his staff will be at the demonstration serving as legal observers. in berkeley thousands may march on the streets sunday. the city denied a mitt for an anti-marxism rally. the mayor expects people will

exercise this trains them in various first responder scenarios. in a few hours from now in downtown observing the alameda county urban shield task force will vote on whether or not to continue to hold the event here because it has become so controversial. in recent years activists protested outside urban shield. they feel it promotes the kind of tactics that lead to police brutality and violence against minorities. a group called the stop urban shield coalition plans to speak out at this morning's 9:00 meeting. we, too, will be there. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. the oakland fire department is holding a memorial service honoring one of its firefighters who you might recall was shot and killed in san jose. 30-year-old jake walter was killed in japantown after going to a music festival. this man was arrested, oliver juneau, for that shooting. they say the entire ordeal was caught by surveillance camera.

the motive is still not clear. the memorial service is planned for the oakland scottish right center. crime in dolores park with many incidents happening in broad daylight. five teenagers were arrested after trying to steal a bike. the victim ended up stealing the suspect. the was not seriously hurt. earlier this month three people were injured in a shooting during a gay pride incident in june. a fight erupted in the park where a man was stabbed and a woman hit in the head with a bottle. in may a group of young men attacked and stabbed another man. and there are other shootings that happened in february. a large group of skateboarders took over dolores street and started skateboarding down the hill. after all these incidents sfpd announced they will patrol the

park on foot every day. a live look at 101 does it look sparse? a new survey says more people are car-pooling and taking mass transit so maybe there's something to it. we checked online and the survey says fewer downtown service workers are driving to work alone. down from 56% last year to 53% in 2017. the rate of workers using transit is up. that's a good sign from 18% to 20%. and ride sharing is up from 6% to 8%. happening today north bay's long-awaited commuter train gets rolling. the smart train begins full service today. this is a live look ahead. the first train leaves the sonoma county station at 12:49 from the airport to san rafael.

>> thank you very much. the weekend is coming. >> it is. >> we're ready to see what we can do to plan. >> there's a lot going on and we'll have a lot going on in the weather, too, with a wide range in temperatures. look at the coast for tomorrow. it'll be up to 72 degrees. 87 degrees by the bay and the inland valleys up to 98 degrees. on sunday even hotter weather inland and you'll want to take it easy or maybe go to a place like this, half moon bay, where temperatures will be much more manageable. and there's also a lot of events going on around the bay area including the chinatown street festival in oakland. both saturday and sunday, both days some great weather. we'll start to get warm through the afternoon with highs reaching into the low 80s, mostly sunny skies, bring some bottles of water and the festival of the arts in palo alto will be happening on saturday and sunday as well from 10:00 to 6:00 and for that we will have some temperatures starting out at 70 degrees in

the morning and then rising into the upper 70s and may hit that 79 to 80 degree mark for the. and it's really going to be hot out there at san jose state. the first home game at spartan stadium, check out these temperatures. 93 degrees at the start of the game. it will slowly make it into the upper 80s. make sure you have your own shade, a hat or something to try to give you a little bit of relief. it starts out with a parade and will be at 80 degrees. as we go the afternoon find some shade that will be in the lower 90s and not much of a breeze. 82 degrees on sunday. perfect beach weather. and for today in yosemite and muir woods, free admission.

much harder than going through the east bay and the castro valley. we'll show you how these options haved. hurricane harvey is picking up strength as we've been talking about this morning. this is a live look at corpus christi where folks are preparing for the worst. the cameraing around way more than it was even just an hour and a half ago. right now harvey is a category 2 hurricane. forecasters say it will intensify by the time it makes landfall later today and early tomorrow. it could be the biggest storm to make landfall in the u.s. in more than a decade and certainly since katrina. the corpus christi area appears to be in the storm's direct path. the city could see very strong winds plus a powerful storm surge as well. san antonio, austin, and the fourth largest city in the country, houston, further back from the water, could get about two feet of rain. the governor of texas already declared a state of emergency for 30 texas counties.

coverage of hurricane harvey continues next on the "today" show millions of people prepare for this potentially historic flood. an early morning crash, new video of that mangled aftermath into our newsroom. you're looking at it there. police say this happened 2:30 a.m. authorities say that this is a single car crash. one lieutenant says when he drove up he thought he was going to come up on a fatal wreck. >> it's miraculous. i don't use that word lightly. it's miraculous he walked away from this accident. >> that lieutenant said when officers showed up found the driver sitting on the curb talking with witnesses. the driver was only suffered minor injuries and is being checked out at the hospital. police are working right now to figure out what led up to the crash. new this morning the woman at the center of an east bay sexual that rocked several law

enforcement agencies is filing a new civil suit. the woman claimed to have sex with a number of police officers including some when she was under age. her attorneys are now filing a claim. this follows a suit filed last week against richmond police. previously she settled a claim against oakland for $1 million. an arrest warrant issued in a frightening attack. police are looking for the man you see here on your screen. the woman screamed, got the attention of neighbors and that suspect took off. b.a.r.t. riders are told to be cautious because investigators believe that suspect traveled to el cerrito on b.a.r.t. his last known address was in san francisco. and universal health care.

state senators -- inmates approved the healthy california act, would replace with a single payer system. the bill never made it to the assembly because the speaker felt it lacked key details like how the costs were covered. 6:48 right now and the national park service celebrates its 101st birthday. celebrate with them with free entry into any of america's national parks. fees are being waived at the more than 400 national parks across the country. we looked closer overnight about 130 national parks charge admission fees and that includes 11 here in california. maybe you've been there, muir woods charges $5, john muir site charges $3. yosemite costs $20 per vehicle and about $10 per adult.

it all depend on where you are, where we'll have the hottest temperatures this weekend. you can just make a drive and then change your weather. that's the great thing about the bay area. as we look at where we're starting this morning we are pretty much all in the 50s and low 60s. we are seeing mostly clear skies. a live look outside. the right-hand side of your screen in the tri-valley looking live in pleasanton and the east bay 57 degrees. live in fremont just a few clouds. we are also seeing a few of those clouds in san francisco. check out the north bay. we've dropped down to 48 degrees. the seven-day forecast is at the bottom of screen showing hotter temperatures on the way for the weekend. enjoy today. it will be hotter than it was yesterday in spots like gilroy reaching up to 89 degrees. we'll start to see a few more 90s in the east bay from livermore to antioch over to danville and oakland looking at a high today of 72 degrees. the peninsula staying cool. 63 degrees while redwood city will be up to 79 degrees.

the embarcadero will see a high of 66. nava toe today 85. santa rosa up to 83 degrees. can see the sunshine now. that's the reminder to grab the sunglasses before you head out and later today it will be hotter for the valleys. make sure you grab something like some short sleeves to wear today and over the next several days more on that very warm weather. so as you get ready to walk the kids to school or going in the drop-off line we've been watching out for patchy fog and a few clouds along the coastline. you can see that sunshine inland. and temperatures will be warming up as we go through recess and throughout the morning hours. and then by 1:00 getting ready to pick up the kids. it will be in the 60s along the coast and 80s inland. a live look outside in heavenly. maybe after school hitting the roads, going to the sierras. a very nice weekend there and in san francisco some low to mid-70s for both saturday and sunday. inland yaz, look at how hot it's going to be almost in the triple

rally is supposed to take place and they've been doing that since yesterday. this is video from yesterday. san francisco will activate its office of emergency services tomorrow to help monitor the situation i followed them on twitter. you can do the same. extra staff scheduled and put on call at san francisco general hospital. and several rallies are planned for today at anti-hate rally planned for city hall at noon. it's supposed to be a celebration of compassion, and inclusiveness. tonight at 7:00 advocates will hold a digital light rally. no real candles are allowed so they will use digital lights there. across the bay in berkeley police are proepg feparing for thousands to rally. the mayor says that he still expects people to up so police will be out in full force. counterprotesters are expected. a live look from santa rosa this morning. the long-awaited smart train finally officially starts
