we are under a micro climate weather alert. a live look outside in palo alto. we're expecting dangerous heat of bay area standards. thank you so much for joining us on this monday. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm marcus washington. thank you for joining us, as laura said. a lot of people are talking about the heat we're going to experience throughout the day. >> we felt it yesterday and it will be just as hot in some spots, hotter as we go into this afternoon. the dangerous conditions in the hills and the east bay, the tri-valley as well as parts of the delta. 98 degrees to 112 degrees for all of these areas shaded in orange. wanted to quickly take you

through the temperatures we will be feeling today in the south bay looking at highs up to 96 degrees in san jose. 103 in gilroy. for the east bay up to 107 in antioch. livermore, 108. oakland, 86 degrees. 83 in redwood city. san francisco with some mid-70s there and the north bay up to 104 degrees in novato. we'll be talking about the high heat and tropical storm harvey coming up as we head over to mike. a roadside fire in the south bay. with the high temperatures a big alert will track down what exactly is going on. this morning it is a small roadside fire just off 237. not a major impact. those types of situations are more harrowing, potentially more harrowing if the temperature gets up there and we do get a fire. northbound 101, a roadside crash there as well out of lanes but

i'm tracking this as chp arrives. back to you. thanks, mike. a story still developing and will be for days and months. the houston metro area, home to nearly 6 million people is under water as tropical storm harvey continues pounding southeast texas this morning. some are calling this a 500-year historic flood. >> this could become the worst disaster in texas history. here is the very latest. at least two people are dead but the death toll is expected to rise because bodies may be inside flooded homes and submerged vehicles. there have been more than 1,000 water rescues and thousands of calls in to 911 dispatchers overnight. also new overnight dams holding back water from two reservoirs had to be opened sending more floodwaters into downtown houston. those dams have not been opened in decades. both airports are shut down impacting flights here in the bay area.

many people have lost everything. >> everything is destroyed. >> i walked out and i was just like screaming. >> national guard convoys and emergency crews from the white house say president trump is expected to visit texas on tuesday. two bay area firefighters arrived in houston. more are on the way. yesterday a team from the peninsula packed up their boat, gear, and flood gear and headed towards texas. 14 firefighters trained in swift water rescues are going and the fire chief says the team will get right to work once they arrive. >> i anticipate they'll put these guys in the worst locations because that's where you want them. wherever the deepest water is where people may be in attics, that's the best spot for these guys. >> it takes about 26 hours to drive. stay with the bay, much more coverage of tropical storm harvey. we'll bring you live reports throughout the morning. and new this morning we're learning more about berkeley, a

story we're bringing you live team coverage on air and online since friday. new overnight, several people hurt including a police officer during the violent protest. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos live with information coming in plus more on all the arrests. good morning, pete. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, laura and marcus. as you mentioned berkeley police, one officer was injured and 13 people arrested. we do know thousands came out to protest what they feel were the views of the alt-right. while they may have agreed on that their strategy for protesting could not have been more different. that's video of the majority of those protesters who marched with large banners and signs like those to send a message to hate groups.

those opposed to the canceled alt-right rally scheduled for sunday as a small group of trump supporters shouted down by the organizer who canceled this conservative protest set for san francisco came to berkeley and was roughed up and chased out of this area by the group of people wearing bandannas and black hoodies. as far as arrests and injuries go, we can report 13 arrests were made. there was one officer injury and six other people that were injured during yesterday's events. two of them were sent to the hospital. now here is what one of the peaceful protesters had to say about the importance of speaking out against hate groups potentially rallying in the city as well as a rally supporter who did not want to be identified saying his group isn't getting a fair shake. >> we're a very diverse group but we want to be able to send a united message against hate. >> these cities claim to be tolerant, then they should be accepting of everybody's opinion. >> reporter: unlike past rallies

berkeley police did use force to take control of the situation and for the most part that rally was peaceful. while i mentioned more than a dozen arrests were made from yesterday's rally, there's still an ongoing investigation. if you have pictures of people causing trouble you're encouraged to turn that over to berkeley police. we're live in berkeley, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> all right, thanks for the latest there, pete. and on saturday thousands took to the streets in san francisco, an anti-hate rally. people marched and protested against a permitted rally in chrissy field which was canceled by the organizer. the day was mostly peaceful. on facebook and twitter you can see our digital team's unique perspective. they worked on the ground all day documenting the rallies and protests including this one. nbc bay area police arrested

here are today's top business headlines. wall street could start the week off in the red. a positive week but still lower for the entire month. investors will get a lot of economic data including reports on housing, the consumer, manufacturing, auto sales and it's all topped off by the monthly jobs report. last friday the dow rose 30 points to 21,813. the nasdaq slipped five to 6265. core logic says more than 200,000 homes along the texas coast could be at risk for flood damage from hurricane and tropical storm harvey which is covered by the national flood insurance program. it could take days if not weeks or longer for claims to emerge. congress must renew the insurance program by the end of september. it currently only has $6 billion left on new claims. many people buy through private insurers which are compensated for the service. and apple has opened a page on itunes where people can make hurricane harvey-related

we're heading up to 108 degrees today. as we get a look at the temperature trend we do start out with some 70s already at 7:00 in the morning and then we'll be at 103 degrees at 1:00. we'll take a closer look at this and the rest of the micro climate up next. looking over here we do have hot weather in the tri-valley. this is dublin. the traffic is pretty cool right now, westbound 580 with headligh headlights. we'll talk about the south bay coming up. still ahead, idling your car is harmful to the environment and can hurt your wallet. the cost of idling and what one city plans to do about it. in the bay.

live pictures now from around welcome back, everyone. it's 4:45. you're watching "today in the bay." a live look across the bay. for most of us another hot one. triple digits. it is so monday. triple digit temperatures like sunday. it is another alert day. i need a cup of coffee. i have to go home. i have to go home. >> already feeling the effects. >> iced coffee today. it is going to really be hot. make sure you stay hydrated as the day goes along even if you don't feel thirsty and that's what we always advise even as we start out this morning.

trying to cool down from the high heat. let's go to the neighborhood and check out that temperature trend. we will be in the upper 60s at 8:00 this morning. looking at low 80s already by 11:00 and that air conditioner goes up on full blast as we continue to see our temperatures going up from there at 94 degrees at 2:00. the air quality will be most unhealthy in the east bay and the south bay, all of the air pollutants get trapped below 1,000 feet and it's very unhealthy to be out there with r&eáñ levels if you there with have breathing problems during the hottest time of the day. we do have that excessive heat warning in effect until 9:00 this morning. temperatures in some spots could hit over 110 degrees mainly for the inland hills. you need to exercise extreme

caution today. we'll have a high fire danger and make sure you take care of your pets and livestock as well. our high temperatures by this afternoon in gilroy will be up to 103 degrees. milpitas a high of 95 degrees. and for the east bay 104 degrees in danville, livermore, 108. hayward, 90 degrees. 80 in san mateo today while palo alto up to 92. and 76 today in the mission district. for the north bay looking at highs up to 103 degrees in sonoma. as we go back to look at what's happening with hurricane harvey, we are seeing some of the rain bands being displaced further to the east now moving into southwestern louisiana and also still raining over houston at this point as we've seen this tropical storm now barely moving over the next couple days. we'll move back out briefly over the gulf of mexico and then move back inland near galveston and

houston. still bringing copious amounts of rain over the next several days so we'll continue to monitor that. we'll have more updates throughout the morning while san francisco today will be up to 76 degrees. warm temperatures and then gradually cooling off this week. look at how hot it will be inland. unfortunately, there's not a lot of relief here. we do come down a few degrees for the middle of the weekend and will go right back up by the end of the week. we'll talk more about this as we head over to mike tracking the crash in san jose. >> we're tracking that little roadside fire off 237, the fire crews will sounds like it's well in hand. with the temperatures you're talking about watching for any fires. we don't want them to go unreported there. also northbound 101. this is the crash i'm tracking still off to the shoulder, no injuries reported. car is in the ditch off the side of the roadway. we'll show you the waze system. no slowing there and out of the hercules area and across the bridge towards san francisco, easy choice.

you may want to take the blue route. if you think things are crazy in berkeley, the golden gate bridge has a lot of fog and that will play into your speeds. you can check out waze on your phone. also check out which team you're a member of here. nbc bay area wazers is the team i want to make sure is on your profile. make sure that's the one with the check mark. the u.s. navy says the bodies of all ten missing sailors from the "uss john s. mccain" have now been recovered. the navy destroyer crashed into an oil tanker near singapore. it was the second involving a navy ship in two months. after the collision the commander was relieved of duty. they are still investigating what led up to the crash. 4:49. the city of san jose has agreed to a lawsuit. the incident happened in august of 2015.

the victim says three officers struck him with batons when he was pulled over for a vehicle code violation and his arm was injured in the process. they cited the driver for driving under the influence but eventually dropped the charge. it calls for a $700,000 payout which the city council must now approve. 4:50. san mateo leaders are looking to make long-term improvements and asking for the public's help. the city is looking into enhancing downtown. today they are holding a second downtown community workshop. takes place at 6:00 p.m. at san mateo's main library. and happening today city leaders consider idling cars more than two or three minutes after complaints from residents. we decided to look deeper. 65% of pollutants are from vehicles.

after police in ferguson used armored vehicles against protesters following the shooting death of michael brown. president trump excited to defight the fate of dreamers, the children brought into the country illegally. people on both sides of the issue are bracing for the possibly he will stop issuing new work permits under the daca program. if that happens hundreds of thousands of young people will no longer have protection from deportation. >> senator carmela harris is holding a roundtable with eight dream e dreamers. meeting with california mayors and then wednesday a town hall meeting in oakland. and now to another state senator, dianne feinstein, facing new opposition. los angeles democrat pat harris will be officially announcing his candidacy for feinstein's seat. harris has served as a public

offender and criminal defense lawyer for over two decades. harris will make his announcement on the steps of city hall at 10:00 this morning. 68,000 people are descending on the desert this week for burning man. >> opening day yesterday. the festival celebrating the arts and the freedom for people. heavy traffic and desert heat made the track a little tough yesterday. it will feature new art. a short time later the boy got his own foul ball he gave to the man who caught the first ball. then the boy got another ball which he turned and handed to another boy.
