so far no problems there or getting to the bay bridge. here are your travel times approaching. >> now to that developing story, devastation along texas' gulf coast as hurricane harvey leads the state's largest in houston under water. this is a story changing quickly, one that we will be tra tracking for days and months. >> two people are dead. bodies may be inside flooded homes and submerged vehicles. more than 1,000 water rescues since yesterday alone and thousands of calls were placed to 911 dispatchers overnight.

a tough go of it. >> more rain and flooding in the southeast texas area. you can see how large this system is even as it has been downgraded to a tropical storm. numerous tornado watches in effect for parts of southeastern texas and louisiana, some of those really heavy rain bands rolling onshore. 15 to 30 inches of rain has already fallen, and there is the potential of another 30 inches in those same areas. as the system slowly moves and wind speeds, right there near

houston as we still see the rain bands on the owner side. our weather is playing a role in that hurricane, that tropical storm now, as the hot area of high pressure sits over us and, kris, now you're watching the high heat and the fire danger for today, right? >> reporter: yes, kari. as you can see there's a temperature gauge behind me as we're at 61 right now. as you well know, kari, that temperature gauge is going to be in the triple digits by this afternoon and could be a very long day for firefighters. we are about eight miles away. there are high voltage lines under threat.

crews are still there this morning. petaluma, the firefight was on the ground. they battled in triple digit heat as well. it was during the lunch time hours and the fire burned about 18 acres before firefighters could get it under control. they will be in the 90s and once that grass is dry it's dry. coming up at 6:00 we'll take a look at the state picture to see where our fire resources are right now. in livermore, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thank you for that. >> you can keep track of the heat even when we're not in the air. >> a judge sentenced former stanford swimmer brock turner to six months in jail for sexually

assaulting a woman. they claim the jury does not have jurisdiction but the secretary of state does. persky's lawsuit has been temporarily stopped. >> the piedmont city council was voted to remove the city's mayor jeff wheeler. mr. wheeler acted first by resigning. he did it over the weekend. it comes after his controversial conversation on facebook with a piedmont resident. he wrote transgender people are mentally ill, liberals are un-american, and the black lives matter movement. one member says wheeler lacks moral leadership. >> i would absolutely defend his right to free speech but sometimes free speech has consequences. >> wheeler will remain on the city council until his current term is over in november of 2018. >> the vet and san francisco police officer facing child porn charges is expected in court

today. 37-year-old joshua is expected to be arraigned in martinez today. investigators say they found child pornography on the officer's home computer. he has been suspended from the san francisco police department. 5:08. san francisco police questioning a man in connection with a homicide in the excelsior neighborhood. it happened near the amazon proper playground. when officers arrived they found the victim who later died at the hospital. investigators say the man in custody and the victim knew each other but it's not clear exactly what happened. more details now, we looked into our archives and found this is the sixth homicide this year in the area covered by san francisco's ingleside police precinct. also the new government database. we looked at the number of assaults investigated in that precinct since the start of the year. there have been 62 reported. 5:08 and back to our micro climate weather report, a live

look outside at san jose. it's going to be a hot one. >> it sure is. let's check in with kari hall and a look at the heat in the bay area today. right. we normally start out with temperatures in the mid-50s but we are now already at 68 degrees in the tri-valley with clear skies. 59 degrees in san francisco. we do still have that marine layer, the clouds and fog that will be rolling by as we get a look at the air quality. it is going to be unhealthy in the east bay and the south bay and moderate air quality in the north bay as well as the peninsula and the coast. we'll be watching out for the high ozone levels and some high heat. we'll take a closer look at the numbers coming up in a few minutes. mike now is tracking a new crash in the east bay. >> i am, kari. it sound like it's not a big deal but i wanted to mention it. you see the green speed sensors. anything will be a surprise and folks coming off of that richmond -- san rafael to richmond, eastbound 580, the crash. it sounds like everything is off

we have the backup, marcus. >> now to hurricane harvey which may cause the worst destruction. towns and cities are under water including the houston metro area home to nearly 6 million people. a better glimpse of the wrath of hurricane harvey and the devastation left behind. this is something you're seeing all throughout the city and even the suburbs of the houston metro area. and here is the very latest. two people are dead. the death toll is exed to rise. submerged in vehicles. more than 1,000 water rescues have been carried out since yesterday. overnight released from two dams for the first time in decades sending more water into the downtown houston area and more new information within the last

hour. fema just said it expects more than 450,000 disaster victims to file for assistance. and this morning live coverage from the wrath of hurricane harvey. some people call this a historic 500-year flood. "today" show's gabby gutierrez. the incidents are just stunning. >> reporter: good morning. it truly is stunning. many people here are calling this historic, catastrophic. however you referred to it this is devastating. i am right now in the southwest part of the city. this is next to the shopping district, the galleria. you can see how high the water is still rising in parts of this city.

behind me 9 or 10 feet or so. further down, the water is just under 20 feet. really incredible how much some of the water is collecting here in certain parts and making roads impassable. there are more evacuations for other suburban communities as authorities release water from two reservoirs to relieve pressure on the dams there. now the water is flowing downstream, one of the main arteries into downtown houston. water is rising at the rate of a foot an hour. we saw hundreds of water rescues throughout this area. people plucked from their room to tops, from their homes, desperately seeking help. as you mentioned the death toll from this storm stands at at least two.

new details overnight. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. quite a scene as you saw in the video from sky ranger. we can report that at least one officer was injured and 13 people were arrested. however, a majority of demonstrators who came out to protest the alt-right did so peacefully. those are the protesters i'm referring to who are marching with large banners and signs like those sending the message to hate groups who might come to berkeley that it's not welcome in their city. that wasn't the case for all of those opposed to that canceled alt-right rally. a small group of trump supporters were shouted down by members of a group that we've become familiar with, an organizer who canceled his conservative protest in san francisco actually came out to berkeley and was roughed up and

chased out of the area by that group of people wearing bandannas and black hoodies. as far as the arrests and injuries go, there were 13 arrests and one officer was injured during all of this. six people were injured as well during yesterday's event and two were sent to the hospital. now here is what one of those peaceful protesters had to say about the importance of speaking out as well as a rally supporter who didn't want to be identified saying his group isn't getting a fair shake. >> we're a very diverse group. we want to be able to send a united message against hate. >> these cities claim to be tolerant, they should be accepting of everybody's opinion. >> reporter: the berkeley mayor did release a statement on the protest inially first addressing the people by saying, quote, they gave impassioned speeches. they played music and showed that berkeley and the bay area will always stand for tolerance,

i had the wrong section of the north bay this is closer to vacaville. better news for a lot of our drivers. if heading out of the area or expecting someone coming into the area, look how much slowing is going on. that big rig overand chp blocking at least one lane in each direction. multiple lanes, multiple directions for the freeway. we'll track that again between vacaville and fair field. over to the bay bridge you see an easy drive. a little slowing across the metering lights and the tri-valley where travel times are fine. you want to get through there quicker today. i understand another weekend ahead of us -- it's monday, but it will be hot again next weekend? >> looks like it. we were hoping for a little bit of some relief from this high heat we just had to deal with. as we look ahead to this weekend coming up, still really hot looking at highs up to 98 degrees in the valleys. the bay will be at 86 degrees

and the coast at 72 degrees. on sunday temperatures down just a couple of degrees, 66 by the coast. the bay 80 degrees and 93 degrees for the valley. if you're going to napa valley look at these temperatures. on friday 104 degrees we'll bring you back to the 90s for the rest of the weekend. still very uncomfortable. if you are planning to go to the sierra, lake tahoe, there will be a chance of thunderstorms on friday with temperatures in the mid-80s, up to 87 degrees saturday and then a little bit better sunday. monterey will have very nice weather with 70s expected there throughout the weekend. i'll have a look at the temperature trend coming up in about four minutes. >> we look forward to that, thank you. it is 5:41. lending a hand. our coverage continues. the bay area crew jumping to the rescue in texas.

excessive heat warnings in effect for all of these areas shaded in orange. i'll talk about those temperatures and what you can expect where you live in five minutes. >> looking over here we have green. the top number is growing. it went to yellow. slowing for the east shore freeway coming up. look at the flooding that has gone on there. a few bay area firefighters are on their way there right now already arriving in houston. yesterday a team from the peninsula packed up boats, gear and crews to head out to texas. 14 firefighters trained in swift water rescues are going. the team will get right to work once they arrive. >> they will put them in the worst locations, because that's

where you want them, the deepest waters where people may be in attics is the best spot. >> the drive to texas takes about 26 hours. >> a grand affair to announce new destinations out of mineta san jose international airport. hurricane harvey has changed those plans. they are scaling that back to a quick announcement at the ticket counter. the mayor will no longer be attending. the airline and airport say the people of texas are in their hearts and minds. homeowners in one sonoma county city may have to pay extra if they don't plan to live there full time. the councilwoman has announced a 1% tax. you would have to pay more if it's not a primary residence.

high heat. well, now even as we start out this morning at 66 degrees in the south bay as the sun begins to rise, 64 degrees taking a live look outside in palo alto and we do still have the clouds and fog as we take a live look at the golden gate bridge. the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, no relief this week as we are heading up to 108 degrees today in livermore. morgan hill 102. santa cruz, 78 degrees. half moon bay at 68 degrees. san francisco some mid-70s there. we see all of these triple and that's the reason we do have those excessive heat warnings. anytime we have a day like this we always say wear something that's lightweight, light colored and that is very breathable. it's a good day to bring your own shade, something like a hat, and it's a good beach day because that's where the temperatures will be the coolest if you can make sure you try to stay cool and stay out of this

high heat and also if you have breathing problems the ozone levels will be very unhealthy in the east bay and south bay. we have the excessive heat warning in effect and we also have the heat advisories in effect for the valleys. that just means that you do need to take it easy once again and all of this hot weather we are going to keep this as we go through the week. inland up to 105 today. it doesn't get much better towards the end of the week. mike is still tracking the sig alert. it means major impact, at least a half hour and that's up in the north bay between vacaville and fairfield, i-80 is jammed up because of a crash right around jerry glenn. looking over here for the rest of your bay and this map shows a nice, smooth drive. we are showing a build and there's a crash southbound 680 coming down through sunol into fremont. i do see slowing around the washington boulevard bend south of mission.
