valley -- record breaking heat expected there and throughout th a live look outside at the tri-valley. record breaking heat expected there and, honestly, throughout the bay area. livermore expected to reach 115 degrees. the last time it got that hot out there it was nearly 70 years ago. thanks for joining us on this friday morning. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm marcus washington. i can tell you i went outside last night and it was still hot. >> it takes a long time to cool down. it's been a mild start this morning. we don't normally see temperatures in the 70s, like that never happens here so we are starting out with warm weather and another excessive heat warning.

heat advisories along the coast. the high temperatures today. yes, we will be reaching over 100 degrees widespread and it's been a long time since we had weather this hot. we'll talk more about this. as we head to mike you have some breaking news. an overnight crash. >> this is 580. high temperatures, we're always worried about fire. this crashed car rolled over, caught a fire. a five-acre fire. they had a couple lanes also closed. they had all lanes closed for about ten minutes while they airlifted the person involved in the crash, two lanes blocked for quite some time. now all lanes have reopened. the crash on the shoulder and the brush fire. cal fire took care of that. they are being vigilant all around the area. speed sensors are not a problem.

we'll be on watch for anything like that this morning. >> back to our micro climate alert as we brace for record breaking temperatures this morning. we know it will stretch long into this weekend and it's a holiday weekend. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live at the alameda county fair grounds with how scorching temperatures will impact. it's hard to plan ahead for this kind of heat, pete. >> reporter: that's right. good morning to you, kris and marcus. there will be several events with this heat wave coming in. a big one here. 152nd annual. organizers tell me they are expecting about 35,000 people to be here on saturday and sunday and folks coming down they're prepared for the heat. >> all of the buildings that house vendors are

air-conditioned. we'll have five misters, where water and mist form, very refreshing. five stations to help with people. it's easy to get out of the direct sun. >> reporter: air conditioning and shade is what he's telling us. they will shield folks away from the heat. an organizer tells me plenty of medical assistance as well. two things come to mind. heat exhaustion and heat stroke. the symptoms are faintness, nausea and weakness so you want to move the person out of the heat, have them drink cool water and cool them down by spraying or sponging down with cool water. heat stroke symptoms include

fever, rapid pulse, rapid breathing. maybe place ice packs on their neck, use a fan while misting with cool water. if someone has a heat stroke you may want to get medical help asap. the key point is to stay hydrated and cool down when you can during the heat wave this week. we're live at the alameda county fair grounds. pete suratos, "today in the bay." you can track the heat wave from the palm of your hand. click on the tab for temperatures in your neighborhood. hurricane harvey evacuees are starting to move home, the storm now a tropical depression. a live look out of downtown nashville. the latest headlines from nbc news. the storm pushing as far north as tennessee. nashville is very stormy looking. there are several reports of water rescues as well. but in texas a flooded chemical plant in crosby is still

smolderi smoldering. our sister station found a history of violations, reporting it is a question of when not if that remaining unstable material will degrade, catch fire, and even possibly explode. there are 38 storm-related deaths though people are still missing. people are starting to get access. >> others are just now feeling the brunt of hurricane harvey. >> reporter: well this is part of the recovery effort. the drugstores around the houston area are beginning to open. medicine is available in the houston once again. stores that say they open 24 hours a day are limiting those hours. the stores are not fully operational.

there's more recovery as well as victims assessing the damage caused by harvey. and victims feeling it almost a full week by now. a task force from the bay area was back in rescue mode racing to the town of wharton. >> we are unable to identify things like barbed wire fences to posts. >> reporter: from the san jose fire department, the team rescued victims of the san jose floods back in february. now they're doing the same here around the houston area. it seems every day there's a different flood. that's why they say they have no idea when they'll be able to go home back to the bay area. i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay."

good morning. i'm landon dowdy live. wall street could start september in the green after the markets ended august with some gains. the dow rising for a fifth straight month. investors are awaiting the big anymore report. another month of steady hiring with unemployment holding at a 16-year low. the nasdaq up 60 to 6428. several top tech executives have signed a letter urging president trump to protect so-called dreamers. the president is considering whether to end an obama-era program that would keep nearly 800,000 people brought to the u.s. as children from being deported. executives say the dreamers are vital to the future of their companies as well as the u.s. economy. and samsung has secured a permit to test a self-driving car in california just months after rival apple got

permission. samsung received a similar permit in south korea to test the car fitted with sensors and software. it plans to use the car to develop technology that could drive in adverse weather. however, samsung says it has no plans to make actual cars. back over to you. >> thanks. new this morning san diego's seaworld is going to court seeking a restraining order against three peta protesters. seaworld says the protesters barged into the orca encounter show last month demanding the whales be released. backlash against seaworld intensified in 2013. you may remember after the release of the documentary showing the dangers of keeping orcas in captivity. the company is starting to phase out some of its whale shows. kari is telling you to be ready for the heat. today is the peak. >> we will be feeling some extremely hot weather today. an excessive heat warning, poor

♪ you )re watching today in the by and the bay area under a heat welcome back. it is now 4:45 and it's already hot out there. you're watching "today in the bay," and the bay area is under a heat warning once again. live pictures from our network of cameras. look at the map, a lot of red there. likely you are under that part of the map. >> it seems like no relief out there today. >> that little sliver is very small. >> and that's where you have the heat advisories in effect. it will be hot all around the bay area and it is some of the hottest weather so far this summer. we could be setting new records and we'll talk about that as you walk out the door it already feels warm. it's in the low 70s in the south bay and the peninsula, the tri-valley at 66 degrees. also in the north bay, mild in

san francisco with the start out at 70 degrees. our high temperatures,gilroy a high of 108 degrees. 103 in downtown san jose. and 113 degrees in antioch. danville, 110. hayward will be up to 101 degrees. in belmont expect a high of 98 degrees and 101 in palo alto and san francisco will be reaching into the low 90s in the mission district. the outer sunset will be warm at 86 and 103 in sonoma. santa rosa a high of 105 degrees and that seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen. you'll see we will have several days of this high heat and more poor air quality. it's unhealthy for all groups and is the first time we've had that type of poor air quality in several years. even if you have breathing problems or if you don't, it's not the time to go out for a long walk or a jog as those

temperatures really heat up. we have several temperatures that may be setting some new records. we've been talking about the potential of reaching 115 degrees in parts of the tri-valley, san jose expecting a high up to 104. and the old record is 101. some of these temperature records go back to 1950 and we may see those going by the wayside. so we are dealing with some extreme temperatures today as you're getting ready this morning. it will be a great day to go swimming, go to the beach, and of course you don't want to forget the sunglasses. also something to help keep you cool or give you shade at the beach if you're going to half moon bay look at these temperatures here. for this afternoon we'll be up to 88 degrees. i think there will be a lot more people in the water than we normally see. and as we go into the next several days in san francisco, the only thing that may break the heat could be the chance of some thunderstorms heading into sunday as well as labor day. the chance right now looks very

slight. will still be well above average. we'll be up to 112. 110 tomorrow. just as hot and then that chance of some isolated thunderstorms on sunday and monday. we'll talk more about this and mike starts out with some closures for mass transit. >> one of them for the week, one of them already started through the weekend. those stations are closed through tuesday. they'll reopen for tuesday's commute. track work going on there. the lake merritt station is where the focus is. we've seen this before. that starts tomorrow, though. friday is open for service today. now a look at the roadways. a smooth drive. the speed sensors are not seeing any problem. a smooth flow of traffic with waze and we'll look further north, starts out of highway 4. the obvious choice you might think cutting the corner is

faster. it is not. stick to the freeways 4 to 680. that's the fastest route. make sure you check your waze team because you'll be using it through the holiday weekend if you're going to the beach. you want to check the best ro e route. nbc bay area wazers. i don't think i can help you get out of the hot weather. >> governor jerry browne is heading to russia next week. he's scheduled to arrive on tuesday. brown's effort to promote international collaboration on fighting global warming as the white house takes a back seat on the issue. news comes as the u.s. demands russia close its consulate in san francisco by tomorrow. >> there's escalating tension as you likely know and this consulate in san francisco is one of three closures by the

u.s. state department. yesterday dozens of russians living here lined up. many of them scrambling to get their passports updated. the closure was a shock to them. >> i read the news, i'd better check if my passport is ready. luckily it was. >> the other two closures are diplomatic annexes in washington, d.c., and new york. we did check overnight and the only russian consulates remaining in the u.s. are now open in seattle and houston. >> jimmy gomez sent more than 200,000 pieces of mail to constituents to the tune of $62,000 paid for by taxpayers. one letter invited women to a self-defense class. another to a bird watching event. last year state lawmakers spent more than $3 million sending similar letters. the legislative perk is supposed to be noncampaign related. the associated press reports

most of the letters were sent right before lawmakers were re-elected. >> new storm water fee. new legislation was approved. it will give local governments permission to charge for storm water management systems without going to the voters for approval. the supporters say this will help prevent flooding and save water. opponents say this violates the right to vote on taxes. taking on a controversial breitbart. right-wing figures like my low yannapoulos arguing they just want to provoke people. napolitano addressed the political science group last

night saying white supremacy cannot be tolerated but stopped short saying such people should be denied the right to speak on college campuses. 4:52 and looking live at the bay bridge will be closed briefly tomorrow as we say good-bye to the old eastern span. crew also start the final round of implosions to remove the foundation piers that once supported the bridge. divers who can take note -- drivers, i should say -- will briefly close the eastern span of the bridge for about 20 minutes for each of the implosions. there are 11 piers. implosions began 10:30 saturday morning. if the seals get too close they could be delayed to sunday or monday. >> a chance to take to the field, oakland's high school football team begins their new season with the home opener

tonight. the team called the warriors just like the other winning team in oakland. they took oakland by storm last december beating la jolla county day school to win a 5a division championship. tonight's home opener is at 7:00. some of the alumni and raderettes will be there. the heat wave is taking a toll on the bay area forcing a lot of event organizers to rethink what they're going to do. we'll show you the impact this heat wave is having on a long running wine celebration. but, first, happening now breaking news out of napa county. firefighters are on the scene of a two-acre fire burning at a landfill in calistoga. we just checked with the fire department. it's about tcontained.
