prepare to sizzle. we are under a micro climate weather alert as the bay area braces for what may be the most severe heat we've seen in more than a decade. a live look outside at san jose and san francisco. some paths 110 degrees today. certainly a hot one out there. good morning and thank you for joining us. i'm marcus washington. hopefully laura garcia-cannon has some place cool to go. >> this is one of those unusual weekends where even the beaches will be heating up. just a heads-up about that. it will be a nice way to cool off. we have some much milder temperatures in san jose it's 71 degrees. 64 in oakland and looking at the forecast today unbearably hot.

san jose 103 degrees. make has a potential problem. to universal studios. if you head over to i-5 there is a crash reported, a hit-and-run. there may be a lane blocked. that's heading up to the windy part. keep that in mind. no problems. 13 minutes for the drive time. you're not even tapping the breaks.

back to you. >> back to our weather alert coverage we're talking about hitting the peak of the heat wave. live at the agency's equipment yard in fremont with what's being done to conserve that energy. sharon? >> reporter: this is the main emergency center. you can see rows and rows sent out as needed. he says there were no major outages. they were working so hard yet with everyone using their ac they didn't have a chance to cool off overnight. if that happens in your

neighborhood pg&e says it's ready to respond. they asked customers to be ready today and the next few days for power outages. >> avoid using your oven so you keep your home cool, use the microwave or go outside and grill. set it to a temperature like 78 degrees or higher. health permitting. >> reporter: and remember your pets. keep them indoors and give them plenty of water. local vets and animal shelters seeing reports of heat problems with pets. they're in for record heat. reporting live in fremont, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> we do have team coverage of the sizzling temperatures the

temperatures don't just drop off. >> no, they don't, and that's why we're not able to let the house cool down. for all the inland areas even the coast will be through labor day. the record is 109. we haven't had weather with such a prolonged stretch since 2006 so it's been a long time and everybody said, yeah, it gets hot here and there. this is above and beyond what we normally see. we'll watch that go up today and see if some of these records will fall.

the developing situation in texas. today marks one week since hurricane harvey barreled into the gulf coast. floodwaters are receding so it's hard to tell. a better glimpse of the damage behind. in harris county alone, which is the -- houston is the county seat of that, more than 500 people lost their vehicle. there have been 38 storm related deaths. people are beginning the process. some of these homes will not be livable ever, sarah. >> reporter: some may need to be torn down.

they're seeing their homes for the first time a lot of shock. more than 100,000 homes are damaged. waterlogged and weary. homeowners cleaning up after harvey. >> material can be replaced. we have each other and that's all that matters. >> reporter: still, other homes remain under water. >> what do you need at your house? >> reporter: and desperate residents continue to be rescued. floodwaters in beaumont, texas, overwhelmed the main water pump station. vice president mike pence toured damage thursday just days after the president's visit. >> we're just going to stay with the people of texas all the way through not just in the weeks and months but likely the years that it will take for us to rebuild.

force was investigating the car theft ring when littlecloud opened fire. last night we learned that he was also wanted by police. friends and family have been asking for him to turn himself in. littlecloud was released from state prison in 2011. this was part of a program to row deuce overcrowding. >> so based on his offense, he was supervised. >> in a jailhouse interview littlecloud's girlfriend had a message for him. he's always in my heart. >> a busy weekend for law enforcement agencies out in full force looking for drunk drivers. california highway patrol is going into its maximum enforcement period starting at 6:00 tonight and running through

there will be a surge in humidity on sunday as well as monday and that could make it feel a lot more humid but it could bring an isolated risk of thunderstorms as we go into the first part of next week. this could increase the risk of more wildfires sparked by lightning. a traffic alert for san jose. >> we just have the slower moving vehicles. that is not the concern we're looking to southbound 101. spilled on the roadway and may be a punctured fuel tank as well. this is very unexpected for folks traveling south at highway

it is 5: 14. spots like livermore temperatures will possibly set a new record high today. i want to show you the temperature trend already at 10:00. it is 88 degrees. that's above our normal high temperature for this time of year and it continues to go up from there reaching up to 113 degrees by 4:00 today. dangerous heat. >> it's a safeway truck. overturned on the roadway including some fuel. we're talking about what else we've learned from chp coming up. >> a legislative proposal to ease permitting is making headlines.

they captured pictures of his car and daughters and in this case they're home. it went unnoticed by the federal government passed a law, a bipartisan law, that would allow police departments to use rapid dna machines, a simulation. police officers will swab people accused of felonies, put the sample in a machine, send the data to a national database and let them know if their suspect is connected to other crimes through dna. california police officers already swab suspects. results could take days. the machine's maker says it's like scanning fingerprints. >> just like fingerprints from paper and ink that had to sit for week, dna goes through the same process now. >> we'll talk more about the

a mild start. we're at 81 degrees. our average high temperature is 82 but look at how hot it will be. and the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen and we're going to see those temperatures now as you head out the door. oakland, 64. in some spots it feels really nice. we are warmer now as you head out the door. very hot today. even goes to the coastline, 84 degrees.

do some crafts and stay in the gym but it will be an extremely hot day and especially for those schools where they're blasting the air conditioning trying to keep the kids cool as you head to pick them up it will already be hot and we'll have poor air quality. many people will be off tomorrow. if you're heading to southern california it will be very warm there as well. highs up to 116 degrees. a chance of thunderstorms and that will be something to keep an eye on if you're picnicking in san francisco, 77 for the high. dangerous heat over the next several days and that thunderstorm chance may be the only thing that knocks back the heat a little. >> two big crashes.

right here at 101 this is counter commute but a big problem and will be visible around 101/85 interchange. the overturned safeway truck, and a fuel spill. looking really good on this map but now north of the bay bridge here to westbound 80. busting out and breaking wind shields or at least one and that will be an issue. they may have to stop traffic if they have to assess damage for that. that would be a horrible thing. i will show you waze because already waze is suggesting that you go around that backup. if that's your destination instead of traveling here.

"the mercury news" reports the 49ers are warning santa clara officials cold play will likely defy the city's 10:00 p.m. week night curfew. that is october 4th which is a wednesday. cold play typically plays until 11:00. the city council denied a request. abruptly stopping the show could cause a safety threat. it would be up to police to force the concert to stop. a new report finds adult obesity remained stable in the majority of states. obesity rates still over 35% in five states. that report also found racial

minorities, people without college education and those living in the south and midwest are more likely to be overweight. california is not one of those states with over 35% obesity. we did some research to find out where our state stands. the latest numbers show that 24.7% of adults in california qualify as obese. as overweight. the distinctions have to do with the body mass index. this weekend a famous bay area snowball is headed to nevada. >> we profiled the owner before. we followed the story for decades. she had that snowball since 1976. a rare snowstorm blanketed the santa clara valley. we learned from her son she passed away and now the family will hold a memorial service. her son plans to take her snowball to his home in nevada where he will continue to preserve it. >> interesting.

the tri-valley, san francisco, 58 in the north bay as we talk about spots like concord. going to 110 at 3:00 p.m. so make your plans accordingly. mike has a traffic alert. >> it's going to take a while in a couple of key spots. a preholiday friday, very unexpected coming into san pablo. there's a truck that might have caused a second crash and another overturned truck. i know the two right lanes are blocked and we will track that. just trying to take care of

business. the south and everything is fine except for the crash here, approaching 85. more details coming up but note there is a crash blocking multiple lanes as well. back to you, kris. our first video in of a landfill fire. they can burn for a while. several agencies are helping to fight the blaze there were reports this was a three-alarm fire burning at least two acres. we just launched sky ranger hoping to bring you live pictures but this is a concern because we know it is very dry there and with these hot temperatures it is a very dangerous situation for firefighters as well. now back to our micro climate alert coverage as the weekend heat wave rolls in. it is important to be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion

"today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live from the alameda county fair grounds with where we can expect to see thousands of people, pete, trying to withstand the heat. what should they be watching for if they're outside? >> reporter: good morning to you, kris. i'm sure they won't be wearing a coat like i'm wearing. now they're expecting about 35,000 people show up over the week. an organizer tells me they're more than prepared for the incoming heat wave. >> all of the buildings that house vendors air-conditioned. we'll have five misters where water and a mist form to be refreshing. we'll have five stations of that to help people. the fair grounds have many, many trees. it's pretty easy to get out of the direct sun. >> reporter: look at this video from the fair grounds that we

shot yesterday. crews putting up what looks like a black cover hopefully to shield folks from the heat when they're here this weekend. an organizer tells me plenty of medical assistance on site as well. two things come to mind, heat exhaustion and heat stroke and both should be handled in two different ways. according to the mayo clinic those symptoms are faintness, nausea, and weakness and you want to move the person out of the heat, have them drink cool water and cool them down by spraying or sponging them with some cool water. in the event of heat stroke symptoms are fever, rapid pulse and rapid breathing. instead of giving them water cover with cool sheets or if you have ice packs around put them on their neck and use a fan while misting them with cool water. you want to get medical help asap. if needed do the same with folks suffering from heat exhaustion. stay hydrated and cooldown.

trujillo is in houston, he's here with his report. >> this is part of the recovery effort. drugstores are beginning to open. means medicine is available in houston once again but it's on a limited basis. not all these stores are open all the time as they normally advertise. stores that say they open 24 hours a day are limiting those hours. the limited reopening is catching many customers by surprise. the stores are not fully operational. there's more recovery in the suburbs as well as victims are assessing the damage caused by harvey. and then the victims who are just now feeling the impact of the hurricane, almost a full week after it made landfall. task force three was back in rescue mode racing to the town of wharton where floodwaters covered the roadway leading into town. >> a lot of hazards we are unable to identify until we're

on top of them, barbed wire fences to signposts. >> reporter: arthur belton is from the san jose fire department. his team rescued people back in february. now they're doing the same here around the houston area and it seems like almost every day there is a different flood in a different part of town. that's why task force three says they have no idea when they'll be able to go home back to the bay area. in houston, texas, i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> a tough situation. we thank damian for being out there with his crew. in the south bay a couple inches. one in the south bay. most of the traffic sensors are great. this is a big crash i've been talking about. three lanes are blocked. southbound, the backup we're told by our photographer who has arrived on scene about three-quarters of a mile. that's really unexpected especially counter commute and especially preholiday friday. use monterey, old monterey or el

camino. that roadway extends in the south bay. the rest the bay moves bell. we have your other crash, a sig alert. westbound 80 at san pablo dam road. the overcrossing has been hit by a big rig. better news for the toll za if folks are already heading there. that is better news because traffic is held up on the freeway. >> that's a tough way to get in, right? we know they have to check that for structural damage. it takes a while. it will be a while to find some place to keep cool. >> people are heading to their destination this holiday week. not a way to escape. >> taking a dip in the -- at the beach. it's only 55 degrees as far as the water temperatures but the air temperature is going to be up to 89 degrees at the coast so, yeah, you can hit up some of the bay area beaches and the bay will be at 95 degrees. dangerous heat inland.

up to 109 and then on sunday it is going to be just as hot. in fact, we may be fact touring in more humidity so that will be something may make it feel more uncomfortable. some of the events this weekend the millbrae art and wine festival. make sure you stay hydrated. drink lots of water and see if they have a misting station like at the scottish highland gathering and games in pleasanton. look at these temperatures. i know they do that one-mile run around the track. take it easy during the hottest hours of the day where we will be reaching up to 111 degrees by 5:00. and it stays in the triple digits throughout the day. meantime on sunday in capitola the the begonia festival. temperatures at 74. all of the bay area beaches will be very popular, very packed

you heard kari talk about it - the heat is our top story. and many bay area schools are taking precautions. vo+rail here )s a look at some of the changes. san ramon valley schools are cancelling outdoor sports. willow glen elementary is keeping kids inside. the s-f gate reports: orinda schools will close early. as will schools in novato - where classrooms have no air conditioning. novato is also moving up saturday )s football game. it will start at 11 - instead of 2. marcus/vo new overnight: a crash in livermore led to a brush fire along 580. authorities say crews found a vehicle down an embankment. it was on fire. this happened along the interstate - near north flynn road - around 1:45am. crews had to shut down the entire eastbound side of the freeway for a bit - so a medical helicopter could land. no word on the driver )s condition. cal fire quickly contained the 5- acre brush fire. marcus/rail this just in - new jobs numbers are out.

within the last few minutes, the labor department reported that august saw56- thousand new jobs. the expected number was 180- thousand. the unemployment rate remained steady .. at 4- point-4-percent. ==krisvo== those are not the numbers the president wanted to see. ==marcus/cam5== scott.. steady growth.. but not something he can boast too much about. scott especially since the labor department said it had to revise its previous reports downwards. june and july weren )t as good s we thought. that said.. 156-thousand jobs is growth. and i )ve always told you.. a small change in uneployment - a tenth of a percent - is not worth worryng about. take vo the other big news: the white house might announce the end of daca as soon as today. the deferred action for childhood arrivals system was put into place by president obama. it protects immigrants who may not have even been aware they were in the country illegally. scott the wall street journal says the president )s lawyers are in contact with special prosecutor bob muller.. trying to convince muller the president did not commit

obstruction of justice when vo he fired fbi director james comey. you )ll recall president trump outright said he fired comey (because ( of the russian investigation in an interview with nbc )s lester holt. the big takeaway today.. trump s lawyers seem to think obstruction charges are something they need to worry about. scott/vo treasury secretary steve mnuchin and his wife are under investigation by the inspector general of the treasury.. after their rather infamous flight to fort knox kentucky. his wife got into hot water for making fun of someone on the internet that day. but now there are questions as to why they used a government jet - cabinet members usually fly commercial.. scott and whether it was simply co- incidence they had to be at fort knox on a government jet at the very same time the path of the solar eclipse passed overhead. scott/vo mnuchin also says he )s not committed to putting harriet tubman on the 20-dollar bill. that was a plan put in place by his predecessor.. appointed by presidnet obama.

>> if you're driving across the bay bridge you may deal with delays. caltrans will start demolishing the old piers. crews will be imploding the piers. starting tomorrow rolling closures on that bridge during the demolition. the bike and walking path will be closed at times. the search is on for a man who may be connected with three high-profile crimes. sheriff's deputies in nevada county in the sierra are looking for kurt collins. they say he is a suspect or person of interest in a murder, attempted murder, and missing person's case. it happened in the small town of washington northeast of lake tahoe. investigators say collins lives an isolated lifestyle in the forest relying on the land for food and shelter. folks who know him say his behavior is odd.
