day. people are out and still at it. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez on this labor day monday. it wasn't hard to come in to work. >> we're like it's fine we're working. >> and it looks like today the bay area will see a nice cooldown including the peninsula. i know a lot of folks were scrambling because of the warm-up. look at the temperatures right now, a mild start, the south bay 75. the tri-valley, 74. san francisco much more normal, 65 degrees. the east bay, 67. the north bay, 64. a quick peek at what you can expect today. we're going to see anywhere between a 20 to 10 degree drop

those developments. what's the reaction this morning? >> reporter: very dense reaction, a little worrisome here watching the events going on now. the north korean leader enjoys provoking the u.s. in the holidays. >> shock waves around the globe. the u.s., japan, france, great britain, and south korean diplomats all called for an emergency u.n. security council meeting this morning. >> north korea is the most dangerous place on the face of the planet. jim mattis gave a stern warning to the north korean leader. >> any threat to the united states or its territories including guam or our allies

replace it. 5:04. firefighters are battling flames growing in gilroy this hour. damian trujillo is live with the progress firefighters have been making. we know the cause of the fire now. >> reporter: it's unofficial at this point but witnesses do tell us that children may have been playing with fireworks in this location but, again, the fire department is not confirm that as of this point. this is all the latest and they're making that huge trek up the hill, rugged terrain up here in the santa teresa boulevard hills in gilroy. firefighters do not know the official cause. they are busy trying to get some sort of containment around the fire. ar

up here in eagle rich. no evacuations at this point. rough terrain making the fire difficult to fight. crews have thousands of feet of water hose laid out uphill and downhill and here is another problem. this fire started at night so getting all the help from cal fire was not possible. >> we still have 100 firefighters out here. it's very difficult terrain. you can see it's very dark, very difficult terrain. very steep. early on in the fire it was getting towards dusk so cal fire was unable to launch aircraft so we did not get that initial air drop. >> reporter: again, the rumor from witnesses who said children may have been playing with fireworks is unconfirmed by the fire department. first they want to contain the fire and then see how it actually started. this is not that far from the

gilroy garden amusement park. rough terrain, very steep. live in gilroy, i'm damian trujillo. >> pg&e crews are getting a handle on the heat-related power outages around the bay area. that includes about a double home in a neighborhood between 85 and 280. the neighborhood has been without power nearly 36 hours now with an estimated repair time of 6:00 this morning. we talked with neighbors who say they're getting weary from roughing it. >> they will get it back.

>> we can't really cook and shower. >> the only two experiencing outages are san jose and milpitas, the number of homes affected about 300. the intense heat drew many people to bay area beaches. for many of those lifeguard teams that resulted in more water rescues including ocean beach. park service says there were more than 20 rescues that included a father and son who were body boarding and didn't notice they were getting farther and farther away from the shore. >> before i knew it, it looked like i was getting far away. i started worrying. >> we're so far away. and then we were worrying and trying to get out but we couldn't and then the lifeguard helped us out.

good morning. it is 5:13 and we're noticing temperatures down four degrees from yesterday this hour. we are tracking a much cooler labor day ahead plus we have some rain chances on the way.

only green for you. travel times through the tri-valley. good stuff. we'll keep an eye on things this labor day commute. it is 5:15 now. new this morning police say a woman faces charges after allegedly hitting her 9-year-old daughter at a b.a.r.t. station. this happened saturday at the mcarthur b.a.r.t. station where the woman backhand slapped her child. police say the mother was intoxicated and was booked into jail. child protective services are investigating. police say a burlingame man used a knife to hold up a passenger. the suspect ran when the passenger stopped but police arrested him. we did some recent stories about b.a.r.t. b.a.r.t. says officers are being deployed to hot spots in an attempt to prevent assaults and robberies. the agency is working to hire more officers to make that happen.

also into later tonight talking about tropical storm lidia. those are the remnants from the south and that will spark the chance of seeing some thunderstorms and what brought plenty of rain for l.a. i wan to talk about hurricane irma and its projected path. as of right now the main event will be thursday heading into friday. it looks like florida will be on the projected path and environmental conditions could kick that up to a category 4, possibly 5 for friday. muggy conditions for today. a nice cooling trend on the way as we head into wednesday. even for inland areas finally going to catch a break from the triple digits and 90s. mike? >> i was done with the triple digits a while ago. >> both across the bay or in the

children now set a record high this year in terms of vac nation turnout after a new state law passed requiring them to get vaccinated if they were going to public schools. public health discovered a statewide spike in vaccination rates, something we haven't seen since 2001. more than 90% of kindergartners got their shot. parents worry about making lunch for their kids school or the kind of foods school is making. a healthy and tasty new choice. the company will be featured. >> your meals have things like meatless pepperoni, brown rice, veggies. >> real fresh food, no artificial anything in meals.

muggier. one of the hotter spots over the weekend at 74 and why are we in such a nice cooldown? remnants of tropical storm lidia are going to be pushing us into the north. that will bring a very humid labor day to the bay area. >> a crash in the north bay. a smooth drive. many people are on vacation. just off that area where it splits with 101 and 580. no major injuries there. no backup. oakland where we see a lot of traffic past the seem as well. just a few.

>> reporter: over the smoky skies, yet another spare the air alert. that smoke is coming from fires up north even as far as oregon and speaking of fire officials it will stay that way as long as we're dealing with this unusual hot weather. >> there are multiple fires that are happening if the general vicinity of each other, they join them together. smoke produced from that. you have the current weather system with the high fresh is turning the smoke and bringing it down really from northern california. >> reporter: it's been an issue for the past few days more to the inland parts. now the smoke may irritate the eyes and your sinuses in some cases.

you want to limit outdoor activity. that may be tough with the labor day activity. prevent outside air from coming inside. if possible remain indoors with windows and doors closed. you can't do that because of the high temperatures. seek out cooling centers nearby. the smoke will stay as long as we deal with this weather system. we'll continue to monitor conditions here on the ground and provide any new updates as they come in. pete suratos for "today in the bay." 5:34 and developing now thousands of people in texas will spend this labor day cleaning up. officials say their top priority is to help clean up debris. floodwaters recede, we are getting a better sense of the damage hurricane harvey has left behind.

it is kler already even this hour we're expecting to feel cooler. a quick check of the micro climate highs for today. san francisco finally down to 70s. in the south bay down to the 80s for today. >> folks going 65. that's the limit. >> 5:43 and breaking news out of england the royal family will soon be a family of five. announcing the duke and duchess of cambridge are pregnant with their third child. apparently queen elizabeth is pleased by the news. fifth in line to the throne.

this morning the l.a. fire department says the blaze is only 30% contained and has burned 7,000 acres. at last check the flames spread to homes, forced hundreds of people out of their homes and closed part of the 210 freeway. officials say four firefighters were hurt in the firefight and the governor declared a state of emergency. >> pretty much everywhere people will be walking out of their doors breathing a sigh of he leaf. one of the most severe heat waves ever is now over. san francisco recorded an all-time high of 105 degrees. san jose and observing hit new records for the month of september. it has some asking if this is a result of climate change. we did some digging overnight and looked closer at the temperatures.

in that time the amount of record breaking highs outnumbered record breaking lows by 2 to 1. record highs during the past year have outnumbered the record lows at nearly double the rate almost 4 to 1. it is labor day after all. the international union rallied plans in downtown observing, san jose and watsonville. members will call for a national $15 minimum hourly wage. nbc bay area will have a crew there. and the white house is once again busy. >> scott mcgrew, not a lot of options here. >> tensions are already in place, china clearly not going to take any further action and a military response by the u.s. problematic at best.

they may test as soon as today. the icbm capable of hitting the west coast. this comes a day after another nuclear test in which north korea detonated a hydrogen bomb. north korea claims it tested before and it was lying at the time. more importantly they're smaller in size. they can fit on the top of the missile. south korean military forces launched a number of missiles into the sea over the weekend. missile interceptors but has not tried to shoot down a north korean missile. the white house says it may end a free trade deal with south

it's going to feel a lot cooler out there. so let's look at the rest of the bay area. we're seeing a lot of humidity out there because storm lidia bringing plenty of showers to l.a. yesterday and we'll see more showers today in l.a. but that's also going to push north and that's going to bring a slight risk for isolated thunderstorms. models will get a good chance as we head later in the day. maybe even some fog along the coast and those temperatures begin to drop nicely. a very pleasant weekend. mike, how the roads? >> well, they're clear. labor day. a nice easy drive. a drive. we'll move you over to where we usually see some slowing through livermore. the tri-valley has no problem.
