it is tuesday morning, believe it or not. a live look outside at the golden gate bridge. many of you coming off an extended labor day weekend. it may feel like monday. look at that. already a day in the books. good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm marcus washington. more people getting on the roads already seeing some issues on the road. >> there is an issue on the cal train tracks. mangled metal. that is the vehicle that was hit by the caltrain supply train, from what i understand, on the tracks in redwood city. pete suratos will come up in just a couple seconds. we are talking about this crash stopping trains right now.

we just learned from the public information officer who told us they will have a bus in place. between palo alto and redwood city stations. on the roadway the traffic gets by all right. we'll end with this video and the rest of your traffic coming up shortly. over to kari before we get the details from pete. we have higher humidity as you get ready to head out the door. we will have slightly more comfortable weather today and right now in the low 70s so we do start out with much warmer than average temperatures. as we get a look at the high temperatures by this afternoon we'll be up to 73 degrees in san francisco with some lower 90s for the tri-valley and the delta. you'll feel that humidity as we go through the day. we'll talk about that and also what's ahead as we go through the weekend in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. and back to the breaking news on the peninsula. a deadly accident involving

caltrain in redwood city. >> pete suratos just arrived on the scene. what do you know so far, pete? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and marcus. we're just to the scene on the corner of buckingham and westmoreland avenue. where this crash began right here. you're looking at where the car initially crashed driving through the fence on to the railroad tracks. i was going to show you some of the video from what's left of the car. we can report one person is dead as a result of the accident. according to chp. we're learning from chp this took place just before 2:00 a.m., the car becoming disabled after driving onto the tracks, the area we showed you. we do know the car was struck by an oncoming caltrain heading north to san francisco and dragged that car half a mile. mike mentioned that car was carrying supplies at the time of the crash. our assignment desk just got

this information from caltrain telling us the car was on its roof when the train hit it and the impact of the train is what turned this collision fatal. back out live on the scene looking at where that car crashed through the fence onto the tracks. there was only one person in the vehicle. it is still under investigation with chp. once we get more information on that we'll bring you that in the next hour. we're live in redwood city, pete suratos, "today in the bay." >> we'll check back with you then, pete, thank you very much. hours from now we're expected to learn president trump's decision on daca, the program that allows young, undocumented immigrants to live and work in the u.s. legally. in a tweet from the president hinting at the possible decision. he writes, quote, big week coming up. attorney general jeff sessions will hold a news conference at 8:00 to make the official announcement. it could impact thousands of

people and companies in the bay area. white house sources tell nbc news the president will likely end the program with a six-month delay for congress to come up with a fix. many in the bay area are on edge. >> i think the biggest thing i'm afraid of is losing our jobs because we will not have a work permit. >> nine states have threatened to sue the trump administration if the president does end the daca program and if he does not get rid of it ten other states are threatening to sue him to try to force him to. >> 4:34. the city of piedmont may be under new leadership as soon as tonight when the councilmembers are scheduled to appoint a new mayor. mayor wheeler resigned after media posts racially charged. wheeler has since resigned from the city council as well. members are set to hold a vote tonight. that meeting begins at 7:30. happening now hurricane irma is a category 4 storm.

warnings have been issued for the u.s. territories of puerto rico and the virgin islands. the team says there was an increase in the chance the storm could hit florida. american red cross vehicles will head for preparation for a possible landfall. 12 volunteers will go to operate vehicles. this morning search and rescue task force is back at oakland though they, too, may head to florida for hurricane irma. the team returned from flood-ravaged texas last night with stories of courage and even a few laughs. >> the cattle were up to their ears in water. the people from texas were there to help take them to high ground and also the horses. >> a very texas moment right there. >> it was extremely texas. >> a spokesperson tells us that if irma makes landfall the team could try to fly to florida as

nasdaq up six to 6435. drivers may soon see some relief at the gas pump. prices would spike in the aftermath of hurricane harvey are coming back down on expectations that texas can get back on its feet. some refineries have restarted operations. the colonial pipeline, the largest fuel system, has also restarted lines that deliver gas to the east coast. also gas prices are down about 4% today. and jaguar believes the future of cars will be in the steering wheel. they will unveil a standalone wheel on thursday you can carry around and plug into your car's steering column. it wants it to be a trusted companion in your home and imagines you talking to it to help you perform hundreds of tasks. back over to you. >> you carry your steering wheel around? maybe i'm not awake enough, landon.

4:44. here we go. people living on the east coast may be getting an extended summer. yesterday maine's lobster predicted six more weeks of summer for the third year in a row. >> is this like a new punxsutawney phil? >> exactly. the lobster has become their own punxsutawney phil. the prediction is based on what the scroll the claw picks up and opens as opposed to looking at the shadow. the lobster is quite skilled at his prediction of the weather. >> now the last two years he was right both years. in mid-october it was still around 65 degrees in belfast and that's close to summer for maine. >> pete is back in the water basking in the warmth of his prediction. >> i feel like i'm still sleeping. >> when i was in louisiana they had what looked like a ground hog and used that. maybe each state has their own creature that predicts the weather.

maybe it's like the sea otters or something. i don't know. >> we'll figure something out. and it's going to be a very warm day. no need for looking at the lobsters and all of that stuff. i'll tell you what it's going to be like as we take a live look outside at the peninsula in the middle of the screen looking at palo alto feels humid, too. if you're trying to cool down the house and it feels muggy outside, it's not helping. checking out the seven-day forecast starting in the south bay. our temperatures pretty much hold steady over the next several days, and we are going to be heading up to 85 degrees today in san jose. for the south county into the upper 80s and for the tri-valley upper 80s there as well. a few spots like antioch and livermore hitting 90 degrees. oakland today at 7. and for the peninsula, 82 in palo alto. san francisco reaching into the

upper 60s and the outer sunset. 73 on the embarcadero. the north bay today up to the mid-80s. so it will still be warm and also we throw in that humidity that we've had over the past couple of days and it does feel very uncomfortable. so as you're getting ready this morning you still need the short sleeves. no need for a jacket. a great day for some shorts if you can try to stay comfortable. we're still trying to stay cool. but one cool spot where we will still have a lot of clouds throughout the day maybe today you're still off an extra day from the holiday. in the low 70s by this afternoon. not much of a change in those temperatures there. in san francisco we're looking at highs in the low 70s today and tomorrow. there will be a few spotty showers around the area, but i don't think we'll see much of that here like we had over the weekend. as we look at the inland areas, 85 degrees today and then it does get warmer toward the end of the forecast. do expect another warm weekend. and, mike, the tracks, breaking

news in redwood city. >> because of the deadly crash that pete told but in redwood city south of the redwood city station on a street called buckingham which only affects the end of the street, not el camino or middle field or wood side road, but it's in that area. there's a bus bridge. we know it will happen because caltrain told us to expect delays between palo alto and redwood city. they will have it set up and it will bridge that gap that is going to go on until they complete the deadly crash investigation. we're going to follow that with pete as well. it's here on the peninsula. the freeways themselves are moving well. a clean, easy drive throughout much of the bay but much heavier traffic than yesterday. back to work after some vacation over the weekend. a lot of folks traveling across the san mateo bridge. there's a disabled vehicle blocking one lane. your slow lane. that's great here. the bay bridge, a quick look

here as well. already seeing the cash lanes on either side looked like all opened up in the last few minutes. the left side still has one lane closed. we expect a heavy backup to form just about 5:15, 5:20. we'll track that. no need for a reroute right now. to see if you do need to reroute check your waze app which is on your phone. you check your profile and click on your team. make sure you select nbc bay area wazers and we'll all share that commute. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. it's 4:49 right now. happening today san jose city leaders asking for feedback on a plan to add bike lines along minnesota avenue in willow glen. subject to what we've been covering for years. in 2015 the city made lincoln avenue a three-lane road to accommodate bicyclists and encourage slower driving. the change became permanent in 2016. now the city says adding bike lanes will make minnesota avenue safer but not everyone agrees.

he gave nbc bay area this statement. i'm deeply disappointed by what's alleged in the grand jury's indictment. my campaign never would have accepted a single penny of these contributions had we known how they were being made. a right-wing activist accused of wielding weapons during several rallies is due in court this morning. videos show him confronting protesters with sticks and clubs. authorities arrested him at a rally in march. a judge previously ordered him to stay away from rallies in berkeley. the man accused in the deadly shooting of kate steinle is due back in court for a pretrial hearing. jury selection is scheduled to start this week in the murder trial involving jose garcia

and i'm an arborist with i'pg&e in the sierras. the drought in california has killed trees on a massive scale. any of those trees that fail into power lines could cause a wildfire or a power outage. public safety is the main goal of our program. that's why we're out removing these hundreds of thousands of hazard trees. having tools and technology gives us a huge edge to identify hazard trees. my hope is that the work we're performing allows that these forests can be sustained and enjoyed by the community in the future. together, we're building a better california.
