in the upper 60s heading into the mid-80s with breezy winds. we'll get more sunshine today. it will feel nicer as we get a look at the high temperatures. we'll still have upper 80s, warm temperatures from concord to northern hills. north bay mid-80s and san francisco, 73 degrees. we'll take a closer look at this and a crash in the east bay. >> calmer conditions and light roadways keep everything moving at speed. we are looking at highway 4 where we are learning about the crash. that's your commute direction where we often see the first slowing for the bay. so far, not a problem although the fast lane was reported blocked. i'll check that noninjury crash there. look at the great travel times. the commute should start to build from here on out. back to you. >> thank you. back to breaking news in san francisco. a crime in richmond district.

an attempted robbery quickly escalated into a shooting. it all happened in what many consider a very safe neighborhood. we are live at california street and 22nd avenue with the search for the suspect going on this morni morning. pete? >> reporter: good morning. i just got off the phone with the police. they are looking for the suspect in the shooting. we know it took place behind me near angelina's cafe on 22nd and california avenue. it is clear now. it was a different scene earlier this morning. you can see police on the scene there. they sent out a tweet regarding the shooting just before 1:00 a.m. police told the camera crew the victim may have been getting off a muni bus when it took place and led to an attempted robbery, which led to the shooting. we did do digging on crime stats in the area. here is what we were able to

find. the area doesn't see a lot of crime. there's only been five shootings in the past year, not including the one we are talking about right now and none of them were deadly. the closest one to 22nd and california avenue shooting we are talking about this morning is at the 4700 block of geary boulevard 20 blocks from this area. the injuries to the suspect are non-life threatening. i spoke to san francisco police and they are looking for the suspect. if you have information to help out with this case, contact police. live in san francisco, pete for today in the bay. >> thank you, pete. the other top story this morning, hurricane irma is blasting through the caribbean this morning. it stands at a category 5 storm as it continues to churn in the atlantic. it is one of the most powerful hurricanes recorded and heading toward florida. >> we want to bring in kari to look at the storm's path.

kari? >> we have seen this hurricane as a category 5 make land fall and head closer to st. martin. over the next couple days, moving over toward san juan, puerto rico, as a catastrophic hurricane with, as you mentioned, the strongest wind speeds ever recorded in a hurricane. over the next couple days, this will continue westward, affecting more islands over very warm waters. sea surface temperatures at 88 degrees. there's going to be a lot of fuel here for this to remain a major hurricane, even as it moves closer to florida by this weekend and early next week. so, very strong wind speed. a lot of flooding and rain expected. this is going to be another really heavy rainmaker and some very strong winds could cause a lot of damage over the next several days. >> florida is bracing. we want to take you to where a

state of emergency is being taken ahead of hurricane irma's possible land fall. people are scrambling to buy things ahead of the storm. people are starting to evacuate. gabe gutierrez is in florida with the preparations this morning. >> reporter: good morning. the keys have closed schools and are preparing to start evacuating tourists later today. we have seen a steady stream of cars. more traffic than usual on the road leading out of town. officials say to start expecting evacuations there as early as today. now, florida's governor declared a state of emergency for all of the state's counties. 7,000 members of florida's national guard are on alert as hurricane irma comes barrelling toward the u.s. puerto rico and 3 million american citizens are bracing for impact. the storm made the first land

fall on the caribbean island of barbuda. we have seen a run on gas, supplies, bottled water is flying off the shelves. officials say there is time to prepare, but warning residents to get out, especially if they are under mandatory evacuation orders. hurricane andrew slammed the coast of florida 25 years ago. where to stay updated on hurricane irma. meteorologi meteorologist kari tweeting about it. 5:05. now to the nation's capitol, today, congress could approve a $7.8 billion emergency relief aid. this comes after fema alerted fema funds will run out by friday. reaction continues to pour in over president trump's decision to end protections for

>> reporter: good morning. a big impact. the walnut creek transit village will have more housing and more parking for commuters to use the bart station behind me. starting saturday, new construction will begin on the parking that will go up here on the existing south parking lot. look at the tv screen. bart released the renderings to give you a sense of what this structure will look like when the garage is complete by late 2018. walnut creek bart will net an additional 100 parking spot, a new passenger drop off, updated bus stop, better paths for walking and biking and a new public art installation. the initial work will be realigning access to the current parking garage. it starts this weekend and goes to the next five weekends and results in closure of entrances to the current garage.

it is 5:13 with a mostly clear start this morning as we take a live look outside in fremont. get ready to head out the door, feels nice. we have temperatures that will start out in the low 70s at 9:00 this morning and rise into the mid-80s today.

overall, a very comfortable day. then we have a chance of showers in the forecast tomorrow before temperatures heat up. more on that and an update on hurricane irma coming up in five minutes. a very calm drive-through the north bay. an early crash in vallejo at highway 37. we'll watch as the commute builds there and around the bay. 5:14. new details on the controversial purchase of a san francisco city street. a board of supervisors met and decided to hold a meeting in november. they will decide whether or not to rescind the sale for $90,000 in auction. it is after homeowners association failed to pay the property tax. they say the city sent the tax bill to the wrong address. 5:14. new this morning, a sense of how americans feel about the economy. nbc news is breaking down the numbers today. new nbc wall street journal poll

found 53% of americans found ride sharing services are good for the country. 8% say apps like uber and lyft have been back. 33% have mixed reaction. home rental services like airbnb are popular. 9% say it's bad for the country. 41% are mixed. americans are not as confident in online shopping replacing traditional supermarkets. 23% say buying groceries online is positive. 25% say it's negative. 50% are mixed. we will take a deeper dive into the study coming up this morning on "today." she will report from los angeles. a growing number of americans are seeing the value of electric cars, especially with high gas prices. >> the leaf was one of the first widely available electric cars. nissan unveiled a new version.

it will go farther, 150 miles on a single charge. that's easily within the range of what most americans drive in a day. it falls behind tesla's model 3. congress is supposed to consider new laws for self-driving cars toods. the house is supposed to vote on a self-drive app for roads with minimal state oversight. it prevents states like california from setting individual standards on car that is might prevent someone from driving their robot car from oregon into california, for instance. congress is busy. hearings on russia, tax reform, daca, investors are more and more pessimistic that much of it will not g passed. we have stopped talking about the infrastructure bill. that was central to president trump's campaign. pushed stocks like caterpillar to new highs.

oracle let go half of the staff, about 2500. they are part of the microsystems oracle bought. a lot of the staff expected these layoffs. get phone calls or separation packets from fedex. they said they had the fedex app on their phone and said, hey, you are going to get a fedex from oracle. oh, i lost my job. from their phone. yeah. >> there you go. can you hear me now? a whole new meaning. this morning, grape growers say they are closely watching the weather. some say the humidity combined with rain could lead to fruit rot. that's the word from the newspaper today. it's reporting growers in sonoma county picked 15% to 20% of the crop. they have upped the harvest because of the recent heat wave. >> we have to crush those grapes

and do what we can to help the economy. >> we had a lot of grapes across the roadway. lots going on there. a lot moving. >> hopefully the heat wave moved out. >> yeah. now we have the concern of spotty showers that would be in the forecast. we will have that as we head into tomorrow and know that it's been humid out there. at least to start out this morning, it's not as bad. we are seeing the return of the marine layer bringing in patchy fog as we take a live look outside emeryville. it is busy on this wednesday. a lot of people heading back to work and temperatures, as you head out the door, low to mid-60s. we have upper 60s for the south bay. 67 degrees in livermore and 63 in oakland. the seven day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. we won't see many huge changes over the next couple days. it will be warmer this weekend. up to 84 degrees in gilroy today and 86 degrees in east san jose.

the east bay up to 90 in danville. we will have upper 70s and lower 80s for the peninsula. san francisco up to 73. north bay looking at a high of 83 degrees today in sonoma. as you get the kids out the door, we will have fog in spots along the coast with mainly clear skies inland. it will be a nice day outside at recess as we see the skies clearing, comfortably warm and sunny. if you are going golfing, it is going to be a great one, especially early in the morning. by noon, it starts to feel warm, but not too bad. we are in the upper 80s here in the trivalley. the chance of rain tomorrow. we'll start to see the showers there along the coastline for today. this afternoon, there may be spotty sprinkles. inland will be mostly clear. tomorrow, looking at rain here and there. it won't be a heavy rain producer. anywhere we see the showers moving through, it will be very light in terms of being

measured. we are looking at the showers in the forecast with the quick moving disturbance and after that, drys out. we'll see more of the same for the inland areas. mike is tracking hayward for activity. >> we are looking at the bay. we have a good shot of the speed. it's looking good. in hayward, we heard of a crash from chp. over here is northbound 880. it looks like all lanes from cleared. i got the alert even though it's hard to find on the map. we'll talk about that in a second. i did want to give a note for mass transit, no delays for the mass transit agencies. a better start than yesterday. let's go to the system now. this is the other wave, a crash reported here on the wave system by our friends here. this is gary w. gary reported that. marcus, this is how we do it. we say thank you. there you go.

humidity. today, it will be lower because we are looking at temperatures in the upper 80s. warm air for the trivalley as well as antioch and concord. palo alto, 82 with low 70s in half-moon bay. 70s in san francisco this afternoon. we'll have an update on hurricane irma and a look at the weekend forecast coming up as we check in with mike, tracking the changes for the east bay. >> that's where we see the focus early in the morning to the peninsula. we have the activity over here in san jose. kris sanchez follows the crime scene by story road. we'll get to that in a minute. an easy drive right now. the live shot shows the metering lights were turned on at 5:22. until two minutes ago, i saw only the fast track lanes. that is an indicator of the light commute we are watching here and the volume holding

steady. back to you. now, the breaking news in the south bay where a homicide investigation is under way. the scene is in the neighborhood near the i-680 and 101 interchange in san jose. >> kris sanchez is there talking to investigators this morning. we have been able to find out since the last report, we checked in with you at 4:30. >> reporter: we were able to move closer to where the shooting may have happened or the person may have died. they are scrubbing the scene to reopen it to the neighborhood. our sources tell us, at this point, it appears it was a drive-by shooting that happened eight hours ago. the first officers were called to the scene when 911 lines lit up with calls of the shooting. officers found an adult man shot and suspect nowhere to be seen. the victim died at the hospital. we saw the coroners van out here within the last few hours. this investigation will only disrupt neighborhood traffic here on sunset avenue where i'm

standing. the detour was clear in the last half hour. i did let mike inouye know about that and we were monitoring that this morning. police are not giving a description of the suspect or suspect vehicle. we don't know if it's because they know who they are looking for or there is no suspect description. we are pressing police to find out whether there is a greater public risk because this gunman is still on the run. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you for that update. other breaking news story this morning, hurricane irma continues to gain strength this morning as it barrels through the caribbean. look at the size of this storm. overnight, one of the most powerful atlantic hurricanes ever recorded made its first land fall. we are getting pictures now from st. croix as the hurricane is moving through that region there. also, new video out of northern caribbean islands as a massive storm plowed into the region.

the waves were crashing along the shore. national weather service says the eye of the hurricane passed over barbuda. howling winds struck the island of antigua. right now, there are reports of damage to the buildings and radio and phone communications are said to be down. in the meantime, florida is preparing for the worst. right now, people are scrambling to stock up on supplies. lines for gas this morning are going around the block as people are building the sandbags they need and putting up boards. florida keys, people there are being told to just evacuate, get out as soon as possible. dozens of our own local first responders on the way to florida to help with hurricane irma. eight red cross vehicles left the area. it's a trick eye time for the red cross with hurricane harvey using so many resources.

they have to be careful to keep staff and equipment here at home in case more wildfires break out. the stubborn brush fire still burning. firefighters continue to make progress on those flames. it's 45% contained, 100 acres burned since saturday night. thankfully no one has been hurt. no homes damaged so far. the city of freemont forced the former mayor to resign. jeff wheeler has taken down the controversial post, the one calls democrat slave masters and another transgender people, mentally ill. he resigned last week. the city of piedmont is under new leadership. he was e lekted mayor during a meeting last night. ak 34. faa says the raiders new stadium in las vegas won't be a hazard to aircraft. it paves the way for officials in nevada to approve

construction permits. faa was concerned the stadium's proposed 225 height would cause a problem for planes. the move is allowing the $2 billion project to stay on schedule. they could start construction by december and expect complexion by 2020. here at home, we investigated faa concerns at levi stadium. pilots on a commercial jet said they confused the football stadium to lights directing them to the san jose airport. head to our website, www.nbcbayarea.com and click on the investigations tab. ak 35. happening today, new transit facility opens in the north bay on redwood boulevard. it's a work to make the bus stop safer and more efficient. city and county leaders are going to celebrate this morning at 10:00. also happening today, a community meeting to get input

on a study aimed to ease congestion. a transbay bridge and train possibly using old train tressels. they are getting public feedback on the recommendations. the meeting is at 8:00 at palo alto city hall. >> if you have ever driven over the dumbarton, there is a train tressel there. you can't take a train across. we are following those developments now. an easy drive around the bay. no problem for the speed sensors. over there, you saw the altamont pass. there may be a disabled vehicle partially blocking the slow lanes. slowing off i-80. a live look out here as well. the san mateo bridge. a good amount of traffic to the peninsula, no problems. we are looking at a gradual build to the commute.

a lot of company for you. >> there you go. you are among friends. >> with that nice commute, people can think about the weekend. >> yeah. >> we turn to kari for the weekend weather. >> a nice weekend, warmer temperatures than what we are going to feel today. not bad, but lower 80s for the bay. inland 88 and the coast 73 degrees. on sunday, more of the same. a little warmer for the inland spots, up to 91 degrees. for the bay, 84 degrees. coast at 71. looks like another nice weekend for heading to the beaches. as we check out the forecast for napa valley, heating up several degrees by sunday. friday is the best day to go out there and do the tours at the vineyards. if you are heading to l.a., mid to upper 70s there. mostly sunny skies and for lake tahoe, we see those temperatures up to 71 degrees on friday. more of the same on saturday. then up to 74 degrees on sunday.

islands. this morning seeing rain and wind from the massive system. we are getting our first system from inside the eyewall where the storm made land fall in st. martin. battered boats and flooded streets. look at that. cars submerged. look at that. a look at the hotel from st. martin as well, where they are trying to go through and assess the damage. communication and images from the island were cut off from the world because of the storm's strength. because the island is in the eye of the storm, people are actually experiencing a quick break. hurricane force winds will begin once again after that eye has passed. >> 5:42. new video showing the terrifying moments off a boat in central missouri. the back of the left side of the boat, you can see the woman and dog thrown into the air. this happened last week.

fortunately, everyone is expected to be okay. it was extinguished shortly after the explosion. there's no word on why it happened. richmond police are reminding people to be careful meeting people online. a robbery suspect is now behind bars. the victim came to the neighborhood to give an estimate for a job. the man he was meeting then robbed him at gunpoint. the suspect tried to shoot the victim, but the weapon jammed. these are the pictures of the gun. the suspect fled, but police eventually caught him. happening today, critical hearing in the kate stinely murder case. the man who used the gun will testify. the judge presiding over the case made several important rulings. among them, the judge decided what questions lawyers can and cannot ask. she was shot on san francisco's pier 14 two years ago. the man is accused of killing

her with the agents gun. the city of santa rosa needs $1 million to up grate body cameras. it is reporting the cameras the city paid half a million for two years ago are already obsolete. tuesday, police officials told the city counsel the storage system is slow and inefficient. they want to buy new cameras from a different company and subscribe to a cloud based storage system. we checked online to see if they prefer one storage over another. they don't. it should be up to each agency to select a particular storage method. news on the escalating tensions in north korea. vladimir putin called for talks with the regime. this, he says are not the solution. putin made the remarks during a meting with south korea's

president today. it's after north korea detonated a hydrogen bomb. south korea expects another test soon. if the missile is fired south toward u.s. territory of guam, the u.s. might shoot it down. happening today, the top democrats in congress are set to call for action to protect daca recipients. at 7:00 our time, nancy pelosi and chuck schumer will call on their colleagues to take up and pass the d.r.e.a.m. act. they won a floor vote on the bill protecting the immigrants brought to the country as immigrants. they have blasted the trump decision to get rid of the program known as daca. >> all of washington is trying to figure out what president trump meant with a mid afternoon tweet. scott mcgrew is walking back on the daca deadline. >> for a while, it was the most

often retweeted and commented tweet tuesday afternoon. look for yourself. congress has six months to legalize daca, something the obama administration was unable to do. if they can't, i will revisit the issue. i will revisit this issue. the white house was very clear, it wants to end daca. if someone wants to save it, it has to be congress. that was tuesday morning. by afternoon, here comes this second option, a hint the white house might change its mind if congress does nothing. that's not the only hint we got that the president is considering other options. in a tuesday morning press conference, sarah huckabee sanders said three times in three ways, there are options if congress doesn't take action. >> it's their job. if they can't do it, they need to get out of the way and let somebody take on a heavy lift and get things accomplished. >> what did she mean?

is up at the bottom of the screen showing san francisco over the next several days. a little warmer as we head into the weekend. as you are getting started this morning, about to get ready for the day, it is going to be cooler to start. might need a light jacket. other than that, you will need a summer dress or something to keep you cooler later on today with the temperatures warming up. sunglasses, also sandals will be a nice choice for today as well. we will see a lot more sunshine. once the fog clears in san francisco, you will see more sunshine, too. in santa cruz, it is comfortable. not all-out sunshine, more clouds in the mix as we go into the afternoon with a breezy blend. here are clouds hugging the coast and showers just offshore and maybe far enough to make it to some of the area beaches with mist and drizzle. for tomorrow, we'll have a better chance of seeing some of that light rainmaking it into the inland area, especially early tomorrow morning and as well throughout the noon hour.

taking a live look at our san francisco camera this morning. expect a foggy, morning commute across the coast. a pleasant day ahead across the bay area. nice to see the marine layer return for cooler temperatures. 5:55 right now. details to share on the damaged sfilway at the orrville dam. new report of what caused that spillway to fail. 200,000 people were evacuated when the primary spillway gave way. a report blames the state saying the dam was not designed well and poorly built. people below the dam have more questions than concern. >> i can't sleep at night. i don't know if they know this that we are going to be secure. >> i can't seem surprised. i wish there was a quick fix,

but i doubt there is. >> the report says there needs to be a comprehensive review for the dam project. the department of water resources is responding saying public safety is the state's priority and they will apply lessons learned here. they are trying to rebuild the spillway before a november 1st deadline. 5:56. more people are riding caltrain. they released their report this week. they said more than 65,000 people ride cal train between san jose and san francisco. the 2010 ridership increased 73%. caltrain says that's reducing traffic and greenhouse gases in the bay area. an invasive species of fruit flies was found putting the industry at risk. it was found in a fly trap late last week. the invasive species probably came from hawaii. the county responded by putting

out 1100 traps to capture any other flies. the agricultural commissioner says the fly can infest 250 types of fruits and vegetables. >> the flies lay eggs on the skin or below the skin of the fruit. the eggs hatch into maggots. not only is there a maggot in it, but it causes the fruit to decompose and get mushy and unpalettable. >> early to talk about maggots. we did some digging and found this isn't the first time it's happened in the area. farmers in dixon lost $1 million of produce when there was an infestation a decade ago. one of the fruit flies was found in vacaville. we have to control that. 5:57. a coach accused of sending inappropriate texts to swimmers is due in court for a hearing. he was an assistant coach at the

quick silver swimming club in san jose. police say he had a texting relationship with the teenage swimmers at the club more than a year. police arrested him after two boys and three girls accused him of inappropriate behavior. police in southern california hope this newly released surveillance video will help find a man who vandalized a convenience store after they wouldn't sell him beer. it happened around 2:30 in the morning at a 7-eleven in santa ana. the man was mad that he wasn't able to buy the beer even though they are not allowed to sell after 2:00 a.m. he missed it by 31 minutes. he smashed the store's front window before taking off. ak a boy will enjoy a part of his childhood he's been missing, a playground. he's been battling leukemia since last november. all he wanted to do is play
