wednesday morning. we appreciate you joining us. >> we are going to start with this breaking news on hurricane irma. this is the feiercest storm eve recorded in the atlantic ocean, words like devastating and catastrophic describe the storm. >> 185 mile-an-hour winds and heavy rain. florida is now almost certain to feel its fury over the weekend. >> a mandatory evacuation is under way for tourists and residents in the keys this morning and officials in miami are preparing for what would be the first major evacuations in that city in 12 years. >> in anticipation of this storm, 100 members of the florida national guard are being activated, 7,000 more have been told to report for duty in the coming days. we have correspondents at the

ready and in puerto rico. al, take it away. >> thanks are changing with every model run. you can see how huge this system is. the winds across about 400 miles in diameter. right now we've got currently the warnings for sait. maarten, aa antiqua. 185 mile-an-hour winds, moving west northwest at 16 miles per hour. here's the track as we see it and the effects. what we're expecting as it makes its way towards puerto rico tonight, the winds 50 to 75 miles per hour, along the coast, 3 to 5 foot storm surge, rainfall of up to 10 inches or more. it continues towards the turks and caicos. 150 to 175 mile-an-hour winds,

15 to 20 feet storm surge, upwards of 16 inches of rain. it could be devastating there. for the bahamas, up to 150 mile-an-hour winds, 16 inches of rain or more, it stays to the north of cuba. it shouldn't be a problem for them but florida, the storm track, the timing, the impact still a little uncertain. what we do know about the storm surge, this is what we're going to be looking at. these areas going to be really impacted very heavily from the bahamas, all the way to anguila. look at the size and scope of this storm system. 420 miles in diameter. the tropical force winds extend out 300 miles. along the florida peninsula, it's only 140 miles across and so theoretically, we could be looking at a coast-to-coast threat. irma is long enough to impact the gulf coast and atlantic side

so we would have damaging winds and storm surge at the same time. right now the ensemble model bringing everything pretty much in agreement north of cuba. then it starts to make that turn sunday morning and as it does, what we've seen is a change in the last 24 hours, many more of the models now, the model runs either take it out of the gulf across florida or into the eastern side of florida and up into the southeastern lant atlantic. we're seeing a change that it's moving and shifting a little further to the east each time so more of the east coast really has to be on the ready for this and that's why we have to keep people posted. >> as you say, it's an hour-by-hour. >> we have another update coming in from the national hurricane center at 8:00. >> thank you. florida's governor is warning residents to prepare now. people are listening, beginning to board up their homes and businesses and stock up on supplies.

let's get to gabe gutierrez. evacuations already under way at the florida keys. >> the florida keys are closing schools and evacuating tourists. there's a bit of a lull but we're seeing more traffic than usual. to our north, officials in miami dade county said we could expect evacuations to start today. all this as irma barrels towards the u.s. >> hurricane irma blasting through the caribbean, making its first landfall. and all of florida is under a statement of emergency as the category 5 behemoth race towards the u.s. nasa images and they so this is serious. >> get prepared now. >> stock up on emergency supplies. >> it's the most powerful atlantic storm on record.

the frantic march to get away has started. >> how worried are you about the storm? zeks tre extremely worried. on a scale of 1 to 10, i'm at a 13. >> there's no water. >> there's a rush on gas, plywood brought in by the truckload. >> we can't take no chances. >> hurricane hunters help map every move like hugo, floyd and ivan, formed off the west coast of africa, they're typically among the most intense. the national hurricane center calls irma potentially cat traffi -- catastrophic. >> many florida residents say this is stirring up fears of hurricane andrew. authorities say there is still time to get supplies, many storms are stocking up.

the florida national guard, 7,000 members of the national guard are on alert. matt and savannah, back to you. >> all right, gabe, thank you very. >> as al mentioned, irma is expected to begin lashing puerto rico a little built later today. morgan, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. you can see here the wind and the rain is starting to pick up. this is as hurricane irma is headed our way. just overnight president trump decided to declare a federal state of emergency. during these final hours as we're waiting for the worst of the storm to come we've seen three things, one, lines wrapped around the insoide of groceries stores as people are scrambling to get the lastment nonper nonperishabl nonperishables. we've seen shelters with backup

morning to you. the president is facing criticism for his decision that will affect 800,000 immigrants. hardliners on the far right said he didn't go far enough. in an overnight tweet the president may have reflected his own confusion, indicating he may revisit this issue. this morning the backlash is building over president trump's immigration decision with protests from coast to coast. after mr. trump's announcement ending an immigration policy referred to as daca, the obama era program protected nearly 800,000 dreamers, young, undocumented immigrants, brought here illegally as children. mr. trump tweeting late tuesday, if they can't, i will revisit the issue, earlier in the day defending his move.

>> how does your daca decision affect you? >> i have a great love for them. >> underscoring the controversy, the president dispatched his attorney general, jeff sessions, to deliver the news. >> the compassionate thing to do is end the lawlessness, enforce our laws. >> what does it mean for current dreamers? their legal status will, pier on a rolling basis. no new applications will be processed. once their protections end d.r.e.a.m.ers can be deported like any other undocumented immigrants. they urge d.r.e.a.m.ers to prepare for and arrange their departure from the united states. many d.r.e.a.m.ers are speaking out. >> you're talking about children that were brought here without their own consent when they were 1 or 2 years old. you know, this is all we know. >> reporter: former president

do is to end it. overnight president trump tweeted and said congress must legalize daca or if not, he'll revisit the issue. is that a mixed message? >> the compassionate thing to do is to give these kids legal status, let them becomes citizens, they're all nonfelons, they came here as young children, they've lived their life in america and they would add great value to our country. that's the right thing to do regarding the kids. in terms of the law, ten attorney generals filed a lawsuit today suggesting that daca was unconstitutional. they were going to win in court. the legalization of their parents was stuck down by the federal court. so what prompted this was actions by ten republican attorney generals to challenge the constitutionality of the daca. i think the president made the right decision giving us six months. >> but attorneys sections said

we've got to enforce the laws, he said d.r.e.a.m.ers are taking jobs from americans. the president seems to be saying legalize it. >> well, jeff sessions is wrong. these kids are not taking jobs from american citizens. they're part of our country. they're fully employed for the most part. they're in school. they will add great value. the president is right to want to have a heart for these kids. >> you said the president's got to roll up his sleeves and get involved, get on the phone and create consensus but, senator, in the six months in office, as he ran on this idea that he was a deal maker, have you seen him employ that skill set on any issue since he's been in office? >> the health care bill in the house. so here's what i think he needs to do. we need -- marco rubio is right, we need to define what an acceptable d.r.e.a.m act would look like. 70% of americans want to allow these kids to have a second

start on life and live in our country. there's a drirchs between tiffee d.r.e.a.m act and border security. >> can i jump in? when you say border security, there's an idea this could get passed if congress provides funding for the botherrder wall. first of all, mexico is supposed to pay for the wall. >> i don't think mexico is going to pay for the wall and nobody wants to build a wall. the department of homeland security is an expert. i would like to see the president come up with a border security plan that makes sense because a lot of republicans say if you legalize these kids, no matter how emotional the situation is, you're incentivizing others to come to america illegally saying if you get our kids there, maybe we'll become citizens. >> are you saying there's a

possibility of a congressional fix for daca without funding for the wall that president trump wants to build? >> i think there's a congressional deal to be made for border security that would not include a 2,200 mile wall and the d.r.e.a.m act because nobody -- i've been to the border. nobody believes a 2,200 mile wall is the way to secure a border. >> well, the president does. >> well, i tell you what, the president in my view can come up with a very robust plan. i would go to a guy like general kelly who used to be in charge of the southern command. he can tell us how to secure the border. >> let me ask you about north korea before i let you go. you were on our program back in august. you said a military option is, quote, inevitable unless north korea changes. since you said those word on our air, they tested two more ballistic missile, two over japanese territory and just last

"today" correspondent craig melvin is here to explain.

this is only going to heat up the rivalry. >> indeed. as you know, the red sox and yankees have one of the most storied rivalries in all of sports. and it's heating up with boston now under investigation by the league for allegedly using the apple watch to help steal signs from their long-time enemy. for nearly a century, the rivalry between the boston red sox and new york yankees has been legendary. but now, the feud is entering the digital age, with the yankees accusing the sox of using an apple watch to help steal and relay their catcher's hand signals. according to "the new york times," the plot came to light after a three-game series last month. the yankees with video evidence they claim, showing a red sox staff member looking at his apple watch in the dugout and giving the signals to players,

probablileting them know what pitch is coming. the red sox admitted they learned the signals from video replay personnel and gave that information to some of their players. >> teams have stolen signs for decades in baseball. it's an age-old thing. what's difference here is the red sox were using an electronic device to do it. what is against the rules is using anything other than your eyes to steal signs. >> reporter: late tuesday, yankees manager, joe girardi, spoke out. >> electronics makes things easier, more dangerous. every team is trying to get an advantage. >> reporter: the red sox are cooperating with the investigation. but boston's president of baseball operations, defending sign-stealing in general. >> do i think sign-sa stealing wrong? no. i don't. >> reporter: and now, the team is firing back, accusing yankees of using cameras in their television network to steal

category 1, 75-90 mirm. cat 2, 96-110. cat 3, 1111-129. cat 4, 130-156. it increases exponentially. you start off by a category 1. but by the time you get to a category 5 storm, it is 500 more times powerful than a cat 1. the power of the storm starts to multiply as you go up. cat 2 is ten-times. 50-times with a category 3. and a category 5 storm, you combine the wave action and the wind action, it is 500-times more powerful good wednesday morning, i'm

this very busy news morning. hurricane irma began tearing through the caribbean overnight. gabe gutierrez is in the keys are people are preparing or getting out. >> reporter: they're closing schools and evacuating tourists later today and miami-dade county will be starting evacuation. florida's governor has already declared state of emergency for all of the state's counties. it made its first landfall overnight on the caribbean island of barbuda and expected to barrel towards puerto rico, in the next couple of days before heading to the u.s. mainland. here in florida we've already seen a run on supplies, gas, bottled water. authorities say stores are trying to restock so people can still get their supplies, if they hurry. but they're urging people if they're in a mandatory

evacuation zone to get out. but this is bigger than the last hurricane 5 storm to slam into florida 25 years ago last month, hurricane andrew. >> and we will get back in just a little while. we have new reaction to president trump's decision to end the so-called daca program that protects many young undocumented immigrants from deportation. hallie jackson joins us from washington. good morning. >> reporter: hi. good morning. this morning, president trump is taking heat from all sides from his decision to cancel that program to protect people brought to the country as kids. his critics say the decision was cruel and even some of his supporters say the president did not go far enough. overnight, president trump seems to be opening a window to maybe change his mind. he tweeted out congress now has six months to legalize daca, something the on administration was unable to do.

slowing because that is a problem for the morning commute, especially in hayward where northbound 880 at whipple, there is a crash blocking one lane. traveling north through hayward. the southbound side also connecting the san mateo and dumbarton bridge is slowed. getting toward the bay bridge, there's a slower drive. 50 minutes from highway 4. 880 really jammed up coming into downtown oakland. there was a disabled vehicle at 5th that finally cleared. the south bay very slow. here's 101 from 805 to 85. back to you. i'll have another local news update for you in a half hour.

delivery room. the idea of weather and its extremes is something i've been interested in. >> i watch you, al, covering all of the storms over the decades. and i hope that some of the information the book serves as a bit of a lesson and a cautionary tale. how many times have you been out during a hurricane and you see some knucklehead, on the beach swimming or surfing. and you want to say don't you listen? >> we go out. we take extreme caution to make sure -- if we feel threatened, we get out of the situation. sometimes we get caught in it. like we did in hurricane wilma. that's the worst thing i've ever been in. and i had a camera guy trying to hold on to me. we were in naples, florida, in 2005. and went down. we could have gotten hurt. after that, we stopped broadcasting outside. it was so dangerous. >> what do you want children to get out of this book? >> we want them to respect weather. not be afraid of it. but to realize that science teachers tell us all the time,

this is the most important and one of the most interesting topics kids request. we want them to feel they can access it. >> let's go through certain areas. a tropical cyclone. what has to happen before it gets categorized as much. >> 74 miles per hour. once it gets above that, it becomes a hurricane. that was a good idea at the time. >> are you serious? nobody told me about that. >> they get named -- once a system gets out over the warm waters, the atlantic or the pacific, 80-degree water temperatures, you start to get the systems forming. you get the winds blowing and the counterclockwise situation. and you get a typhoon or a hurricane. >> is my hair getting frizzy?

what about a dust storm? >> most people think of these as something that happens in the desert. i hope we don't have sand. we've been seeing them more and more in parts of the continental united states, especially the southwest. arizona gets three dust storms or haboobs. it's when you get the downdraft from the thunderstorm, it kicks up all of the dust on the ground. and you wednesdend up with the . >> haboobs, what we call the people that come up with these effects. >> now, now. >> how about a winter storm? >> in the winter, it can be a nor'easter or a lake-effect snow. it will eventually drop down. we were going to have analog snow. >> we don't do this for every author, by the way. in is special treatment. >> we appreciate that. the thing we want kids to really know is that science is their friend. weather is something they need

and i'm an arborist with i'pg&e in the sierras. the drought in california has killed trees on a massive scale. any of those trees that fail into power lines could cause a wildfire or a power outage. public safety is the main goal of our program. that's why we're out removing these hundreds of thousands of hazard trees. having tools and technology gives us a huge edge to identify hazard trees. my hope is that the work we're performing allows that these forests can be sustained and enjoyed by the community in the future. together, we're building a better california.

they think this is a vacation. it's hard to explain to them this is something -- >> i think kids help parents get through something like this. they need to be strong for their kids. and they're going to make sure they're smiling and happy and the kids are having a good time. as a family, it helps people get through it. >> i think it's true and adds an extra pressure. when you're thinking only about yourself. you both know as parents, everything is elevated. your love is so strong for the kids. when you see them scared, your heart breaks in a thousands pieces. >> jeff rossen is going around the country collecting stuff for families in need. they were in a florida school today. you were saying, the thing about, you don't think about the schools. >> yeah. >> are going to be out for a indefinite period of time. >> i was in a school that was flooded with houston's superintendent, who is a great guy. he has a huge job ahead of him. a lot of the schools have been flooded.

good wednesday morning, i'm kari hall, we had the return of the marine layer this morning and that means more clouds and fog on the coastline. san francisco up to 73 degrees. san jose expect a high of 85 degrees. still warm temperatures inland but the humidity will be slightly lower and it will not be as uncomfortable yesterday. north bay expect high temperatures in the low to mid 80s. there will be a chance for showers in the forecast especially late tonight and early in the morning with temperatures in san francisco up to 69 degrees. cooler on friday and it will start to warm up for the end of the weekend and the start of next week. we'll see that same trend for the inland areas. not expecting heavy downpours but it will be cooler, breezy, and at times spotty showers. it will be a much warmer weekend
