ad lib: calm before the storm in miami change pix -but irma is on the way at 4:30 on your friday morning, the calm before the storm in miami. a live look at what looks like a start to the beautiful day there, but we all know that hurricane irma is on its way. take another look at this satellite picture as well. you see the storm that has been growing in nature forcing thousands, hundreds of thousands, to flee their area. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm marcus washington on this friday morning. certainly a lot of people are thinking what's going on with irma but certainly here a different story. >> it's going to be a beautiful day in the bay area looking at comfortable temperatures, and we do start out with some fog this morning but that will clear out

with a very nice, comfortable day. we can see it is a large storm but it is now a category 4 hurricane with wind speeds of 155 miles an hour. it is still moving fairly quickly to the west/northwest at 16 miles an hour and is just now north of cuba. if this moves a little bit closer to cuba that could change what miami could expect. the possibility of a slightly weaker hurricane but it's still going to be very powerful and more on this and the track coming up in a few minutes as we head over to mike now, an update on the bay bridge. you talked about the fog. for the cars as well, let me show you on the map getting into san francisco.

a disabled vehicle limping its way off the bridge. just before you get to the tunnel, there's a work zone heading westbound. the rest of the bay moves well. there's a crash here on highway 9. it's in a remote area. we're tracking that on the chp report. back to you, marcus. at 4:32 before we get to new developments on irma start with breaking news out of mexico. overnight a massive earthquake has turned deadly. it struck late last night off mexico's southern coast toppling homes and leading to tsunami waves and evacuations. the usgs is measuring this as an 8.1 quake. officials say at least six people have died including multiple children. several aftershocks as well. the epicenter is 600 miles

southwest of mexico city. buildings in the capital swaying as well. we have been getting images in to our newsroom overnight including one showing a crack in the streets of mexico city. mexico's president says this is the strongest earthquake to hit the country in a century. and within the past couple of and now the latest on that monster hurricane irma and within the last couple of hours forecasters lowered the storm to a category 4. irma still will have devastation on the u.s. mainland as florida is expected to take the direct hit. laura? >> that's right. we are bracing for it and what is going on there. nbc news has confirmed so far 12 deaths from the storm. six are in the u.s. territories of puerto rico and the virgin islands.

overnight irma battered turks and caicos. as for florida, the storm is set to impact the region tomorrow. people are rushing for food and fuel. many stations are running out of fuel there. i-95 and 75 are stop and go from south florida all the way up to the florida/georgia line. families are trying to buy construction materials to protect homes. the time to board up and get out is running out. >> catching last-minute flights out of south florida airports. airlines have brought in more planes but that likely won't be enough. nbc's bob redell is live this morning where overnight our team caught up with some people, some of the passengers lucky enough to escape just in the nick of time. bob? >> reporter: very lucky, marcus, considering dozens upon dozens

of flights canceled out of south florida. passengers arrived from miami around 2:00 this morning. i bring that up because that is several hours later. that's how delayed the flight was. they describe a chaotic scene where there are many people trying to escape hurricane irma. one woman we spoke with evacuated here to san francisco to stay with her son and wife who live in this area. she lives, this woman, through hurricane andrew in 1992. she seltells us she is afraid o what hurricane irma will do back in miami. >> i'm worried about flooding because i live on the canal, and i am in a flood zone. i moved as many things as i could up to the second floor. i'll see when i return home what i have to deal with. i'm most worried about roof damage, too. once the water gets inside the

house it's a mess. >> reporter: one passenger, a man who evacuated here to the bay area who was on the flight overnight, was talking about the airline flight crisis. he checked earlier this week. $400 on one airline. that same flight, same airline later in the week, $1,000. price gouging. another passenger we spoke with said he was trying to get a flight to anywhere in the united states because he has friends all over the place and picked the bay area because that was the flight he could get. reporting live here at sfo, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> i'm sure we'll hear similar stories like that all weekend. coverage continues at 5:00 a.m. with two live reports, sarah rosario will join us and our rick boone is in mountain view as crews prepare to head to florida. happening today in the east bay another urban shield training will be met with protests. urban shield is the federally funded police program that focuses on first responder training. however, critics say it

militarizes the police. coming up in the next hour "today in the bay's" kris sanchez will update us on the future of that training program. happening today in san jose, today's hearing to decide whether or not to put the cases of all five suspects together or to separate them. you may recall mis flo was brutally beaten to death during a home robbery. the 88-year-old was a pillar of her east san jose community. two men including her 19-year-old neighbor are facing murder charges. the other three suspects were arrested in connection with the crime. 4:37. happening today former president bill clinton will be in san francisco. he's giving a keynote address for a private ceremony honoring a bay area civil rights activist. amos brown has spent 40 years at third baptist church of san francisco even working with dr. martin luth martin loout er kiuther king jr. it's 4:37. coming up, a massive data

have exposed information from 143 million americans. the breach occurred between may and july and hackers stole names, security numbers, birth dates, addresses, and drivers license numbers. that is enough information for thieves to hijack a person's identity. equifax discovered the breach on july 29th but did not announce it publicly until just yesterday. it has put up a website and phone number where consumers can check their security status. a quick check of your markets on wall street. they could end in the red. the markets fell but the dow led lower by financial stocks and after disney issued a profit warning. investors will go debt at that on wholesale trade and credit. the dow fell to 22,784. the nasdaq edged up higher by four to 6393. and a new report by the pew research center finds more than half of mernts aged 50 and older get their names from social media sites up from 45% last

i have a move every now and then. it was fun. beautiful. >> we're going to have that weather today. as you head out tonight we are going to keep some more of that beautiful weather. now we've also been keeping you updated on what's happening with hurricane irma. one quick update, landfall is expected to happen early sunday morning with wind speeds of about 150 miles an hour, so that would place it as a category 4 as it moves into key west to miami and we are expecting a storm surge of at least 10 feet. rainfall totals may be up to 20 inches. a lot of flooding and the hurricane expands about 75 miles out from the center of that storm, so that's something you'll be hearing more about. also right behind that hurricane, jose with wind speeds of 125 miles an hour heading to some of those same islands that were just affected by hurricane irma and this will be curving more to the north so it will not take the exact same path and

moving more over the open water. we'll have to watch it over st. martin and antigua over the next couple of days. we have hurricane katja which was barely moving yesterday and is still removing stationary but as it sits over the gulf of mexico allows it to strengthen some. this may become a category 2 before it makes landfall on the eastern edge of mexico just north of vera cruz. a lot to watch out for. now our temperatures will be starting out in the lower 60s this morning as you get ready to head out. our high temperatures today will be very nice, reaching into the low to mid-80s inland, and the coast into the mid-60s. as you're getting started this morning looking out the window you see all of those clouds, drizzling right now in san francisco. a good day for a hat and some long sleeves. very nice later on today. san francisco looking at highs up to 67 degrees today and a chance of showers for next

tuesday and wednesday. in the meantime a brief warm-up especially for the valleys up to 97 on sunday. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. mike is tracking the crash in oakland. >> the nimitz freeway moving well right now. i don't often get to say that. clearing down by sugarloaf in the southbound direction away from here and to santa cruz. in oakland we see the slowing develop over the last five minutes. northbound 880 approaching the broadway exit. we have reports maybe one lane blocked by the crash. i'm hoping they can move it quickly to the right shoulder. that would be the easiest for access and the least distraction. we'll track that. getting over to the bay bridge, those travel times through the maze not reporting any problems and we don't see any issues although there's fog around areas. look at the golden gate bridge. we do have an issue for visibility. a live look out here -- you can't see coming across the bridge crew. we're watching for the zipper truck.

no problem. back to you. >> let's hope it stays clear out there. thank you, mike. 4:48. happening today former san francisco school board president keith jackson heads back to court. he's accused of laundering mayor ed lee's campaign money and bribes for former state senator leyland ye who is serving a five-year sentence and mayor lee has denied any involvement. we're still waiting to hear what exactly today's hearing is about. 4:49. more deaths are confirmed following a bay area heat wave this past weekend. the san mateo county coroner says people in pacifica and mill vertebrae died of heat stroke. all of the victims had two things in common -- they were elderly and were not in air-conditioned homes. right now in the east bay authorities are searching for an alleged sexual predator. police say they think the man responsible for the attack that happened monday. yesterday they released a

sketch. a woman says the man groped her on a walking trail. police say the woman has seen the suspect before. >> she had seen the male there at approximately eight other times in the same area and each time that he contacted her, he would say, will you be my friend? will you be my friend? >> police say she did manage to get away and dial 911. she heard -- the attacker heard the voice and ran away. if you have information call union city police. the search continues for these two women, escaped inmates. authorities say irene michelle and anna armstrong on the left walked away from a minimum security facility. michelle was in livermore but that's the last time anyone has seen either of the women. these are newly released images of michelle. she has a tattoo on her neck and right wrist. both women were serving

about to take center one of the most destructive fires in california history is about to take center stage in court. a judge found pg&e responsible for that fire. now a jury will decide how much the company has to pay for damages. >> investigative reporter liz wagner has been looking into how that fire started and why critics fear a fire like this could happen again. >> reporter: in 2015 the butte fire burned 70,000 acres in the sierra foothills. the area still looks like this. this family lost everything they owned and nearly lost their
