5:00 am
preparation for hurricane irma. as the state braces for a direct hit from the monster storm. good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm marcus washington. a lot of people are thinking and talking about what's going on in florida and the caribbean. certainly here it is a different story. >> a very nice day but we're calling our friends and family that live elsewhere in the caribbean and florida and also in parts of the southeast that are bracing for hurricane irma but we are looking at some morning clouds and fog as you get ready to head out. we are heading up to 77 degrees. gilroy some lower 80s there. lower 80s in the east bay. palo alto up to 75 and san francisco a high of 67 today.
5:01 am
i'll have a complete update on hurricane irma coming up as we head to mike now. >> not a major concern for the rest of the world. i know you said you'll bring more updates on irma. here to the rest of the bay, a smooth drive. the nimitz freeway, we have one issue in oakland. one lane is still blocked. folks are slowing down as well as getting into downtown. toward the bay bridge other than that is not a major problem. traffic flows well. head through town. back to you. >> thank you, mike. >> just hours ago hurricane irma was down graded to a category 4.
5:02 am
irma is still expected to devastate florida which is directly in its path. nbc news has confirmed at least 12 deaths throughout the islands including six in u.s. territories. as that storm races towards florida we have team coverage. kari is tracking irma's path. >> and rick boone talking about bay area teams heading out to help. set the scene there for us. it looks beautiful right now. >> reporter: it's a beautiful day here in miami. not a cloud in the sky. we do know in 24 hours things will change dramatically as hurricane irma nears. this is the calm before the storm and local leaders are warning people get out now while you have the chance. already we've seen evacuations and airports are shutting down today. hurricane irma pounding the
5:03 am
turks and caicos, a preview of what the u.s. coast can expect. >> florida will have major hurricane impacts with deadly storm surge and life threatening winds. >> reporter: the race is on to get out of the storm's path. at miami international airport a flight out of town is hard to come by. >> i got a ticket for $700, i refreshed it and it was gone. >> reporter: all major airlines are suspending service tonight. many passengers can do little but hope and wait. >> we're at their mercy at the moment. >> reporter: leaving by car isn't much easier. lines for gas are long and traffic is snarled. >> horrible. like everybody else, we're escaping the hurricane. god knows if it's better up there. >> reporter: final preparations are being made. at president trump's mar-a-lago resort windows are covered with plywood. >> i have one case for us and i just want to have a little bit more.
5:04 am
>> reporter: the massive storm is taking aim at florida expected to make landfall saturday. and we've noticed the wind picking up a good amount within the last couple of minutes. now that the storm is downgraded it's good news. it will pack a powerful punch. local officials are warning people, especially those who live near the high rises like the ones behind me to get out though they are built to withstand hurricane force winds, irma is much bigger. officials are warning, again, get out now while you have the chance. reporting live, sarah rosario. marcus and laura, back to you. >> so many people have been warned. thank you so much, sarah. >> now we want to turn to meteorologist kari hall to give us an update on the storm's path. we will see fluctuations and you cannot take a false sense of security as wind speeds are still at 150 miles an hour. we are down from that 185 we saw
5:05 am
when the hurricane was at its most intense but we are still going to see it fluctuating over the next several days as it continues on its westward track. right now just north of cuba and moving into those islands of the bahamas. it is expected to continue off to the west/northwest as a category 4 hurricane, and that's the intensity it will be at as it makes landfall based on our current forecast track and it's going to make landfall early on sunday morning so a very short amount of time here for those florida residents to prepare and evacuate and get all of those supplies. it moves all the way up through florida, a very wide hurricane and may still be a tropical storm as it makes its way all the way inland to tennessee so this is going to be affecting a large amount of our population across the country. more updates coming up later. thanks so much, kari. before irma hits florida, more help from the bay area is on its
5:06 am
way. about to go out there and get a jump ahead of the storm. >> "today in the bay's" rick boone is live with more on this team's assignment. rick? >> reporter: yeah, good morning. activity is starting to pick up here early this morning and in just a few hours from now members from the california air national guard, this is from the 129th rescue wing, they will be deploying from this location right now, right here and heading to florida. on the ground 100 members of the highly trained search and rescue unit. they'll be needed. choppering in to flooded places with rescue helicopters to pull people out to safety. deployment comes days after the team returned from texas completing over 100 rescue efforts after hurricane harvey. so they're trained for this. they're just hoping that they may not be needing their skills as much but, unfortunately, they will be because people get
5:07 am
locked into the situations. we're live in mountain view. rick boone for "today in the bay." >> we sent a crew to south florida to bring us reports from florida when irma hits and before and after. our vianey arana is preparing reports right now. we'll go to her in about 15 minutes. and back to that breaking news that we've been following overnight from mexico. >> an earthquake being called the biggest to his that country in a century struck late last night off the southern coast toppling homes and leading to small tsunami waves. the usgs is measuring it as an 8.1 earthquake. it's already proven deadly. mexican officials say at least six people have died. now video and pictures keep coming in to our newsroom and we are posting updates at nbcbayarea.com as well. we'll, of course, bring you those new images that come in to us with another report coming up

at 5:30. and back here at home breaking news in the east bay. a woman is in the hospital this hour after she was pulled unconscious from her burning home in pleasant hills overnight. her husband got out safely but she fell behind as she called for help. that home is in the neighborhood near taylor and contra costa boulevard. firefighters say the couple heard loud bangs about 2:00 this morning and then saw the flames. the woman was found unconscious in a back room. she did not suffer any burns. we're waiting to hear what her condition is. a follow-up in the south bay on that brush fire that burned 100 acres, four teenagers have been arrested for allegedly starting the gilroy fire. those teens were playing with firecrackers sunday when the sparks spread to the dry brush near eagle ridge golf course. no homes or buildings were damaged. it took crews days to fully contain the fire. it is 5:08 right now and

5:12 am
getting out there it should be quick work. back to you. >> thank you. well, coming up, a bay area company faces a lawsuit. new this morning the false claims one person says annie's is making. >> equifax news is really bad. we'll tell you all about it.

a few clouds as we take a look outside in palo alto. it's a little bit busy as you get ready to head out the door early. our temperature trend will be very nice so windows down. we can turn off the air conditioning as our high temperatures there make it right to where we should be for this time of year. 76 degrees early this afternoon. an update on what to expect as we head into the weekend and what's happening in the tropics coming up. your travel times look great but you look at the golden gate bridge is not. there's fog there. just a note. nothing unusual about the time so far. >> sounds good, thanks, mike. >> drivers are killing more animals like deer. >> it's pretty dangerous. we went through that information overnight. the uc davis report finds the number of deadly crashes involving animals jumped up 20% last year. more than 6,000 deer were killed
5:16 am
with 400 coyotes, black bears and 43 mountain lions. the final tally was 7,400 animals found on the side of california roads. new this morning, a class action lawsuit has been filed against berkeley-based annie's home grown. two plaintiffs accuse the company of using false labeling by stating salad dressing natural. they say they use a synthetic ingredient instead of natural products. the plaintiffs want compensatory and punitive damages as well as new corrective ad campaigns. nothing short of a disaster for equifax saying it's the victim of a massive hack. >> who are the real victims here? scott mcgrew, social security numbers, drivers license numbers, addresses all stolen. all stolen, laura. that alone would be a catastrophe but honestly, guys,
5:17 am
it gets worse. let's start with the basics. equifax's data may have been exposed for 143 million people in america. that's one out of every three adults and that is just the start of the problem. equifax discovered the problem back in july but we're just learning about it now. many people report the operators on the phone will hang up on you. i'll tweet out a link to the website. here is my result. my information was, indeed, stolen. it then recommends i come back later this month to sign up for a service to protect my data. now if you have several family members who try the website one after the other you may run into problems because unless you refresh it a couple times the website seems to remember the results of the last person who used it. so i've started typing in random names like squidward from
5:18 am
spongebob square pants. social security number, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and says he was at risk. we're not done yet. it gets worse. three equifax executives sold stock in their company shortly after the company discovered the breach but before it told the public including two of company's top information officers. the people who deal with the data. let me wrap this up for you. one in three americans exposed, equifax has known about this since july, its executives may have committed insider training. they claim they didn't know. if you don't get protection right away and, marcus and laura, the website doesn't work. >> any good news at all? >> none that i can think of. it looks like uber isn't the only read share. lyft teaming up with a company that has a permit to test the new technology. no word yet, though, on when that will start.
5:19 am
>> right now beautiful. yesterday was a great day. today -- >> you know what makes it even better? it's friday. >> thank goodness. >> so as we start out this morning we see the clouds and the fog to start out but that may also affect your commute. that's the bad news. now the maps and show you the good news as traffic flows smoothly around the bay. that's great news. over here this crash actually turns out it might be a disabled vehicle eastbound between north flynn and livermore. westbound is your only slowing and we know about that. in the area that might be a
5:20 am
factor as you get closer to san francisco and across the golden gate bridge. you see those areas have no problem for speed sensors. there was no lane blocked at the metering lights but i'm still tracking the report that the bridge crew heads out of there. we'll show you waze as well. we have a smooth drive getting over to san francisco and to palo alto easy drive 101, 280, 380. your choice. make sure you choose waze as well. that's the waze animation. it tells you how to join our team, select your profile and select nbc bay area wazers. that's the team we'd like you to be a part of. i'm happy to be part of the team with our meteorologist kari hall. what do you have? >> i like the wiggle part. we're making the wiggle alphabet. we are going to have a beautiful day across the bay area and as we start out we are seeing some
5:21 am
partly cloudy skies in the inland areas at 64 degrees in the south bay. we're looking at the peninsula and it's 61 degrees there. i lost my south bay camera. the east bay looking live. 61 degrees. the seven-day forecast up at the bottom of the screen. we will have some warmer temperatures in the forecast. and we're heading into the low 80s in parts of the south bay today. right there in downtown 77 degrees. you cannot beat that this time of year. highs reaching into the mid-80s for the east bay. 72 in san mateo and 66 degrees on the embarcadero. the clouds and fog sticking around longer for this afternoon and in sonoma a high of 78 degrees. if you're head to go santa cruz, it will be perfect, highs up to 70 degrees and this weekend we have the jack of all trades market happening in oakland and that for tomorrow will have temperatures starting out in the mid-60s, rising to the mid-70s
5:22 am
with sunshine throughout the day. we'll check more events going on this weekend coming up in about 20 minutes. some clouds and fog through the morning and showers moving in once again early next week and for the inland yaz this will heat up. we've been keeping you up to date. expect it to make landfall as a category 4 hurricane moving into the florida keys of miami. there could be a storm surge of 10 feet plus with rain totals up to 20 inches and that hurricane field expanding out from the eye of the center of the hurricane could be at about 75 miles wide. we'll have more on that and an update now. here is the forecast for vianey arana. >> reporter: we got to target not too long. as you can tell the shelves are pretty much bare. we're two days ahead of the storm. talking to a family earlier they
5:23 am
were looking for canned foods, anything canned, nonperishable is pretty much gone. another thing we're having a tough time finding is any type of water, as soon as we checked into the hotel hurricane procedures directly from the manager and he told us he's letting them know safety procedures. they will be limited on resources. our next is to try to find some water. we'll keep you updated. follow me on my social media sites, bringing you the latest updates. >> you see the effects happening there. thank you. it is 5:23. lasting impact. the health problems starting to develop in kids who are at ground zero during 9/11. there )s new research out

5:26. concern is growing over the survival of western monarch butterflies. they're found along the california coast. "the chronicle" is reporting the butterfly population has declined dramatically since the 1980's and will lookly go extinct if something is not done. there are some 300,000 of the butterflies left from marin county in baja, california. in the '80s there were 10 million. coming up, we'll continue our coverage of hurricane irma. one of two natural disasters we're watching. we're also getting some new images out of mexico overnight where a major earthquake is wreaking havoc.

you're going to be hanging out in here. so if you need anything, text me. do you play? use the chase mobile app to send money in just a tap to friends at more banks than ever before.
5:30 am
you got next? chase. make more of what's yours. at 5:30 on friday morning a live look from florida where people are lined up. look at the cars coming in. people are coming out because they want to get sandbags. hurricane irma is approaching packing a powerful punch. this morning we are tracking that hurricane as the state braces for a direct hit. south florida will start feeling the effects as early as tonight. some of people have fled that area, in fact, just trying to get to drier, higher ground. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm marcus washington. of course meteorologist kari hall has been tracking irma. a look at what's going here in the bay today. >> you can see behind you a lot of fog in san francisco. another vantage point as we take a look at the golden gate
5:31 am
bridge. some drizzle throughout much of the morning as the marine layer moves back in. it will clear out quickly but we'll still have a very nice, cool day with breezy winds. all thanks to a very quick moving front that moves through yesterday. we're going to be up to 77 degrees in san jose. livermore 82. also 82 in morgan hills and half moon bay, 65 and 67 in san francisco. upper 70s and some low 80s for the north bay. 85 today in concord. i'll have a look at the forecast, the weekend forecast, in a few minutes. mike is tracking the pattern. >> fridays we often see the fastrak lanes. it was different. the cash lanes are backed up. that sometimes indicates a heavier volume of noncommuters, maybe a different shift in the traffic pattern. back to about a typical friday again. i'll track it closely and watch this shot. ering lights are on. the backup on our traffic sensors shows not a major
5:32 am
concern. a smooth drive. disabled vehicle making its way to the san francisco side should be cleared from lanes soon. keep that in mind as a short delay as folks might have to get around flashing lights and towards san francisco. your friday light commute. we're going to track this as we see the build and eastbound the good news the disabled vehicle looked like it from lanes. we'll send it to you, laura. at 5:32 the latest on hurricane irma. forecasters lowered the storm to a category 4 but it doesn't mean much because it is still expected to devastate florida. so far all the destruction has been in the caribbean. nbc news has confirmed at least 12 deaths because of the storm. six of the deaths are in the u.s. territories of puerto rico and the virgin islands. overnight irma battered the turks and caicos area. as for south florida people there may begin to feel the effects of irma as early as tonight. people are rushing to stock up on food and fuel.
5:33 am
look at the lines there. many stations, in fact, are running out of gas. the evacuation means roads are stop and go all along the state's highways. others buying boards to put on their windows and sandbags to protect homes. even at president trump's mar-a-lago resort all boarded up in preparation. at 6:33 right now thousands of people are hoping to catch last-minute flights out of south florida. airlines have brought in more planes to get people out but that likely won't be enough. nbc bay area's bob redell is live this morning where overnight our team caught up with some of those passengers lucky enough to escape just in the nick of time there, bob. >> reporter: good morning. we were speaking about this earlier, people are very lucky when you consider dozens upon dozens of flights canceled out of south florida. these passengers arrived here at sfo around 2:00 this morning. that flight directly from miami to sfo was delayed by about four and a half hours according to
5:34 am
some of the people on the plane we spoke with, delayed because of so many people trying to get out of the south florida area. one woman we spoke with evacuated here to stay with her son and his wife. she lived through hurricane andrew back in '92. she is afraid what hurricane irma will do to her home not far from miami. >> i'm worried about flooding because i live on a canal and i am in a flood zone. i moved as many things as i could up to the second floor. and i'll see when i return home just what i have to deal with. i'm most worried about roof damage, too. because once the water gets inside the house, it's a mess. i've been through this before and i know. >> one passenger described a very hectic scene at miami international where so many people, as i mentioned, are trying to escape the path of hurricane irma. another passenger said he was trying to get a flight to
5:35 am
anywhere in the united states and i think he meant it literally, i have friends all over the place. just so happens he got a flight here to san fran. in the bay area irma, unfortunately, looks like will be hitting florida while he's here. reporting live, bob redell, bay. >> bob, everyone just trying to get out. our coverage continues at 6:00 a.m. with two live reports. rosario will join us from miami and rick boone is in mountain view as crews prepare to head to florida. and breaking news out of mexico, overnight we learned that a massive earthquake has turned deadly. it struck late off mexico's southern coast toppling homes and leading to tsunami waves and evacuations. the usgs is measuring this as an 8.1 quake. overnight officials say at least six people have died including multiple children. there have been several aftershocks. this is 600 miles southwest of mexico city but the buildings in
5:36 am
the capital, you've been getting images overnight including one showing a crack in the streets of mexico. mexico president says this is the strongest earthquake to hit the country and at least 100 years. >> it will be interesting to see the devastation there. we know here in the bay area we, too, have to prepare for the earthquake. i want to check in with meteorologist kari hall right now talking about the all-important emergency kit. >> we know now is the time to prepare just in case something like that happens in the bay area. now if you make your earthquake kit you should have at least a gallon per person for at least two days three days, but ideal to have it for at least three weeks. and you also need nonperishable foods and a can opener. some other things to include in your earthquake kit, a whistle, a first aid kit, a flashlight and batteries. and also you need things like cash, medications, and also your
5:37 am
vital documents including your insurance papers or your social security card. also if you have any pets, make sure they have supplies, gloves, mask, and heavy duty classic bags, also a necessity and the full list is on the redcross.org website to get a few extra ideas of what you should do this weekend as we do have some nice weather in the bay area. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. it is 5:37. continuing on with the day's news happening today in san jose mis flo's murder case goes back to court. whether to put the cases of all five suspects together or separate them. mis flo was brutally beaten to death during a home robbery at her home last year. the 88-year-old was a pillar of her community. two men including mis flo's 19-year-old neighbor are facing murder charges. the three suspects were arrested
5:38 am
in with the crime. in the wake of recent political protests in berkeley and san francisco, the urban shield law enforcement training could take on dimension. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live with training today and the community response. kris, good morning. >> reporter: hi there, marcus and laura. as the weapons expo part of the urban shield training gets under way here, about 20 miles away protesters are going to gather saying that urban shield leads to the militarization of our local police department. now protesters say they militarize the police teaching officers to act more like soldiers in their communities but developers of urban shield say the goal is really to test the training and coordination among regional first responders. i pulled up some prior urban shield exercises just to give you some examples in 2013. they've simulated a passenger train crash to test the plan for mass fatalities. in 2014 it was a simulated
5:39 am
explosive terror attack to test how agencies deal with donations coming in. in 2015 coordinated terrorist attacks were meant to prepare for mass transportation and evacuation and last year an exercise tested the regional distribution of goods. this year the focus is on mass and shelter. i posted a poll in my twitter feed. tell me, do you want your loek law enforcement department to participate in exercises like urban shield in the name of emergency preparedness, or do you think that it leads local officers to act more like soldiers? coming up at 6:30 i'll show what you president trump did recently that could be fueling this conversation today. in dublin, kris sanchez, bay. always an interesting topic. to the roadways where this is not so interesting, which is exactly what you want. traffic flows very nicely, a little build in san jose. won't be there on the roadway.
5:40 am
traffic might be slower on 101 at 680. over here at 580 the dublin interchange moves really well. so does the castro valley y. a little slowing, a tiny bit of build for northbound 230. these are barely visible on our speed sensors. 15 minutes to the toll plaza, metering lights are on and we do have a good backup from basically the over crossing up to the metering lights and palo alto on the peninsula. we don't want to neglect that because look at the great, easy drive past the well-lit billboard and highway 101. >> the weekend looks pretty bright for us. >> it's here. >> yes, it is here, thank go goodness and it will be nice and warming up as we head to the end of the weekend. today will be the most comfortable day but then tomorrow we're heading into the upper 80s so still not bad at all. we'll be at 69 degrees along
5:41 am
coast. on sunday that's when it will really get hot for the interior valleys, 96 degrees will be the high temperature. 85 for the bay and the coast up to 76 degrees. a lot of events going on this weekend like every weekend in the bay area. and in mountain view it's happening with the art and wine festival in the upper 60s at 11:00 and then we'll see those temperatures make it into the mid-70s so still very comfortable as we go into the day and then if you're planning to go over towards the dell oweosso family farm during october, the month of october, well, they have bacon fest happening this weekend and tomorrow it's going to start out very comfortable but then those temperatures will heat up very fast. a lot of sunshine. make sure you bring some bottles of water. here we're going to be getting ready for the first home game for the 49ers on sunday happening at levi stadium.
5:42 am
kick off at 1:25 and the temperatures will be in the upper 80s. it will be hot out there and you know how when you're at levi stadium you get into some of the stairwells and you feel the wind blowing, we may have to do that to cool off with highs in the 90s. this is a live look at one of the resorts at squaw valley all lit up for you and we are going to see a chance of some lightning coming from the sky and temperatures today reaching 67 degrees. mid-70s for the rest of the weekend. i'll have a look at today's temperature trend coming up in three minutes. >> all right. we'll look forward to that. thank you, kari. if you're looking to buy a home, the new neighborhood where homes are selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars less than nearly any other spot in the bay area. >> i'll stick around to hear about that. plus, the president this morning. somebody called him a free range chicken.
5:43 am
5:44 am
5:45 am
it is 5:45 on this friday morning. we're seeing a few clouds as you head out the door and a nice, cool start with temperatures mostly in the mid-60s and we'll stay there throughout much of the morning. throughout the day warming up into the upper 70s today with a breezy wind and sunshine. you can't beat that. it only stays for a little while longer. a heat-up and an update on hurricane irma and the rest of the tropics coming up.
5:46 am
>> mild slowing for 580. not a major concern out of the altamont pass. i'll have an update for the south bay. thank you very much, kari and mike. it is 5:46 on your friday morning. the former head of the republican party describes president trump as a, quoek, free range chicken. >> he's ready to make a deal. >> it was michael steele who made the poultry comment a day after he stunned his fellow republicans by making a deal to raise the debt ceiling and fund the government. he said he would be willing to get rid of the debt ceiling forever, in fact. the government had to be funded but the president agreed to a shorter time line that will give them extra negotiating power. here is the on his new bipartisan attitude. >> i said it's time we walk out
5:47 am
and have a deal. they agreed. there was a lot of good spirit. >> congress could vote to raise the debt ceiling as early as today. congress passes a budget and almost always that budget is more money than we actually have. the difference between the two is debt. that comes due when we use up the money we have. the same congress approves the budget, approves the debt at a later date. schumer and the president say it would make more sense just to build raising the debt ceiling right into the budget process. that could happen as early as today. we'll continue to follow it and we're following it on twitter. you can always contact me directly on @scottmcgrew. >> major housing development is gaining steam and moving forward in santa is a. the new community will offer affordable prices. it's under construction on vacant lots not far from
5:48 am
