in florida and is moving up the coast.. putting several cities in serious danger. right now on this special edition of nbc news, hurricane irma roars up the coast, purting several cities in serious danger. thank you for joining us for the special edition of nbc news. >> dramatic situation continues to unfold at this hour. hurricane irma still unleashes its fury on florida. the biggest concern now for the tampa area. hurricane irma bearing down on the very city. we're talking toppled cranes, flooding and more than 3 million homes and businesses are still

without power tonight. >> and we're talking about winds topping out at 140 miles per hour. 60 miles north of west palm beach on the eastern side of florida. the damage in the florida keys now clearly visible. and you're looking tat right there. house to house searches going to start tomorrow in the keys. >> from the bay area to florida we begin live in myanmar, florida. it has been a tense 24 hours. a lot of stress, a lot of high emotions. >> reporter: that is the perfect way to describe exactly what's been going on around here. you can see behind me it's clearly dark but this is one of the streets that still has power. but this is of course only minor compared to damage we've seen in other areas. and of course we've seen a

dramatic change compared to what we were seeing a few hours ago with the whipping winds and the bands. i know that hurricane warning for the area has been down graded now to a tropical storm warning. what that means is there's still the threat of seeing strong, gust atropical storm winds in this area. so it's still not safe to be out here on the road. but we did see a few responders drive by and i know workers are already working to clear up damage in the area. i want to show you some of the video of the hardest hit impacts throughout the south florida area just as irma made land fall and caused serious damage in some areas. hurricane irma's force showed no mercy. destructive hurricane winds collapsed at least three craned under construction in miami. video captured dramatic moments

as they dangled from the high rise building. 10s of thousands of people in search of safety. for those taking cover if hadicide of the germane arena, staying dry proved to be difficult. they confirmed a leaking roof just as the eye of hurricane battered the walls of the arena. tornado warnings sounded off continuously for south florida with reports of a tornado raging through a palm bay mobile home park causing serious damage to several homes. and although the biggest impact for us here has passed, other parts of florida are still at a threat and we know there's still the threat of the surge warning being reemitted to the miami dade area and we're going to keep you updated with anything that becomes available but for now reporting live in florida. >> and we're glad to see it's

safe and well as well. let's get you dramatic video in miami. you can see what it looked like downtown today. lots of rain, serious flooding. this is an area normally crawling with tourists. ial arer showio video from the doubletree hotel. you can see the flood waters. we're talking wind causing catastrophic damage. irma literally ripping the roof off of buildings. wind roared through miami at roughly 130 miles per hour. so the next question is where will irma strike next? tampa is now in its eye. bracing for the impact and the devastation. now the city hasn't taken a direct hit from a major hurricane since 1921. meteorologist has been tracking irma's very move. people in tampa didn't

originally think it was going to go towards them. >> original forecast said on the atlantic cost, transitioning to the western gulf coast and the wind speeds very impressive around naples and marco island. 142 mile-per-hour gusts. downtown miami you saw the storm surge and wind gusts up to 109 miles per hour. right now category two hurricane just to the southeast of tampa. still to the north at about 4 miles per hour. and the highest surge so far has been south of fort meyers as much as 10 feet. winds on shore helping to pile up the water along the coast. notice tampa still technically an off shore breeze. that will change as the on shore winds return. right around the harbor inlet towards midnight tonight our time. irma weakening as it marches north tomorrow morning and

crosses over to a tropical stwrorm some could see as much as a foot of rain over the next few days. >> the rescue is already underway. a florida couple who decided to stay in their sail boat needed a lifeline this morning. passer by spotted that boat in trouble. brian gallagher is the owner. said he had had every intention of riding out the storm but irma proved too much. >> it's my home, it's everything i own so i was doing everything i could to save it and it just got out of hand. the electric pumps couldn't keep up with the water coming over it it. we just couldn't keep up with the water coming over the boat. >> well, gallagher says he and his boat have survived every storm that's hit the area in the past six years but not this one. north miami beach police say they rescued a mother and her four month old baby from rising

flood wautards. the mother planned to weather the storm at home. the water began rising so fast inside her apartment, she had had no choice but to call for help. >> nearly 70 peephole to be evacuated from an apartment c complex an hour north of the complex. emergency crews that had to rush in to get the residents out. a couple who lived in san jose for years and are etired to florida decided to ride out her cane irma in their cape coal home. they say they're okay but the conditions have worsened since we talked to them last night. she has an update. >> they're doing okay. but a lot has changed. they say the wind speed outside of their home have more than doubled and they've lost power. roofs ripped off, water rushing in, wind speeds topping 80 miles

per hour. this is what it looks like just a few miles away from jim and linda miller's cape choral home where they've hunkered down with their four cats to wait out hurricane irma. so far their house has held up but they lost power today. >> our batteries are running down. we got to get off. storm's only got up to maybe 80 miles per hour where we are now. >> retired bus driver had had most of his neighbors had evacuated. >> well, we're trying to decide if we're going to leave or not and we checked the highways and they're jammed. no gas was where we were going to go and we had pets and that would have been a mess too. >> they covered their windows with aluminum siding and bought extra food and water but admit their cell phones are losing

power and reception is spotty at best. president trump anounce he has approved a florida disaster declaration, making federal funds available for people in effected areas. >> i think we're really well coordinated and i'll tell you what we have great people. >> reporter: 13,000 federal workers have been committed. with nearly 2,000 prepositioned throughout the area, 7 million meals, 10 million liters of water along with tents and medical equipment. the millers say they've ridden out three hurricanes in their house since 2004 and feel confident they can do it again now during irma. >> we're going to be all right. >> we certainly hope so but it is going to be tough for them tonight because winds are expected to top 110 miles per

hour. the millers say they just have to hunker down until tomorrow morning. we certainly wish them luck. >> a lot of people are in their shoes. let's give you another look at tampa right now. we're talking strong winds. a very big problem as the hurricane continues to barrel in. she's going to continue to provide live reports over the next few days and she's updating her facebook page and twitter feed. so check in with those so you can get more information. and starting at midnight we're going to start airing nonstop coverage from nbc and of course we'll have today in the bay at 6:00 a.m. in the morning. still ahead a deadly shooting outside a san francisco night club. plus is it free speech or just crude and offensive?

flooding extremely high. it moves if to north florida by tomorrow morning. look at all the lightning strikes in california. right now we're seeing high clouds up out of the south. but as we zoom in off the coast of southern california, more than 200 lightning stwrieks. as early as midnight tonight, parlths of the south bay could see parts of this moisture coming to the south bay. look at san francisco. 75 degrees after a high in the upper 80s today. san jose and oakland in the upper 80s. that's actually close to the average high this time of year. pleasanten was 98 degrees this time of year. so as we go through the overnight hours, numbers not cooling off a whole lot. low to mid-60s in the central bay. thanks to extra cloud cover,

it's going to come down just a little bit. we're still look athlow to mid-90s but away from the upper 90s today. exception to the rule. likely still seeing highs in 97. 95 around concord and antioch. low 80s into oakland. san francisco upper 70s as opposed to the upper 80s. north bay highs 80s to low 90s. but our real attention is going to turn to all the action in southern california. here is the upper level low. we're tabbing tropical moisture and spinning it our way. you can see in san jose, santa cruz mountains, picking up showers. tomorrow morning looks like we catch a bit of a break but the biggest wave of moisture tomorrow evening, notice how it

irma hammered its way through cuba on its way to florida. fence torned down, guard hut damaged. the hurricane hit the island with a storm surge of up to 12 feet and winds as high as 150 miles per hour in a city that already has poor infrastructure. in florida most businesses are shut down but one waffle house kept the doors open this morning and it was pack would customers. one cook kept things running. they offered irma weekend specials on the menu. she figured there was really no reason to close. >> nothing out there right now. it's not crazy. i'm not flooded. i have a cook that was willing and here i am. >> keeping busy. eventually the restaurant did lose power and did have to close temporarily. it has been more than 15 hours since irma first made land fall in florida.

an update on irma's path in just about five minutes. schools will remain closed in parts of southern mexico after last week's 8.1 magnitude earthquake. classes are on hold in wuhaka. after shocks are still surrounding the area now. at least 90 people were killed in that earthquake. those made many nervous about going inside a church for sunday services. carried outside for open masses in several cities. pope francis suffered a cut on his face in the pope mobile. just a minor injury and he continued his visit on schedule. san francisco has the priceiest rent in the nation and after hurricane harvey, it has

the priceiest gas too. analysts say hurricanes caused the biggest price hike since 2011 because several refineries had to shut down. san francisco haz the highest annual gas price in the country at $3.21. a gallon. the average price for the rest of the country is $2.69. still ahead we're going to take you back out live to florida for a look at the damage as hurricane irma makes its way up the coast and inland a bit. plus. >> and right now we're watching the eye of the hurricane between tampa and orlando as the prime concern tonight is the storm surge pushing to the coast. particularly tampa bay. can see that rise as much as 6 to 9 feet. the latest on where the storm is heading next and thunder. right now... all eyes are on

hurricane irma still on the move tonight. right now all eyes on tampa. this is a live look over the city and that city now bracing for serious damage. now hours after making land fall this monster storm is still reeking havoc on florida. the extent of all the damage is not known yet because people havant had had a chance to go outside. >> the strength of hurricane irma, the intense winds. 60 miles south of fort meyers. let's get to miramar, florida. >> reporter: believe it or not this is the calmest that we've seen it the am had tire day. even though it looks like we're getting rain and gusty conditions, which is why the tropical storm warning remains in effect.

it's still coming down and you can see the wind whipping the water and the palm trees and we're seeing -- this is of course very minor compared to other areas that were hit the toughest. but a lot of these tree branchs. we've seen a couple of cars and they're pretty tough but if you look at snof images weir are arwatching. we saw roofs getting blown off, pounding waves hitting that sea wall in a number of areas. of course areas like the keys in miami they definitely saw more of the pounding conditions. but it's more apparent that det gooding back to normal is going to be tough and even though we can technically say we got lucky, we still saw very damaging winds and i know we did manage to see. i can tell you personally winds of 98 miles per hour. at one point when we were

running to our new vehicle to get some equipment, i felt like it could have easily knocked us down at one point. you can tell even though it may seem calm, there's moments where the ran bands start to pick up and see do the gusts. if you have any family out here, tell them to please stay inside. they're asking folks in broward county to stay inside until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. we understand they're already working on the clean up. reporting live in miramar, florida. >> thank you so much. and the damage is mounting. several communities now bracing for the worst. one of them, tampa and tampa bay. >> the storm moving slightly east of the national hurricane center forecast. but still very close to tampa. what she's seeing is the outer

bands hitting miami. let's take you in closer to tampa right now. we still have a category 2 hub hurricane. so our concern is the push of onshore winds keeping the storm surge levels high soulth of fort meyers. into tampa bay as the wind shifts on shore. that's going to push the water inland that will bring the storm surge up probably five to 10 feet, could see a storm surge up to nine feet as hurricane irma continues on. but look at are had the rain that has fallen in just the last 12 hours. the damaging winds, coastal flooding and rain. this will continue to progresses as a tropical storm across southern georgia into alabama during the day tomorrow. well, the fury actually started in the keys.

this is the storm chaser demonstrating how powerful those winds of hurricane irma. obviously this is not something anyone should be trying at home. he told the "today" show this is by the far the strongest, strongest wind he ever experienced. >> we got a wind gust measurement of 117 miles per hour. but i have no doubt there were some even stronger than that that our thermometers were not able to measure. it was so strong and powerful it made it impossible to stand up. >> i mean that's crazy to see that guy do that. the video was shot about seven miles east of key west. the eye wall actually packs the most devastating wind but inside the eye wall is where it's eerily calm. that's why you hear the expression the calm before the storm. this is the weather

meteorologist that couldn't stand up moments before and marvels at the incredible change. >> reporter: we're standing in the it eye of irma right now. it's an eery calm. barely a breeze, barely any rain. we've been in it for a solid eight/ten minutes. look how much lighter the skies are right now than they were maybe 20 minutes ago. >> now people in downtown naples emerged to get a bit of a fresh air. most are now worried about the storm surge at the coast. an overwhelming amount of work to be done. this is from fort lauderdale. first responders forced to seek shelters themselves and teams from northern california are among them as crissy smith reports they're in place and ready to respond to calls for help. sfwlrks as the eye of hurricane

restoration monday. the director of emergency services for the salvation army. >> i have nine senior trade managers. >> reporter: he believes four might need next week and holding training across the state. >> i want to make sure i'm able to cover our resources and needs here in california in addition to disasters we're responding to in other states. so last night we told you about a couple that used to live in san jose who moved to florida now and decided to ride out the hurricane. an update for us. how are they holding up now and what do they think of the decision to stay? >> well, they're still standing by it but they're a lot more nervous. a lot has changed since last night. they say the wind speeds more than doubled and they lost power. this is what it looks like near

to please come forward. >> a man called for help yesterday, said a sail boat was leaving him stranded. shower water prevented the coast guard. and there you go they pulled him up to safety. it is not the trendiest neighborhood in san francisco. housing site redfin says homes in the exelsier district sell for -- the average price for a home is cleose to $900,000. returning now to the coverage of hurricane irma still in a destruction path and tels luis doing what they can to help owners of the company's electric cars escape hurricane irma.

the company has pushed an update for some of the cars in florida so those car kz go farther before needing a charge. it gives them an extra 30 miles of range. update will be revurbsed by the company next saturday. not just people but animals evacuated to find safety during hurricane irma. the march of the flu mingos. heading to a shelter at bush gardens in tampa bay. they plan to check on them throughout the storm. they are safe this evening. we're taubing a lot about the storm surge and the threat it poses. water being sucked away from the shore. more from that from fort meyers. >> reporter: irma's surprise a rarely seen calm before the storm. tampa bay e.ied out. dogs playing where it's normally

feet deep. the water literally sucked out to sea. canals dropping, bays emptying up and down the west coast. people helping stranded man teess. even for floridians this is something new. it's become irma's calling card. this image from the bahamas went viral showing the sapphire sea gone as far as the eye can see. the water would normally be well over my head. the fear is all of this water that's gone out has to come back in. >> this has been a once in a lifetime tidal event. before makes land fall, people saw low water levels they've never seen on the west coast of florida. when the water rushes back in, it is going to rise feet in minutes. >> reporter: he's a fisherman in fort meyers.

have you ever seen it like this? >> never this low. this is going to be the worst one yet. >> reporter: so worried about the coming surge, he's staying with his boat. >> reporter: you're not going inside here? >> inside where? >> reporter: in a house. >> that's my boat. >> reporter: by morning all of this could be changed forever. nbc news fort meyer. earlier today i saw video of the beach in fort meyers and it was barren for miles it looked like and the reporter kept saying you need to come back inside because when it comes back, it's going to be bad. >> there was a negative tide minus three feet and within hours it came up a total of eight feet. so that's what we're seeing happen right now. the storm surge continues to climb. some places could see 12 to 15 feet of that sea level rise.

right now category two hurricane irma almost due east of tampa. you can see how it's slowly moving north. so it's the area of low pressure itself close to the water that acts a bit like a bubble. plus onshore winds help to pile that water back in. and technically tampa bay seeing winds out of the north and later on tonight we come in back on shore, that will begin to push more water on tampa bay. this area in white, this is the area she was referring to. 10 to 15 feet of potential storm surge. temperatures around the bay area today felt like summerer again. 90s in oakland and san jose. taking some time 250 cool down. not much of a sea breeze out there. most places still running about

10 to 15 degrees warmer than yesterday. 75 in san francisco. hour by hour running a little bit cooler. extra cloud cover and a bit stronger sea breeze. still 85 in pleasanten. right now highs in the tri-valley. it's going to be a bit more humid tomorrow as it clouds come out of the south. tomorrow we're expecting highs closer to the lower 90s. so not quite as warm. seven-day forecast will continue to bring the temperatures down through the week. so morning temperatures mild. upper 60s outside for areas around the santa clara valley. with clouds moving through south to north. a bit cooler here oakland into hayward with 80s. san francisco up towards san francisco highs in the 70s and for the east bay, 80s to low

90s. how much of this holds together, reaches the bay area, down towards south, that will aim this moisture back towards the bay area. and tries to toss showers in parts of the south bay. that could include a collapse of thunder right there. best opportunity for showers we think won't be tomorrow morning but rather tomorrow evening. you see a lot more activity from 8:00. monday into tuesday as the low sits off shore, that's leading to the chance of scattered shower chances. which tonight may fire up with chances. note this is temperatures coming down. humidity coming up next couple of days.
