nbc news has been bringing you live team coverage overnight. more on that in a moment. >> we also have our own problems here at home. bizarre weather overnight. thousands of people in the south bay in the dark right now after a wind storm brings down trees and power lines. a blustery start to monday morning. because of that, nbc bay area issued a weather alert. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm marcus washington. 4500 people are without power in the gaye. it's because of those winds we saw. >> yeah. it's from a thunderstorm well away from the bay area this morning, but we are feeling the effects as you head out and get a live look outside across the microclimates. temperatures generally in the 70s with mid-60s in the north bay. i want to show you the winds. they were in the south bay. it's a short duration event. in one or two hours, gusty winds. it's shifted into the north bay

and the storms to the south of us. as you head out, there may be wind damage. watch out for downed trees, tree limbs and the potential of more power outages over the next couple hours. i'll continue to track that. also, we'll talk more about our chances of storms in the forecast coming up. thousands of people waking up in the dark this morning, this after a wind storm blew through parts of the valley overnight. this is right here, live video or a live look of pg&e power outage website. most of the 4500 outages are in campbell, saratoga area. at one point, 12,000 customers were without electricity. christien kafton joins us with a closer look at what's happening, at least right there, kris? >> reporter: hi there. this traffic light has been going off and on because of the

wind event sweeping through the south bay. we have seen a lot of crews on the move, through this area this morning. we did get one worker up in a cherry picker taking branches down from a power line. those branches were across the roadway as well. this is video from a few hours ago where you can see the road signs being flipped in the wind. that's winchester and albright where a tree also came down. that is how a lot of folks end up losing power in storms like this one. at the height of the outages, 12,000 pg&e customers in the dark. the majority in campbell. the bulk appear to be in the san jose area. if you did your i can't recollect work this weekend, you will have to sweep up and blow those leaves again today. there is a lot of stuff in the air as well. be prepared to protect your eyes and be prepared to sneeze because there's a lot of pollen

and dust in the air as well. kris sanchez "today in the bay." >> thank you, kris. 6:04 right now. let's take you down to the hills of saratoga in the south bay. a large tree that was brought down by the wind, hanging on a power line, on top of that, a minivan is underneath that. luckily, no one was hurt. there's concerns that the line is still active and pg&e crews are out working to re-energize that line and eventually remove that tree. bob redell is there as well. we will check in with him in 30 minutes. stay up to date with weather in your neighborhood downloading the free nbc bay area app. you can see the forecast in your city. now, to hurricane irma coverage. the storm blasted across tampa and st. petersburg. the system is now a tropical storm as it moves north toward georgia. the sun, now breaking through in

florida. we will soon see the extent of that damage left behind. >> right now, house-to-house searches are about to get under way in florida keys. police will be looking for survivors now that the storm passed through. here is where things stand at this hour. so far, no confirmed deaths after the storm made land fall twice. crews are still assessing some of that damage. millions are without power across florida. we are still monitoring the possibility of tornadoes in the northeast, areas of florida and north georgia today. in the meantime, local first responders on alert this morning, ready to assist in the disaster. teams from northern california arrives in florida before hurricane irma rolled through. that includes more than 100 troops from the national guard, 129 rescue wing based in the field. sergeant joseph says they expect to be mobilize zed sometime today. >> the goal here is to assist and aid anybody that sheltered

the "uss hornet." white doves will be released over the all wars memorial at 5:30. back to our microclimate weather alert coverage. we want to talk to kari hall who has been watching this all morning. >> it's 6:09. we are starting to see the strong winds blowing out from the thunderstorms, shifting well to the north now into parts of the north bay. we are still tracking those storms, not everyone into the bay area yet because of a storm system and you can see all of these lightning strikes now just saw 145 lightning strikes both inland and offshore. we will have a slight chance of some of those showers moving in throughout the day. as of now, the rain is south of monterey. we'll have an update on that in a few minutes. avoid the san mateo bridge? >> yes. westbound 90 is jammed. that is typical but this is south, barely crawling along.

impact this morning.. at 6:30, back to our hurricane irma coverage. thousands are bracing for impact this morning. itis been downgraded to a tropical storm. right nou, irma is in northwest florida making its way to georgia. as the powerful storm continues to move more north, we are getting a better glimpse of the damage left in its path. >> many without power as the rain and winds batter the state, causing damage to street signs and light poles.

sarah is live in tampa with what we are seeing there this morning. that storm passed. now we are truly seeing the effects of what is left behind. >> reporter: that's right. it was a weakened hurricane irma that passed over the tampa bay/st. petersbeurg area overnight. residents, this morning, are anxiously waiting to see how their home fared. roaring up the florida coast, hurricane irma is weakened, but still dangerous. high winds and high storm surge, leaving homes inundated by water, city streets transformed into rivers and millions without power. >> it is deadly, it is massive. there will be damage to our system. we are already seeing it. >> reporter: more than 100,000 filling emergency shelters

across the state. >> we are helping one another whatever way we can. again, my grand kids are safe. >> reporter: the phenomenon called hurricane bulge, holding water temporarily into the storm, stranding two manatees rescued by two good samaritans. miami escaped the eye of the storm, but not the damage. cranes toppled while conditions forced emergency personnel off the road at points. at sea, a daring rescue. >> my home is everything i own, so, i was doing everything i could to save it. it just got out of hand. >> reporter: a monster storm, not releasing its grip on the sunshine state. >> that was sarah reporting for us. you are looking at pictures of jacksonville, florida where you can see flooding has begun. this is one thing we will keep track of throughout the morning. follow us on air and online for

technology, engineering and math, also ♪ as s.t.e.m. women in s.t.e.m. award men and women to end the gender gap in the tech world. more than 100 people were honored. >> we honor you, meteorologist, kari hall. >> thank you. a lot to watch here. we have had so much active weather, not only locally, but, of course, with hurricane irma, we are tracking that for all our friends and family in the south. we are looking here at a storm system moving in. an area of low pressure, that is now just offshore, but, look at all the lightning strikes. all those icons that pop up there are detected from cloud-to-ground by the radar. we have seen a number of strikes this morning. even since last night, as it has storm system moves closer, we have had gusty winds, and the number of strikes, just in this area, 145. thankfully, we haven't seen

lightning in the bay area. this is well south of the monterey area. it's been down toward big sur. you can see how active the storms are. the lightning icons covering up what we are seeing here as far as rain on the radar. we have strong winds that moved from south to north and we are still tracking some of those higher wind speeds over napa and fairfield. now, sustained at 25 miles an hour and we saw what those wind speeds did for the south county, knocked out a lot of power and knocked down tree branches. as we go through the day, the weather calming down and mostly sunny skies. look at what happens tonight. the storms moving from the central valley to the east bay and north bay as well. we will have a chance of storms not only this afternoon and evening, but also for tomorrow. so, as we head throughout the day, it is going to be very warm, high temperatures low 90s and also high humidity. so, as you head out for the bus stop this morning, we are

looking at tree branches down and breezy winds. at recess, the skies clear and humid. at 1:00, hot and muggy with partly cloudy skies. we'll talk about what is coming up and mike is happy to report an improving commute. >> we had major jams. sunol cleared. a nice, easy drive for pleasanton. i want to zoom in toward the prop we have been having across 92, the san mateo bridge. a car fire did clear. we have good recovery, but jammed from hayward to the peninsula side. closed 880 because of a crash at whipple. trying to get to the dumbarton bridge. let's see how things are moving. traffic is moving better than it was. it was almost at a standstill.

morning... at 6:24, continuing coverage on hurricane irma. it continues to blast through florida this morning. it's now been downgraded to a tropical storm as it continues to move north. we are getting new images of the destruction in naples. one of the first looks we are getting of the damage inflicted by irma in that part of florida. you can see downed trees, heavy rains flooded neighborhoods as well. powerful winds damaged a lot of buildings, tearing the roof off one structure. we continue to monitor the situation throughout the morning for you as we are assessing damage left behind. a live report at 6:30 this morning. >> that feeling is raw for people in texas and florida

where hurricanes harvey and irma drove up prices. >> they want you to know how to catch gouging that could be happening here. >> your smartphone is vital when you suspect someone of being a gouger. the attorney general takes complaints and pictures of price tags, help prosecute those who hike prices during the disaster. photos don't guarantee justice. social media went nuts with this post that showed an electronic store selling 24-pack of water for $42.96. angry commenters bash it as gouging. the store later apologize zed. this wasn't gouging. they say they usually sell water for $1.79 a bottle, they multiplied it by 24 in the pack to get the case price of $42.96. it didn't violate texas law.

hurricane irma weakening, but still leaving behind destruction overnight. right now, crews are beginning the recovery process as the storm moves north, we have complete coverage on what is next for the people of florida, coming up. first, we are under a microclimate weather alert at home. thousands of people without power after a wind storm battered the area overnight. good morning and thanks for joining us, i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's get right to kari hall. the winds were strong overnight. >> yes, they were. especially for the south bay. we are seeing things clear out as we look outside in san hjose. we are not tracking storms locally, yet. we will have the chance in the forecast as we go through the rest of the day. live in san francisco, nice and quiet. look at all the storms to the south of us. all of these icons here show live lightning from cloud-to-ground because of a storm system that is rotating offshore. we have been feeling the outflow from the storms with winds at times gusting up to 40 miles an

hour and, yes, all those downed trees are from winds up to 40 miles an hour. you can just imagine what it's like for friends in florida dealing with gusts over 10 miles an hour. all the lightning strikes we have seen so far remained around the big sur area, south of monterey and moving offshore. the lightning strikes up to 145 at this hour and counting. we will be tracking this chance. tonight, i'll have more on that later. >> we'll check back with you, thanks, kari. >> thousands across the area are without power. overnight, trees and power lines fell throughout the area. >> bob redell is live where crews have a road closed off, we understand. >> reporter: good morning. yes, you have a small section of the drive, you can see behind me crossing the road at peach hill road in saratoga.

pg&e has a short section shut down. as you can see, there's a large section of tree dangling over that minivan. i can't tell if it's a pine or eucalyptus. it is dangling on the power line. it appears the line is energized due to the fact homes still have the power on. i was the first to respond along with the sheriff's office around 3:00 this morning. pg&e, you should have been able to see headlights in our direction. they are out here. we are assuming waiting to de-energize the line to get a tremendous trimmer out here to remove the tree. fortunately, no one was inside the minivan at the time. it's just getting the lines de-energized. we spoke with the county fire department. he estimates, based on what kari was saying, he's hitting around 40 miles an hour in the hills in a freak wind storm.

bob redell, "today in the bay." >> woke a lot of people up overnight. stay up to date with weather in the area. there you can see the forecast in your city. >> 6:33. now to the hurricane irma coverage. that storm has been downgraded to a tropical storm. as it moves into georgia, we are seeing the damage left behind in florida. we just got this video into the news room showing the damage left in naples, florida. this is near where irma made land fall. here is where things stand. so far, no confirmed deaths after the storm made landfall twice. right now, millions are without power across florida. we are still monitoring the posz possibility of tornadoes. a couple who retired to florida from the bay air yachlt. >> they decided to hunker down on florida's gulf coast.

wind speeds topped 80 miles an hour there, blowing roofs off buildings. a retired bpa driver tells us why they decided to stay. >> reporter: when we just tried to decide if we were going to leave or not, we checked the highways, they were jammed, no gas. where we were going to go. we had pets. that would have been a mess, too. >> yes, they have four cats. they say they have ridden out three hurricanes in their house since 2004 and they were confident they could do it again during irma. we hope they are okay and hope to get word from them, soon. >> absolutely. as irma heads out of florida, menlo park firefighters will head to the disaster zone. they left last week, took five days to get there. they are one of thousands ready to help out. stay with bay area news for continuing coverage of hurricane irma. we will bring live reports over the next few days.

we are constantly updating facebook as well as twitter feed. happening now at 6:34, the nation remembering one of america's darkest days. the day the twin towers came crumbling down in the deadliest terror attack. this is a live look. there you can see president trump is with melania placing are wreath. nearly 3,000 people died on september 11th in 2001. countless other lives have been affect affected in the years since. here at home, cities across the bay area remembering all the lives that were lost. >> we are live in san francisco where the ceremony is about to begin. good morning, sharon. >> reporter: good morning. yes, the ceremony is about to get under way. you can see right here, this is where it will take place. fire engines will pull out in the driveway and firefighters will be standing at attention.

the ceremony will begin in ten minutes. firefighters are remembering the first responders and civilians who lost their lives in the 9/11 attack. at 6:59 this morning, the time of the south tower collapse in 2001, the firefighters will ring the bell that cig any fies the last alarm. this ceremony will take place at all 44 fire stations in the city. i just spoke with a neighbor who came out here. she didn't want to go on camera, but told me she is so happy they do hold these events every year since 9/11 because it provides an outlet for people to express their grief and respect for the fallen heroes. she lost a few firefighter friends at the world trade center. live in san francisco, sharon

"today in the bay." >> thank you for that information. >> we have to remember where we were on this day so many years ago in 2011. this is at the pentagon where they just unfolded the american flag on the side of the building. of course, one of the attackers flew a plane into that site there. so many people have been gathering together. they gather every year to mark this very dark day in american history. >> the day many will never forget. people remember where they were at this moment when not only they hit the twin towers in new york, but there's the pentagon in washington, d.c. certainly a place that you wouldn't expect something like this to happen. back 16 years ago, you know, but then it happened here. ever since then, people have not forgotten about that. i think a lot of people have become stronger since then. you can drive by the pentagon now and see it's a beautiful sight. we do not forget. they draped the flag over the side of the building as as sign

of remembrance of what happened there 16 years ago today. >> it's hard to believe it's been 16 years. i remember getting the first reports from our producer. seems like there's a fire in a building. a plane went into a building, then a plane that hit the twin towers and we came out live and continuously went live for eight hours after that. the pentagon, across the country. now, of course, america unified after that time in such a tremendous way. we'll continue to check back on all the commemoratives going on throughout our nation this morning on this september 11th. 6:38 right now. >> yeah, right now, we are looking at what's going on with the weather and microclimate weather alert in this area because of the strong winds that knocked out power to thousands. >> surprising a lot of people, waking them up. let's get the latest on the conditions from kari hall.

>> we say red sky morning sailors warning. we are seeing these storms firing up south of the bay area around monterey. look at all the lightning strikes. it is really busy here. we are seeing an area of low pressure bringing the strong wind gusts that have since calmed down in the south bay, but moved into the delta and north bay with sustained winds at 24 miles an hour with higher gusts. we will have a chance of isolated storms as we go through the day. we could see a lot more of that activity firing up tonight and into the day tomorrow. so, i'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike said the roadways calmed down a bit. >> we had debris from the wind overnight, we talked about that for the south bay. then the crash cleared and the car fire cleared on westbound 92. we typically see that volume build out of hayward and across. all lanes clear.

it's 6:43 as we take a live look outside this monday morning. a beautiful sunrise. storms nearby and we have had wind damage here in parts of the south bay. watch out for the downed tree branches on the way to work. it's going to be a hot and humid day. highs in the low 90s. i'll talk about this and the chance of storms in the forecast in five minutes. we are looking at the bottom number, 31 jamming up southbound. 880 out of hayward, we'll talk about why and what's causing it. thank you very much. 6:43 right now. now to the hills of saratoga in

the south bay. a large tree came crashing down because of the high winds in the area. the tree is hanging on a power line and right underneath that is a minnivan. it happened overnight and no one was hurt. >> it's concerning the active pg&e crews, the lines out there. they are working to de-energize the line and remove that tree. certainly an active morning for them. >> they have a lot of work ahead of them. because of the wind storm, thousands of people lost power. this is a map that we got at 4:30 of the outages in the area. by 5:00 a.m., the number was down to 7,000. now, just about 2500 without power. at 6:44, outrage at uc berkeley. police are receiving backlash of officers ticketing a hot dog

vendor. a witness started filming that outside uc berkeley's football game. police issued a ticket to a man who didn't have a permit to sell food. then he looked through the vendor's wallet and took his money. many said he not only unfairly targeted him he says he works construction during the week and was trying to earn a little extra money. >> translator: people saw i wasn't doing anything wrong. i wasn't stealing or drinking, i was working to sustain my family. >> we reached out to uc berkeley pd for comment. so far, they have yet to respond. >> donald trump's adviser says firing james comey was the worst decision in american politics. >> good morning. bannon said that in the first

interview since he lost his job as top white house adviser. bannon told cbs' charlie roads, firing the fbi director, james comey was jared kushner's decision. he tried to get him not to fire the head of the fbi. this came out last night. not only did trump fire comey, he admitted on national television, he fired him because of the russia investigation. on the face of it, is obstruction of justice. firing comey led to the appointment of the essential counsel, whose only job is investigating the russia connection. voter fraud is being investigated in a state he claimed is full of voter fraud, though he never gave evidence of it. the republicans have a number of races in the air. bannon and breitbart are going

south of the bay area. we will have that chance as the storm system rotates and lifts to the north as we go into the evening. the seven day forecast comes up at the bottom of the screen, we start with hot temperatures. it will be cooling down later. here is a look at the wind speeds, sustained at 24 miles an hour. it will stay breezy for the next hour or two before it calms down. skies will clear today and be a very muggy day. we are looking at, also, a chance of more storms moving into our area later this evening. here we are at 9:30. we start to see the storms popping up in the east bay as well as the north bay. we can see that around the bay area tonight and tomorrow morning with a chance of more of those storms by tomorrow afternoon. i'll continue to keep you up-to-date on that. meantime, we are in for another hot day. factor in the humidity and it's going to stay very uncomfortable. as you are getting ready this morning, take a look out the window. a good day to start with a hat because it may be breezy out

there and short sleeves to keep you nice and cool. we are keeping you up-to-date on tropical storm irma and spreading all that rain not only across florida, georgia, south carolina and north carolina with some tropical storm force winds and some high rain. over the next couple of days, for the first time ever in parts of the southeast, they are issuing tropical storm watches and warnings because of the high winds that will be spreading into those areas over the next couple of days. also, closely monitoring hurricane jose, still over the open atlantic. i want to show you what the computer models do with the hurricane over the next couple days. it sits there and does a loop de loop. by the end of the week, it could remain a hurricane and target some of the same areas dealing with irma. at this point, we'll have to watch to see if it moves into florida as well as parts of the east coast. now, for us, make sure you are following me on facebook and twitter. i'll have more on the bay area

storm chances and more info on irma over the next several days. we will have storms in the forecast for san francisco today as well as tomorrow. then a slight chance early on wednesday. as that storm system moves out, the temperatures cool down. look how hot it is going to be today for the inland valleys, up to 93 degrees. more on that coming up. mike is tracking the slow drive on the nimitz. >> i am. looking at overall a good commute. the upper shore freeway is a half mile from highway 4 to the bay bridge toll plaza. that's great news. to the south, crashes moved to the side from 87 to 85. it's not bad compared to the typical commute. the trivalley is starting to build toward highway 84. much better than before. we had a crash there which cleared. there was traffic flow recovery. over here, we have not the castro valley so much, but

coming through haywood, made worse because of folks avoiding the san mateo bridge while there was a car fire. we see a slow drive to fremont. you can see the stretch right here. compare routes. if you are wondering, if i'm traveling here, getting to the peninsula was the better route. you see three colors. the purple route across the dumbarton bridge is the best route. here, the slowing on the san mateo bridge. the dumbarton bridge, as the commute shifts, keep track of things. the bridge is the best across in the westbound direction. make sure you are part of our waze system. it's nbc bay area wazers. we'll share the information. back to you. >> thank you very much.

coming up, we continue our hurricane irma coverage as the sunrises over florida and the storm downgraded to a tropical storm. the new images of destruction we are seeing this morning. at 6:53, a collision of two trains in skits land. there's no word of fatalities, but there are reports that at least 30 people are injured. we are staying on top of, of course the developments in florida with hurricane irma as we have been telling you. it is now downgraded to a tropical storm. they are tweeting pictures and nrvegs. we'll be right back with more news.

to j.p. morgan investment expertise can help you. . welcome back. 6:256. before you head out the door, the top stories. back to hurricane irma a tropical storm moves north toward georgia. the storm is now passing florida. soon, we'll see the full extent of the damage left behind. this is a live look from albany, georgia. the winds are picking up there. here is where things stand at this hour. so far, no confirmed deaths after the storm made land fall twice. crews are still assessing the damage. millimeterses are without power across florida. we are still monitoring the possibility of tornadoes in the northeast and georgia, today. this morning, local first responders are telling us they are ready to assist in the disaster zone.

bay because of the power outages we had. because of the outflow from the storms that are to the south of us, you can see it being lit up by lightning detected by the radar. this is south of monterey and we'll be rolling to the north as we go into this evening. so, we will have a chance of storms, temperatures coming down a few degrees, but you will not be able to tell the difference. it is going to be muggy with highs in the 90s. 78 in san francisco and 90 in santa rosa. over the next several days, we'll have storms in the forecast, looking at today and tomorrow and then it winds down on wednesday. cooler and drier air moving in. we are going to have a lot to track over the next couple days with storms moving in, starting tonight, especially in parts of the east bay. >> good to know there. >> there's a crash out there? >> that's right. muggy weather, it is warm so we have more motorcycle drivers.
