breaking right now.. shots fired in a south bay community.. we )re live as campbell police fired in the south bay community. we are live as police continue to canvas the area in searcher of a possible suspect. good morning and thanks for joining us, i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. i want to get a look at our forecast before we get to that breaking news. here is kari. >> we do start out this morning with cooler temperatures and still some clouds lingering as we are going to have this all clearing out throughout the day as we take a live look outside in san francisco. temperatures there reaching 67 and 77 in san jose. all across the bay area much cooler temperatures and the humidity will be dropping, too. great news in the weather department. we will talk about the weekend and what's ahead coming up in a few minutes.

as we head over to mike, you're tracking a big crash in castro valley. >> details just coming in right now. i heard folks yelling about a fire possibly. i do know that we have two big rigs reported, westbound 580 your commute direction through dublin and castro valley around eden canyon road, also castro valley boulevard. you see the sensors blowing. a couple big rigs involved. this might have started with a stalled big rig and crash injuries sound like they are involved as well. chp is not on scene yet. this could prove to be a huge issue as folks travel off the dublin interview and over towards castro valley. i will show you the live camera we have in dublin, traffic is moving slowly with those taillights over toward the scene. i have heard a lot of activity and a lot of chatter in the newsroom, i'm following up. back to you. we also have breaking news in campbell right now where police tell us they have arrested an armed man near

highway 17 in hamilton after he fired several shots at officers. now, this started about 1:00 overnight, the officers responding to reports of a prowler outside of a home on cyprus lane. that's near 17 and hamilton as i mentioned. officers say when they located the suspect, he ran into a nearby yard. that's when he fired about 12 times. no officers were injured. they eventually took that suspect into custody near los gatos creek but they are still combing that area trying to make sure there are no outstanding suspect. today in the bay's kris sanchez is gathering information now. happening today all eyes will be on uc berkeley when conservative commentator ben shapiro comes to town tonight. his arrival has been well publicized and the entire city of berkeley is bracing for this. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell there with some of the preparations under way this

free speech. >> thank you very much, bob. of course, we are going to stay on top of this story all day long. we will have live reports in our evening newscast as well. for en stant coverage you can always head to our website nbcbayarea.com. happening today, three suspects in a deadly shooting in san francisco's mission district will face a judge. police say the gun used in that shooting was an officer's personal handgun. now, that officer could be facing jail time as well. police say the shooting happened last month at 26th and south van ness. it happened just days after authorities say that the suspect's stolen handgun was from an off duty officer's private vehicle. that officer could receive six months in jail due to a gun required -- a gun left in a parked car to be in a lockbox. that lockbox needs to be secured in the trunk. former supervisor davie compost wrote the law. >> the idea was to make sure

that every person in this city, every san franciscoen knows that they have responsibility if they have a gun and leave it in a vehicle that it has to be secured. >> the car break in and gun theft were not reported because police say that there were no visible signs of the burglary and the officer did not realize that the vehicle had been broken into nor that the firearm had been stolen. nbc bay area's investigative unit has found that between 2010 and 2015, 412 guns were stolen in san francisco. the man accused of shooting two off duty oakland firefighters and killing one of them is expected in court for a plea hearing today. investigators say oliver hunio shot the firefighters last month after a music festival. jake walter died, the other firefighter is expected to recover. prosecutors say the shooting appears to be unprovoked. coming up, in the hot seat as the ceo as equifax prepares to testify its stocks is plummeting. and what's next for the

high. the dow rising 39 points to 22158 while the nasdaq added 5 to 6460. equifax says a web server flaw led to the data breach. the company's ceo richard smith is expected to testify before a house panel on october 3rd. nearly 40 u.s. states have joined a probe into how equifax handled the breach. facial recognition technology in the new iphone 10. senator franken has sent a letter to apple saying his primary concern is the company could use the face print to benefit other parts of its business. apple could also sell the data to third parties for surveillance services or even get requests from law enforcement to access the system. marcus and laura, back over to you. >> thanks a lot, kate. if you're looking to buy a home near apple's new spaceship

campus it's going to cost you. one south bay home recently went for $800,000 over the asking price. that home is in sunnyvale three miles from the apple new campus located on bernal court. the listing agent priced it aggressively at $1.7 million. the sellers had lived there for more than five decades and paid around $50,000 when they first bought the home. >> we knew we would get offers and which expected to get five or eight offers, maybe ten offers, but we ended up with over 20 offers on it. so it worked out very well for him. >> we did not overpay for it, we paid market value. >> wow. so the buyers' realtor says that the other homes in the area were selling for around $2.1 million. this property she says had a much larger home and lot size. >> and a nice tree in front, too. >> yeah. >> $800,000 tree. 4:41 right now. coming up, a pretty pleasant start to our thursday morning. >> it is really nice out there, no need for the umbrella.

francisco a very good now thursday morning, taking a live look outside loafer looking san franciscoment at least you can make out the transamerica pyramid this morning with those high clouds out there. should be a pretty pleasant day. just checking kari had the forecast for the willow glen area, looks gorgeous. >> i know you guys probably had a really good time out there with the treat truck yesterday. was it windy? >> it was kind of warm, in fact. >> humid. >> it was all that cloud cover. >> yeah, and it was cloudy yesterday. it's starting out cloudy in morning and as we go through the day we will start to see that all clearing out. we can still see those breezy winds evidenced by the flag there as we take a live look outside in treatmefremont. it will be breezy today because

we had that system yesterday that brought us isolated storms through the morning and cooler temperatures today. seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen, looks pretty good. as we get a look at our high temperatures today up to 79 degrees in east san jose. as we move over towards the east bay upper 70s to lower 80s, one warmer spot in concord this afternoon, 74 degrees today in hayward, the peninsula also 74 in redwood city. san francisco reaching 67 in the mission district and the north bay in santa rosa expect a high of 76 degrees. it will be right on par with yesterday but it won't be as muggy. we saw the skies clearing so as you're standing out in front of the closet getting ready for the day it will be a good day to grab a hat because we will have the winds gusting around. it will give you a little shade later on today. also you will be comfortable wearing long sleeves especially to start out now that those temperatures are a little lower. looking at the wind speeds throughout the day, we are

already starting out with a few breezes, our winds will be picking up at 15 to 20 miles per hour especially on the coast and in san francisco today it will be sustained winds at 20 miles an hour with some higher gusts. and as we go into the next several days our temperatures remain in the 60s. there will be a chance of rain on tuesday and also on wednesday with some showers just to the north of us, we will have to see if it works its way in. also as we look at the inland areas it is going to be so pleasant over these next seven days, no extreme heat and i think we can for a while leave the air conditioner off. as we head over to mike a major crash now in castro valley. >> we have a live shot behind me. these folks are on scene, i was not. this is one of the big rigs involved. i'm hearing that this crash where our photographer just arrived seconds ago has piece td through this, we see the fire department on scene, i'm told there are some injuries, sounds like there may be major injuries, we haven't gotten confirmation on details. this is a major issue. a couple big rigs involved, you

see two ambulances right here in this live shot, the fire crews, they are not running around, they've been there for a while. i can tell you that all traffic westbound 580 is stopped. this is not open to traffic flow. heading out of dublin and in toward castro valley this is west 580 at eden canyon road. this will be a major problem. let me show you where this has cut off the traffic flow. this is coming from dublin interchange. it is cut off right here, eden canyon road, castro valley boulevard that entire corridor is coming off of the dublin grade and it is jammed right now. i'm not sure what they are going to do about the cars stuck on the roadway. you might have to head south down toward 680 through niles canyon and make mission over toward 8806789 i know that's a long way but just stay clear of this crash. this will be an issue. we don't know when chp expects to clear it because we are still trying to get the details on the

extent of the crash and injuries. maybe there's fluid hopefully it's not fuel through the area. you can go north if you're north of the interchange, if over toward highway 24 and get around this as well. again, i expect this to be a problem for a couple hours at the very least. we will see how it develops. perhaps i'm wrong with the details that first came in from chp but we will wait for them to update us. for now make your way around north or south but avoid west 580 traveling out of dublin and in toward castro valley at eden canyon, that's where we're following a major crash, guys. had 49 mountain view is growing and now the city is considering new transit options like driveless trains to ease traffic congestion. the mercury news reports the trains could run along shoreline or moffett boulevard, the idea is to move people from the google plex and shore pair i can't to the transit hub downtown. the trains might resemble the people movers used at sfo.

leaders will discuss the people mover plan at a community meeting at the end of the month. it's had 49. san francisco part of muni's central subway may open before the entire line is finished in late 2019. the line will eventually run from mission bay to china town with stops including mass coney center and union square. city leaders are considering opening the union square to mosconi center once crews finnish that portion. big changes could be coming for new drivers in california. a bill now on the governor's desk would give drivers under 21 restricted licenses. governor brown signs the bill into law new drivers would not be allowed to drive between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. they would also not be allowed to drive passengers under 21. those rules would only last for the first year of driving, many younger drivers say they feel pulled between safety and freedom. >> really inconvenient and it kind of feels kind of like a

punishment, i guess, for younger people. >> the younger generation could be more prone to distractions in the car due to lack of experience behind the wheel. >> the rules do not apply if the driver is commuting between school and work. now, we investigated overnight and according to 2013 study by the state dmv one in every 11 teenage drivers is involved in a car crash each year and one in three get a ticket. those numbers are higher for teenagers than any other age group. >> it's 4:51 right now. a bill calling for the state to generate 100% of its electricity from clean energy sources by 2025 is struggling in the assembly. the bill doesn't seem to have enough support in the assembly. remember, as we've been supporting legislators have until tomorrow to pass those bills and get them to the governor's desk or they will have to wait until january and then try again. >> new this morning we uncovered recent data about air pollution

in the united states and it turns out americans are exposed to less air pollution than a decade ago, but there is still a racial gap. researchers from the university of washington looked at neighborhood levels of nitrogen dioxide from 2000 to 2010. overall exposure dropped for all races and income levels, but non-whites were consistently exposed to much higher levels than their white peers. experts say closing that gone could have prevented up to 5,000 premature deaths from heart disease. coming up, a historic step bart is taking today that will open the door for lgbt businesses. happening now, the latest threat from north korea not only raises new tension in asia, some are calling it simply outrageous. the rogue nation is suggesting it possesses a nuclear bomb that could sink japan into the sea. japanese leaders say that the threat is raises tensions to new
