with top democrats after the democrats claimed a late-night dinner resulted in a deal on immigration and border security and that wall. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is at the white house for us. peter, good morning. >> matt, savannah, good morning to you. exactly what happened last night? that depends who you ask. the democratic leaders declaring they effectively made a deal with the president to extend protections for young undocumented immigrants. president trump saying not exactly but even the idea that the president is softening his stand on immigration is infuriating fierce conservatives, one of them calling it the art of the steal. this morning a political back-and-forth over the art of the deal. >> the wall will come later. >> reporter: president trump making these comment this is morning while leaving for florida to assess hurricane damage. just hours after tweeting "no deal was made last night on daca, massive border security would have to be agreed to in exchange for consent. would be subject to vote." it comes after the president late wednesday working around

his own party hosted chuck schumer and nancy pelosi at the white house. on the menu, tax reform, border security, infrastructure, trade and how to resolve the dispute over so-called dreamers. after the administration's move to end the obama era policy, protecting young undocumented immigrants from deportation. after the sit down, the democratic leaders announcing "we agreed to enshrine the protections of daca into law quickly and to work out a package of border security excludeing the wall that's acceptable to both sides." some republicans outraged congressman steve king tweeted "if the story is correct, trump base is blown up, destroyed, irreparable and disillusioned beyond repair. no promise is credible." others praising the president, like senator jeff flake, "kudos to potus for pursuing an agreement that will protect d.r.e.a.m.ers from deportation." meanwhile, the white house pushed back saying excluding the wall was certainly not agreed to. schumer and pelosi releasing a statement saying in part "while

both sides agree the wall would not be any part of this agreement, the president made clear he intends to pursue it at a later time and we made clear we would continue to oppose it." all of it a strategic shift from the president, shocking the capitol last week by cutting a deal with the democrats on a debt ceiling extension, pulling the rug from under the gop. the president later running with pelosi requests he tweet reassurance to the nearly 800,000 d.r.e.a.m.ers. his press secretary praising her boss by trashing his predecessor. >> this president has done more for bipartisanship in the last eight days than obama did in eight years. >> reporter: frustrated by hoe slowly things are getting done, including the republican's failure to repeal and replace obamacare. not long ago trump mocked schumer as the head clown, pelosi as a loser. >> i think she's incompetent, actually. >> reporter: now he's kossi icop to the democrat due wrote. >> we would like something to happen. >> reporter: even sounding like

promised to democrats over dinner and what republicans are going to do. don't forget at the end of the day they control whether or not these kids are going to find a legislative fix. you add this to what the president was saying to our chuck todd just a year or two ago. i want you to look at that and then we'll talk about it. >> the dream act executive order, daca. >> we have to make a whole new set of standards -- >> you'll split up families? you'll deport children? >> no, we'll keep the families together. we have to keep the families together. >> but you'll keep them together out -- >> but they have to go. >> reporter: that is the opposite of what the president is saying this morning which is hey, we want to find a way to keep these kids here but the most important piece of this and chuck schumer's office has been talking about this, he the senate minority leader that the president apparently told democrats that he won't require them to offer money to build the wall in this package in exchange for a fix for these dreamer

kids. and that is something that might allow democratic votes for such a bill. we'll have to see how the actual details unfold but i do think that regardless of how confusing it may be marks an important turning point in these negotiations. matt, savannah? >> all right, kasie, thank you very much. >> thank you, kasie. a lot more to get to including new information on wednesday's deadly school shooting in washington state. we're learning more about the teenage suspected in custody and the victim. nbc's joe fryer is at the scene for us this morning. joe, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning, classes here are canceled today as authorities investigate the shooting. three students remain hospitalized, recovering from gunshot wounds and a fourth classmate who was killed is being called a hero for trying to stop the shooter. just hours after gun fire broke out inside this washington state school, the rockford community held emotional vigils to honor the victims, all of them shot, authorities say, by a fellow student.

>> we ask for that peace to be with all of those who are involved. >> reporter: the sheriff says the teenage student came to freeman high school wednesday morning heavily armed. he tried to fire one gun but it jammed. >> he went to his next weapon. a student walked up to him, engaged him and he was shot and did not survive. >> as students took cover inside classrooms, the sheriff says the armed student fired more shots down a hallway. chris tan crist was there. >> it sounded like a firecracker going on. i remember lights going off at kids' head point blank. >> reporter: one student was killed, three more shot and injured? >> one in the back, one in the arm. >> reporter: panicked parents rushed to the school, most were reunited with their traumatized kids. authorities say the shooter was stopped by a school custodian who stepped in and ordered him

to surrender. officials have not released the name of the suspect, seen here in handcuffs. nbc is not identifying him because he's a juvenile but michael harper says he knows the shooter. >> one of my best friends brought a gun in a duffel bag to school. >> reporter: harper says the alleged suspect had been watching documentaries on school shootings and students who know the suspect confirm his youtube channel features these videos, since deleted, which show him firing guns. the investigation is just getting started but the sheriff says the suspect may have brought the guns to the school because of a bullying situation. >> we need to figure out what's gone wrong with our society that our children decide that they need to take weapons to deal with the issues that they're facing. >> the suspect is being held in a juvenile detention facility just one day before the shooting this school held a lockdown drill to prepare for this exact situation. officials say that may have

helped save a number of lives. matt and savannah, back to you. >> joe, thank you. another major story we're covering, the ongoing impact of hurricane irma. a criminal investigation has been launched into the deaths of eight residents at a nursing ho. three days after the storm made landfall. this as the ongoing recovery efforts ramp up. we have two reports this morning beginning with nbc's gabe gutierrez. gabe, good morning. >> matt, good morning. the state has now shut this place down, at least for now. we're learning new details about this facility that apparently had issues before. a 2016 inspection report found that it had failed to properly maintain its emergency generator and local firefighters apparently knew this facility well. this morning, a criminal investigation is under way to find out exactly what killed at least eight senior citizens found inside a sweltering nursing home in florida days after hurricane irma. >> the ac unit in this place

behind us under investigation was not working and they were utilizing portable ac units. >> there are well over 100 people being evacuated from a nursing facility. >> reporter: 158 residents evacuated from the rehabilitation center at hollywood hills, many in wheelchairs and stretchers, some suffering from dehydration and heat-related issues. the nearby hospital ordering a mass casualty protocol to deal with the large number of incoming patients. the fire department saying it got its first call at 3:00 a.m., a report of a heart attack, then another call an hour later reporting breathing problems then another at 6:15 firefighters started evacuating the facility as frantic relatives desperately tried to get answers. >> felt like 110, 115 degrees in there. >> reporter: many wondering why the residents weren't moved sooner with the area's heat index reaching a stifling 87 degrees overnight and a hospital with power literally across the street. >> i think it is an emerging

scandal of gargantuan proportions. >> reporter: in the past year alone, authorities say fire rescue crews have responded to the facility 127 times. >> in my opinion, that's excessive. >> reporter: the nursing home defending its staff and blaming irma for knocking out a transformer that powered the ac system. the facility's administrator saying "we are fully cooperating with authorities to figure out what went wrong." saying workers "diligently prepared for the impact of hurricane irma." adding "the center immediately contacted florida power and light and our staff continually checked on our residents' well-being." the mayor doesn't buy it. >> it was human failure on the part of the medical staff supervising these folks to not sound the alarm more broadly, more loudly way earlier. >> reporter: the deceased ranging in age from 71 to 99. among them, 84-year-old betty hibbert, and the oldest, albertina vega. >> why they didn't call me to

pick her, to go to pick her if they have any problem with the air conditioning? >> reporter: today with a high near 90 degrees and still so many without power across the state, an urgent push to protect florida's most vulnerable. the city of hollywood has inspected dozens of other assisted living facilities to check for similar issues. a small one was evacuated yesterday, so was a larger one in nearby north miami beach and matt and savannah, it turns out about 150 of the state's nearly 700 nursing homes are still without power. without full power. back to you. >> gabe gutierrez on this tragic story. gabe, thank you very much. >> crews are racing to restore power not only in florida but across the caribbean with so many islands suffered catastrophic damage gadi schwartz is in key west with the recovery efforts. good morning. >> reporter: goecod morning, afr eight deaths reported in the

florida keys, we know two of them happened in key west. a lot of these neighbors were covered in downed trees, now key west is digging out even as they run dangerously low on supplies. days after hurricane irma unleashed her fury on florida, the sweet sound of relief. military choppers arriving in a key west strip mall to a line of floridians desperate for the basics. >> i was so thirsty, thank god for the army. >> reporter: navy crews fresh from helping hurricane harvey victims in texas now providing relief in florida. what's it like to be out here helping out? >> this is why people join the navy, to do this sort of thing. it's an incredible feeling. >> reporter: people need water, power, fuel. cell service has been cut off to most of the island chain. >> everything's down and gone. everything's blocked, telephone po poles are down. >> reporter: the national guard out in force helping wherever they can.

>> it's devastation out here so we're taking it street by street. >> reporter: along the highway, neighbors feeding neighbors. >> it feels good to be able to help somebody else because this is what we do in the keys. we help other people. >> reporter: other parts of florida are suffering, too. bonita springs and middleburg still underwater. >> we're trying to move assets to those affected as fast as possible. >> reporter: in jacksonville, soggy and rotting houses. in north miami, water main breaks city wide prompting a boil-water ordnance. power crews still working on restoring electricity to millions while all hands pitching in for the cleanup. but as bad as the keys and other parts of florida have been hit, the caribbean took the brunt of the storm. on tortola, 90% of homes and businesses gone. families on antigua and barbuda struggling to find basic supplies. "there's nothing left" she says. loved ones of all types struggling. on st. thomas, an 18-hour curfew

in place and long food lines as the army national guard distributes ready-to-eat meals. the basics are all people can hope for now. >> it's there bad shape. >> reporter: after surviving the monster storm, people are grateful to be alive. >> there's nothing more valuable than your life. >> reporter: and add the next step now is a search of the waters here. officials say after reports that main may have been on board their boats when the storm hit, they have to send dive teams in to inspect all capsized vessels. matt and savannah, back to you. >> gadi, thank you very much. new developments in the special counsel investigation into russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. nbc news has learned the son of ousted national security adviser michael flynn is a subject in the investigation. according to current and former government officials, the inquiry into michael g. flynn is focused in part on his work for his father's lobbying firm.

legal experts say prosecutors could be using the younger flynn to pressure his father into divulging evidence about other high-level targets, including president trump. attorneys for michael flynn and his son declined to comment. new controversy surrounding the treasury secretary this morning. steven mnuchin asked for a government plane to use during his honeymoon vacation in europe earlier this year. operating such a jet can cost about $25,000 per hour. well, according to a treasury spokesperson, mnuchin considered using a military plane because he needed to access secure communications as part of his national security duties. the request was withdrawn after another secure communications option was identified during the secretary's extended travel. now to a bizarre accident on the tarmac at charlotte-douglas airport in north carolina. airport officials say an american airlines commuter plane was taxiing to the gate on wednesday when a tug driver slammed into the wig of the plane. the tug is that vehicle that's

used to push and pull airplanes. the driver was taken to a local hospital and is in stable condition. no one on the plane was hurt. some flights were delayed as a result of that accident. an investigation under way let's check our weather for the first time. hi. >> we're talking about heat that will be building and humidity will be building in florida where -- when they do not need it given that, of course, a lot of folks still without power. it's going to feel like it's near 100 degrees from daytona beach all the way down to key west today. that continues tomorrow, really, daytona beach, tampa will feel like 100, 99 in naples, key west looking at heat index of 99 degrees and it continues into saturday. here's the latest on jose. right now a category one storm, 510 miles south-southwest to bermuda. it brings it through between bermuda and cape hatteras but as we look at the difference between the european model and the united states model, the european model now brings it a little bit closer by wednesday to the coastline of the u.s.

the citi double cash card. double means double. /live we )re following breaking news - good morning, everyone. 7:26. i'm scott mcgrew. we're following breaking news a deadly crash on westbound 580 in castro valley. this happened around 4:30 this morning. you can see there are two big rigs involved in the crash and there was a car in the middle as well. we're learning the car slammed into one of those big rigs, then the second big rig slammed into both of the vehicles, pushing that car under the first semi-truck. the driver of the second big rig was killed, two other drivers suffered minor injuries. as you can imagine this is having a major impact on traffic coming into the tri-valley from hayward, the backup goes on for miles stretching well into livermore. let's check in with mike, it will take hours, mike, for people to get through here.

>> and the problem is that they have to off-load one of the big rigs involved, they have just brought noir trailer on to the scene, that will be possibly 10:00 a.m. we are about 15 minutes out of livermore and over through dublin and the castro valley y, the dublin grade. opposite direction also distracted by all of that activity. that's the problem in the tri-valley. in the peninsula we have a crash blocking two lanes of southbound 101 and millbrae avenue, you are jammed in both directions on the south portion of the airport. 280 by comparison very clear. looks pretty good in the weather department. we will have cooler temperatures today. we do start out with some clouds but we will get slooin later this afternoon, temperatures in san francisco and half-moon bay looking atp÷ 60s there, 70s for the inner bay and parts of the north bay and the interior valleys seeing those high temperatures up to 81 degrees this afternoon. looks pretty good and more of this weather into the weekend. we will continue to monitor that situation on 580. you can check nbcbayarea.com for

it is affecting nearly every adult in the united states. one question gaining some traction, if so many social security numbers have now been compromised, is it time to actually just do away with them all together? nbc's tom costello has been working the story since it broke. good morning to you. >> morning. the white and blue cards we all have were never meant to be a tax id or health care number, but now there is a good chance our numbers have all been stolen, and that makes us all very vulnerable. the worst hack of personal data in u.s. history. >> this concerns equifax. >> gets worse by the day. >> welcome to the equifax automated security freeze system. >> with the nation's three credit agencies swamped with calls from millions of americans trying to put a fast freeze on their credit reports. 143 million names, social securitys, dobs, addresses, drivers licenses, all stolen. >> what we've seen here is the most outrageous, the most

egregious example of a company not doing what it needs to do when it comes to protecting consumer information. >> in a usa today editorial, equifax ceo writes, we are devoting extraordinary resources to make sure this kind of incident doesn't happen again. meanwhile, those blue and white social security cards we all have were first issued in 1935 when fdr was president. they haven't changed much. but if they have all been stolen, is it time for a 21st century high-tech makeover. >> shouldn't be harder to get into my iphone than it is to hack my social security number. >> over the years, social security numbers morphed into a national identification number. >> our social security number for somebody like me is linked to our whole life. should we change that? absolutely. >> without one, you can't get a job, take out a loan, buy a house, file taxes, get into college or get health insurance. >> i think we can finally drive a stake through the heart of this system. social security numbers were never meant to be a secret.

never meant to be any security tool. now they probably never will be again. >> may be up to the financial industry to come up with secure ways to identify identities. constantly changing electronic numbers, two and three step authentications and even iris scans. is this going the wakeup call when the country decides it is time to move beyond social security numbers? >> it needs to be the wakeup call. we repeatedly, year after year, have these wakeup calls and we hit the snooze button. there's no more snooze buttons. >> here's the catch, our social security numbers make it easy to run fast credit checks, so customers can make impulse buys or sign up in store for the credit cards. if that changes, retailers could feel the impact very, very quickly. guys? >> a lot of folks are urging you to do a credit freeze. what does that mean? how do you do it? >> i've done it. here's what you do. go online or you call the

nation's three credit bureaus. yes, call them all. it is an automated service. they've been flooded with requests, so it does take time. you type in your state, your social security, numerical address, all of that, which means only businesses you already do business with can have access to your credit. criminals are locked out. but if a bank or company needs to run a legitimate credit check, like you need to take out a car loan or are applying to college, you need to unfreeze the report. don't forget it. >> does this cost anything, to freeze and unfreeze? >> equifax right now is freezing for free. some agencies charge $5 to $10 to freeze and unfreeze, which can be a hassle and it adds up. you have to remember your credit is frozen if you suddenly need the credit. the other thing, you have to remember your pin number, which they will give you when you freeze. write it down. put it in a secure place. because in a year or two or three, you need the pin number again to unfreeze.

==live== we continue our coverage of breaking news in the east bay good morning, everyone. 8:26. we're continuing our coverage of breaking news in the east bay. these are live pictures. it was an early morning deadly crash in castro valley that shut down all lines of westbound 580. this happened about 4:30 this morning. there are two big rigs that were involved in the crash. there was a car squeezed in the middle as well. we're learning the car hit one of the big rigs, then the second big rig slammed into both vehicles. the driver of that second big rig was killed. the two other drivers suffered minor injuries. let's check latest with mike and this massive backup. >> what you were just showing was them trying to off-load one of those trucks so they could clear it after they take the cargo off. it caused this huge backup. you can tell by the tail lights. it was way over here.

>> okay. rockets are powered by nozzles and flowing of different materials through them. you can have combustion, which is the fiery explosion you're probably used to. and you can have gold gas, where gas flows through the nozzle. i simply changed the shape of that nozzle to see if i could produce the most thrust, so the highest push for the lightest and smallest nozzle. >> did everybody get that? eleanor got the idea by watching videos of spacex rockets. but her passion for space travel started in 2011 when her parents took her to witness the end of an era. i got to watch the last space shuttle launch and that was kind of like, this is what i want to do. >> that was the moment? >> yeah, i want to go to space. i want to go to mars. >> eleanor is pretty grounded for someone with much lofty goals. she's one of five children in her family. they live in virginia. we invited her and her parents to speak with us at the hall of science in new york.

how did you get this extraordinary child? how did she get so interested in these incredible things? >> i guess we always let the kids do what they were interested in, what they follow heed? >> always have the opportunities, you know, around. they're sitting there. if you just give them the, you know, environment, they self-motivate. >> eleanor is certainly self-motivated. you made this dress? >> yes, i did. >> she makes clothing using a sewing machine or traditional loom. she's an accomplished violinist. she's learning russian. and she's a member of an award-winning robotics team. eleanor is a builder and a dreamer. when she grows up, she hopes to enter an orbit where currently, few women work. according to the bureau of labor statistics, only about 11% of aerospace engineers are women. why do you want to go to mars? >> because it hasn't been done

yet. it is our sibling planet. so the fact that we could maybe find something there, even if it is just bacteria, that's still life. >> she wants to go to mars. >> yes. >> she says she wants to go even if it is a one-way ticket. >> good for her. you have a different opinion, don't you? >> hopefully you don't have to think about that for a little while. >> right. >> with her sights set off world, eleanor still must face more earthly concerns like navigating her way through her first year of high school. despite her young age, it is pretty clear, eleanor has the right stuff. when you think of girl power, what does that mean to you? >> that really means that we can do anything. we can really dive into it and be the brains behind just about anything. >> what doesn't she do? >> did you get that about the nozzles and the trust? >> totally got it. >> incredible. >> she does everything. her family, all her brothers and sisters accomplished. >> wow. >> she's just one girl changing the world. >> great.

the vietnam war. if we can pack what happened and repack it, we may be able to have a civil conferencversation. >> is the begs wst way to tackl chronologically or do you look for an entry point? >> chronologically. let's find a place where all these diverse points of view -- my co-director and i went to vietnam, filmed north vietnamese soldiers and civilians, south vietnamese soldiers and civilians, along with all the americans here. >> there is a portion of this where you're interviewing >> there's a portion where you're interviewing americans who are pilots dropping bombs on a convoy along the trail and then you also interview two women who were involved with repairing that trail or driving those trucks and when we had that pilot, went on to become

the head of the air force, he didn't know that there were women down there that he was bombing, that he was strafing and so what happens is that if you can trianglate a war, you can understand it that much better. >> it's still raw. the subject of vietnam is what 50 years later basically. >> and everybody's not dealing with it so we went out to people across the political spectrum for support. we got an enlightened sponsor bank of america. this is going to be tough stuff but let's have something we can share with everyone. >> i was watching a show on tv on a very specific aspect of that war, the offense 1968. and watching it i realized even though i was alive during the vietnam war, i no less about it than i do for example about world war ii. >> that's exactly right and a lot of it is because it's unfinished business. it didn't end well for us.

world war ii is now the good war. how can that be? it's the worst war ever, but we have to deal with it because if we do deal with it we'll learn again how to speak to one another, how to evoke the better angels of our nature which is ha we want to do. >> you're just a little bit older than i am. >> i had a high draft number, so that was a big part of growing up. >> so do you attempt to answer the question, was it worth it, whose fault was it, where does the blame lie? >> we're asking all those questions and i think as we discover in particularly subjects about war there's pr than one truth. we want to lay it out from every perspective. if you think we should still be there fighting you can dpiebd room in the film. if you knew from the beginning this was the wrong thing and more importantly all the shades of gray in between, there's a place for you to watch and to make your own decision about it. >> i'm your biggest fan. i will be watching. ken burns, always good to have
