you would think these people might be upset, given that this was the hard core stance he had during the election, will they feel betrayed, abandoned? >> a cornerstone of his election. there's no question about that, but it's interesting, because knowing what we do about trump supporters, most observers would expect just outright rebellion from his base because of his major issue that they bonded on during the campaign. but get this, a recent national poll in early september by politico found that 60% of trump supporters endorse the d.r.e.a.m.ers staying in the united states compared with 33% who want the d.r.e.a.m.ers deported, so if we're going to believe the polls, most of his base is with the president on this d.r.e.a.m.er issue. >> so at least based on that poll, if his supporters do go with keeping daca, as the polls show, what's the hangup? >> and this is where it gets
7:49 am
really interesting, and the answer seems to be that a large number of conservative republicans in congress are more bent out of shape over this issue, about the d.r.e.a.m.ers than the trump voters are, which may be why the president has been flirting with congressional democrats on the d.r.e.a.m.er issue, a path to getting things done. >> definitely. so this might be a loaded question but what's next? >> yeah. look, it may be that the president is just using the democrats as bait for getting republican congressional support for d.r.e.a.m.er program. republicans they just don't want to be on the wrong side of this issue, but even if many oppose giving residential or maybe even possible citizenship opportunities to d.r.e.a.m.ers downstream, they may go along. so at the end of the day, although the republican leadership is embarrassed, by the whole thing, they may actually wind up developing a program for d.r.e.a.m.ers just so that they can be aligned with the president, even if they are so to speak johnnys-come-lately.
7:50 am
>> interesting. so if this happens, and there's this realignment of power sources, doesn't it kind of toss aside conventional wisdom about american politics? >> haven't we been tossing aside conventional wisdom for the last year or so? >> you're right. >> the alliance albeit temporary between congressional democrats and republican president donald trump it may be strange there's no question but it does remind us of an often used phrase, politics makes strange bedfellows, and even though the republican president and congressional democrats have very little in common, they do on this issue, and that may force the hand of congressional republicans. stay tuned. >> stay tuned indeed, as always larry gerston thanks to you. we'll have more news after the break.
