travel times. back to you. thanks, mike. breaking news out of new york this morning. live pictures as 17 people are hurt, seven critically after a tour bus and mta collided. these are live pictures from the scene. you see multiple emergency personnel on the scene. they have taken away the victims and they are investigating the cause of the crash, once again, of an mta bus and tour bus in queens, in new york. we'll continue to monitor that and bring additional information. now, breaking news as we follow this out of the south bay. a salvation army trailer goes up in flames. >> we have on the scene with what they are telling us so far. bob? >> reporter: good morning, laura and marcus. i just spoke with the battalion chief. this trailer full of donations caught fire in the back of a salvation warehouse here. they believe this fire is suspicious for a number of

reasons. one, they had a similar trailer loading dock fire six months ago at home goods they deemed suspicious, now this. i spoke to a manager of the warehouse, the building here at the salvation army. he says they believe maybe it was somebody trying to breakthrough the trailer to go through the donations and far source of lighting might have used a candle. this has been an ongoing issue. that might have happened last night. this fire started around 2:00 this morning. when the fire department got out here, they raised it to a second alarm. it took an hour to get it put out. it was around 3:00, then fully contained around 4:00. you can see what's left of the trailer. the trailer is not destroyed. you can see charring up the backside. fortunately, the fire never extended inside the warehouse. one of the sprinklers did its job. there was damage on the inside.

the inside of the building did not catch fire. it was the extension. no one was hurt. again, they are going to have an arson investigator come out to see what started the fire. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest there. 5:02. new this morning, san francisco police investigating an apparent double shooting. it happened on cap street between 17th and 18th in the mission. an officer at the scene said only two people were shot. there was no indication of the severity of their injuries. the shooter has not been arrested. happening today, new information expected to be revealed on a deadly officer-involved shooting in san jose. a press conference will be held later today after police shot and killed jacob do mminguez. he led police on an erratic chase earlier in the day.

they were trying to stop him for a felony on armed robbery. police were not in uniforms or marked cars. happening now in new york, president trump waking up at home. marcus? >> he spent the night at trump tower before a night of meetings today and a major speech tomorrow. tracie potts is live in washington this morning with a preview of what he's expected to say. good morning. >> reporter: marcus and laura, good morning. he's been quite critical of the unit united nations saying they didn't support democracy and whether our investment is worth it. now, he needs them on his side dealing with north korea. president trump headed to the u.n. for the speech tomorrow likely to talk about reform. mending fences. as a candidate, president trump called the united nations weak,

incompetent, not a friend of democracy. now, he needs the u.n. to deal with north korea. >> he's going to address these threats of north korea, iran, terrorism, global terrorism. the united nations has fallen short. he wants to motivate them. >> reporter: u.n. sanctions to stop the missile tests haven't worked. the trump administration says they need more time. >> get get all countries to enforce those sanctions. >> 90% of north korea's trade is being cut off. we have economically strangled north korea, at this point. if that doesn't work, general mattis will take care of it. >> reporter: the unpopular military option. >> the emphasis has to be on defense. >> getting china to cut off the oil. >> we should put more pressure on china. they can do more. >> can congress do more with democrats negotiating with the president? is that can's what america wants. >> he is pro-trump, for his own

interests. sometimes the interests align. >> reporter: some are okay with putting the border wall on hold right now. >> doesn't have to include the wall right now. >> reporter: keeping 800,000 young immigrants in the u.s. legally. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. developing this morning, unrest in st. louis. police say they arrested at least 80 people last night after a third day of protests. the demonstrations are in response to the acquittal of a white police officer charged in the shooting death of a black man. a crowd of 100 broke windows. some officers were slightly hurt. here is the mayor. >> the vast majority of protesters are non-violent, but, for the third day in a row, the nights have been -- the days have been calm and the nights have been destructive. >> police say some two dozen businesses in a popular suburban district has been vandalize zed.

>> 5:05. concerned friends and family say a private investigator was trying to crack down on a woman they saw. she was reported missing last week. san jose police believe there's no foul play involved. the woman left on her own. in mid-august she told her parents she was going camping. happening today, we hear from san francisco police about a crime in the twin peaks area. authorities say they have moved the meeting to st. john's church, due to recent crime. it runs from 5:30 to 7:30 tonight. we looked into crime in the twin peaks area. in august, two people killed a photographer. last year, on valentine's day, someone shot three people, killing two of them. new this morning, san jose city attorneys will meet next week to discuss hundreds of claims made by victims in the

creek flooding. close to 400 claims have been filed seeking more than $18 million in damages. the city will have to decide whether to pay out or reject each claim. it costs tens of millions of dollars to rehabilitate a 30-year-old tunnel. it will present findings next wednesday. if you are not familiar, it connects mill valley and -- cyclists and pedestrians. the press release say the project would cost $46.8 million, down from a 2010 estimate. psy cyclists say this is a key connecter and network from the golden gate bridge to naevada. this summit has been closed sinls 1980. it is south.

we'll get sunshine and temperatures at 64 degrees. we'll talk more about the temperature trend coming up. mike says there's a much clearer info for castro valley. >> didn't clear the roadway, bugging chp and trying to call them. before we got hold of them on the phone, they updated their info. about three miles east of castro valley boulevard. it's right where we see the slowing. there's a report of a couple vehicles. no crash. no injuries. keep it that way. you will slow down coming off it toward castro valley. this is the dublin that moves smoothly. we'll zoom out and show the entire area. that's the only slowdown. watch for the activity. there may be a traffic break to pull them over to the shoulder. meanwhile, travel times, no delays. that's great stuff.

it's 5:13. as you get ready to head out, we'll have clouds and breezy winds. as we look outside in fremont this morning, our temperatures start out in the mid-60s and heading to the mid-70s. not bad at all. we will have more weather like this, a chance of showers, then a warm up. i'll talk about all that in about five minutes. we are still tracking this. the only storm we see on the map. more details on chp. i'll sort them out coming up. 5:13. a group of oakland a's players throw their support behind a stadium. so far, there's no real

timetable on it. they are talking about it in downtown oakland. this morning, employment growth in silicon valley is growing. they looked at government data at 30,000 jobs in the second half of 2016. layoffs at hp and oracle may slow the growth. a low of 2.8% in may of 2017. more pressure on facebook. >> facebook executives may have to explain themselves to congress. >> the majority leader of the house intelligence committee would like to see facebook testify in the investigation of the russian interference. we knew they were cooperating with robert mueller. facebook told us that. mueller had warrants and had seen the facebook ads placed by russians during the campaign.

facebook says russians and russian companies placed $100,000 worth of targeted ads on facebook, not promoting trump, but gun control or race relations. it's believed the russians may have had specific data of who to target from election data. where they got that data is a major part of this investigation. facebook, meanwhile, have been trying to crackdown on fake news. that's a turn around for the company. immediately following the election, facebook founder, mark zuckerberg said fake news may have affected the election is a crazy idea. the bigger issue is silicon valley is on washington's radar. google for business practices silicon valley does not like that attention. several records were set. look out for the fed.

the feds may raise interest rates. it will be interesting to see what donald trump says about interest rate hikes. it does affect the market. he's been proud of the stock market. we'll see. >> the markets have had a good run. >> really good. happening today, people in florida starting to return to a normal life, as much as they can. now, nearly two weeks after hurricane irma hit the state. today, many students in miami return to school for the first time. the schools in florida keys and areas hit hardest will stay closed for another week. >> my brother lives in ft. lauderdale. they got power, but no wi-fi. i said, hey, you are back to the '80s. back to the coloring books and cross word puzzles. >> wow. okay. we are definitely in our technology and having to attract what's going on locally and all the hurricane activity that we have seen out there.

we are going to have a complete update on quwhat's happening in the tropics in 20 minutes. we get you out the door, looking live in san jose. mostly cloudy. here is a look at the temperature trend. the normal high temperature, 81 degrees. we are not going to get there today. it is going to be cooler than normal. we have mostly cloudy skies to start out. then by noon, we start to see more sun coming up. that will be the trend as we go through the rest of the day. the seven day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen, showing we will have a pleasant week and slight rain chances in the forecast. we'll get to that. looking at today's high temperature in east san jose, 78 degrees. a nice, breezy wind makings it easy to open up the windows and let fresh air in. it will be up to 77 in danville and oakland looking at a high of 70. 72 in san carlos. engleside, a high of 64 degrees. north bay, mid-70s, even lower

80s in santa rosa as well as navato. as we look at the forecast for heading out to school this morning in san jose, it will, once again, be mostly cloudy to start and 63 degrees as you are walking to school or driving and throughout the afternoon by the time the kids get out of school, at 73 degrees. as we look at the day planner for oakland, starts out at 62. maybe long sleeves or light jacket. later on today, it will be very comfortable. if you are going golfing in the trivalley today, great day for it. we will see very nice weather throughout the afternoon and mostly sunny skies. over the next several days, we will be tracking more cold fronts moving in. that could bring in a chance of showers on wednesday. we'll see that moving out by thursday and the temperatures will be dropping several degrees. that doesn't happen for very long. as we begin the first day of fall, the temperatures start to warm up. san francisco in the upper 70s.

for the inland areas, it is going to feel like summer for the first few days of fall, even after having cool temperatures for the last few days of summer. let's get that straight. we are going to have, also, a chance of rain in the forecast on wednesday. i'll keep you up to date on that. might focus on castro valley. >> things continue to evolve other there, shall we say? most of the bay, green sensors. castro valley, i'm trying to gather as much information from sources. west 580 off the dublin, we have this crash reported. yes, chp went from a disabled vehicle to it was a crash. it was two vehicles set there. no injuries. we are tracking activity and the categories differently now coming off the dublin interchange. i'm concerned. look at the camera off the dublin interchange. all the traffic westbound. moving smoothly over 580, 680

welcome back. it's 5:23 on your monday morning. the family of a georgia tech student shot and killed. 21-year-old scout schultz was a computer engineering student and president of pride alliance at the university. in a video taken by a witness,

schultz is heard yelling, shoot me. police asked him to drop a knife several times, but he wouldn't do it. when schultz stepped forward with the knife, the officer shot and killed him. >> he was slowly approaching the police officer. they got to a point where i guess the police officer couldn't back up anymore. as the guy approached more, the police officer fired the weapon and he dropped to the ground. >> schultz's family is asking questions why they failed to use non-lethal force. regulations ability the growing backlog of americans hoping to qualify for benefits. the social security administration revealed more than 1 million are waiting on average of two years. that's longer than the applicant will actually live. some were denied benefits the

first time around and having their case reviewed. we are taking a closer look at an alarming new poll. many parents are not confident their child east school is equipped to handle health issues. a study found at the university of michigan. parents were sure they could provide first aid for cuts and scrapes, but less certain about the school's ability to respond to an emergency like an asthma attack. 38% were concerned they could help the student with a mental health problem. are you planning to make a big purchase this year? if so, you are not alone according to a study by bankrate.com. 45% of americans were going make a large purchase like an airline purchase, smartphone. a plane ticket was the top selection. 17% of those surveyed said they are not at all likely to purchase a big ticket item this

mike is tracking a second crash in the east bay. >> i am. the first we are following is over here, following the slowing, visible from the wide shot. looking toward westbound 580, off the dublin interchange. excuse me, something in my throat. a crash in the road. minor injuries. this crash blocks southbound 680 at north main. we will track that out of concord. walnut creek as well. the bay bridge, the metering lights are on. back to you. >> thank you very much. staying on top of breaking news out of new york out of the queens area. they brought this 30 minutes ago. a tour bus and mta crash in queens. we learned in the last few minutes one person has, in fact, died. earlier, we reported 17 people

were hurt, seven critically. investigators are saying there may be more victims inside the debris of that crash. you see so many emergency personnel at the scene. we'll continue to follow it as it looks like the numbers keep updating this morning. 5:31 right now. now to a developing story in the east bay. the search is on for a man who ran over two police officers in san leandro after robbing a grocery store. it happened near washington avenue. >> it's a story we broke last night at 11:00. sharon is there. you have an update on those officers? >> reporter: that's right, laura and marcus. one officer was treated and released with non-life threatening injuries. it happened at the greenhouse mark marketplace shopping center. around 8:30, someone called

patrol officers to the parking lot. he was apparently carrying bottles. a female officer tried to contact him and he got into the car. >> the subject was able to start his vehicle, put it in gear and drive away with the officers still in the doorway of the vehicle. both officers sustained injuries from the vehicle running them over. both were at the hospital now, being treated. >> as soon as it backs up, that's when the guy officer got hurt. he fell on his knees. so, i don't know if he got run over or fell on his knees or what because he couldn't get up. >> reporter: the suspect drove off. police are still looking for him. they have not released a suspect description, but tell us he was driving a sedan. i spoke to a sergeant, the police, they are looking for surveillance video of the suspect and want anyone with information to call san leandro police department.

>> thank you, sharon. continuing coverage of tensions on the uc berkeley campus following the visit by conservative speaker, ben shapiro. a total of nine pem were arrested thursday when shapiro spoke on campus. most of the accused were carrying banned weapons close to the event, according to police. there is expected to be bigger protests for berkeley's free speech week scheduled to begin sunday. we are learning the student organization failed to reserve a venue on time. political commentator, former white house chief strategist steve bannon and ann coulter are scheduled to speak. the university says many speakers have not confirmed if they will attend. 5:33, a new warning for bart passenger this is morning. a quick-thinking woman says this

may have saved her from being mugged on a train. she was on a train from dublin to daly city when someone dropped a note on her lap. that claimed people were pointing guns at her. she never saw who dropped that note, but instinct told her to pretend as if she was having a seizure. >> i, like, if i fake a seizure or fake that i'm passing out, i'm not not complying, they could think i'm scared and reacting. >> wow. she says she's not sure if that threat was valid. bart is looking into the incident. nbc bay area covered several stories on crime on bart. here is what you need to know. officers are being deployed to hot spots. the agency is working to hire more officers. also, agents are a concern for the agency.

that problem is costing bart $25 million a year. video show whag may be a suspect in a bomb attack. the story is breaking news on friday morning. security video released by england's i-tv shot friday morning close to where police searched a home southwest of london. police have two men in custody. another developing story we are following, four boston college students recovering from an acid attack this morning. it happened in a french train station. a woman with a history of mental illness has been arrested. all four women have been releaseed from the hospital. two victims may need more treatment for their burns. a double threat, possibly a triple threat in the atlantic. >> hurricane jose is bearing down on new england as we monitor another storm.

a third storm is brewing. in ten minutes, kari hall will track the storm for us. >> it's been long enough since hurricane harvey hit texas. some of the half million cars flooded should be drying out and hitting the used car market, including here in california. they don't want dwrou get taken. this morning, we talk to kris sanchez who has been talking to officials to see what we should be looking for. >> do you take it to a professional? >> reporter: there are things you can do. sniff around for smell of mold or mildew and feel the upholstery to see if it is damp and look for discoloration. we talked with a service technician who gave us other things to look for as well. he says telltale signs include rust in the doorjambs, brittle, electrical wiring, corrosion under the carpeting in the trunk. on the surface, the car may be polished, detail and look fine.

the water can compromise the safety and electrical system and leave you stranded on the freeway. saving money is not worth your safety. >> you have to think about it like this, if it's too good to be true, it probably is. there's always a catch. your safety is not worth a few thousand dollars. >> reporter: according to car fax which keeps a vehicle's data base, they have 50,000 flooded cars on the road and 325,000 nationwide. in addition to sniffing for mold and feeling for dampness, take a test ride to make sure the lights work. check car facts to see where the car came from and if it was in the flood zone. for $100, you can get a professional inspection. it takes about an hour. i'm posting this information on facebook and my twitter feed because i know you may not have

a chance to look for a used car until this weekend and you may just be doing your research to go and pass the sniff test over the weekend. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> great advice. also, my car, the sniff test just smells like food the kids left from breakfast. looking over the bay, maybe having coffee and on the roadway. this is an issue. travel north from 680 where you typically see a build about this time anyway up to oakland where the crash may be blocking one lane toward 880. that is one area that is slowing. unusually slow for that section of the south bay. tri-valley to 580, chp tells us they have a disabled vehicle in the roadway. they can't must've it yet. that's west 580. that's causing all the slowing off the dublin bridge. i can see that from the live

it is 5:43. as you get ready to head out the door this morning, mostly cloudy on the monday. this is the weather we have from over the weekend. it continues today. as we go through the neighborhood of campbell, we will have clouds throughout the 11:00 hour as we see more sunshine. today, we are reaching into the mid-70s. it will still be comfortable for outdoor activities. throughout the week, a chance of rain in the forecast. that's coming up at 5:48. these travel times look great. look at the east shore freeway.

getting to 580 through oakland, the problem is in castro valley and dublin. we'll talk about the progress. 5:44. happening today, people in one san francisco neighborhood will talk to leaders about a string of recent assaults charging asian women. police released video of the attack and say a man would approach unsuspecting women and start punching them. several of the victims may have been followed from the muni stop. tonight's community meeting takes place at the san francisco empower. center. big changes could be coming to the way we measure students success. they are pushing to revamp the grading system. that includes several schools in the bay area. the idea is to eliminate a-f grading transcripts and gpa.

angry tirade became the genesis of melissa mccarthy's parody. when spicer mocked his appearance, it was funny for some, but a reminder spicer told untruths from the white house podium and he was acknowledging that. it was supposed to be funny. remember, the white house press secretary is more than a mouthpiece for the president. they represent the united states of america as a whole, thus the anger of spicer who said something that was not true, then had fun with it at the emmy's. >> we learned the united states might not exit the paris climate accord after all. the eu commissioner on the environment said u.s. officials told him, we may stay in the accord. the white house immediately denied that. the secretary of state said it might be true, if the u.s. can reach a deal. president trump has been ambivalent in the past. >> something could happen, we'll see what happens.

through february. pickets went on sale on friday but sold out within hours. everybody loves ice cream. >> if you go through it too fast, your brain freezes. >> i didn't see anyone eating ice creme. they were taking pictures of the art. i don't know. do you get to eat? >> it's all ice cream. >> okay. you just get to look at it. as we look at the weather this morning, we have been watching what's going to happen as far as the tropics, the atlantic. we have been talking hurricane irma, hurricane harvey, now we have hurricane jose and hurricane maria. there's a lot going on here. now, hurricane jose has wind speeds of 85 miles an hour and is just off the east coast. over the next several days, we'll be watching this, the potential to turn up waves for new england area. it doesn't look like it is going to make a direct hit in the northeast, but it will be

uncomfortably close over the next several days. watching hurricane maria out there moving over some of the same islands that were devastated by hurricane irma. this is now a category 2 and expected to strengthen to a category 4 hurricane as it moves very close to puerto rico. could make a direct hit on that island, then continue over the next several days as a category 4 and moving into the bahamas as we head into the weekend. we'll continue to watch that. as we look at our weather, looking at the high temperatures reaching the mid-70s inland and as you get ready this morning, it will be a great day for something light like long sleeves and sunglasses as those temperatures warm up. it will be bright and sunny. looking at the school day forecast for oakland, we'll have clouds throughout much of the morning and reaching to the upper 60s as the kids head out of school. i'll have a look at the seven

day forecast. mike is tracking three incidents on the road. >> three specific shots with a lot of slowing. overall, mostly green sensors. that's great to start the week. in san jose, we have improvement. cleared northbound 101. the freeway is slow, focusing on that interchange with 680, 280 and north 101. that's the worst spot with the silicon valley. west 580 up dublin and over to the road. that disabled vehicle stuck in the roadway, waiting for the toe truck to get there, a locked axel. they cannot move that until it's on a flat bed. the second crash of the morning, southbound 680, that's backed up on concord. check with waze to get around that. you should be able to if you can. taylor boulevard might be a good option. the east shore freeway.
