three people rushed to the hospital when a fire breaks out at a san francisco home. breaking right now, three people rushed to the hospital when a fire breaks out in a san francisco home. plus, we are tracking two breaking international stories. frantic search is under way after a 7.1 earthquake hits mexico. hurricane maria made land fall in puerto rico as well. the u.s. territory fears the storm may be catastrophic. so much going on now on this wednesday morning. good morning to you, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm marcus washington. of course we have a lot of those stories we are talking about, but we want to head toefr kari to look at the forecast. >> a few spotty showers this morning before you head out the door, especially in the north bay as we are tracking the rain well to the north of us right now. all clear and dry across the bay

area and a cool start. i want to show you the hour-by-hour outlook. it shows potential of light rain moving through as we go to later this morning and early afternoon ahead of a cold front that will bring in chilly temperatures for the next couple days. i'll talk more about the rain and what to expect for the weekend. let's check the roadways. it's 4:30 but we are seeing a couple issues on the road starting off with something that has the potential to cause delays northbound 680 after arthur road. all lanes were originally blokd. they have opened the slow lane. it involves multiple vehicles. the speed sensors aren't picking up too many delays but they have no estimated time when all lanes are expected to clear, which could bring major delays. there's another crash along southbound 280 at ocean drive. ahead of that, we see an

additional crash. we are seeing slowing in that area. over to you. >> thank you very much. we are covering breaking news out of the east bay. one person died after a fire in oakland. the fire department says it was at a four-story apartment building near the harrison street off ramp at 580. the fire was contained to one unit. the rest of the people inside the building have been forced from their homes. we have a crew on the way to the scene. we'll bring you the latest as soon as we get it. more breaking news. here in the bay area, several members are hurt when their home catches fire. >> we are outside that home. do we know what may have started this fire? >> reporter: laura, right now, we have no information. you can see this is the debris that was removed from the home. the house is boarded up behind me. all we know is one man is in critical condition with severe burns. he was hospitalized. two other people, including a

17-year-old suffered moderate burns, they were hospitalized as well thchlt is the 300 block of harvard street in san francisco. the call came in at 2:00 a.m. the fire crews arrived and the home was engulfed in flames. the man is in critical condition. the adult female who may be the 17-year-old mother was also able to escort herself out of the residence on her own. she did suffer moderate burns and smoke inhilation. the crews were able to knock out the fire. the cause is being investigated. coming up, more on the condition of this family and we'll keep you updated. live in san francisco, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. another breaking story we are watching right now out of the caribbean as hurricane maria just made land fall a short time ago in puerto rico as the category 4 storm, which was downgraded overnight from a

category 5. this is video just in from the streets of san juan. keep in mind, this is not the most destructive winds. the eye of that storm is actually to the south of this location you are seeing here. at its peak, some places saw winds up to 155 miles an hour. let's take you to the ground in puerto rico. gabe gutierrez just filed this report. >> reporter: the situation here is dire. we have been seeing pounding winds and howling rain throughout the morning. san juan is getting hammered by maria. authorities have been practically begging people throughout the past few days to take shelter and evacuate flood prone areas and wooden structures. we sought shelter in a concrete structure. this is a scene of utter chaos. the time to evacuate is over. this is the strongest storm to hit puerto rico in nearly a century. >> meteorologist kari hall has

been tweeting updates on hurricane maria throughout the week. our twitter feed is a great resource for breaking news. you can find us @nbcbayarea. now, to breaking news out of mexico where rescue efforts continue following the deadliest earthquake in decades. >> the quake struck near mexico city on tuesday. here is the latest at this hour. the death toll, 217 according to mexico's civil defense agency. at least 25 bodies have been recovered from a school. the search is on for survivors and is getting more intense as the hours go on. mexico declared a state of disaster. this comes less than two weeks after a magnitude 8.1 quake hit killing nearly 100 people. >> damian trujillo is headed to mexico city. he will be reporting live from the earthquake zone later today. pushing for no hate in

castro valley. some community members are planning to march this morning in front of a canyon middle school. this is after graffiti was found on the truck. swastikas were drawn on the truck and the rear window smashed while parked. this was at the middle school. they targeted jewish and african-american communities. so far, no suspects. they have increased patrols around all castro valley schools. >> coming up, making a little extra money around the holiday season may not be as ready available as a major retailer scaling back on temporary holiday workers. >> you could have a new device to help assist with your every day life. the new wearable option amazon is working on.

and i'm an arborist with i'pg&e in the sierras. the drought in california has killed trees on a massive scale. any of those trees that fail into power lines could cause a wildfire or a power outage. public safety is the main goal of our program. that's why we're out removing these hundreds of thousands of hazard trees. having tools and technology gives us a huge edge to identify hazard trees. my hope is that the work we're performing allows that these forests can be sustained and enjoyed by the community in the future. together, we're building a better california.

good morning, i'm court any reagan at cnbc headquarters. wall street could start the day with more green arrows. stocks rose with the dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 closing with record highs. the central bank is not expected to hike interest rates, but should finalize plans to start slowly shrinking the $4.5 trillion balance sheet. the nasdaq up six to 6461. walmart isn't planning any large scale hiring for the holiday season this year. instead, they will offer extra

hours to current workers just like it did last year. however, the largest u.s. private employer will add temporary workers at the distribution center. amazon is working on the first wearable device, smart glasses. the financial times report they would allow people to call on amazon's digital system, alexa, anytime, anywhere. you need a smartphone nearby but you won't have to wear headphones to hear alexa. get this, the glass transmits sound through your skull inner ear. this has been unproven. the glass device and snap chat spectacles haven't taken off. >> thanks. it's 4:40. happening in marin county, a landfill opens in navato. it will capture all the gases being released and turn it into energy rather than flairing it.

it will receive 8 megawatts of power to power homes. this will lower greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2020. what's truly in a name? the decision to rename the plaza in san francisco. plus, kari has the full forecast. spotty showers. meantime, it's dry. as we look outside right now in fremont and checking out the temperature trend for today, a lot of clouds here and cooler temperatures. it will be nice later this afternoon. we'll talk about what's ahead coming up next. we haven't seen major reports along 880 in oakland, but check out this live shot. we are starting to see a build up of the early morning traffic. i'll have updates on the 680 crash in a bit.

good wednesday morning to you. we take a live look now at san francisco. as you can see, you can make out a few cars on the road. thank you so much for joining us this morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. 4:44 right now. moving along. the weather seems to be cooperating. >> seems to be good. we are going to have a little rain in the forecast, it's going to bring in cooler temperatures once again. we are going to be watching the radar as we go through the next several hours. the rain is well to the north of us, around eureka and ewe kaya

in the next couple hours. before it makes its way into the bay area. don't expect really heavy downpours. as we go through 7:00, it does show a few of the hit or miss showers, especially along the coastline and in the north bay and as we go through the rest of the day, showers moving into sonoma county. we could see that moving into the peninsula and parts of the east bay. here we are at 11:00 in the morning, chances of rain in the forecast, but not everyone will see it. as you check out the seven day forecast at the bottom of the screen, you will see that we will, after today, have a dry forecast, then temperatures warming up. by 10:00 tonight, we start to see the clouds rolling to the south. behind that, drier air and also cooler temperatures. as you step out the door right now, we have upper 50s to lower 60s and heading into the mid-70s for much of the south bay up to 75 degrees in east san jose and

gilroy, 76 degrees. 76 in danville. oakland, 69 degrees. for the peninsula, 69 in san mateo. san francisco and the mission district, 67 today. mid-70s for the north bay. as you are getting dressed this morning, make sure you grab the bell in case you get caught in one of those showers. it will be a good day for pants because it is cool to start and this afternoon won't be all that warm. you will be more comfortable with shorts heading into the weekend. keeping you up-to-date on hurricane jose, downgraded to a tropical storm, still bringing in a lot of gusty winds. you can see the clouds spreading over new york, connecticut and boston. it could bring in the potential of five to six inches of rain with gusty winds and high swells along the coastline. this will wonder out there in the same area the next couple days and may help steer must remember away from the u.s. this is something we will be

watching. now wind speeds at 155 miles an hour. now, making land fall on puerto rico. moving toward the turks and caicos as a category 4, it will stay just north of the dominican republic and curve to the north, once again, influenced by the remnants of jose over the next several days. as we bring you back home, we'll have the chance of showers today in san francisco. some breezy winds tomorrow. look at how cool it will be as we officially begin fall. warming up next week, upper 70s in the forecast there. then, just because it's fall doesn't mean we are done with the hot weather. look at the inland area. this is going to be hot for the middle of next week. heading over to vianey arana, what's going on? >> i have been enjoying the cooler afternoon. we have a couple trouble spots on the road. san francisco, i was getting a couple reports about a couple accidents.

the one we were really looking for is northbound 680 at arthur road. the good news is, it looks like they have managed to clear the lanes. the slow lane is the only one open. at this hour, we are not seeing too many cars, so it's not causing too many delays yet. as i was mentioning san francisco southbound 280, two fender benders on ocean drive. we were starting to see slowing in that area. no major accidents to report at this time. a quick check of your drive time, northbound 101 to 85, 19 m minutes. 280 to highway 101. at the bay bridge toll plaza, no metering lights on yet. back to you. >> thank you. happening today, a u.s. coast guard officer heads to milita military court to face charges in the death of his 3-year-old daughter. >> petty officer jimmy bar low faces four counts of child

endangerment. he failed to seek medical care for his daughter. she died in alameda in 2011 in the care of his girlfriend, now wife, holly. they ruled the death a homicide. for six years, alameda county prosecutors never filed charges. it wasn't until after the coast guard filed charges and our investigative unit started asking questions. then they filed a felony child abuse charge against holly. eden's death was a result of an accidental fall down a flight of stairs. we'll have the details from the pretrial hearing tonight at 6:00 on the newscast. she has been doing extensive reporting. you can watch the reports on www.nbcbayarea.com. if you have a tip for investigative unit give us a call, 888-996-tips or e-mail us. a follow up on this wednesday morning, san francisco

supervise zers unanimously decided to rename justin herman plaza. he led the city's redevelopment agency in the 1960s, where he constructed a proposal that got rid of low income housing. compared to what is now a $64 billion price tag, the latest overrun is a drop in the bucket. the high-speed rail authority approved an extra $50 million to cover construction and environmental review costs. the money will come from existing funds. coming up, nbc bay area responds. a woman's recheck up costs more than 2$200. nbc bay area responds, next. health officials in los angeles county, declaring a hepatitis aout break. ten people have been affected so

news. first, we want to get to the forecast as you head out the door. >> starts out nice and dry, baa slight chance of rain late morning and early afternoon. i want to make sure you are prepared for that. otherwise, we are looking at mostly clear skies and cool temperatures as we get ready for a day that will bring in that potential of some rain. as we get a look at the radar, that rain is now up around eureka, well north of the bay area. high temperatures reach the mid-70s for the north bay. oakland, 69 degrees. cooler than normal temperatures with breezy winds and mostly cloudy skies. we'll talk about that. vianey arana is tracking what's happening early on the roadways. >> we have a couple minor fender benders and the rollover in san francisco. an zentd along 580 near the oakland area. we are not seeing major
