discovered credit card skimmers in six gas pumps you are looking at now. if you are not familiar, they are electronic devices that someone illegally installs behind the credit card slot. you insert the card, pay for gas. it seems like a normal transaction but it's not. that device is collecting your debit or credit card data. they use that to make fraudulent purchases. this is a huge problem worldwide, costing $2 billion a year in fraudulent charges. what to do if you think you might have been a victim. if you have been using this gas station recently. check your financial statements on a regular basis. cnbc reports that your liability will be limited to just $50 if you report the fraud, the unauthorized charges within two days and file a report with antioch police. they are encouraging you do that if you think you have been

story of the young girl trapped in the rubble is, in fact, false. mexican authorities say the girl who was identified as freida never existed. everyone in that school has been accounted for. nbc bay area's damian trujillo is in mexico city and will share stories he witnessed firsthand. that's coming up for you at 5:30. the devastation in mexico is causing many to reconsider earthquake safety here. several gathered to ask questions to an expert panel. one says caltrains has been working hard to be better prepared for the next big disaster here. >> over 22200 bridges across the state. a lot here in the bay area. >> panel members admitted more work needs to be done. one representative reminded the audience, it gave some people a

few extra precious seconds. it may roll out next year. 5:06, happening now. we are tracking hurricane irma, which is currently a category 3 storm. it's bearing down on the turks and caicos. the island is supposed to be spares from the direct hit. maria is forecast to veer off to the atlantic and miss the united states. in puerto rico, at least two deaths are being reported from hurricane irma. the true scope of the disaster may not be known for days. right now, the entire island is without power. many are starting to run out of supplies. >> i knew it was going to be bad because electricity and infrastructure is really old. wu knee it was going to be affected. >> fuel is scarce. communication is a problem because cell phone service is unreliable. the last remaining lawsuits tied to the crash four years ago

has been settled just before trial. the trial was scheduled to start today. it involved a dental sur january that makes her unable to work. the attorney announced the settlement. the terms were not disclosed. all claims made by the 307 people on board that plane were settled prior to going to trial. live now, officials could decide to close the bridge to traffic during major events. back in july, a northbound lane was closed for the san francisco marathon. bridge officials tell us that's rare because their goal is to keep the lanes open and traffic moving. that's the current policy and the board of directors are likely to keep it intact today. right now at 5:07, on your friday morning, we walk out the door, it's all clear and we have cool temperatures in parts of the north bay. we are right now at 42 degrees in napa. 51 in san jose. 52 degrees in livermore. if you are planning to go

golfing today, half-moon bay or relaxing there, we will have clouds in the morning, temperatures in the upper 50s and highs up to 62 degrees. going hiking in the south bay, lots of sunshine, a mix of sun and clouds and by this afternoon, in the low 70s. a very nice way to start out the first day of fall. how is the fall traffic looking? >> two minor accidents so far, which is great. we were seeing slowing in the tri-valley and still seeing that now at this hour. this crash is right before san ramon before the eastbound side. it's not causing delays in that area. it is cleared to the side. slowing on the westbound 580 from grant line road. a 24 minute drive time. southbound 680 from 580 to vargas road, 11 minutes. bridge drive times are smooth. westbound 80 to the bay bridge, about eight minutes.

limit opioids to fight back against the national epidemic. it will place limits on powerful painkillers. at stores nationwide, people filling prescriptions will be limited to a seven-day supply. the company plans to boost funding for addiction counseling and safe opioid disposal programs. >> i think our customers are going to be heartened by it. as they become addicted, will eliminate human suffering. >> they say the limits take effect in february. overnight, we researched opioid addiction. data isn't easy to find. california reports over 4,000 emergency room admissions related to opioids in 2014. cdc's numbers go back to 2015. nationally, 33,000 people died nationwide in 2015.

half of all deaths involve a prescription. a big day for apple. today, the iphone and i watch will be released. don't expect to see the lines that usually form. kris sanchez is live at the apple store. kris, what is the reason people aren't expected to go out and buy the iphone 8s today? >> reporter: first of all, you can't get them unless you preordered them. that's what a lot of folks have done. this time around, a lot of folks are, perhaps, holding out for the iphone x. we'll talk about that in a moment. i want to show you the line. one young man here is first in line. he is last in line. he preordered and is here to pick it up. we are going to talk to him in a minute. we were on the apple campus when the iphone 8 was unveiled looking different with the glass and aluminum outside.

oakland. for the peninsula, daly city, 65 degrees and redwood city, 70. outer 63 degrees and the north bay upper 70s for the most part. looking at the school day forecast. as you are packing up the school bag for the kids early this morning, before they get up, it will be cool throughout the morning. make sure they are wearing long sleeves and pants. warms up nicely. the day planner for oakland, we only see those temperatures in the 60s after that cool start and stays breezy with a lot of sunshine. if you are making weekend plans to head to santa cruz, expect those highs this weekend in the mid-70s. still cool today. we will be warming up over the next several days. upper 70s next week for san francisco. today, 73 for the inland areas, but 93 next thursday. get ready for that. vianey arana tracking what's happening on the roadways. >> i heard you mention earlier you turned on the heater in your

car. so did i. i had to clear the windshields. now we'll see how much of the electric bill goes toward the heating bill. we are seeing a couple fender benders out there. however, chp reported the traffic collision after broadway. it looks like it's involving four vehicles. maybe one of the cars is hitting the center divider and may be blocking one of the lanes. you can see, right now, the speed sensors picking up the slowing in that area. it could be causing delays the next 30 or 40 minutes. also a crash along southbound 101 and capitol expressway. a shoulder is blocked in this area. speed sensors not picking up slowing, but as soon as they clear that out, we should be okay in terms of traffic back up. a live look in the south bay for san jose. plenty of meters out on the road with the nice, warm coffee to go. back to you. >> that sounds good, thank you.

city where you see dozens, if not hundreds of people helping to rescue people from the rubble after that massive earthquake in the city and throughout the region there. already 60 people have been pulled from the rubble that was caused as that earthquake hit mexico city and surrounding areas. we'll have more coming up at 5:30. also, damian trujillo is there in mexico city. it is 5:25 right now. developing now, facebook ceo, mark zuckerberg is talking ability the social network role in the 2016 election. he says facebook will release 3,000 ads created by fake accounts linked to russia. this is part of an investigation in russian interference with the election. in a facebook live video, zuckerburg says the company is working with the u.s. government. >> today, i want to share the steps we are taking to protect election integrity and make sure facebook is enforced for good in

ladies, let me know if you get what i'm saying with that one. a couple accidents showing up on the traffic maps. for now, chp seems like the biggest impact is along southbound 101 after broadway. it was a multiple vehicle crash. one of those vehicles is still blocking the center lane. it looks like it hit the center divider, may have spun out and now is causing delays just after broadway, along southbound 101. we were seeing earlier delays. now it seems to be getting worse as they work to clear out multiple vehicles off 101. if that is your morning commute, expect delays. we are seeing slowing along bridges. westbound 580, toward the richmond bridge, 7 minutes, toward the bay bridge, 10 minutes. why is that? well, the metering lights are on, folks. already at this hour, 5:30, the metering lights came on. bumper to bumper. back to you. >> thank you. it is 5:32.

we are monitoring developments in mexico. rescue efforts continue in the wake of the deadly earthquake. we are just learning the rescue attempt of a young girl who people were calling freida wasn't real. the mexican navy is investigating where the reports first started. this morning, we know the number of dead stand at 273. there are still stories of hope emerging. 60 victims have been rescued from the rubble of some of the many collapsed buildings. at the same time, the number of deaths, sadly, is expected to go higher. >> damian trujillo has been on the ground in mexico since wednesday. he reported alongside the volunteers working around the clock to find survivors. >> he joins us with the non-stop rescue. >> reporter: these volunteers have been here throughout the night. they have been here for the last couple of days. there's no rest for the weary. they are ready to ship out again. they use these motorcycles to

deliver goods to the rescue operators out here. it's an endless show of solidarity in mexico city. reports of more deaths but there are rescue efforts around the clock. the military says they will not sleep or rest until every last person who needs to be rescued is. dozens of buildings collapsed. mexico city does have an early warning system. the epicenter was not in an area where there are sensors to detect the quake. otherwise, they would have received a one minute warning before the earth started shaking. the alarms went off as the ground was already moving. the rescue efforts will continue as the region comes together as one. again, the motorcycle operators are getting ready deploy one more time to give the rescuers what they need. damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> damian is tweeting videos and

renew their application. earlier this month, when president trump signed an executive order rescinding daca, people have been rushing to renew their documents before the october deadline. the city will pay for all of the $495 fee. the money comes from the mayor's office of civic engagement and immigrant affairs. happening today, senator bernie sanders and gavin newsom will speak to a group. senator sanders is expected to talk about the legislation he is pushing to expand medicare to everyone. sanders will visit city college to highlight the enrollment after they started offering free tuition for san francisco residents. happening today, thousands of tourists won't be getting that full san francisco experience for an entire week. the iconic cable cars won't be running. >> "today in the bay" started working the story.

new this morning, you pount out, this is about something called a gearbox. what is that and why is it important? >> reporter: that's correct. we are here in downtown san francisco on california street. normally, you see a line of cable cars, but they are gone. here is why. the last update was in the 1980s. starting today, it's time for an upgrade. yesterday, we got a behind-the-scenes look at how the cable cars run. the white box is a gearbox. the cables move underground, but the gearbox powers the motor that keep the wheels turning. it is essential to the operation. the gearboxes are more than 30 years old. they had new gearboxes custom built for our cable cars at a cost of close to $3 million. they will be installed starting today. part of what they are trying to do is take advantage of modern

technology to improve the system. the new gearboxes have special sensors that monitor vibration and noise. that helps engineers detect minor issues. another important factor is public safety. >> we are trying to be predictive in terms of our maintenance here in replacing it before the entire thing fails. if it fails, the cable stops, you have service interruption. possibly an incident where someone could get hurt. >> reporter: san francisco is starting with just the california line. these cable cars will be gone until friday. those of you who are coming into san francisco or use the cable cars to commute, a bus service will run in its place. those of you visiting the city, do not fear, the other cable cars are running on the other line. you will still have a chance to ride the iconic able cars.

>> true tourism, thanks a lot. another reminder, the bart station is closing this weekend and next weekend. they are closing the station to test trains on the track before opening the silicon valley extension. it will connect the warm springs station to san jose. the first faze is expected to open in 2018. bart will provide free bus rides during the closure. an update on the crash at southbound 101. i want to get into it. chp issued a sig-alert. this is southbound 101. looks like three lanes are blocked and it is stop and go traffic at this point. crews are arriving on scene to clear it out. a sig-alert has been issued in this area. the speed sensors are picking up delays at 5:39 this morning. if this is the early morning commute, get a head start. seeing slowing on the bridges,

accident. we are looking to see if anybody has been injured. three lanes are blocked. >> thank you very much. 5:46 right now. you can watch the raiders this sunday night on nbc bay area. that airs here at 5:30 in the comfort of your own home. new this morning, a blow for san francisco bay's uber will no longer be available in london. the transportation agency will not renew it citing the approach to hiring drivers and how it relates to safety. the license will expire at the end of the month. they have 21 days to appeal. london leaders are caving in to groups to seek to restrict consumer's choice. the name fisherman's wharf is about to take on new meaning. starting tomorrow, commercial fishermen can sell their freshly caught fish from their boat. the hook is to consider it a

farmer's market for fish. whole and fileted fish are sold. it's part of a one year pilot program. fishermen have been banned from selling their fish at the wharf since 2000. judging from those statistics, it looks like buyers may have choices. this is from the report several years ago. they say more than 3 million pounds of fish are caught each year by the commercial fishermen at the wharf. they surpass $1 million each year and typically it includes rock, cod, alba core, tuna, halibut and crab. >> looking for something to do? how about jumping around in this. it is the world's largest bounce house and it's all blown up in santa rosa. it's a 10,000 square foot inflatable structure with a lot to do inside. lots of jumping and running around. the event center is open to the

waiting for the sun's arrival. it will be the first full day of fall later this morning. happening now, a plea for help from santa clara police. they are trying to track down a peeping tom. he was caught on this surveillance photo. he's been peeping into homes near homestead road near santa clara central park. police are looking for a woman wanted for stealing from a non-profit bookstore. they posted these photos on facebook asking the public for help. the woman is seen stealing books off the store shelves. the suspect took off with more than $1,000 of children's literature. the store is operated by the pittsburgh art foundation and donate the books to schools throughout the contra costa county. a dangerous recall to tell you about.

13,000 spin out fireworks are being recalled. they were sold individually and by the case that stands nationwide from october 2016 to july, 2017. the company has received one incident of it tipping over. fortunately, no one was hurt. a stunning revelation. tests conducted on nfl star, aaron hernandez says he had a brain disease, cte. not only that, doctors say it was one of the worst cases they have ever seen. doctors say the football star had early brain apathy and other damage. cte is associated with other cognitive changes. hernandez committed suicide in april serving a life sentence for murder as we previously uncovered, the disease was found in nfl players and the link to repeated head trauma.

shocking video to show you this morning, atlanta police officers jumped into action after an early morning firy crash. body cam shows the moment they arrived on scene. two people were trapped inside as the fire spread underneath the hood of the car. the driver was unconscious. the passengers screaming for help as the flames moved in closer. officers had to smash the window to pull everyone out safely. both the driver and the passenger are in serious condition this morning. developing overnight. protests continue in the streets of st. louis. hundreds marched outside a billy joel concert. the demonstrations came after the acquittal of a former police officer who was accused of killing and shooting a black man. over the past couple weeks, dozens of people were arrested after demonstrations escalated to violence in the city. the search continues for the person responsible for painting
