francisco. huge difference as we go through the day. it's going to reach the upper 70s inland and 65 degrees in san francisco. san jose up to 73 degrees. we'll talk about the weekend forecast. vianey arana is tracking two crashes for your commute. >> unfortunately, they are impacting the commute. everything looks okay except when we zoom in here. sig-alert, southbound 101, south of broadway. multiple vehicles involved. chp is reporting one could be on fire. we are hoping there are no injuries involved. they did dispatch ambulances but our assignment desk is looking into how severe it is. three lanes are blocked. delays not just on the southbound side. on the northbound side, we are seeing yellow, which means stop and go, typically. cars stop on the opposite side slow down to see.

another crash for the bay bridge, this is causing delays. the good news for this one, they are working to move it to the side to pick up the speed along the bay bridge. all the details coming up in a bit. >> busy morning. a warning to drivers in the east bay. check your debit or credit cards, you might have been scammed. >> skimmers were found at a contra costa gas station. bob redell is there with what you need to know to protect yourself. >> reporter: good morning. this fraud took place at that valero gas station behind me, 101 somersville boulevard. it's the intersection with delta fare boulevard in antioch. antioch police discovered credit card skimmers in six gas pumps you are looking at. if you are not familiar, they are electronic devices that someone illegally installed behind the credit card slots.

you will insert your card, pay for gas. it will seem like a normal transaction, but it won't be. that skimming device is collecting your credit card or debit card data. cnbc reports this is a huge problem worldwide costing $2 billion a year in fraudulent charges. what to do if you think you are a victim. check financial statements. if you find anything irreally lar, a fraudulent charge, your liability is limited to 50 dl$5 it is reported within two business days. detectives are trying to figure out who installed these illegal devices. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. controversial commentator says he is on his way to the bay

area for free speech week in berkeley. he posted this picture on facebook within the last hour and a half saying he is ready for free speech week traveling from miami to sfo. he posted this video showing people tearing down posters promoting his upcoming appearance at cal. you may remember, he says he was supposed to speak at uc berkeley earlier this year. his speeches were canceled when protests turned violent. he offered to tip in $300,000 to cover security during free speech week. it is expected to start on sunday and run through wednesday. a student group called the berkeley patriots says yiannopolous is just one. steve bannon and ann coulter are expected to speak.

they have not confirmed if they will show up. we have the schedule on www.nbcbayarea.com. a developing new story this morning. new threats from iran. at a military parade, iran president says the country will strengthen its missile capability saying we seek no one's permission to defend our land. that announcement comes as tensions escalate between the u.s. and north korea over nuclear weapons. this morning, president trump tweeted kim jong-un is a madman saying the north korean leader will be tested like never before. "today in the bay's" edward lawrence joins us live in washington tracking the developments for us. these threats have people on edge this morning. >> reporter: a lot of countries on edge this morning. this seems to escalate the rhetoric around the world. everybody watching to see what happens. tensions have been ratcheted up. this is spencely personal with the conflict with north korea,

the president calling the north korean leader names and the north korean leader attacking the president's competency. tensions between north korea and the world reached a critical point. north korea says they may test a hydrogen bomb over the pacific ocean in response to donald trump's united nation's speech to destroy the nation. >> the president said it, members of the team said it. we don't want war. that's the last thing anyone wants. >> reporter: the north korean leader and president trump directly trading insults toward one another. kim jong-un called the president deranged and said he will pay dearly dearly for the threats. >> rocketman is on a suicide mission for himself. >> reporter: the president signed a new executive order with the toughest economic sanctions to date. >> it will cut off sources to revenue to fund north korea's

rescued and evacuated. our live crew is heading to the scene. we will bring you the latest as soon as we get it. marcus? >> we are tracking the latest developments out of mexico. a lot of volunteers are out there trying to help. so many people are going to mexico city. others traveled outside the city to help other affected areas. there are stories of hope emerging from the rubble of the devastation in mexico. rescuers have found more survivors, at least 60 since tuesday. [ speaking foreign language ] >> cheers of joy as many people are pulled from collapsed buildings. this morning, the number dead stands at 273 and adding a headache to that, a story that transfixed mexico of a young girl trapped in the rubble of a collapse is false. mexican authorities say that girl who was identified as freida never existed.

everyone at that school has been accounted for. damian trujillo is in mexico city this morning. he will share stories he is witnessing firsthand. that's coming up live at 6:30. happening now, we are tracking the path of hurricane irma, which is currently a category 3 storm. it is bearing down on turkss and caicos recovering from hurricane irma. that is supposed to be from a direct hit. maria is forecast to veer off from the atlantic and miss the united states. in puerto rico, at least two deaths are reported from maria. the scope of the disaster may not be known or days. right now, the island continues to be without power. many are running out of supplies. >> i knew it was going to be bad because our electricity infrastructure is old. we knew it was going to be affected. >> fuel is scarce and communicating is a problem.

cell phone service is unreliable. 6:08. new this morning, the last remaining lawsuit tied to the crash at sfo four years ago has been settled just before trial. the trial was scheduled to start today. it vol ved a south bay dental surgeon. the terms were not disclosed. this means all claims made by the 307 people on board the plane settled prior to reaching. a mostly clear start. as you get ready to head out to school and walking to school in palo alto, lower 50s. make sure you are wearing something nice and warm. as we go through the day, we'll have cool temperatures at recess, but warming up to 68 degrees by the time the kids get out of school. maybe you'll go hiking in the south bay. it is going to be a pleasant day, especially this afternoon. i'll have a look at today's

temperature trend coming up in three minutes. we are tracking how the roads are looking with the breaking news. >> delays are only getting worse after chp issued a sig-alert for this area, now an accident on the northbound side. we are already seeing a lot of red and yellow. typically, when there's an accident, especially an accident of this magnitude, it appears a vehicle maybe on fire. on the opposite side, traffic begins to slow down and look over. that's when we see a number of accidents and one just popped up here. as of now, they have not given us an estimated time when it is expekted to open. heavy delays, go ahead and leave now. here is a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. very busy there as well. >> thank you. next on the chopping block, the company saying good-bye to thousands of employees.

heater for a bit. it's a cool start. all clear skies. 40 minutes away from sunrise as we go through the neighborhood of every green. low 60s at 10:00 and low 70s today. very much like yesterday. it will be heating up this weekend. we'll take a look at the weekend forecast coming up at 6:19. if you are traveling up to san francisco or down toward the south bay peninsula, it's going to be a very, very delayed commute because that sig-alert remains in effect for southbound 101 before poplar avenue. a multivehicle crash with three lanes blocked. now another accident on the northbound side that may be blocking lanes. i'll have the latest updates. >> rough morning commute. 6:14. today is the day, the new iphone and i watch will be released in a matter of hours. some people are excited. kris sanchez is live at the apple store in palo alto. we are not seeing the massive

lines we are used to seeing when apple releases a new phone. >> reporter: well, you know, first of all, folks can preorder it and get it at home to open it. a lot of folks may be holding out for the iphone x, which is not out until december. right nour, there are more people outside but i think they might be apple folks we are talking about and, of course reporters with cnbc and their crew. one lone ranger in line. he is the first and he is the last. nbc bay area was on the apple campus when the iphone was unveiled, looking different on the outside with the new glass and that new aluminum design, which allows for wireless charging. it's different on the inside. improved camera technology and faster processing. also, it allows for augmented reality. comes with a base price of $699 which is lower than folks expected. the new watch with built-in

cellar for sale to date. scott mcgrew showed earlier reviews, one saying it's a great upgrade if you have a new phone. you will know it is new but may not know why. the one and only guy that waited overnight told us he preordered the phone, but didn't want to wait for it to be delivered to his house. >> pick it up in the store, it's like the day it arrives, it comes out. i decided i wanted to pick it up in the store instead. i didn't want to wait until october. >> reporter: so this, the iphone x may be the reason they don't have more company in line here. the $1,000 phone comes out in december with a wow factor with the facial recognition so many people are talking about. i thought more folks joined the line, but i think there are a lot of serious onlookers stopping by and looking around

stocks. falling for the first time in ten days, down 53 points. the nasdaq posted the worst day in a month dropping 33 points. hewlett-packard is planning to cut 5,000 jobs or 10% of the work force by the end of the year. according to reports, the reductions will impact workers and managerers in the u.s. and abroad. the cuts are part of the broader effort to reign in expenses and streamline operations. the mounting competition from other providers such as amazon and alphabet. general mills is bringing back the original, artificially colors version of their trix cereal after customers complained about the naturally flavored replacement. the classic one will sit alongside the natural version. this marks a reversal of the pledge back in 2015 to remove

you think about pumpkins and halloween and then you start to see those christmas decorations. we are starting out with cool weather this morning that gets you in that fall mood. how about this? we have been talking about snow in the sierra. the radar is clear except for a swath of snow moving through the higher elevation. this is what it looks like this morning as the sunrises, a live picture with a fresh coating of snow this morning. it was so beautiful coming down yesterday. lingering light snow showers and the high temperature up to 36 degrees. if you are going there, prepare for slick roads. it was really a mess yesterday and it does clear out for the weekend. i had quite a few people on facebook letting me know they are going to the sierra this weekend. we are starting out with temperatures here that are cooler than we have seen recently. down to 60 degrees in san jose and lower 40s in santa rosa. milder temperatures in san francisco where the high is at

65 degrees and 68 in oakland. 74 degrees today in livermore. an update on hurricane maria moving toward the turks and caicos. you can see the rain affecting that area now. that is curving to the north and should not affect anymore land over the next several days, which is going to be great news as it stays away from our coastline on the east coast. looking at temperatures warming up in san francisco, some upper 70s next week. summer will be coming back and we'll be in the low 90s inland after today seeing a high of 73 degrees. vianey arana is tracking two major crashes on the road. >> indeed. the traffic delays seem to only be getting worse. chp is reporting this as a hazmat situation because of the car fire. it will take longer to clear that out. the sig-alert is in place for southbound 101 before poplar half.

at 6:25, following breaking news from san francisco. theesz are live pictures from nbc bay area sky ranger where firefighters arrived and they were finding the fire nor san francisco state. they were evacuating the building, pulling some people out of the building to rescue them. we understand there's been one serious injury, so far. two moderate injuries. we have a crew on the ground gathering information as well. we don't see a lot of flames, they may have it under control but the investigation will continue as we don't know what it has actually sparked the fire. this is a twitter picture released earlier, moments ago. it shows the flames that were coming from the upper story

building there. we'll continue to bring you any information we can. we have a live crew on ground gathering information for us. 6:25 now. in our nbc bay area responds team saved viewers four figures pushing the total to $1.1 million. chris chmura is here with the cases and the money recovered. >> reporter: good morning. a frustrated pittsburgh woman wrote our team about a $900 tussle with the bank. we stepped in and the case is closed, settled in the viewers favor. we helped a san jose man end a dispute with an electronics company. the result, a refund of more than $220. he says the surveillance camera he exepected to work around the clock turned off from time to time. a woman gave a friend a $75 gift card. when they tried to use it, the balance was pen anies.

welcome back. we continue to follow breaking news out of san francisco. these are live pictures from the nbc bay area sky ranger over the scene of a fire that broke out near san francisco state. we have reports of people being rescued and evacuated. so far, we have been told tlsz one serious injury, two moderate to report so far. it looks like they have the flames out at this point. they were seen leaping from the upper story building there. a nine to ten story building. not far from merced at san francisco state. we have a crew on the ground getting more information. 6:30. good morning.

thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i eam marcus washington. today is the first day of fall. we want a look at what's going on. a cool start for morning. >> yes, it will feel like fall this friday morning. the high temperatures this afternoon, really nice. pretty much like yesterday, reaching to the low 70s for the south bay. 65 degrees in san francisco. antioch, a high of 77. also, 77 in santa rosa today. looking at our forecast for san francisco over the next several days, the temperature is reaching into the low 70s for the weekend. upper 70s next week. it's going to start to heat up. how about low 90s for the inland valleys. don't get used to this weather, it is about to change. we'll talk about the weekend forecast in seven minutes. vianey arana is tracking breaking news this morning. >> that sig-alert is getting worse for southbound 101. now, we are seeing lanes blocked on the northbound side. it's right before poplar avenue.

they are cleaning what looks to be a hazmat fire from the earlier crash. we are seeing another zend along northbound 101 that has two lanes blocked in that direction. southbound and northbound right now, a complete mess. the bay bridge toll plaza also showing bumper-to-bumper traffic as they clear out an accident near the toll plaza. back to the breaking news out of san francisco this morning. the fire at a high-rise very close to san francisco state, near park merced. >> we are going back to that neighborhood. we just arrived at the scene. >> reporter: we have live. the fire ladder is still extended. fire crews still trying to conduct their investigation. i spoke to two people who live inside. they were evacuated with their father, who is in a wheelchair. they said that two people lived

inside on that seventh floor. the fire broke out at 5:30 a.m. no report of injuries. two people treated for smoke inhilation at this time. just after 3:30 a.m., the fire broke out. there are several trucks, fire crews working inside. we can see people, the fire crews going up, inside the emergency stairwells trying to get people out. it seems at this point, most of the people have been evacuated. no reports of injuries at this time. the san francisco pio officer is supposed to speak shortly, so we will get an update. at this time, the seventh floor you see there, that's where the fire broke out after 5:30. again, no reports of injuries. two people had to be evacuated. reporting live in san francisco, ancer hassan, nbc bay area news. developing news in mexico. these are live pictures from the

scene where rescue efforts continue in the wake of this week's deadly earthquake. live pictures from the scene of many rescuers going out fully geared there. the rescue attempt of a young girl people were calling freida wasn't actually real. the mexican navy announcing they are investigating where the reports first started. this morning, the number dead stands at 273. there are still, however, stories of hope emerging. 60 victims have been rescued from the rubble of the last building. at the same time, the number of deaths expected to go higher. it's been a very exhausting and heart wrenching several days for people. >> damian trujillo has been on the ground in mexico since wednesday, reporting alongside those working around the clock to find those survivors. he joins us live from mexico city with the nonstop rescue work underway. good morning, damian.

>> reporter: things are pretty calm here, pretty back to normal. you drive ten miles and it is a completely different situation. apartment complex completely collapsed to the ground during this massive earthquake. the rescue efforts continue. people have been there around the clock, 24 hours a day. they say they can sleep when this is over. the volunteers are providing them with whatever medications they need. medications that come of those who are trapped under the rubble might need like penicillin, so they can breathe. the story about the little girl freida, yes, they are investigating where that came from. there's been a lot of false information released to the public here in mexico city. it's causing a lot of frustration with the folks out here. we don't know if the story about the little girl freida, whether

it was a folk tale to give the mexican people hope to keep looking for people. we heard there was another girl in that school named sofia that was missing. turns out the school registry showing every girl with the name sofia was accounted for. bad information creating a worse situation than it already is here. i tell you what, the spirit of the mexican volunteer, the mexican civilian out here, just incredible. we showed you pictures this morning. last night, they have been here night in and night out with motorcycles and bicycles, whatever they can. blankets, milk. they are asking for gatorade to keep the rescue crews energize zed. it's been a very exhausting effort. the mexican president said they will not stop until they have rescued everybody who needs to be rescued.

subsidized application fees for that program. when president trump signed an executive order rescinding daca, people have been rushing to renew it before the october deadline. the city will pay for the $495 fee. the money comes from the mayor's office of civic engagement and immigrant affairs. >> the coast guard crews are coming the harbor to locate 11 shipping containers. according to the east bay times, the shipping containers were not far from the port of oakland whose plan to remove the containers later today. i have some good news involving that sig-alert that has been issued. chp called off the sig-alert, which is great. we can finally see the traffic recovering. all lanes are open. southbound 101 before poplar avenue. we can expect to see delays because another accident on the northbound side seems to be

causing more issues on the southbound side. all that red means bumper-to-bumper traffic on the northbound side. even though that sig-alert has been cleared for now, still expect heavy delays on the northbound side. also seeing a couple accidents along 101 in the south bay. we are seeing delays. very minor accidents in comparison to the sig-alert. there weren't serious injuries involved which is why they were able to cancel that sig-alert. a live look outside, the situation is better for the peninsula. >> nice sunrise. last morning of summer. >> yes, it is. it's going to start to warm up as we go into the weekends. we have a little weather for everybody and events, too. let's check out tomorrow's forecast, reaching the upper 60s for the coast. a few clouds, not a lot of fog and lower 80s for the inland areas. warmer on sunday. that is the trend, also, as we go into next week.

will no longer be available in london. the city transportation agency announced they will not renew ubers operating license because of how it relates to safety. the license is set to expire at the end of the month. uber has 21 days to appeal. the company issued a statement saying it will appeal and london leaders are caving into groups that seek to resist consumer choice. new this morning, antioch police urging drivers to double check their credit and debit accounts. authorities found six skimmers at a valero gas station on thursday. it is near highway 4. they are trying to figure out who put them there. if you bought gas and find evidence of fraud, file a report. 6:45. firefighters don't know what caused a wine country home wednesday night. it happened on burgundy way. luckily no one was injured.

6:45. developing right now, pump says north korean leader, kim jong-un is a madman who doesn't mind starving or killing his people and will be tested like never before. the president making that statement on twitter a couple hours ago. the latest in the back and forth between two leaders. it comes as the president wraps up the united nations report. the president called kim jong-un a rocketman. kim jong-un fired back, attacking the president's competence and calling him der ranged. north korea says it may test a hydrogen bomb over the pacific ocean in response to president trump's u.n. speech, which threatened to totally destroy the rogue nation. the u.n. ambassador, nikki haley is trying to tell people it was not a declaration of war. >> the president said it. members of the team said it. we don't want war.

and vehicles home from florida. they are expected to arrive at the warehouse in oakland around noon. a lot have been deployed since the end of august in response to hurricane harvey and irma. the last lawsuit tied to the air crash from four years ago was settled before trial. it involved a dental surgeon making her unable to work. the attorney announced the settlement. the terms were not disclosed. this agreement means all claims made by the 307 people on board that plane were settled prior to reaching a trial. happening today, san francisco's iconic cable cars are being taken out of service and officials try to upgrade the system. the california line of cable cars is the first to undergo refurbishment. they will be out of service today through friday.

into the 70s. starting off the school day in san francisco, a few clouds here and there. overall, mostly clear skies. temperatures mid-50s. at recess, you will need long sleeves. upper 50s and reaching to the mid-60s by the time they head out to school. it's going to be windy. we have warmer weather in the forecast. fall officially begins at 1:02 this afternoon. then we go back to summer weather with these temperatures next week. heading over to vianey arana with an update on the morning commute. >> it's been a rough start. now, reports of a crash in the south bay. this is involving a motorcycle and a vehicle. it's along northbound 87. there is a lane blocked. there appears to be a motorcycle rider down in that lane. we will look into that. we are hoping he is okay, he or she might be okay. we are seeing heavy delays up to hillsdale avenue and capitol expressway in that area. another update on the sig-alert we had. chp issued earlier today.

back into the building. on all but the seventh floor where the fire started. this is firefighter photos from 5:30 this morning when flames were shooting from the window of one unit. the damage is limited to that unit. as for the victims, one person in serious condition. a second victim being treated in the hospital. a third is treated and released. so far, no word on the cause of the fire. we are monitoring developments in mexico where rescue efforts continue in the wake of the deadly earthquake. we also learned the rescue attempt of a girl called freida was not real. the mexican navy is investigating where those reports first started. this morning, the number of deaths stand at 273, but there are still stories of hope emerging. 60 victims emerged from the rubble of the collapsed building. the "today" show will continue
