won't see a huge difference now. for the latest portion of the day, an increase of 10-15 degrees. san francisco at the 60 degrees mark, san jose, 61. a quick check of what to expect. 81 in san jose and 89 in livermore. mike? >> over here, we are looking at the dublin grade. that's fine. reports of a disabled vehicle at the dublin interchange saying it was at the interchange. it's smooth from the picture and sensors. the issue is back toward the altamont, as you would expect. sounds like everything is off to the shoulder, we are tracking that. perhaps another issue, a crash heading down. we'll check on 680. hopefully, chp will have an update in a couple minutes.

the bay bridge shows the traditional slowing as you approach. it will go down the east shore freeway, back to you. >> we are following breaking news. a rude wake-up call for a san francisco family when a speeding car flies into a home, slamming into a garage. >> this happened near the intersection of bosworth, congo and elk street meet in the neighborhood. we are live at the scene. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you marcus and laura. as you mentioned, the intersection of cog know is where the car hit. the power is on next to the home. here is the damage, guys. that's where the car drove into the home roughly arnds 12:30 a.m. that's what we are hearing from san francisco fire. we'll show you the video from that scene, when it took place. you can see that car into the garage portion of the home that we just showed you.

as i mentioned, there's a fire. this took place just before 1:00 a.m. the car hitting one of the main service lines and the process to pop the circuit breaker shut off power to the home next door. i'm looking at the home and the power is back on. the residents who complained of odors and smells. pg&e says there were no issues of that regard. the car in the video, the folks inside the car were talking to medics as you can see in the video. still a scary scene for residents. here is one talking about what took place. >> i was going to bed and in my sleep, i heard a loud pop. my wife said what was that and started looking around the house. the lights on and off, they popped out and more popping noises. >> reporter: a loud pop, indeed. we go back out here live. the plastic and the wood over the garage where the crash took

place. there's nowhere from authorities. there's no word on why the car drove into the home. we continue to monitor the scene here as many changes occur. we'll have that for you in the live report. live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you, pete. new this morning, the south bay officer taken to the hospital after this crash. we just got this video into our news room that happened just before 3:00 near the intersection of camden avenue and union avenue. the officers suv was rear ended while at the red light. there's no damage to the back of that vehicle. the driver of the other vehicle was taken into custody. developing right now, the white house trying to de-escalate the latest war of words with north korea. defense secretary, james mattis addressed the matter on a trip to india. he spoke of his appreciation of india keeping pressure on north korea. he spoke of the growing crisis

and escalating rhetoric. >> that is our goal to solve this diplomatically and i believe that president trump has been very clear on this issue. >> a series of tweets from president trump over the weekend prompted north korea's foreign minister to call them, quote, a declaration of war. the white house dismissed that statement as absurd. >> ladies if you work alone, you wanted to hear this tale. police busted women burglars targeting other women. >> they show how the women work together to dupe working women and how you could be a target. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, su y sunnyvale police say they target working women to make off with stolen credit cards and cash. these are the three women --

melissa larson, 19-year-old madeline lopez and an 18-year-old. detectives say the trio would target them and created a version of a clogged toilet. while the victim was distracted, the other takes off with the credit cards or purse to buy gift cards with those stolen cards and stolen money. detectives say they are treated -- here are tips for women who have to work alone in retail, kep little cash on the premises, avoid taking out the garbage when you are alone and limit the entry and exit doors. that is applicable to real estate women as well. keep a register of the guests coming through. for all women working alone, keep your keys on you, your wallet and expensive jewelry in

the trunk of your car. we hear of officers say trust your gut. if something doesn't feel right, call for help. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> never know. >> thank you so much, kris. the fbi is out with numbers showing the rate of crime across the country. nationally, the rate increased for a second straight here. property crimes down for the 14th straight year according to the report. overnight, we looked into the data specifically for california. in the bay area, the numbers vary city by city. they have crime rates down from historic highs. statewide, violent crime went up 4% in 2016 thanks to an update in major cities. property crime down 3%. dallas played arizona in monday night football. once again, all everyone is talking about is what happened before the game and the playing of the national anthem. >> of course, that includes president trump.

before we show you what happened last night, here is the president's tweet from an hour ago. he says the booing at the nfl football game when the entire dallas team dropped to the knees was the loudest i have ever heard. great anger. here is what he is referring to. the cowboys taking to a knee before the national anthem, joined by the dallas owner, jerry jones. the cowboy team rose before it began. joe talked about the decision. >> we planned and it went, was executed according to plan that we would go out, kneel in prayer or kneel, and basically stand for and make the statement that regarding the knee for unity and the need for equality. >> prior to last night's game, no cowboys player had taken part in the protest going on during the national anthem. by the way, dallas won that game, 28-17. a bay area student band members

made a statement of their own at the oakland coliseum. 100 members of the oakland band took to their knee playing the national anthem. that represents five schools. we spoke to a band member along with veterans on both sides of the issue. >> i want to support all other black people in the world and around the world. it's not fair how they were shot and killed. >> social activism at the finist. >> i spent 21 years giving people the right to protest and do whatever they want, but not to disrespect this country. that's what they are doing. >> for the third straight game, the catcher, bruce maxwell took a knee. a large part of the crowd gave him a standing ovation. 5:08. believe it or not, we are tracking hurricane maria, again. north carolina's outer banks are set to feel the impact of the storm that devastated the

caribbean. tropical storm warnings are in effect for portions of the north carolina coast. u.s. territory of puerto rico is among the hardest hit by maria. leaders are pleading for help. most of the island is still without power. the country's medical system is straining to provide services to thousands of patients. emergency room physician says a hospital has electrical power and water. the governor is warning the possible humanitarian crisis. president trump is actually highlighting puerto rico's death as the island recovers, tweeting, texas and florida are doing great. puerto rico, which is already suffering from broken infrastructure and massive debt is in deep trouble. the electrical grid, which was in terrible state was devastated. much of the island was destroye food, water and medical are top priorities in doing well.

#fema. good news when it comes to south bay water levels. the mercury news reports the dwround ground water returned to the same levels they were before the drought started six years ago. the water district first noticed the recovery. the paper published their finding. more details we look into the recent impact from the drought. a uc davis report found during the last year of the drought, there was a net shortage of 700,000 acres statewide. california's crop revenue losses last year totalled $250 million. that's still less than 1% of the overall. we are in the 60s, but today's microclimate highs will be climbing into the upper 80s. san jose, a high of 89 degrees. morgan hill, 90.

as you step outside now, we are on the cooler side along the coast. 90 degree temperatures will be in the east bay. we are kind of going to a bit of a contrast from the coast to inland areas. walnut creek, a high of 92. peninsula, a high of 75 in half-moon bay. san francisco has another shot of climbing into the 80s. 81 degrees for mission and north bay, 87 degrees, 94 for navato. remember the red flag warnings remain in effect because we are expecting to see another pick up of those winds. they are going to be fairly dry. pair it with the hotter temperatures. that makes for fire danger in the area. if you have plans to be outside barbecuing, keep that in mind. mike? >> barbecuing on a monday worked out okay at our house. we have scattered incidents, most not a big deal. i'm concerned about this. we heard of a crash. chp confirmed a big rig versus an suv southbound 880 at the off

chase. taking you back live to the southland, this is a look at the chopper overseeing the canyon fire, there at the bottom of your screen there. so far, it is destroyed one home that has been growing about 2,000 acres consumed so far. coming up, we are going to hear from evacuees where there are homes continuing to be threatened. once again, the fire burning in the hills above anaheim. happening now, fears of volcanic eruption are causing a mass eruption. the volcano is in the island of bali. they have ordered an evacuation of the island. at least 75,000 people have left their homes. new this morning, a future cup of coffee could give you jitters before you take a sip.

a nonprofit group wants coffee manufactures, distributers and retailers to post warnings about a cancer causing chemical in every brew. they cham starbucks and other companies failed to look at warning signs. the coffee industry acknowledged the process of the chemical that says it is harmless and outweighed by the benefits of drinking coffee. at 5:16, a look at business and tech news, let's get a look at the headlines. >> that's right. who do we do that with? we are joined by landon dowdy. good morning. >> reporter: hi, good morning to you both. wall street will try to rebound from yesterday's lawsuit, futures are mixed. the dow fell for a third straight session over rising tensions between the u.s. and north korea. the nasdaq was dragged down by facebook, which had the worst day of the year.

oil prices are holding near multimonth highs. looking at data from new home sales, fed chair janet yellin spoke this afternoon. the nasdaq down to 56 to 6370. netflix will partner with airlines next year with the mobile streaming technology. they report the move is part of efforts to get airlines to offer a better wi-fi service. the reasoning is simple, the better the wi-fi, the more passengers can use it to stream on planes and download them before they board. netflix partnered with airlines before to give free wi-fi. lyft added a new feature to help drivers. they include 24/7 live phone support and improved spanish language. the features will also be with destination mode so they set

destinations up to six times and ride guides, which use trip data to offer when they are able to pick up the next fare. back to you. >> interesting. thanks, landon. it is ak 18 right now. only on nbc bay area, a football coach who became a viral sensation gets a surprise visit from ellen. the live camera crew went to san jose state university to pay a surprise visit to coach carter. you may remember the moves he busted out to "can't touch this." they posted the video over the summer. coach carter used to be a back-up dancer to a rapper. isn't that great? he told ellen why he made the move to college football. >> i wanted to change lives, go back to my community, give back and let college football get the opportunity for a college education. >> you can see the segment on ellen that airs at 4:00.

there's another surprise that comes during that show. >> no surprise it has to do with dancing. >> kind of fun. >> let's look at what's going on with the weather. a fun day to be outside. >> great day to be outside. temperatures warmer than they are supposed to be and we are tracking hurricane maria. estimated wind speeds, not too bad. we can expect to see the temperatures picking up over the next couple hours. that's going to bring the threat of fire danger in the forecast. the current temperatures remain in the 50s and the 60s across the board, but we will see a warm up, about 80 and 90 degrees into the afternoon hours. right now, as you step outside, it is going to be a combination of cool and mild, depending on where you are. 89 degrees expected in san jose. palo alto, 89, livermore, 91. san francisco, we are expecting to hit a high of 80 degrees. the red flag warning does remain

in effect. that is expected to stick around at least through tomorrow. the north bay and the highlighted areas in the east bay. that low humidity, pair that up with hotter temperatures and that brings the threat. we are estimated the wind gusts to pick up later tonight, 10:30. if you notice for the north bay and parts of the east bay, napa area, 15, possibly 20 miles per hour, the rest of the bay area, overall, nice, calmer winds. let's talk about hurricane maria. current location, it is just inching closer to north carolina. forecast right now, it is expected to be about 150 miles east of the outer banks as of tomorrow. that's going to bring tropical storm conditions, power outages, dangerously. the storm surge is going to be a major threat. we are expecting this hurricane to kind of level down to more of a tropical storm as it gets closer.

the next couple days, it is expected to weaken. we are keeping close eye because of the storm surge and power outages are a threat to north carolina. we cool off by friday. mike? >> we are looking at a smooth drive as far as the speed sensors go. a disabled vehicle not a problem near the dublin interchange. don't worry about it right now. the crash was showing slowing. chp has not arrived as of a couple minutes ago. it only affects the transition. the transition is open. it's critical through that area. we continue to track that. southbound 880 at alva ra doe, the crash may be blocking the fast lane. it's at least a distraction and see the slowing on the sensors show up. we'll track that to make sure it's not a major issue. note the slow right now. we are seeing slowing coming off

bars after allegely pepper 5:25. new this morning, a strange tell in the bay area. san francisco couple is behind bars after allegedly pepper spraying a san bruno woman and stealing her cat. this happened saturday night in san bruno. the two spikes were arrested and released. no word on why the cat may have been taken or if it has been returned. nbc's hit drama "this is us" returns for a second season tonight. coming back with emmy awards in tow. the season finale left viewers with questions and some of them may be answered as soon as tonight's first episode. >> i don't know if you can

we begin with breaking news. a fire threatening homes near anaheim in southern california. these are live pictures overhead of the fire that is burning dangerously close to homes, already consuming one. people are fleeing as they evacuate that area. much closer to home, starting on a very nice day, 5:30 right now. good morning to you, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm marcus washington. let's head over to vianey arana in for kari hall with a look at the forecast. >> we are dealing with similar conditions for southern california. we have the threat of fire danger here because we are seeing clear, cool, dry conditions with northerly winds.

that could be a factor for us going into tonight. peninsula, 60 degrees, south bay, 51. 64 for if tri-valley. san francisco 59 degrees. the humidity is fairly low, but the temperatures are high. here is a quick check of the temperature trend by 10:00 a.m. we'll be at the 70-degree mark. by 1:00, we quickly climb into those lower 80s, reaching the upper 80s by mid afternoon with areas hitting the 90s. it's going to be a very warm, above average day across the bay area. mike? >> we are looking at an average commute. it's okay. most of the bay looking good. there is one issue in fremont we want to warn you about. the crash is blocking a lane. it is south of the alvarado ramp. slowing south of san mateo bridge. we'll track that. the san mateo bridge may see

more traffic as a result. the metering lights are turned on. north of hayward is looking standard. back to you. 5:31. new morning, video just out of the south bay showing the fire ripping through brush near the swim center in holmes. the san jose fire crew says they were called overnight to the fire on the property of the fair swim center, which is between mclaughlin and highway 101. the fire burned close to a house next door but was contained in an area behind the swim center. it took 15 minutes for firefighters to knock it down. a pair of senate republicans unveiled a conservative report. this, as congress continues to race the calendar to the end of the daca program. it includes efforts to appease conservatives and limit concerns they have to limit hundreds of

thousands of immigrants to become citizens. back here at home, students on the peninsula are rallying around classmates at risk of being kicked out of the country. >> bob redell is live outside the high school where later today, students plan to march for their classmates. bob, what do students have planned for today? >> reporter: well, good morning marcus and laura. later today, after class, students and teachers will march in support of their classmate that is are daca recipients. it eeps a program that allows undocumented children to stay in the united states after beinging brought here by their parents. president trump indicating he may end daca. the so-called d.r.e.a.m.ers are at risk of deportation. it's possible your child attends school with a d.r.e.a.m.er. this afternoon, the students and teachers will carry handmade

signs and march to let their d.r.e.a.m.er friends know we support daca and you, you are not alone. >> super scared. i feel like if they open up, they are going to cry or something. but, they should know that's okay. they have -- we are someone they can lean on and that we are just going to be there through it all with them. >> they need to know that they have teachers and other students who support them and who are behind them and who don't want to see them go. we want to support everything, the hard work they have been doing over the years. >> the policy that is are coming up are unjust and unfair and we are not going to stand for it. >> reporter: the students and staff will march at 4:00 in nearby eagle park for a public rally that will be taking place at 5:00. again, that is open to the public. the organizers are with the latino student union, a newly

formed teachers in solidarity. they point out, this is not an official school event. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. happening today, concord city counsel members will vote to better protect undocumented immigrants in the wake of daca. the resolution would limit cooperation of police with federal immigration authorities. city councilmembers will hold a meeting ahead of the vote. happening today, six construction companies plan to test prototypes for the wall. they plan to hold a mass at the construction site. >> violence is not welcome in either direction. the only way to overcome hate is love. even though we are opposed to

the wall, we can protest in a peaceful manner. >> san diego law enforcement offer pairing for the demonstrations. developing in southern california, firefighters are in a desperate battle to save hundreds of homes. this is a live look from our sister station in l.a. the chopper is flying overhead. you can see the flames billowing. the wildfire destroyed one home so far. the canyon fire is burning between anaheim and corona. we checked, it's birned more than 2000 acres. it started saturday afternoon. evacuees grabbed what they could. they have no idea if their houses are still there. >> feel hopeless. this is basically whatever i have. >> about 300 homes are evacuated. right now, firefighters say the fire is out of control and there's no timetable on the containment. all new this morning at

5:35, the san francisco police department says two-thirds of traffic violations come from uber or lyft drivers. at a hearing, the supervisor called the number quote, basically unbelievable. here, you be the judge. here are the specific numbers. out of 2600 total traffic violations, 1700 were for ride sharing vehicles. the numbers are from april through june. they are for abinstructing traffic and making illegal u-turns. lyft tells the examiner, the company is committed to working with city leaders to cut congestion. continuing coverage, surveillance video of robbing toll booths in vallejo. we covered this story live yesterday morning here on "today in the bay." video shows the person in the front seat of that car pull the gun on the toll taker and demand the cash. the two thieves struck twice

during an eight-hour period on sunday. they robbed the carquinez bridge and the bay bridge. they drove a mercedes with carmax dealer plates. i have some curious over at the bay bridge. i want to talk about the slowing that has developed heading toward fremont out of hayward. look at that. south of the san mateo bridge, 92 is jammed up. that's the off ramp where a crash blocked one lane. chp updated the reason why we have confusion is two separate crashes. no may injuries. that may impede some folks. the san mateo bridge may see slowing as folks get the back up and heading south to fremont. i want to take the bay bridge toll plaza camera as well. it is right behind the clock. see the flashing lights on the time there. there's an issue in the parking

you can see the report on the "today" show at 7:00 a.m. 5:45. legal fees are going up in the battle over who is responsible for san francisco's sinking millennium tower. they argue the transit center is causing the tower to sink. the chronicle reports the power authority approved $1.5 million in legal fees. that brings the total cost to $3.5 million. insurance or transbased power contractors will likely cover those costs. nbc bay area's investigator unit led the way to the story, even since the tower's troubles began to emerge. go to www.nbcbayarea.com to view the stories. search tower. closing doors three decades after their first opened. the owners of the brewery say it will shut down in early november. it opened back in 1988 as one of

warmer. breezy, dry, gusty near the hills. here is a look at what you can expect overall. we keep that elevated fire danger for the north bay and the east bay at least through the end of the week, despite the drop in temperatures for thursday. significant warming. expect 70s, upper 80s, valleys, mid-90s. cooling headed to friday. we stay nice and warm through thursday, 79 degrees in san francisco. as we head into friday and saturday, we see a change up with another system coming in and that's going to increase the cloud cover. it's going to cool us down with a nice on shore flow. that's going to cool down inland spots as well. we go from 90s to 87 degrees by friday. saturday and sunday, something to look forward to, more comfortable, lower 80s in the forecast. mike? >> we have two angles at the bay bridge. flashing lights there, this is all the congestion. the flashing lights in the parking lot area to the left as you approach the bay bridge.

the congestion because the metering lights are on. the reverse angle, typical of the back-up stacking up. back here is where the fire truck was. a flashing light. we have a chp cruiser, a fire truck and a tow truck until a couple minutes ago blocking the transition ramp off the toll plaza and the east parking lot. that has cleared up and trust they are moving away from the area and the injuries are not major. it sounds like the initial report at the parking lot. as far as the flow of traffic approaching the area, that is standard. it didn't affect the flow. this is looking great as far as the flow of traffic there for a tuesday. over here, this is looking tough and bad here out of hayward, jamming up toward 92 and really jamming to the nimitz where there are two crashes. at least one lane is blocked and the crash activity continues for
