way into san francisco to work this morning. it will be the next message after this. a california based progressive group called the campaign, had the message put up this past monday and was supposed to stay up until monday. campaign received an e-mail from out front media that it received too many complaints. there you go. the message is up there calling for the impeachment of the president of the united states. as a result, the complaints against us, out front media will be removing that message. i reached out to outfront media to verify they are taking it down. we are still waiting for a response. the campaign is calling for the impeachment because they believe he's used office for personal gain. in response to outfront media's decision to remove the message rk they released a statement that says quote, by censoring

political speech, outfront media is doing trump's dirty work. their actions are shameful and un-american. reporting live here along the bay bridge, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right, bob, thanks. 5:02. new this morning, the fire danger is still top of mind for many around the bay area and the state. this is new video coming in from contra costa county as crews were knocking down flames. the fire broke out after trump began to burn along the skyway. the scene is now clear. temperatures are climbing, however, and firefighters remain on alert across the state and here at home. a fire burning in southern california right now. closer to us, overnight, we learned the flames in the open hills are mostly out. the firefighters still are on the scene. kris sanchez anchored live breaking news yesterday after the fire broke out. she is live there now with the overnight development.

good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and lori. we watched the fire as it was taking off. this morning, the smell of smoke is strong here in oakland hills. as you mentioned, there are fire crews stationed around, making sure there are no hot spots that have opportunity to take off and set fire to the hills, once again. this is what it looked like as we were bringing it live to you after the midday newscast. at the height of the fire, the flames were making a run through the rugged terrain. oakland fire acted fast calling for reinforcement from cal fire. they got air support and firefighters from neighboring departments as well. oakland police ordering the evacuation of hundreds of homes. they did not have to be asked twice to get out. >> we are afraid because the smoke was coming on our side. we didn't know fw the flames were coming toward our side.

>> reporter: this is the same area that burned in the 1991 oakland hills fire. back then, it was a grass fire that flaired up from the day before that really took off and was so devastating before it was all over, 25 people died in that fire. 3500 homes were wiped out. we talked with a man that survived that fire but lost his home and pet. he was here because he chos to rebuild in the same spot. he had to get out yesterday. we are going to bring you what he had to say at 6:00. we'll post pictures of what it looks like this morning on twitter and facebook. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you, kris. as for the fire in southern california, firefighters are making headway in the fire, burning near anaheim since monday. evacuees are going home. still, 2,000 homes are threatened. the fire is 15% contained. 2000 acres have burned.

let's get a better sense of what's going on with the temperatures with vianey arana. >> we are actually dealing with the same weather in southern california, the same weather pattern we have seen here and we'll continue to see tonight before we see relief. a quick update on the oakland hills fire. the threat is starting to go down. within the next 24 hours, we see the winds diminish, decreasing from the northeast and down to 10 miles per hour and below, which would be great. the temperatures, though, we are expecting to hit 80s by 12:00 and the possibility of hitting a high of 90 in oakland. we are seeing the low humidity. that will remain a threat through tonight and through tomorrow before we finally start seeing a bit of that cooling, which is why the red flag warning for the north bay and east bay hills will remain in effect through tonight at 5:00 p.m. because of that low humidity and those hot 90s that we are expecting for the north bay and the east bay. back to you.

>> thank you very much. 5:05. new this morning, the school district superintendent is expected to resign friday. mercury news reports it comes amid questions about the school district budget decisions and the way it handled sexual assault cases. the superintendent came under scrutiny when the district missed a deadline to notify units about pay raises. now, they are expected to pay $4 million for those raises. parents in the district voiced concerns saying he should have notified them immediately after a student reported a sexual assault at palo alto high school. a man stabbed a san francisco police officer at sfo yesterday is due in court. it happened at the airport's terminal one baggage claim. police were called about a suspicious man. when the officer approached, police say the man attacked the officer with a knife. the officer was not seriously injured. the suspect, 64-year-old

we are expecting the hotter temperatures for the east bay. c concord a high of 50i9. walnut, 93 degrees. oak larnd climbing into the 90s. typically, oakland stays in the 80s, but today we'll see a nice increase. redwood city, 90. san francisco, upper 80s. that is why they are opening cooling centers. you can find all the info on www.nbcbayarea.com. santa rosa, a high of 93. sonoma, 92. over the next two days, we see the ridge of high pressure sitting over the bay area move out. we are expecting a very dry, clear day. that means the fire danger, especially for the highlighted areas will remain a factor through tonight and through tomorrow. now, the relative humidity right now in concord is 33%, oakland 36. napa, 28. there's a threat of why there is a red flag warning in place. it will remain in place until

skies making way for sunrise and sunset. san francisco, typically, is used to seeing that fog. the temperature trend, by 9:00 a.m., 70 degree mark. santa clara is expected to be one of those areas that climbs into the 90s. it won't be the only one. we are expecting hot temperatures in the east bay and north bay. climbing into those 80s. i'll break down exactly when the heat will be leaving us. first, let's check in with mike. this is not leaving soon, the back up at the toll plaza. the metering lights turned on at 5:22. eight minutes and look at that. a smooth flow of traffic around the bay. one issue besides it bay toll plaza, the crash we were talking about is on stanley boulevard off isabel. some folks might be hearing about that and heading toward that area. that might be why you see a slight shift in traffic flow.

humanitarian crisis and a plea for help. these are americans in need. many puerto ricans a trying to escape including vanessa running low on formula for her child. aftermath of hurricane maria. we are going to talk to the spokesperson in the next hour. here is how it is going to break down. first, they are going to fly from here this afternoon to north carolina to pick up a generator. the generator is going to be used when they arrive in puerto rico on thursday. it will power air traffic control in san juan, puerto rico. that's important because it will allow the airport to reopen to more flights. the travis air force base has been busy due to relief efforts around the country. the aircraft here can hold roughly around two greyhound buses full of cargo, making it a vital resource when it comes to flying cargo and rescue teams to different sites. an aircraft will land here at 6:40 and depart to north carolina this afternoon. our cameras will be here when the aircraft arrives at 6:40. we are going to talk to a spokesperson and get more

details. we'll have that for you in the next hour. live at travis air force base, pete suratos, "today in the bay." >> thank you, pete. another hearing for the two men charged in the ghost ship warehouse fire. a man and his assistant are facing 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the fire. both men were in court for a plea hearing. a lawyer asked for the charges to be dropped. the judge denied that request. 5:34. anyone who lives here knows it's hard to rent, let alone buy a home in the bay area. there's a push to provide housing for teachers. today, city leaders and school district officials held a public meeting. earlier this year, ed lee committed $44 million and a plot of land in the outer sunset to build homes for 60-90 teachers. the meeting is set for 12:30 at

the urban center. we reached out to san jose unified district who he has teachers start out at $55,000 a year. they do not have land to build housing. the only solution is pay teachers more. they say it's a challenge given budget restraints. on the hook for 24 billion dlarls in retiree costs according to a are you port from the office. l.a. unified school district is responsible for half, nearly $14 billion in retiree costs. they argue good health care is an essential tool for hiring teachers. the looming debt means newer teachers are offered less money and skimpier benefits. 5:35. we are expecting to hear more about a new study on reopening the closed tunnel in marin county. they say it will cost 46 mill$4 million to rehabilitate the

patterns, which is nice. we will be seeing the 60s now as you are making your way outside. 64 degrees in san jose. 61 for palo alto. san francisco, 64, livermore, 66. the highs will be jumping quickly. palo alto, a high of 89. san francisco, climbing to about 80 degrees. we will be climbing into the 90-degree mark. that's going to create the fire danger for the north bay and the east bay hills. we have seen a couple wildfires break out. you see just how quickly that can spread because of the combination of low humidity, hot temperature and the light winds that were coming in yesterday. thankfully, the winds are expected to die down over the next couple hours. as we get to the ridge of high pressure making its exit, we will get a change in weather, which means a nice jet stream will play in and this will make a change in weather by friday, bringing in more cool air and a drop in temperatures by 10-15 degrees in areas. before we get that cooldown, a

couple things to keep in mind for today, elevated fire danger, significant warm k. valleys, mid-90s. we look forwards toward the lake cooling. we have to get through today and couple hours before we see a big impact. let's update you on hurricane maria. this is expected to kind of inch closer, already inching closer, you can see bands of rain hitting north carolina and the outer banks. this will be passing through. thankfully, the worst of those winds, which is 75 plus miles per hour will stay offshore. it's going to pass 150 miles east of the outer banks. as we begin to see the trek of that, it will turn from a tropical storm, expekted to weaken, kind of moving away and hopefully we'll see that hurricane maria make its exit, you know, expect to see the chance of power outages and strong storm surge for north carolina. expect breezy conditions as we
