keep that in mind. mike? >> we are looking at the commute, we are just getting started for most art area. south bay, not a major issue. no surprise for the peninsula, either. the east bay, a crash southbound 880 as you approach the transition at 92, toward the san mateo bridge. we see slowing through hayward. no surprises for the pattern. this was reported a few minutes ago in the middle of the roadway. chp has yet to arrive. the travel times show a great drive. 20 minutes to the berkeley curve. i will check the peninsula. traffic is light here. this is the bay shore at palo alto university. back to you. >> new this morning, at 6:01, the fire danger is still at the top of the minds of many people in the bay area and the state. take a look at video coming in from contra costa county overnight. crews were fighting to knock down the flames. the fire broke out after a truck began to burn along cummings

skyway, which connects highway 80 and highway 4. the scene is now clear. >> that's not the only fire we are on this morning. southern california firefighters battle the canyon fire burning in anaheim. here in the bay area, firefighters monitor hot spots in the oakland hills after flames grew dangerously close to homes. that fierce fire forced 100 people out of their homes. as it has heat ramps up today, more fire danger is ahead. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in the oakland hills this morning with how firefighters are preparing and taking watch. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and marcus. there is a heavy smell of smoke here. you can hear and see the fire truck there behind me. that fire crew is one of several stationed around the perimeter of this 20-acre fire. although it is out, they are watching for hot spots. they don't want anything to flair up and take off. we brought live coverage

yesterday at the height of the fire fight with flames making a run through the rugged terrain. oakland fire acted fast, calling in cal fire for air support. trucks, tankers and firefighters. 300 battling the blaze. oakland police ordered people from 100 homes, including james who lost his house and dog in the 1991 oakland hills fire. >> stirs up memories and reinforces the need to be prepared. >> reporter: pete suratos was another one of those folks told to grab what he could and get out. he said it was surreal to be on the other side of the story. you can see the smoke pouring out the back of the town homes. the hill behind his town home. this is the same area that burned in the 1991 oakland hills fire. you might remember then, it was

a grass fire that flaired up from the night before that was thought to be out that sparked that fire. it was so destructive. before it was over, 25 people died, 3500 homes were wiped out. vianey arana tells us that the red flag fire danger is going to continue today, here for the east bay hills. so folks are going to want to keep track of that. you can follow the weather conditions with the nbc bay area app. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> 6:04. the fire in southern california, firefighters are making headway and tackling the wildfire that now has burned 2,000 acres. the canyon fire has been burning near anaheim since monday. we checked the numbers, that fire is 15% contained. still, thousands of homes are being threatened. firefighters are letting some evacuees back home. we want to bring in vianey arana to get a closer look at the fire dangers at home. >> they are sticking around through tonight because of the low humidity. we are talking the hot

temperatures and we are talking the increase of winds, specifically more to the north, but regardless, the warning will remain in effect for the north bay and east bay hills. the elevations of 1,000 feet is where we are seeing the highest risk and the warming temperatures will climb into the 80s, upper 80s and 90s in those spots. if you live near a hillside, always be prepared. that warning is in effect until 5:00 p.m. thanks. as it has heat continues, follow the weather forecast in the neighborhood downloading the nbc bay area app. a controversial impeached donald trump billboard near the bay bridge will be no more. the company who owns it is pulling it down after they received numerous complaints. for the electronic, impeach trump, sign the owner of the billboard ordered that message removed. that message has yet to be removed. it is popping up in bright lights for commuters eastbound across the bridge on the way to san francisco. a california based progressive group called the courage campaign had the message put up. it will be coming up after this message. it was supposed to stay up until monday. courage said it received an e-mail from outfront immediate kra that they received too many complaints and would be removing the message. now, i did reach out to outfront media this morning to verify they are, in fact, taking this down and how many complaints they received. we are waiting for a response. they are calling for impeachment

of trump because they believe he used the office for personal gain. in response to outfront's media decision to remove the message, the courage campaign released a statement that reads, in part, by censoring political speech, outfront media is doing trump's dirty work. their actions are shameful and un-american. reporting live here in oakland, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> no surprise the controversy comes with that. thanks, bob. new this morning, the palo alto unified superintendent is expected to resign on friday. mercury news reports this comes amid questions about the school district budget decisions and the way they handle sexual assault cases. he came under scrutiny when the district missed a deadline to notify about pay raises. now, they are expected to pay 4 million dlarls for the raises.

parents voiced concerns saying he should have notified them immediately after a student reported a sexual assault at palo alto high school. the man authorities say stabbed a san francisco police officer at sfo yesterday is due in court. it happened at the terminal one baggage claim. police were called about a suspicious man. when the officer approached the suspect, they attacked him with a knife. police say the suspect, 64-year-old johnson, may be a transient and faces murder charges. a follow up when it comes to concerts at levi stadium. at least for now, the show will not go on late night on school nights. they will not allow non49er events to go after the curfew. some have gone after including u-2 and beyonce. ed sheeran canceled a concert

taxes tremendously. >> president trump is hoping to avoid one of the pitfalls that doomed the republican health care plan introducing the tax plan today with a democrat, senator joe donnelly from indiana. 6:15. new details on sexually transmitted diseases. it hit a record high last year. california's rates were near the top. they say there were more than 2 million cases reported in the u.s. in 2016. multiple populations felt that impact including women, infants and gay and bisexual men. at the same time, the cdc says it most common stds can be cured with antibiotics. if left untreated, serious consequences. we looked at the numbers and california tops all states in the number of stds reported. california has more in the middle when it comes to rates per capita except syphilis.

california will put a debt in rising house prices. the golden state would need a add a little more than 20% more housing to reach a 10% reduction in home prices. economists who put together the report suggested making housing affordable would be difficult, at best. just into the news room this morning, delta airlines would allow passengers to text for free, while in flight. they announced they will become the first u.s. carrier to offer free mobile messaging. passengers will be able to use i message, what's app and facebook messenger. now to more business and tech headlines, a big change for twitter and partnership for lyft. >> morgan is live with the

stories. good morning, morgan. >> good morning, guys. it could be a day of green here on wall street. the trading day is poised to start in positive territory. stocks gave up early change yesterday. the dow fell for a fourth straight session. today, looking for economic data and pending home sales. the dow falling 11 points to 22,284. nasdaq was up nine to 6380. the days of twitter limiting messages to 140 characters may be numbered. the company says they allow a test to allow 280 characters or double. twitter says the emphasis will never change, but has wondered whether people could express themselves easily enough. twitter is acknowledging that some users may have an emotional attachment to 140 characters. meantime, seems like another day, another hack attack. sonic says they have been

storm surge watches and warnings in place. these are new pictures just into the news room. puerto rican columnists say there are long lines for food, cash and fuel. there is still tons of garbage and debris in the street. >> it's been more than a week since hurricane maria destroyed puerto rico. here is where things stand. the federal government will assume 100% of the recovery cost providing relief to the u.s. territory's cash-strapped government. it is easier to get supplies and hire contractors. they face months of recovery and billions of dollars of cost to restore infrastructure and services. 12,000 people are still in emergency shelters. the governor of that area is warning of an impending humanitarian crisis and issuing a plea for more help, reminding us, these are americans in need. many puerto ricans are

desperately trying to escape. >> needed a way out of puerto rico. we live there, but it's just unlivable right now. >> thousands of additional troops and a navy hospital ship are headed to the island. help from california is on the way. a local team will start a long journey to puerto rico to open the airport on the island. >> good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you marcus and laura. we are here at the travis amir force base. we moved to the runway area helping with hurricane relief efforts in general, since hurricane harvey. in ten minutes, we are going to see the military's largest aircraft landing right behind me. it's going to be used for the relief efforts when it comes to hurricane maria. i did speak with a spokesperson. here is why they are using this

aircraft. first, it's going to land at 6:40, then fly to north carolina. it will be there overnight and they are going to pick up a generator. that generator is going to be brought to puerto rico thursday, to san juan, puerto rico. it's going to help with air traffic control. it will be important to allow them to open to more flights to help folks in that area. the base has been busy due to relief efforts. sharing with hurricane harvey, moving to hurricane maria and, of course, with hurricane maria. the airplane can hold two greyhound buses full of cargo. it is vital to providing cargo and teams to different sites. here they are telling me their role. >> incredibly important as well as a humbling experience to the air crew and personnel involved in this. we are never happy it happened, but we are humbled they would ask that we can support this.

prayer. it happened yesterday. as tensions ran high, protesters and counter protesters shouted at each other. a scuffle broke out and law enforcement came in to break up the fight. a conservative student canceled free speech week. 6:35. new details now. recreational marijuana sales get the green light starting january 1st. one place it will not happen right away, san francisco. the reason is because yesterday supervisors agreed to put things on hold until regulations can be approved. one sticking point is to ensure racial equality. currently open dispensaries have to apply for permits while the rules are finalized. > bay area cities have been hoding meetings for it. today, more gan hill is taking

up that issue. the city council will hold study sessions tonight at 5:30 at city hall. everyone who lives here knows how hard it is to rent, let alone buy a home here. earlier this year, mayor ed lee committed $44 million and a plot of land in the outer sunset to build homes for 60-90 teachers. the meeting is set for 12:30 at the urban center. we reached out to san jose unifi unified school district. the district tells us they do not have the land to build employee housing. the only solution is to pay teachers more. they say that is a challenge, given budget restrainted. 6:36, happening today. bart begins work on modernizing the station in the east bay over

the next several months. they will improve lighting, build new stairwells, elevators and restrooms. they will kick off the project with a sell brax. we reached out to bart about the other stations. they tell us construction at the concord station is well under way. they are about half way done with that. some work has begun at the downtown berkeley station. construction there is expected to last multiple years. work on the powell station in san francisco will begin soon, next month, and construction on the 19th street oakland station will begin next year. 6:37. the transit center could be more expensive to build. the san francisco examiner reports transit officials may use boring machines to create multibillion dollar tunnels instead of excavating the street. the benefit is, it wouldn't hurt merchants along that route. the transit center will house 11

taj of people that drink it. you know what, the temperatures today are going to be cooler to start. you can start with a nice cup of coffee. i always do. people drink hot coffee whether it's hot or cold. san francisco, 65 degrees. the forecast will climb into the upper 80s through the coast and the peninsula. i know, it's way too hot. especially if you live along the water. people live along the water to get a cool sea breeze. we are not seeing much of that. 87 degrees. palo alto, 91. antioch 94 and concord about 95 degrees. now, we are still expecting dry conditions and a light breeze from the northeast. the winds have died down, which is great. it could get gusty again tonight. the red flag warning could remain in effect for the highlighted areas. kind of stay alert. let's talk about the potential for hotter spots today.

these are predicted highs for today. keep in mind, we haven't hit the temperatures yet, but we have the possibility of 93, napa, 95, concord and oakland in the 90s. as the high pressure moves out, guess what? as we head into friday, we get a nice cooling jet stream and that's going to drop our temperatures down to a much more comfortable 60s and 70s for san francisco and 80s inland. i think i'll take it. as long as it's sunny out there, i don't think people mind the heat too much. as long as we are not talking triple digits. we are looking at 92. not the temperature, but the roadway. west 92 does show a pleasant drive. it's not as good of a break as we showed on the travel times. still about 22-23 minutes from the toll plaza to the peninsula on 101. be aware. there is a crowd there. it's not as bad as you might see sometimes at this time. dumbarton bridge picking up volume as well.

and crews in southern california try to tackle a large wildfire there on the left in corona. here is a live look right now in oakland. that's where firefighters are monitoring for hot spots. we are getting a look this morning at some of the pink retardant, which is what you see on the hill that was left behind. a fire forced 100 homes to be evacuated. those orders have been lifted, luckily no homes were damaged. the fire did, however, burn 20 acres in that same area ravaged by the fire storm that so many of us remember in 1991. meantime, in southern california, firefighters are making headway and tackling the wildfire that now burned 2000 acres. that canyon fire has been burning in anaheim since monday. firefighters are letting evacuees return back to their homes. nearly 2,000 homes are threatened. this morning, the fire is 15% contained. also new this morning, the

palo unified school superintendent is expected to resign on friday. the mercury news reports this morning, this is amid questions about the school's district budget design and his way of handling sexual assault cases. the superintendent came under scrutiny when they missed a deadline to notify the employees about pay raises. now the district is expected to pay more than 4 milli$4 million those raises. parents voiced concerns about mcgee saying he should have notified them immediately after a student reports a sexual assault at palo alto high school. we are live at travis air force base where a crew will take off with hurricane maria recovery efforts in puerto rico. new video into the news room, a plane that just landed minutes ago. the crew will take this plane to north carolina to pick up a large generator, then head to san juan airport where the
