you made it to thursday morning. let's take a live look outside, golden gate bridge. guess what is back. can you tell? the fog. the chp issuing a fog advisory for this morning. your news starting out at 7:30. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm marcus washington. this morning is definitely going to be -- it's cool out there right now, is it going to start to warm up today? >> not as bad as yesterday. yesterday we were hot in most parts, today it's going to transition, we have already started seeing a cool down. yes, the return of clouds for coastal waters, south bay 63 degrees, tri-valley 59, san francisco 62, north bay 50.

so we're mainly seeing that fog and those clouds along the coast, but, yes, it is going to be another warm day, our biggest cool down comes into play tomorrow. let's check in with mike. >> the fog getting a lot of screen time. chp warns about lower visibility here. we have lower attendance right now on this golden gate bridge shot. so we will look at the speed sensors, no problems. coming down through the north bay and a nice easy flow of traffic across the richmond san rafael bridge. while we reopened the freeway after the police activity in emeryville, that was almost 5:30 p.m. speed sensors showing little blips here and there as construction crews are in spots but no full closures for freeways. many consider him a cultural icon who brought sexuality out into the open. >> celebrities across the spectrum this morning are reacting to the death of playboy founder hugh hefner.

he died at his playboy mansion last night from natural causes. the empire built in large part by the magazine that he single handedly started in the early 1950s and as much as he altered the face of the american culture, he will be remembered for far more than that. he also created an entire brand and business that expanded into all corners. >> it's not hard to find reaction this morning. the reverend jesse jackson tweeted this out, he says, hugh hefner was a strong supporter of the civil rights movement. we shall never forget him. may he rest in peace. kim kardashian who was on the cover of the playboy magazine says rip to the reg der hugh hefner. i'm so honored to have been part of the playboy team. you will be greatly missed. love you, hef. and here is a tweet from tv and radio icon larry king. hugh hefner was a giant in publishing, journalism, free speech and civil rights. he was a true original and he

was my friend. rest well, hef. hugh hefner was 91 years old. a developing story, terrifying moments as one of the nations most traveled parks, one person is dead and another is injured after a rock fell on el capitan in yosemite national park. this is the height of the climbing season in yosemite national park. many people witnessed it as it unfolded yesterday. >> sergio quintana is at yosemite national park with the horrifying accounts from people who saw it all happen. >> reporter: that rock slide came off the granite face of el capitan, crews began searching for hours but they did stop when the sun went down. witnesses describe a rumbling then a massive cloud of dust and rocks. >> it sounded like really, really loud thunder or very loud -- like louder than thunder, like loud explosions. >> reporter: rescue crews launched a small fleet of

helicopters to survey the area and transport the injured to the nearest hospital. details on the patient and extent of the injuries have not been released, the identity of the person killed has not been released. the slide came from a waterfall route, a popular trail near horse tail falls, this is the busiest part of the season for rock climbers. according to the national park service there were about 30 climbers on the granite face of el capitan during the rock slide. >> we just saw this massive dust cloud and we knew it was probably near climbers. >> reporter: the search continued for hours after the slide, it's still not clear if there were any further injuries. it's not yet clear exactly what caused that rock slide. we hope to be getting more information on that later on this morning. at yosemite national park, i'm sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. >> we will stay on top of this sorry throughout the day. sergio quintana is at yosemite national park tracking all of the developments. you can follow this story on air and online. terrifying moments on the

peninsula, a warning to parents in san mateo. be careful where your child walks to school. this after a student was almost abducted. happened yesterday morning on peninsula avenue near the railroad tracks. a 14-year-old was on her way to school when a man got out of a van and grabbed her. she was able to fight him off and escape. the incident, however, is rattling nerves. >> i'm a -- i'm frightened right now. sometimes i walk at night like here is the train. >> police are investigating a similar incident that happened in that area last week. the suspect is described as a middle eastern man in his 60s. bob redell is working this story he will join us with a live report in an hour. lawyers for sierra lamar's convicted killer goes back to court. they will argue for a retrial. attorneys for antolin garcia torres have moved to disqualify the judge in the case. they say he failed to disclose a

potential conflict of interest. the attorneys say that the journal once represented the lead investigator in the case in prior civil lawsuit. the investigator was accused of playing a role in an inmate's death. this morning a south bay woman who received nearly $7 million settlement in an excessive force claim against santa clara police plan to talk about that this afternoon. >> you are not allowed to come in this house. get off me. >> the city of santa clara yesterday agreed to settle in the wake of a controversial incident in april of last year all caught on tape by a police body camera. officers arrived at the home of danielle harmon to arrest her 15-year-old daughter who they say was an arson suspect. mar mon refused to open the door because police had no warrant. harmon broke her ankle in that scuffle that you see that followed. santa clara's police chief stands by his officers though not everyone agrees. >> i firmly believe that the judge would say that the

officers acted in good faith and they are not in violation of law and that is the reason why i completely support their actions. >> santa clara police department trampled all over this mother's constitutional right and then they trampled all over her body. there was no need for them to make this type of entry. >> the $6.7 million settlement covers excessive force and long-term disability. it does not admit to criminal guilt. coming up, millions of americans are affected by the equifax hack, the fix the company is pushing as a new ceo apologizes. fixing south bay homes, the person who is getting an entire rebuild today. who are these people?

good morning, i'm landon dowdy live at cnbc world headquarters. wall street could take a breather today after stocks posted modest gains yesterday, the dow snapping a four day losing streak after republicans in the white house unveiled their tax reform plan. the prospects of tax reform has been the main driver of what's shown these market gains so far this year. rising 56 poins to 22,340, the nasdaq closing up 73. the officer rum ceo of equifax is publicly apologizing for the massive data breach as well as the company's response. in a statement published in the "wall street journal" he says that there was inadequate support for consumers seeking information after the breach was announced. he says more call center

representatives will be added and the company will strengthen its response website. equifax also promises to launch a service by january 31st to allow consumer toss lock and unlock their credit reports and that would be for free. microsoft ceo says the company's search engine bing will now focus more on the pc market. apple says it would replace bing as the default search engine for siri and spotlight on mack with google. it has been the default since 2013. it does still power yahoo, aol and back to you. coming up, we have tracking cooler temperatures for the rest of the week. >> we are talking about 50s and 60s again but the change will come this afternoon. still dealing with the warm up but we do have a nice cool down on the way. >> we have more traffic on the way but not here yet. the san mateo bridge moves very well and a clear view here unlike the golden gate bridge.

>> rebuilding silicon valley will help a 95-year-old navy veteran, the group will renovate his home. crews will do work on 90 homes at a san jose mobile home park. the non-profit has been around for more than 25 years. it's always so nice to see. >> a group that's been around for 25 years without the notoriety, they're doing it because it's the right thing to do into is it too late for me to become a veteran? i have some work. >> we can find something. >> help laura out, too. >> today with that weather, definitely yesterday a warm one, still going to be warm today but not as warm. >> right. and another thing you're going to notice is the return of some clouds. but more along the coastline. you have already seen that foggy bridge and right now it is in the 60s so the morning temperatures haven't really changed. been waking up to 50s and 60s, 63 degrees in san jose, 61 in san francisco, but today's microclimate forecast, well, we are still in those 80s. as marcus mentioned, yes, it's

still another warm day but we are talking about a nice cooling trend that's on the way just in time for the weekend. san jose will climb to 87 degrees, east san jose a little warmer at about 90 and even though we are still seeing some 90s at least we are keeping it on the lower end of the 90s. concord 92, walnut creek 89, danville 91, over near oakland we are talking about 80 degrees, oakland has been topping out in upper 80s all week long, the peninsula startingo see more normal temperatures around here, half-moon bay 70 and you are going to notice a little bit more of a buildup of fog and then tomorrow the biggest impact will be the return of that morning drizzle for san francisco. now, parts of san francisco inland parts like mission and all of that not seeing a lot of cloud cover but the coastline is expected to see that cloud cover at least through the weekend. we were tracking a chance of seeing some showers but it looks like that's all going to stay up north. novato 87, we had this ridge of high pressure and it's still

sitting slightly over us, that's what's been keeping us nice as hot. as earlyzqj as tomorrow we wille a jet stream move in and that's going to drop our temperatures by about possibly 15, maybe even 10 degrees along the coastline. the inland spots are usually nice and warm. tomorrow they are going to be in the 80s and 70s for some areas, including san jose which will be great. the hour by hour outlook doesn't show too many changes, but i do want you to kind of pay attention because this weekend you will see the return of that fog and as early as next week we will start trending cooler. next seven days as early as tomorrow we will be in the 60s for san francisco and then we will kind of stay in those 70s through saturday and sunday and then as we head into monday 71 degrees and we will start noticing a much more seasonable pattern for san francisco and inland as well. even 78 degrees as we head into next tuesday. mike. >> things look great as far as that forecast. right now they are looking great as far as these speed sensors go as well. so far no surprises. we do have this crash, though, reported southbound 880 as

you're approaching dakota, that would be the transition on to the dumbarton bridge, with he see slowing around the toll plaza, slow moving larger vehicles sometimes skew that data. the crash looks like everything is off to the shoulder. somebody saying was somebody driving recklessly through the area. it may be an issue for 880, so far chap hasn't begin any other advisories. easy drive through the tri-valley. a clear easy drive. back to you. 4:48. southwest airlines is apologizing after a passenger was dragged off of a los angeles bound flight. the whole thing caught on camera. >> i will walk off. don't touch me. >> let's walk. >> don't -- don't touch me. >> this happened tuesday night in baltimore. the passenger claimed that she had a deadly allergy to animals and asked that a service dog be removed from the flight. it turns out airline policy requires anyone with such

serious conditions fly with a medical certificate. the woman did not have one and refused to get off. that's what led up to this situation where she was forcefully removed by officers and then arrested. the only way we will ever know what happened to otto warmbier while in captivity in north korea is in north korean officials tell us. warmbier died from complications of a long-term brain injury caused by lack of oxygen. his parents are breaking their silence saying his son was tortured. >> they kidnapped otto, they tortured him, they intentionally injured him. it looked like someone had taken a pair of pliers and rearranged his bottom teeth. >> the ohio coroner who examined the body says there is no evidence of warmbier's teeth being tortured. warmbier's parents did not request an autopsy and the coroner says without that there is no knowing exactly what happened. >> a bit of a turn around, california's chief elections officer now says russian hackers

did not target california voting systems last year. of homeland security last week indicated hackers targeted election systems in 21 states including california. but secretary of state alex padilla now says he has learned from homeland security that russian infiltrators instead targeted the state's department of workforce development. getting back into the race, governor brown signed legislation to move the 2020 primary from june to march on super tuesday. this will force candidates to compete in california's early nominating process. political analysts say it could force candidates to focus on issues such as climate change and civil rights. coming up, gay rights activists want to stay in curriculums for california students, why they say textbooks out there right now aren't enough. but first happening now, two malaysian teenagers are being charged with murder for allegedly setting fire at an islamic boarding school. 23 people were killed, mostly

4:53 on your thursday morning. gay rights groups are speaking out about some of the textbooks they believe should not be a part of calirnia's new history and socia sciences curriculum. the department of education is currently formulating updated textbook recommendations for kindergarten through eighth grade. new requirements call for lgbt issues to be covered. gay rights supporters yesterday addressed the state commission

saying some of the books under consideration are not sufficient and should be rejected. the state's recommendations will be ratified in november. new this morning the fremont unified school district may build a new school. the school board heard from people in the community last night. the district says the new junior high school will go up on the horse property behind mcdonds on fremont boulevard. several schools will convert to middle schools meaning sixth, seventh and eighth grade students will attend. the district has a timeline to make those changes through the 2022/23 school year. the population is booming across silicon valley and it's straining some school districts but maybe not for long. we looked into the projections overnight and the report from may 2015 says the number of school aged kids will actually go down in the coming years. the total number of kids under the age of ten will decline by 5 to 8%. silicon valley's k through 12 enrollment rate will decline by about 3% between 2015 and 2023. here is why, researchers say the

number of women who are of childbearing age has not grown and will keep pace with -- or will not keep pace with other populations as they continue to grow. we all remember the collapsed spillway at the orville dam but now a six month long investigation has uncovered even more safety issues. this time with the dam itself. >> senior investigator steven sock has more. >> we reviewed 20 years worth of documents and safety records and found consistent issues that raise serious safety concerns surrounding orville dam itself, everything from a 15 foot long crack in gate 8 of the flood control structure to cracking trunnion rods that maneuver those flood control gates themselves to other issues that state officials insist are not an immediate cause for concern, but raise serious questions for some safety engineers we spoke to. >> when i show you that, what does that say to you as an engineer? >> it tells me we've got a
